http://aacpsschools.org/nutrition/apply-for-free-or-reduced-price-meals/

*Families must re-apply each school year.

Arrival ProcedureIn an effort to welcome & receive over 600 students during morning arrival in the most efficient manner, several entrances around the building will be open from 8:00 am to 8:15 am. Students may utilize any of the entrances as follows:

Drivers must pull forward as far as possible in the hug and hop lane and drop off students on the passenger side of vehicles.

Drivers are welcome to pull into an available parking space if they wish to escort students to any entrance. Please avoid parking in the hug and hop lane.

Car riding students may enter the building at their nearest drop off location. Bus riding students will enter the building at the bus loop entrance. Town Center Blvd walkers may enter the building through the playground side door at the end of the

primary grade hallway. Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students may enter through the playground side door at the end

of the early childhood hallway. Blue Water Blvd walkers may enter through the main entrance. Students traveling from the rear of the building may enter through the back door.

Dismissal Procedures

Dismissal begins at 2:40 using the following procedures:

1. All car riders are dismissed through the side door at the end of the music hallway.  Please assist us by pulling up as far as you can in the Hug and Hop lane and remaining in your vehicle.  When your child sees you, he/she will be escorted to your car at which time you may leave the Hug and Hop lane.  Parents who wish to meet their child at the parent waiting area near the music hallway side door or across the parking lot on the grass median between the crosswalks, must park in a parking space in the lot, instead of in the Hug and Hop lane. All cars must exit the lot through the Town Center Blvd. driveway exit.

2. All bus riders are dismissed to the back door where they are escorted to the bus loop.  This includes all aftercare van riders.

3. Once we are assured that most vehicular traffic has cleared, we will begin walker dismissal.

4. Town Center Walkers (all students who walk on Town Center Blvd. toward Charter Oaks Blvd. to get home) are dismissed through the side door at the end of the 1st/2nd grade hallway and proceed through the kindergarten playground to the parent waiting area.

5. Back Door Walkers (all students who live behind the school and do not need to cross Blue Water Blvd. at the intersection of Town Center Blvd.) are dismissed through the back door and proceed to the parent waiting area located at the corner of the building.

6. Blue Water Walkers (all students who must use the crossing guard intersection of Town Center Blvd. and Blue Water Blvd.) are dismissed through the front doors of the school. The parent waiting area will be located across the parking lot on the grass median between the crosswalks.

7. Open Door students are dismissed to the extended day care room.

It is imperative that a clear walking path is maintained in order for students to exit the building and safely cross the street. We ask that parents who wish to meet their children to please remain in one of the parent waiting areas located on the kindergarten playground, near the side music hallway door, near the back door, or across the parking lot on the grass median between the crosswalks. Please avoid standing at the main entrance and blocking students' paths home. Also, please avoid parking in the hug & hop lane. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Pre-K

Welcome to our school and to Pre-Kindergarten! I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year! We have a great year filled with fun and learning! I can't wait to see the amazing ways your child will grow! Here's to an amazing year!

Kindergarten Corner

This month in Kindergarten we will be focusing on our first Theme Unit: “The Power of Me”.  In this theme your child will be exploring how they are unique, important, and special.  A few Science and Social Studies concepts we will discuss are: what makes a family, how to be a good friend, healthy foods and exercising, and how to be a good citizen in school and at home.  For Language and Literacy skills we will work on letter

identification, high frequency words, rhyming, blending, and segmenting sounds in words.  In Math we will practice counting to 31, counting 10 objects using number names, writing to 10, naming, describing, and building basic 2D and 3D shapes, and describing objects using positional words.  We are very excited to make

so many new friends this month!

First Grade

Welcome to First Grade and the 2019-2020 school year! As this new year begins, we will be learning the routines and rules of first grade as well as learning about each other and making new friends.

Our first quarter unit of study is "I Am Curious About...". In this unit, we will examine how we change, living things change, and how the natural world changes. We will compare how we have grown and become amazing first graders. By week four, we will receive our special guests- Monarch caterpillars. We will spend several weeks observing the transformation process as these little creatures turn into butterflies right before our eyes! In math, we will be reviewing number concepts and working on adding and subtracting with 20. Literacy is a critical component of our day. Students will engage in a wide variety of literacy activities including shared and interactive read-alouds, literacy centers, foundation literacy skills (phonics) and guided reading lessons. Our goal is to have all students reading on or above grade level by the end of the year. To attain this goal, reading will be the primary focus for our weekly homework. Students will be assigned to read 15-20 minutes each night at home. In place of the weekly agenda books, first grade has opted to purchase the weekly Scholastic News magazines for each student. This reading material will be coming home weekly as well.

Please note that we go outside for recess every day the weather permits. Your child might benefit from having a labeled blue or white sweater or sweatshirt at school. While it is still warm outside, our classroom might be chilly with the air conditioner on. We also encourage you to send in a change of clothing (socks, uniform and underwear) for your child to keep in their locker. Accidents happen and there are times when students might need to change clothes. This year, our lunchtime is at 12:30 pm. Students are encouraged to bring a spill proof bottle (water only please) and nut-free snack to eat during our guided reading rotations. This is a "working snack" so please make sure your child can open the container independently and avoid any snack foods with liquids. If you would like to donate a snack to share; goldfish, cereal, animal crackers and pretzels are always welcome for days when a student forgets one from home. We look forward to our partnership with you this school year and the exciting learning to come!

Second Grade

Second graders have been doing an awesome job transitioning into their new classroom! We have been learning all about classroom rules and routines. In writing, we have learned what it means to be a master writer and have been practicing using details in our writing. In math, we have been using mental math to add and subtract within 10 and 20 as well as adding and subtracting doubles. We have been learning about the literacy centers around our classroom such as: book nook, shared reading, exploration, writing and word study. Ask your child to tell you all about the different centers they have visited so far!

In September second graders will continue learning about how to be creators, leaders, and explorers in our theme of “Learning Together.” In writing we will be working on writing personal narratives. In math, we will be exploring place value as well as adding two digit and one digit addends together. In reading we will be using text features to find key information in a text and ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. We look forward to a great year in second grade!

Third Grade

Our third grade team is excited to welcome our new third graders to a new school year filled with learning and fun! Once distributed, please be sure to review your child’s syllabus explicitly to receive necessary information that pertains to this school year.

In reading, we will be focusing on building and strengthening overall reading comprehension through targeted guided reading and explicit comprehension lessons. In math, we will begin the year learning the foundations of multiplication. In science, we will be exploring forces and interactions. In social studies, we will be studying communities and their geographic characteristics.

Again, we are looking forward to an exciting start of the year and look forward to building a relationship with you and your child throughout this school year!

Fourth Grade

4th grade is looking forward to an amazing start to the 2019-2020 school year. This month we will be starting with foundation skills and moving into concepts like World Explorers, Plant and Animal Survival Structures, Factoring and Place Value, and Various Reading and Writing Skills. We are looking forward to Back to School Night this month! We hope to see you there.

Fifth GradeFifth graders will be off to a stellar start this year! Through the implementation of Community Building Circles, students will meet daily to connect and communicate with one another to build strong, positive relationships. This month in math, Unit 1 invites us to explore volume by determining how many cubic units will fit inside a 3-dimensional figure. In literacy, we begin our unit focused on communication through explicit comprehension lessons, guided reading, and interactive read alouds. Our focus in writing will be narratives, where students will be writing from various points of view. In social studies, we are discovering our relative and absolute location on Earth. We will also embark on our study of colonization and how the three colonial geographic regions developed and interacted with each other. In science, we will be exploring the properties of matter. We look forward to a year filled with discovery and learning!

Triple E Arts & Humanities

Super excited to began a great school year. Triple-E allows students to work in teams to collaboratively ask questions, creatively solve problems, and enthusiastically learn through hands-on exploration. Through an interdisciplinary approach and curriculum that emphasizes connections and collaboration, the Arts & Humanities theme nurtures the qualities of intelligence and imagination necessary for success in the 21st Century. Rigor and relevance are enhanced for all children through the arts and humanities lines of thought, avenues of exploration, and vehicles for showcasing student understanding. This theme explores how people process and record the human need to respond to life through the arts and literature. There are four different types of art forms:

Dance is kinesthetic–movement of the physical being.

Music is aural–singing, listening and/or playing an instrument.

Theatre is interdisciplinary–written text, dramatic interpretation and multimedia production. Visual Arts is spatial – images, structures and tactile works.

Media

I am excited to welcome everyone back to school, especially to the library.  I hope that lots of reading happened over the summer.  If you read a great book this summer, I would love for you to share it with me.  I look forward to a wonderful school year filled with lots of learning and sharing of many great books!

During the first month of school, we will practice rules and procedures to follow when in the library.  The primary students will learn about book care rules and how to locate books.  The intermediate students will review the organization of the library.

Happy Reading,

Ms. JacksonMs. Walsh

Instrumental Music Welcome to the new school year! My name is Mr. Curran, and I’m happy to be the Instrumental Music teacher this year at Seven Oaks! I met with all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students last week to give a brief overview of the Band and Orchestra programs. Registration forms were distributed to all interested students this week. These forms are due back to Mr. Curran by Tuesday September 17th.

Each student will need to rent or purchase their own instrument, which must be in good playing condition. A list of rental stores is included on the back of the registration form. An extremely limited number of school instruments are available on a first come, first serve basis for students with financial need. If students need to borrow an instrument from the school, please indicate this need on the registration form, and understand that participation and instrument choice will be based upon availability of instruments.

I ask that all students have their instrument and lesson book (Essential Elements, book 1 for their specific instrument) when lesson begin in October. I look forward to working with your students this

Artwelcome all former and new students. Excited for the year and future projects. Let’s start the year off right.

Music News

Welcome back, Pride! The music department is excited to start a new year. We have two new faces on staff, Mrs. Walker in general music/chorus, and Mr. Curran in band and orchestra. They and Ms. O'Neal are all looking forward to making music with you.

We will begin the year with a unit on communication. Students will explore and learn to exercise higher-level thinking skills using music as a vehicle for success. We encourage you to ask your student questions about the music they listen to. For example: "What instruments do you here in this song?" Or "What is the vocal range of your favorite singer?"

This month, you can expect to receive recruitment letters and permission slips for band, orchestra, and chorus. Orchestra is open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Band and chorus are open to 4th and 5th graders. Be aware that students may participate in both band and chorus OR orchestra and chorus, but not in band and orchestra at the same time.

Federal Impact Aid Survey Forms

On Tuesday, October 1, 2019, your child will bring home a Federal Impact Aid Survey form. Please assist us by filling out the information requested on the form and:

Return it to Seven Oaks Elementary School

The U.S. Department of Education allows a multiple child form. AACPS has designed a form that will allow two children’s names for your convenience. Should you have more than two children, please utilize a second form that you can either obtain from the school or download from the AACPS website at www.aacps.org. Also, please note that the complete address of the Parent/Guardian’s Employer if they work on Federal Property, the complete address of the Federal Property on which they work, and each survey form must be signed and dated by the Parent/Guardian. The Federal Impact Aid Survey form for 2019-2020 will be available to download on October 1, 2019. We will also be using our Connect-Ed Automated Telephone Notification System to remind everyone about the significance of completing and returning this survey. The school system receives approximately $2 million in funding from the Federal government in support of our children after the forms are processed.

Thank you in advance for your support and assistance. Should you have any questions regarding this information, please call Angie Smack in the Finance Office at 410-222-5200.

Notice to Parents and VisitorsAll parents/visitors must report to the main office before proceeding into the school. The

safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us.  Our school will be utilizing a system for checking in all visitors.  The system is called: V Soft by RaptorWare.  When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID to a staff person in the school office.  This card will be scanned and the following information will be collected:  your photo, your name, and your date of birth.  This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country.  If your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the use of your ID, then access to the school will be denied.  On future visits to a school, in which you have previously registered, you will only be asked to show your ID as your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors.  You will also be asked to sign out with the office upon leaving the school so that we know you have departed the building.  The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server.

We ask that you say your morning goodbyes at the front door and allow your child to proceed to his/her class independently. We also ask that you help your child be responsible for bringing all materials needed every day, including lunches, instruments and homework. Your cooperation in this security effort is greatly appreciated.Should you have any questions, please contact the Supervisor of School Security, 410-222-5083.

1 Attendance Regular school attendance is an important factor in student success. As a parent, you can

encourage proper attendance by ensuring that your child gets adequate rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and has adequate time to catch the school bus or walk to school.

There are lawful reasons for absence from school. Whenever your child is absent, you must provide a note of explanation to the school within three days of your child’s return to school. Absences of five consecutive days or more require a physician’s note.

School hours are from 8:15 a.m. until 2:40 p.m. Students who walk or are driven to school should plan to arrive between 7:55a.m.-8:10 a.m. Students should not be dropped off before 7:55 a.m., as there is no supervision until this time. All students are expected to be in their classrooms by 8:15 a.m. so as not to be marked tardy. We highly recommend that all communities form walking groups so students can walk together and adults can take turns supervising the walk to and from school.

Important Message from the Health Room

This is a reminder to all parents of the medication policy in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Student possession of any medication, prescription, or over the counter medications in school is prohibited unless a “Parent Request to Administer Medication at School” is on file in the health room. Over the counter medications include but are not limited to: cough drops, antacids, medicated lip balm, medicated lotions/creams/ointments, etc. This form needs to be completed by the physician and parent or guardian. The medication ordered by the physician, needs to be brought by the parent/guardian in a labeled prescription bottle, or be in an unopened bottle/box if an over the counter medication, like Tylenol or Advil, has been prescribed.

The medication is kept in the health room in a locked cabinet and is dispensed as needed per physician orders to the student in the health room.

Parents, it is a great idea to have medication on file for your child when they come to the health room for minor illnesses such as a headache, stomachaches, and cramps. They can come to the health room, receive the medication, rest for a few minutes and return to class. This way they are not missing important class work.

If your child uses an inhaler for their asthma and needs to have one in school, they must follow the same procedure as having medication in school. No student is to be in possession of any form of medication in school unless the proper forms are completed and on file in the health room.

Attached is the Medication Administration form that needs to be completed by a physician and parent or guardian in order for your child to receive medication at school. Please provide this form to your health care provider if you would like your child to receive medication during this school year.

“Parent’s Request to Administer Medication at School” on next page.

It is not monitored constantly, but is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you may call the office of School Security, at (410) 222-5083.
