Contributors

Justine Bannister, Founder – Just B

Justine is an independent children’s media consultant with 20 years experience in the children’s entertainment industry. Her very broad skill set spans distribution, acquisitions, co-productions, production, post-production, marketing, brand and community management gained notably at 20th Century Fox, The Lagardère Group, Disney Channels France, TV Loonland, Dupuis, Dargaud and PGS Entertainment. She has a strong track record in spotting hot properties, acquiring them, and turning them into

global brands. The three-times BAFTA-nominated ‘Little Princess’ (TV Loonland) sold in 180 territories, the hugely successful Inazuma (Disney Channels France) and the Emmy-Award nominated ‘The Jungle Bunch’ (PGS Entertainment) now being developed into a long form series and an animated Feature.

In her role as International Head of Distribution, Justine tripled sales revenues at Lagardère, Dupuis and Dargaud and quadrupled them at TV Loonland, inking several major pan-European and pan-global deals for key properties.

Current missions include Sales, Press, Marketing and International Distribution for Toonmax Media China (Kids & Family Division of Shanghai Media Group), Development, Marketing & Brand Management on the property SMOG for Panache Animation France, Marketing & Gap Financing for key properties with Tomavistas, Spain. Justine has a BA Honors Degree in European Studies and Spanish and a trilingual Business Masters Degree from Barcelona University.

Henry Becket, Chief Enthusiast – Ideas at Work

Ideas at Work is the brainchild of Henry Becket, who after a 30+ year apprenticeship in advertising as copywriter, creative director, chief exec and latterly commercials director, escaped to the comparatively grown-up world of children’s TV programmes. At one point Europe’s busiest producer of children’s ads (and with 4 children and 2.9 grandchildren), he was conceited enough to think he knew a lot about “what kids want”…so came up with five TV ideas. The first – a 3D HD animated series for pre-

schoolers, ‘Olly the Little White Van’ – now runs to 65 episodes and is gradually rolling out round the world. It is aired on Channel 5, Cartoonito and Boomerang and in cinemas in the UK. The next – a 2D animated family comedy for older children, ‘Sunnygreen Farm’ – has been a year or so in development, and with the bible complete is getting increasingly serious interest from investors, broadcasters and potential production partners.

Ideas at Work is unique in many ways, not least in having no fulltime staff, but working with a loose-knit team of blue-chip industry creatives, consultants and advisors, all of whom, happily, know a lot. The plan now is to bring at least one more stunning concept to the world, before senility finally sets in – or second childhood, which clearly would be much more useful.

Kay Benbow, Controller – CBeebies

Kay Benbow was appointed Controller of CBeebies in May 2010, having worked in children's television for over 20 years – primarily at the BBC. Since 2006, she has been

Head of CBeebies Production, Animation and Acquisitions, where she was responsible for leading all in-house production – including executive producing hit shows ‘ZingZillas’ and ‘Something Special’ – and commissioning acquired programming, bringing in top-rated shows ‘Timmy Time’, ‘Chuggington’, ‘Wibbly Pig’ and ‘Driver Dan's Story Train’ to the channel. Kay began working in BBC Children's in 1988 after beginning her career with BBC World and Domestic Services. After a period in TV presentation, where she managed the live weekday links with Andi Peters and Edd the Duck, she became a producer/director working on shows such as ‘Get Your Own Back’ and ‘Bodger And Badger’. Kay then spent two years at Tell Tale Productions as a producer on the internationally successful ‘Tweenies’, before returning to BBC Children's.

She was instrumental in building the pre-school department as the CBeebies channel was launched – devising and developing acclaimed show ‘Tikkabilla’ and bringing in key on-screen talent, Justin Fletcher. She has been executive producer on a wide range of in-house and independent shows, including ‘In The Night Garden’, ‘Kerwhizz’ and ‘Numberjacks’, as well as being responsible for building an integrated, multi-platform CBeebies community, which spans TV, online and radio. Kay studied Theology at St Hugh's College, Oxford and is married with two sons.

Liz Brion, Head of Media Tax – Grant Thornton

Her experience includes planning for tax efficient structures with particular reference to taxation of intellectual property, planning for sale and purchase transactions, restructuring and refinancing, and maximising R&D and creative industry tax credits.

Helen Brunsdon, Animation Producer and Consultant

With twenty years experience, Helen has worked extensively in the animation industry, firstly joining the BBC as a production co-ordinator and then as an assistant for the Cardiff International Animation Festival. She then worked as a production manager on ‘Wife of Bath’ directed by Joanna Quinn and produced by Les Mills, which received an Academy Award nomination and a host of other

awards at major International Animation Festivals. In 1999 Helen, returned to Aardman Animations where she played an important part in developing new projects for Aardman’s Broadcast production slate and heading up the short film content, executive producing the BAFTA winning ‘The Pearce Sisters’.
