Leading on Your Feet: The Art and Science of Leadership

In today’s Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous (VUCA) world, strategies change frequently, businesses rise and fall overnight, and the only constant is change. Today’s project leaders have to be adept at thinking on their feet, leveraging their team’s strengths, and confidently leading through change.

Through this engaging and interactive program, Andrew will present his insights into the principles of what it means to lead as a project manager in this VUCA world. Combining the latest in today’s thought leadership with advanced techniques from improvisation, participants will not only learn what it means to lead on their feet, they’ll also develop the skills to do it.

Session 1A – Ballroom

Leading Change with Less Resistance – with or without authority

Today’s workplace is in a constantly evolving environment of change. You will encounter change in several areas of your career at the same time. In some situations, you may be in the formal role of leading the change, but in many situations, you are only one part of a wider change occurring in the organization.

Your opportunity is to be seen as leaders in driving organizational change, even though you may not be the sponsor or leader in the change process. Gaining a reputation as a change advocate positively impacts the way you are viewed within the organization. It also has a significant constructive effect on the satisfaction and motivation you feel in your careers.

In this presentation, you chart the extent of our current interaction with organizational change. You incorporate principles for leading change without authority, and work on ways to stay flexible during change. You develop a personal plan for advocating for and leading change in the organization, even though you may not be in a position of authority.

Tina GraziottoDale Carnegie

Design Thinking and Project ManagementDesign Thinking has emerged as a major trend for how innovative organizations and teams are approaching problem-solving. Is Design Thinking another business fad? Or is it a useful tool that Project Managers can employ in a more flexible, discovery-driven world? This presentation explores the intersection between Design Thinking and projects and will provide a high-level overview of Design Thinking methods and tools. Case studies are used to show concretely how to integrate design methods into projects with lessons learned and unique outcomes. At the conclusion of the presentation, participants should be able to describe the benefits of incorporating design methodologies on projects for increased customer alignment and business impact, and will be able to illustrate multiple design-thinking tools that could benefit current or future projects.

Adaptive Leadership LEADs to Project SuccessProject leadership in traditional environments is a challenge, and in adaptive environments can feel impossible. Adaptive leadership is the key to unlocking success with the project team. Adaptive leadership offers a practical path to solving project issues while challenging the traditional systems that have dominated many organizations for decades.

Leaders who practice an adaptive style can learn to separate important aspects of a project from what can be discarded. By focusing on the value added to the business rather than traditional hierarchy, they learn to identify and capitalize on smart risks while avoiding wasteful distractions. This presentation intends to help you discover strategies to LEAD the project team to success..

Afternoon Keynote Speaker – Ballroom

Project Everest: Hybrid Agile for Adapting to ChangeClimbing Mount Everest is considered one of mankind’s greatest feats of human endurance. The exciting expedition to the top of the world’s highest peak is a journey filled with unparalleled physical and mental challenges and some of the roughest, most extreme conditions imaginable. In 2008, Alan Mallory took on the challenge and set a world record when he, along with three other members of his immediate family, reached the summit.

Alan’s presentation is built around the 2 years of planning and 2 months of climbing that went into accomplishing this incredible feat. It focuses on agile thinking, tools and strategies as well as comparing and contrasting these elements to a more traditional waterfall approach. It reinforces the importance of numerous project areas such as strategic planning, effective communication, risk management, teamwork and development of trust within professional relationships as well as the mentality and passion involved in conquering one’s own Everest, whatever that may be.

Emotional Intelligence for Managing Diverse and Complex Teams

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify, manage and purposefully express our own emotions as well understand and respond appropriately to the emotions of others. This is a crucial capacity for project managers to develop as it plays such a critical role in our motivation, problem solving, work place interactions and in building strong interpersonal relationships.

Alan’s emotional intelligence programs help develop leaders and strengthen teams by exploring the skills and mindsets that are essential for emotional growth. His presentation will include practical tools and examples that can be implemented to achieve results.

The Strategic Importance of Project GovernanceCompanies are constantly looking for ways to differentiate themselves from competitors by developing new products and services. As a result, the IT organization is challenged with how to manage an ever-increasing portfolio of projects without an increase in IT budgets. How can we reduce project risk? How can we manage projects proactively and not reactively? What changes need to be made to our Project Governance methodology to ensure project success?

This session will explore a case study of the State of Georgia and how a Project Management Organization developed a governance project to reduce project risk, improve project performance, increase stakeholder teaming, and save millions of dollars in project costs, while creating incremental value through its new governance process..

Agile Risk – Third Question Risk ManagementWhile Agile is the hot button of project management today, the real premises behind it are risk-based. A quick read through the Agile manifesto highlights just how risk-oriented Agile can be. Join Carl Pritchard as he shares how to leverage the highlights.

This presentation focuses on the inextricable links between Agile practices and rigorous risk governance. Carl examines the Agile manifesto and the three questions of the daily scrum from a risk perspective, highlighting the nature of quick wins both in a project perspective and from a risk perspective.
