CHURCH OUTREACH

Cedar’s church family visited Heritage Hall on March 27, for a time of song and fellowship with the residents.

Chestnut Grove is collecting for Rise Against Hunger during April. They have collected $145.

During April and May, the boys and girls of Jones Chapel are excited each Sunday to give their coins to the Rise Against Hunger mission opportunity.

On April 7, Mt. Tabor launched its “Make a Difference”Campaign by visiting the Heritage Nursing Home in Dillwyn. They introduced themselves, shared scripture, and had prayer with the residents. Barry Snoddy and Dennis Nicholas played guitar while all participants sang songs with the residents. They spent time with the residents just letting them know they care.

Barry and Lora Snoddy with resident, Betty Ruth Elliott.

On April 7, Mt. Zion children and youth hosted “Muffins for Missions”. They served muffins, juice, and coffee prior to Sunday School. They were able to raise $409 for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Everyone enjoyed this wonderful time of fellowship while supporting missions.

On April 21, Mt. Zion’s Sunrise Service included a walk through the events of Holy Week. They were led by the women on the way to the tomb as they recalled His Triumphal entry the Sunday before His betrayal, Peter’s denial, Jesus before Pilate, and His crucifixion. Pastor Woody Moore sang Tear Stains in the Sand at the cross. Observers ended at the empty tomb where Marilyn Snoddy sang I’ll Rise Again, as the cloth on the cross was changed from black to white. Annie Bryant, Tina Moss, and Doris Roberts were the women on the way to the tomb. The children were as follows: James Baughman – Peter, Trent Snoddy – Pilate, Jessica Oliver – Mary at the cross, Kaylee Snoddy & Khloe Snoddy – Angels at the empty tomb. Everyone enjoyed breakfast together afterwards.

Mulberry Grove sent cookies with the Hope for Appalachia team to be given to the staff in the schools visited. Members are donating items for the Bland Mission Trip in May. May’s other projects will be collecting monetary donations for the Rise Against Hunger meal packing event to be held in June and providing food for four primary students in the Weekend Backpack Ministry. Individuals continue to volunteer at the bi-monthly food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral, and the outreach ministry is ongoing.

One member of Sharon assisted with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank distribution in Dillwyn. Members and visitors of all ages enjoyed an afternoon Easter Egg Hunt at the home of Brenda and Mike Farrish. Current efforts are focused on monetary and in-kind contributions to support JRBA’s Bland Mission Team, and on growing the offering for Rise Against Hunger. Rose of Sharon continues delivering food and visiting with those who are sick or homebound.

MISSIONS COMMITTEE REPORT

I. Rise Against Hunger: We sincerely thank each individual and church for your generous gifts to Rise Against Hunger. Each of us is challenged to give a very generous gift for this worthy cause by Sunday, May 12, and each church is asked to turn in your hunger gifts by Wednesday, May 15. As all of us, individuals and churches, give generously we will have available funds for our biggest packaging event ever. Come out on June 9, at 3:00 PM, to Maysville Baptist to do your part!

II. Hope Boxes: Our Hope boxes for Appalachia were a blessing as our volunteers distributed around 1,300 Hope boxes in four schools in the Kentucky region of Appalachia. Our volunteers also freely shared Jesus with the students in the schools. Sincere thanks to those who prepared boxes, prayed, and to those who served as our missionaries to Appalachia.

Hope Distribution Trip – April 15 – 19Follow-Up from Team Members

I was so blessed to have been a part of the Hope for Appalachia Mission Trip. Our team had the privilege of seeing hundreds of children ask Jesus into their hearts! It was amazing to see the Kingdom of God grow every day! We also got to see how excited the children were to receive school supplies and hygiene items. I would like to thank everyone who filled a Hope box! You made a difference in their lives. Without your support, we would not have been able to be a blessing to these children!

Thanks,Darlene Woody (Chestnut Grove)

JRBA,What a great mission trip. The whole team worked together to spread the message of Jesus Christ to the students and teachers in Bell County, Kentucky. We were blessed as many students and teachers told us of their love for Jesus. We were also blessed when we knew that we were sent there to share about Jesus with those who were waiting to hear the Word. Thanks to the JRBA for supporting this mission trip and I recommend this mission trip to members of all the churches.

Your friend in Christ,Terry Towler (First Baptist Dillwyn)

Wayne and I accetped the call to go on this mission trip. God blessed us with new friends and with a closer look at the need for His Word to be shared. God’s seeds were sown and we saw some of them growing. The children really enjoyed interacting with us through games, and then in fellowship. They really loved the boxes that were sent by the churches. Thank you for your support.

Linda Gough (Mulberry Grove)

Thoroughly enjoyed the trip! My first mission trip like this. I had no idea what to expect, but enjoyed the interaction with the children and was impressed with our young people that witnessed to the students and gave testimonies to our group about their experiences. God bless each of them. Great team – we worked well together. A big THANK YOU to our Team Leader, Rev. Woody Moore – he did a fantastict job!

OTHER EVENTS>>>

On April 14, at Jones Chapel, there were many children at the lunch after church and for the Easter Egg Hunt! Everyone enjoyed the food and watching the kids hunt for eggs.

The Jones Chapel Youth Group worked together to clean up a yard in exchange for a donation toward their Youth Fund. They even had fun!

Easter Sunday brought out a large group of people for “Sonrise” Service at Jones Chapel. Pastor Richard brought a message, Gloria Tuttle provided special music, and then everyone had fellowship together over breakfast.

Pastor Richard Tuttle

The Easter Egg Hunt at Buckingham was well attended with lots of children and their relatives. The Easter Bunny visited the children while they were hunting eggs. Betty Toney shared the true meaning of Easter with the reading of The First Easter. Refreshments were served during a time of fellowship. Due to the nippy weather, Buckingham’s Sunrise Service was held indoors. After a wonderful sermon on the Risen Lord, and the change that He came to make in each of our lives, everyone was challenged to make a decision concerning this change. The men of the church prepared and served a delicious breakfast. Buckingham plans to recognize mothers on Mother’s day during the worship service. They are also planning a movie night with a pancake supper in the coming weeks.

JRBA LEARNS AND GROWS>>>

On April 10, Mt. Zion Youth met and participated in “Stations of the Cross”. As they prepared to celebrate Easter they were reminded of the sufffering

Jesus endured on His way to the cross and the gift of salvation through His sacrifice.

On April 13, Mt. Zion Children attended the Resurrection Walk in Goochland. This was geared towards 4 – 10 year olds. The walk started out with meeting Jesus as he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, went through Holy Week including His death and resurrection, and ended with a message from Nicodemus to “Go and tell everyone the Good News!” The chidlren said they had fun and learned a lot about Jesus.

Jones Chapel welcomes new members, Kevin and Angie Dunfee. They will honor graduates, Michelle Tuttle, Gloria Tuttle, and J Barden, on Sunday, May 19.

Dear JRBA Friends,Thank you for the generous gift you sent to my mother, Katherine Wingo, recently. It will be helpful in replacing clothing and other personal

items she lost in the first. We appreciate your kindness during this difficult time for my mother and our family.Sincerely,Nancy Wingo

JRBA Executive Board Members,Thank you for the gift card you sent after the tragic loss of my nephew, Mike Greer. Your calls, thoughts, prayers, and this tangible expression

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes: Ideas for shoeboxes 2019 from The OCC Lynchburg Area Team1. Scour after-Easter sales for small stuffed animals and plastic Easter eggs – fill the eggs with fun things like small balls, toys, jewelry, hair

accessories, or even a hand-written note…those eggs are a “mini-WOW item” since nearly all of the kids receiving these boxes have never had the excitement of opening a colorful plastic Easter egg before!

2. A great, fun craft project that can involve folks of all ages is helping to make jump ropes from old t-shirts. Instructions can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePDAoBBZt7M. Ask folks to donate t-shirts from their over-flowing drawers for this project!

3. While a plastic shoebox is a great gift, OCC has learned over time that the cheap, plastic ones are often breaking before they reach a child’s hands, due to the extreme temperatures around the world, as well as just being crushed in the shipping process. OCC has specially made plastic shoeboxes available at https://store.samaritanspurse.org/p-1-preprinted-shoeboxesplastic-pack-of-12.aspx that were created to withstand those shipping conditions without breaking. (Hobby Lobby will have them in stock for 2019 at a cost of $3 plus tax.)

4. Remove unnecessary packaging from the items in the shoeboxes so that you can fit more items in and make less trash for countries that have very poor ways of dealing with it. Also, some of you like to add tissue paper to the box, and while it is colorful and pretty, remember again that the tissue paper will quickly become trash.

5. August 23 – 25, 2019, will be the dates for area OCC events featuring shoebox recipients who will share their stories. 6. Link to OCC’s videos: https://video.samaritanspurse.org/channel/operation-christmas-child/ 7. Remember to order your shoeboxes, both cardboard and plastic, by late summer/early fall. Here is the link for all of the OCC resources

that you’ll need: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/ideas-group-resources/ .

The Cedar family extends sympathy to the famly of Frances Harris Lester who passed away on March 19. Her funeral service was at Cedar on March 22. Sympathy is also extended to the family of Lois Taylor LeSueur who passed away on April 16. Her burial was at Cedar on April 18. Both were long-time members.

Chestnut Grove extends their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Joan Carol Repass Ewers, wife of Johnny Ewers, who passed away on April 22. They are both members of Chestnut Grove.

JRBA Quarterly Executive Board Meeting April 8, 2019

Rev. Michael Khol, Moderator, opened the meeting by giving a short devotional based on Matthew 22:37 – Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This was the answer to the question posed to Jesus, “What is the most important commandment?” Rev. Khol wondered if Jesus was being redundant in His reply or were there differences. He did some defining: To love with all your heart is a more emotional component, that is a “feeling of love”,and is not necessarily logical. To love with your mind is more logical and indicates that the more we learn of God (by reading Scripture), the more we can see His character. The hardest part is to love with your soul. Rev. Khol suggested that we think of our soul, in this instance, as our DNA, that is who we are, and realize that the longer we walk with God, the more we become as He is. That is “who He has become within me”. Rev. Khol encouraged us to love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Love the LORD your God with all your heart through worship, prayer, and song. Love the LORD your God with all your mind by spending more time in His Word, allowing you to know more of Him. Love the LORD your God with all your soul by applying what you have read in His Word. He then led us in prayer.

Rev. Khol called the meeting to order and asked for the roll call of churches. There were 17 in attendance, representing 8 churches. The minutes of the January 21, 2019, Executive Board Meeting were presented and approved. The Treasurer’s Quarterly Report was presented by Mrs. Judy Ownby, Treasurer. As of March 31, 2019, the checking account balance was $35,593.08, which included Additional Missions Fund - $1,800.00, Rise Against Hunger – $4,248.06, and Mission Trips Fund - $500.00. Receipts for the quarter total $10,375.85, which included Churches - $6,606.60, Rise Against Hunger - $3,407.95, Additional Missions - $200.00, VBMB-Alma Hunt - $153.12, and Interest of $8.18. Disbursements totaled $5,057.40, which included $650.00 for individuals going on Mission Trips. The report was approved as presented. Next Mrs. Betty Toney, Chair, presented the John E. Mann, Sr. Benevolence Fund Report. From January 1 – March 31, 2019, one family was assisted with an overdue electric bill, three individuals were assisted after losing everything in a fire, and one family was assisted with rent. In addition, our annual donation was made to the Buckingham Volunteer Fire Department, a Food Lion gift card was purchased to have on hand in case of need, and new checks were purchased for the newly opened checking account. Total disbursements were $609.47. There were contributions totaling $1,050.00 from First Baptist Dillwyn, Mt. Zion, Enon,. and Goshen. The checking account balance was $5,882.28, with two outstanding checks of $100 each. The available balance stands at $5,682.28. The report was approved as presented.

Rev. Khol then gave his Moderator’s report. He asked for prayer for Buckingham and Tar Wallet as they continue to seek a pastor. He also asked for prayer for the 8 people from JRBA gong to Kentucky and the 12 going to Bland Ministry Center. He led us in prayer for the 8 who will be leaving on April 15 to distribute HOPE boxes and to share the Gospel with the students in Kentucky schools. Rev.Khol announced that Antioch (Scottsville) is going to have a mission trip to Ghana for Women’s and Children’s Ministry and stated that anyone interested in going should contact Rev. David Vogt. He gave an update on the HOPE boxes, saying that the JRBA had donated 978 boxes out of a total of approximately 1,300. He reminded us that the meal packing event for Rise Against Hunger is scheduled for June 9, at 3:00 PM, at the Maysville Baptist Multi-Purpose Center and that donations-to-date

total $4,966.06. If our donations get to $8.500, the cost per meal goes down. Donations are due by May 15 at the JRBA Office. Rev. Khol announced that the Buckingham Baccalaureate would be on May 5, at 4:00 PM, at the Buckingham County High School Gym. No information has yet been received about the Cumberland Baccalaureate. He reminded us that if we order from SmileAmazon.com, JRBA receives a percentage of the order at no cost to the ordering individual. He asked that any Youth Groups going on a Mission trip this summer notify JRBA. Rev. Khol commented that the pastors and he had met with Rev. Skip Wallace, BGAV Central Region Field Strategist at the JRBA Office and at the Pastors’ Huddle. He also reminded us that the BGAV needs nominations for Boards and Committees by May 1. In addition, he announced that Mrs. Phyllis Tyler, JRBA Secretary, sends her heartfelt thanks for the prayers and concern expressed by the JRBA in the loss of her nephew this past week. Rev. Jimmy Dunn suggested that the JRBA give Mrs. Tyler something tangible to express our love and concern. Mrs. Audrey Ragland moved that we give her a certificate for a massage at the Spa. This motion was seconded and approved. Mrs. Ragland said she would take care of arrangements.

Missions Committee: Rev. Jimmy Dunn thanked everyone for their hard work and stated that he was excited over the three major mission trips planned. He reminded us that everyone can do something to help, pointing out that the Bland Mission trip needs plastic shopping bags and jars of peanut butter. Rev. Woody Moore thanked everyone for the response to Boxes of Hope and especially thanked Rev. John Moxley and First Baptist Dillwyn for allowing him to store the boxes there. He commented that he is already receiving hats and gloves for the fall. He stated that there are 1,250 boxes Hope boxes already in shipping boxes, ready to go. He asked for our prayers for the delivery and the team.

Finance Committee: Judy Ownby, Chair, stated that there have been two requests for funds that cannot wait for the budget planning session. One is from More Than Nets, and the other is an appeal to assist in the cost of gravel for the parking lot at the Crystal Cathedral,

10 where the food distribution, in which we participate, takes place. The committee recommended that we give a donation of $100 to each request. The motion was approved unanimously. Rev. Khol then encouraged people to come and help with the Blue Ridge Food Ministry saying that it is a good way to “brush shoulders” with the community.

There were no other Committee Reports, old business, or new business. Rev. Khol reiterated several announcements. In addition, it was announced that Mrs. Sallie Mowbray is being treated for cancer, and that Nancy Morris’s husband is in the hospital. Rev. Khol announced that Spreading God’s Gifts would be holding a fund raiser at Mulberry Grove on Saturday, April 13, at 5:00 PM. There being no other business, Terry Towler made a motion to adjourn. It was seconded and approved. The meeting was closed in prayer by Rev. Woody Moore.

JRBA WMU ANNUAL MEETING Sunday, April 14, 2019

The Annual meeting of the JRBA WMU met at Tar Wallet with 17 in attendance representing 6 churches. The weather may have been a factor in the low attendance as bad storms were forecast for the afternoon. Thankfully, they did not happen and all arrived safely home. Also many were leaving early the next morning for Appalachia to deliver the Hope Boxes that had been collected. After a welcome and inspiring devotional by Victoria McHenry, Allen Cooper, of Joyful Noise Ministry led us in singing several songs. Nancy Morris had a bad respiratory infection and couldn’t sing. After a short business session led by Betty Toney during which the minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed and the financial report was accepted as printed the present slate of officers were presented and voted on. The mission report was presented and it is always amazing how much the small churches in our association accomplish for Jesus. The attendance banner went to Tar Wallet. There was a tie, but Mt. Zion graciously let Tar Wallet have it since they had never had it before. The banner for the most miles walked should have gone to Mt. Zion, but again they gave it to Buckingham. The trophy for the most miles walked went to Lisa Flippen from Mt. Zion.

After the hymn, “Footsteps of Jesus”, Betty Toney introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Laura Davis, Director of Mission Involvement WMUV, who showed slides of many areas needing pure water. She introduced the “Pure Water, Pure Love” emphasis of the WMUV. The goals of Pure Water, Pure Love are:

To supply missionaries with water filters that supply their families with clean water.

To provide clean water for people who are served by missionaries.

To supply missions teams with water filters they can use for short term missions trips.

Hatti is one of the places that have been helped.Andy Birchfield works alongside a team at the Children’s Hope orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti, where they care for 51 children.  The team works hard to meet the spiritual needs of the community, but simple physical needs, like clean water, were going unmet.  Around 2015, Pure Water, Pure Love partnered with Children’s Hope to dig a well and install a filtration system that not only provides for the orphanage but also the entire community. The system produces 50 gallons of clean water per minute, giving the community of Jacmel their first taste of pure water. They have even trained staff and other locals to operate the system, giving the community a sense of empowerment.  Through telling the community members that this water was provided out of Christ’s pure love, they have seen at least 14 members of the community come to faith in Christ. More than that, this rush of clean water has opened doors for the missionaries in Jacmel to share the name of Jesus, the true Living Water, with the community. The team at Children’s Hope has

discovered that the best way to meet the vital spiritual needs of people is to follow the example of Jesus’ ministry on earth—provide for their physical needs. That is the goal of PWPL well projects in communities all around the world.

Laura shared more stories of places that have been given not only clean water, but the Living Water provided by sharing Jesus. She also shared the many opportunities to serve through WMUV.

Allen Cooper, led the group in 2 more songs after which Laura Higgins dismissed with prayer.
