Friday 17th to Thursday 23rd Augustat Marnaves (81 Tarn), S-W France

Marnaves Summer Baroque takes place for the eleventh year running in the delightful surroundings of a small French country village, making use of its 12th-century church, a spacious salle de musique and the meeting room in the Mairie—all with excellent acoustics. Daily tuition is available led by Margaret Faultless (violin), Sam Stadlen (Baroque cello and viols) Lucy Robinson (viols) and Andrew Wilson-Dickson (continuo), in large and small ensembles and masterclasses—in which each student has the opportunity to study a solo work of their choice. Two lectures are presented during the week and the tutors will give a concert. MSB culminates with a course concert in the local church, apéro with the villagers and a party. Free Alexander Technique lessons are offered by Tim Soar to all participants who wish. Tuition is in English, but French and Spanish is spoken.

The course is for players of violin, viola, 'cello, double bass or violone, viols and keyboard. We are restricting the string ensemble to 5, 4, 2, 3, 1., the intention is to achieve a balanced ensemble of skilled players. They will need either to have ability in period playing or to be good and flexible

modern players willing to adapt to the use of an early bow on gut strings. Players will need instruments with a baroque set-up and baroque bow or at a minimum a modern instrument with gut strings ready to play at A=415. The course can offer a certain number of Baroque bows and instruments; please enquire. Continuo keyboard players are invited to play both organ and harpsichord—the salle de musique houses an early 19th-century organ and French and Italian harpsichords. A consort of six viols plus a violone are available and time allocated during the day for viol consorts for those who wish to play. Individual lessons are offered on the viol to both advanced players and to those wishing to play the instrument for the first time.

Students make their own breakfasts together, from the Marnaves boulangerie, on the terrace outside Maison Adam. Let us know your dietary needs.

‘Maggie’s tuition was phenomenal!Biographical notes

Margaret Faultless performs music from Monteverdi to the present day, but is best-known as a performer of eighteenth-century repertoire and historical performance practice. With a reputation as a distinguished leader and director of both period instrument and modern orchestras, Margaret is also instrumental in fostering the talents of the next generation of musicians in her capacities as Head of Historical Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, Director of Performance at the University of Cambridge and Director of Studies for the European Union Baroque Orchestra. For over twenty years she has been a co-leader of The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, directing

the orchestra on a regular basis; she also plays a significant role in their education programme for young professionals.  For twelve years, Margaret led the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, notably as concert-master and soloist in their ten-year project to perform and record J.S Bach’s Cantatas. A passionate chamber musician, she was a member of the London Haydn Quartet for ten years, and played in a duo focusing on the sonatas of Beethoven and Brahms, investigating nineteenth-century

performance traditions. Margaret also lectures on performance practice, her special interests being leadership and social interactions in ensembles before the age of silent conducting. She is an Honorary Fellow of Birmingham Conservatoire and an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music.

Sam Stadlen (BA, PhD (York)) has been a member of Fretwork since 2015, appearing with the group both live and on the radio, in the UK and internationally. Other groups include Chelys Consort, the Stanesby Players, Follia, L’Academie du Roi Soleil, and viol duo Ensemble Touché with Ibrahim Aziz. Recent tours include chamber and solo performances in the US and Canada. Sam is Professor of Viol Consorts at the Royal College of Music. He has a PhD in the influences of poetry and declamation on the composition and performance of pièces de viole.

The husband and wife team of Lucy Robinson (BA (York), PhD (Cantab)) and Andrew Wilson-Dickson (LRAM, ARCO, MA, Mus B (Cantab), D Phil (York)) has been involved in early music for many years: performing, teaching and enabling. Lucy was a pupil of Wieland Kuijken and has played her gamba across the world. She is an expert scholar on the viol and French Baroque

music, and was Head of Postgraduate Programmes and Research at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for 12 years. Andrew taught at the same College for many years as Head of Early Music. He is a gifted keyboard player with a special interest in continuo playing and improvisation. He directs the professional Devon Baroque Orchestra, and the Welsh Camerata Choir. Andrew is a long-established composer with a particular enjoyment in writing for early instruments.

Tim Soar is an Alexander Technique teacher with many years’ experience working with musicians. He has a particular reputation for the quality of his hands-on work. Tim divides his working time between Alexander teaching and making viols, and he is nearing the end of a major commission for a ground-breaking set of five late-sixteenth-century viols. Tim is an amateur recorder player, viol player and Aikido practitioner.

Plenty of music will be provided. But please can everyone bring some chamber music, and those who wish to play in a masterclass should bring some solo music.
