Instructional Goal

What should the learner be able to do after successful completion this tutorial?

Teachers will have an increase level of knowledge and understanding of how to provide adequate supervision and reduction of the number off and types of injuries occurred on the playground.

Summative Assessment & Learning Outcomes

As students navigate through the tutorial, they will be given practice exercises to test their level of knowledge and understanding through practice exercises as new information is presented through the tutorial. This format of applying multimedia principles to engage the student and enable them to receive feedback from their performance. These unique features and methods of instructional support will help the student improve upon pre-existing knowledge.

Students will learn to apply concepts learned in an everyday scenario through practice exercises. By providing opportunities for the learner to practice will help them to illustrate the accomplishment of the overall intended learning objective of understanding how to recognize potential hazards on the playground.

The students will be administered a pre-test with 5-6 questions to measure participants knowledge before and after the training. The pre-test will be interactive, assistance will be available upon request.

The learner will take a quiz after each training module and must pass each quiz with a 70% success rate.

THE FACTS

• Over 500,00 children suffer serious playground-related injuries each year that requires emergency medical treatment. (Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 1999)

• $1.2 billion is spent each year on playground related injuries (US Office of Technology, 1995)

• An average of 15 children die each year doing what they love--playing

Page 6: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

THE SOLUTION

• Play areas should be planned

• Use the information gained through research to create safe and appropriately challenging playgrounds.

• Know, understand and adhere to the standards

PRACTICE QUIZ

Instructions (Practice Quiz)

•On the next slide, you will be presented with an image similar to what you have seen throughout this tutorial. Just like a Multiple Choice format, you will be asked to make the correct selection from a list of options in answering the question correctly.•Do not worry!! This is a pre-test, and it is only used to test help to move the learner from an unfamiliar zone into a more familiar zone. The next four slides are transformational slides used similar to a flow chart. Each slide contains two squares that become animated when the learner clicks on the square. The arrow simulates the square flipping around to reveal the multiple choice answers.•The pre-test will ask to answer questions to assess pre/post knowledge before and after the presentation. If you fail to answer the question correctly, you will be prompted to select again.•When you answer the question correctly, you can then move on.•Click “NEXT” to continue.

What does S.A.F.E stand for?

NPPS has identified four major risk areas in the playground environment

S= Supervision

A= Age Appropriate Design

F= Fall Surfacing

E= Equipment Maintenance

Page 12: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

“S” is for Supervision

• Supervision is the active monitoring of the play environment accomplished be moving through the area and scanning frequently in order to help ensure safety and promote injury.

• Paying attention to hazardous situations in the play environment.

• Providing support for children’s play and responding to emergencies on the playground.

Page 13: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Can children be easily viewed when playing?

Yes- Providers with movement can see through equipment

No-There is a large wall that does not allow the teacher to see through the wall. The teacher will have to move around the wall to see what is occurring on the other side.

For whom is the playground equipment intended for?

Play Area for children ages 5

years to 12 years

Play Area for children 6

months to 2 years.

Defining Use Zone

A Use Zone is an area under and around the equipment where protective surfacing is required.

Page 21: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Surface Maintenance

Page 22: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Is the play area free of foreign objects?

Is the play area free of water puddles, snow or poor drainage?

Standing water is an indication of poor drainage.

Page 23: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Is the play area free of animal feces?

Are the pour-in-place surfaces firmly attached

to the underlying surface?

Page 24: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

“E” is forEQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE

Page 25: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Are play components free from broken parts?

Page 26: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Is the equipment free from missing or protruding parts?

The plexiglass in the play panel is missing.

This bolt is protruding from this climber. It posses a hazard to children. No protrusions should extend beyond the face of any of the 2 ½ threads.

Page 27: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Are playground equipment pieces free from noticeable gaps that can entangle drawstrings or entrap body parts?

If no, name the part with the noticeable gap.

• Strangulation is the leading cause of playground fatalities.

• Slides are common places where you will find gaps where children’s clothing could become entangled. The picture points out where gaps has been filled.

Page 28: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Are equipment pieces free of places where head entrapment can occur?

Head entrapment occurs when the body gets through the space but the child’s head cannot pass through the same space. A head entrapment exists if a space in equipment is greater than 3 ½ inches and less than 9 inches.

Page 29: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Are metal equipment and play components free from rust?

Is wooden equipment free from splinters?

As you can clearly see exposed metal will rust. Rust can weaken the equipment parts and will eventually create a serious playground hazard. Rusted parts should be replaced with parts only purchased from the manufacturer.

Wood structures must be treated on a regular basis to avoid weather related problems such as; splinters and rotted wood.

Page 30: Web based tutorial.the essence of playground safety

Are the steering wheels completely enclosed?

It is recommended that steering wheels be completed enclosed. The blue steering wheel has caused children to get their hands entrapped.

Check to make sure that there are not pinch, crush, and shearing points.
