An exciting season of concerts awaits, performed by our own nationally recognized faculty and classical and jazz resident ensembles. Guest appearances by jazz masters and emerging classical artists round out a diverse season of exhilarating performances!

We celebrate the return of Prometheus Trio, Philomusica String Quartet and We Six Jazz Ensemble and announce the inaugural season of new Latin Jazz resident ensemble Orquesta Tumbao. Conservatory Nights offers great music in multiple genres, served up cabaret-style. Conservatory Sundays presents afternoon enjoyment with performances in guitar, brass, voice, piano, and strings.

Along with some of the finest music in Milwaukee we invite you to exciting events during the year, including the Vista del Lago Social Club and Friday Night Jazz Jams. November brings our annual Performathon and 12 Days of Shopping online auction. Spring 2013 features Salsa music and the return to 1940s-style Big Band Music with Swing 2.0. There’s something for everyone at the Conservatory!

In the mid 1990s, The New York Times described Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, and Bill Stewart as “the best organ trio of the last decade.” The trio, which has now been together

for over 20 years, has been recognized for charting new ground, with its synergistic playing, yet thoughtful music. They have recorded eight albums and one DVD together,

all of which display their distinctive sound, whether exploring the depths of jazz standards, or playing their own original compositions.

Their newest offering, Live at Smalls, is their first live record and captures the group’s energy and creativity from the New York City jazz club that helped garner their

reputation as one of the greatest organ trios playing today.

Larry Goldings, organ With his signature Hammond organ style and versatility on many keyboards, Boston native Larry Goldings (b. 1968) has traversed not only the wide spectrum of jazz where he is perhaps best known, but also the worlds of funk, pop, and electronic music. High in demand as a sideman, Goldings’ sound can be heard on scores of albums by artists in virtually every musical genre. As a leader, he has released 13 albums, many of which feature his long time organ trio with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart. Over the years, Goldings has been closely associated with Maceo Parker, Jim Hall, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Madeleine Peyroux, and since 2002, with folk/pop icon, James Taylor. In 2007, Goldings, Jack DeJohnette and John Scofield, received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Jazz Instrumental Album Individual or Group for their album, Trio Beyond - Saudades (ECM). Goldings also is active as a composer, arranger, and producer. His compositions reflect a wide listening palette—from Duke Ellington to Gabriel Fauré—in addition to more contemporary artists like Randy Newman, Björk, and Chico Buarque. Goldings’ songs have been recorded by Michael Brecker, Till Brönner, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Dorough, Jim Hall, Jane Monheit, Gaby Moreno, John Scofield, Mark Sholtez, Sia, Curis Stigers, and Toots Thielemans. Goldings’ music also has been featured in television shows and motion pictures, including, “The Office,” “Proof,” and “Funny People.”

Peter Bernstein, guitarNew York guitarist Peter Bernstein (b. 1967) has been an integral part of the world jazz scene since 1989. He has been sought out by musicians from all generations—touring with legendary players such as Jimmy Cobb, Lou Donaldson, Bobby Hutcherson, Lee Konitz, Sonny Rollins, and Dr. Lonnie Smith and jazz stars of today such as Eric Alexander, Brad Mehldau, Diana Krall, Nicholas Payton, and

Joshua Redman. His recognizable guitar voice graces over a hundred recordings. As a leader, Bernstein has recorded six highly regarded albums, displaying not only his masterful

interpretations of standards, but also his inventive and lyrical compositions. His latest project, Monk (Criss Cross), shows Bernstein’s deep understanding of the complexities of Thelonious Monk’s music, while never becoming overshadowed by Monk’s powerful personality. Bernstein

also has taught at the Julliard School, Berklee College of Music, North Texas State University, the New School Jazz Program, and the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam. Guitar legend Jim Hall has said that Bernstein “is the most impressive young guitarist I’ve heard... He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste, and has paid attention to the past as well as the future.”

Bill Stewart, drumsOriginally from Des Moines, Iowa, drummer Bill Stewart (b. 1967) made his name as the rhythmic force behind guitarist John Scofield’s band, collaborating with him for five years between 1990 and 1995. He is now one of the most sought after jazz drummers in the world. Stewart’s playing is distinguished by its melodic focus, and its polyrhythmic, or layered, character. Although his drumming bears the influence of various melodic and hard swinging drummers who preceded him, including Max Roach, Roy Haynes, and Jack DeJohnette, Stewart’s voice is clearly his own, and already is influencing a younger generation of drummers. Stewart has toured extensively with Michael Brecker, Kevin Hays, Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, and Maceo Parker. His longstanding association with John Scofield has led to some of the highest quality records and live concerts in modern jazz. An excellent composer in his own right, Stewart has made several records as a leader that predominantly feature his own music, bearing the same thoughtfulness, humor, and impeccable taste that one hears in his playing.

Eric Jacobson, trumpet WCM faculty member since 2008. Eric Jacobson is a professional trumpet player, clinician, composer and private instructor residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Eric freelances in the Milwaukee and Chicago area playing in groups such as D’CalleSon, De La Buena, Kings Go Forth, Tristan Royalty Squad, Jeno/Eric Latin Sextet, and leading his own jazz quintet. As of 2011 Eric is now a member of the talented We Six resident jazz sextet. Eric has been fortunate to experience performances and lessons with well-known artists such as Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, Jim Rotondi, Tim Hagans,Tito Puente Jr., Eric Benet, and Wynton Marsalis. Eric was recently recognized in Jazzscope magazine by David Hoffman as having “a gorgeous round sound on both the trumpet and flugelhorn” and “on his way to being a jazz giant.” Eric has also taught at MYSO jazz studies, Wauwatosa West High School Jazz Ensemble and assisting the Wauwatosa West Marching Band. In 2001 Eric released his debut jazz CD entitled Inspiration which features some of Milwaukee’s best jazz musicians as well as New York trumpet sensation Brian Lynch. Eric just released his second Album in 2011 called Two A.M. Live at the Jazz Estate. Between 2010 and 2011 Eric toured with Kings Go Forth, traveling in 48 states, 15 countries. Eric Schoor, tenor saxophone Saxophonist Eric Schoor, a native of Southeastern Wisconsin, currently performs extensively throughout the Milwaukee area. Eric has had the good fortune of working with many of the area’s most accomplished jazz artists. He is currently a student at UWMilwaukee pursuing two B.F.A.s (Jazz Studies and

Multiple Woodwinds). Valuing diversity in music, Eric performs in a variety of styles from bebop to classical to pit orchestras to funk/ rock. Eric can be heard regularly in Milwaukee’s jazz venues such as The Jazz Estate and Caroline’s as well as Thursdays at

O’Donoghue’s with Gary Christiansen’s All-Star SUPERband. Paul Silbergleit, guitar WCM faculty member since 1996. B.A., Oberlin

College. An accomplished jazz composer as well as performer, Mr. Silbergleit has played clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout the area as both a leader and a sideman. He has appeared with Jack McDuff, Jon Faddis, Richie Cole, Tierney Sutton, Melvin Rhyne, Brian Lynch, David Hazeltine, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, among others. Both his 1996 debut CD Silberglicity (on which other Conservatory faculty members are featured) and his 2003 release, My New Attitude, have made it onto the jazz charts with nationwide airplay, and he can also be heard on the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. Mr. Silbergleit also teaches at Cardinal Stritch University, and is a featured instructor in Hal Leonard’s Guitar Licks Goldmine DVD series. Mark Davis, piano WCM faculty member since 1992. B.S., with honors, Skidmore College. Mr. Davis is Chair of the Jazz Institute and a member of the Conservatory’s We Six. His WCM instructors included Adelaide Banaszynski and David Hazeltine. Later studies included work with jazz legend Barry Harris. He has performed with many jazz luminaries, including Jimmy Heath, Charles McPherson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, and Frank Morgan. Jeff Hamann, bass WCM faculty member since 1998. A member of the Conservatory’s We Six jazz sextet, Mr. Hamann attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, winning first place in the Jazz Studies Scholarship competition four years in a row. He has worked as a clinician and jazz festival judge in the Milwaukee, Kenosha and Waukesha public schools as well as at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison and UW-Green Bay. Performing with such well-known artists as Frank Morgan, Marlena Shaw, Steve Allen, and Eric Alexander, he has toured throughout the Midwest and has appeared at Jazz Yantra in Bombay, India. Jeff is also the bassist on Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know show, airing Saturdays on Wisconsin Public Radio and broadcast nationally on NPR stations. He can be heard on the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say.

David Bayles, drums WCM faculty member since 1997. B.F.A. Music Education UW-Milwaukee. A member of the Conservatory’s We Six, Mr. Bayles has worked with such jazz artists as Slide Hampton, Barry Harris, David Hazeltine, Brian Lynch, Jack McDuff, Bob Mintzer, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Melvin Rhyne, and Ernie Watts. Dave performs at jazz clubs and music festivals throughout the Midwest. Recording credits include the Luis Diaz Quintet (On the Edge), the Curt Hanrahan Quintet (Hang Time), the Juli Wood Quintet (Movin’ and Groovin’) and the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. Dave’s orchestral credits include timpani with the Rome Festival Orchestra and percussion with the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. As a clinician for Yamaha Music Corporation and Zildjian Cymbals, he travels and teaches widely throughout the U.S. and Canada. Dave also teaches percussion at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, WI.

Timothy Klabunde, violin WCM faculty member since 2005. Mr. Klabunde is the Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and has been an orchestra member since 1980. He was a violin and chamber music student of Leonard Sorkin, Abram Loft, Bernard Zaslav and George Sopkin (the Fine Arts Quartet) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Mr. Klabunde has served as Concertmaster for the Milwaukee Ballet and Milwaukee Civic Orchestras and has appeared as violin soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra and the Manitowoc Symphony. Chamber music appearances have included the Festival de Belles Artes in San Miguel, Mexico, live on WFMT Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Series, WPR broadcasts from Madison’s Elvejem and Chazen Art Museum and the Fourth Annual International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. This year includes concerts at the Washington Island Music Festival and as a member of the Prometheus Trio at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Mr. Klabunde is an adjunct instructor of violin and a member of the Clarus piano trio at Cardinal Stritch University. Scott Tisdel, cello WCM faculty member since 2000. Associate Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Symphony, has also served as Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra since his arrival in Milwaukee in 1987, and has appeared as soloist with both ensembles, as well as with the Waukesha and Manitowoc Symphonies and the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra. Prior to his arrival in Milwaukee, Mr. Tisdel served as Principal

Cello of the Florida Orchestra in Tampa and was a member of both the Oakland and San Jose Symphony Orchestras in California. In addition to being the founding cellist of the Prometheus Trio, he was a founding member of the Conservatory’s Paganini Trio and the Strings in the Mountains

Stefanie Jacob, pianist WCM faculty member since 1987. Stefanie Jacob made her solo debut with the Boston Pops at age 17 and her Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1984. An avid chamber

musician, she was twice awarded second prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and was awarded Indiana University’s Leo Weiner Prize for Chamber Music. Ms. Jacob has performed as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra and the Waukesha and Manitowoc Symphonies, and has appeared as a collaborating artist on Milwaukee’s Artist Series at the Pabst and WFMT-Chicago’s nationally broadcast Dame Myra Hess Series. She has recorded for the Arundax, CRI, Fleur de Son and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music labels. A graduate of Harvard and Indiana Universities, Ms. Jacob taught at the University of Tampa from 1985 to 1987, and since then at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, receiving an award for Excellence in Studio Teaching from the Milwaukee Civic Music Association in 2007. In addition to her work with the Prometheus Trio, she also performs as the Duo Coriolan with husband Scott, and as the Duo Cosi with violinist Susan Waterbury.

Patty Moeling, fluteHouston resident Patty Moeling is a classical flutist, teacher and entrepreneur with two successful concert series, HausMusik, Houston, and the Ling

Series, Lindsborg, Kansas. She initiated the music therapy program at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in 1990 and continues to support it through annual benefit concerts since 2010. Patty teaches in Houston and has a large studio of middle and high school flutists. She is also intermediary for HausMusiks community program which funds private lessons for children from low income families. She has been heard in performance on WFMT “Live” in Chicago, both Summer and Winter Classics, Sitka, Alaska, Park City International Music Festival, Piatigorsky Foundation Tour and most recently at the Barendrecht Klassiek series, Barendrecht, Holland. Patty has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in the United States and the Netherlands and has had the pleasure of performing with great artists such as Charlie Castleman, Terry King, Paul Rosenthal, Arturo Delmoni, Ben Kamins, Michael Webster, Jeffrey Solow, Oleh Krysa, David Kim, Anthony Elliot, Leone Buyse and Robert Moeling.

Robert Moeling, pianoA native of the Netherlands, pianist Robert Moeling has received international acclaim as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist. He has

been a concerto soloist with orchestras such as the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Denver Chamber Orchestra. As a collaborative artist he has performed with the likes of Joshua Bell, Cho Liang Lin, Lynn Harrell and Karl Leister. He is a frequent guest with organizations such as the Park City Chamber Music Society, the Sitka Festival, the Amsterdam Chamber Music Society, Anchorage Winter

Classics, Chamber Music International, Dallas and the Texas Music Festival. A devoted pedagogue, he has held posts at the University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Conservatory, Bethany College, Concordia University and Codarts, the University for the Performing Arts in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He is currently Artist Teacher of piano in the preparatory program at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Together with flutist Leone Buyse and clarinetist Michael Webster, Moeling is pianist of The Webster Trio, in residence at Rice University. Among his numerous, critically acclaimed recordings are the complete cello and piano works of Mendelssohn, Sonatas of Brahms and Liszt, songs of Brahms, the complete piano works of Dutch composer Willem Pijper and World Wide Webster, a recent Webster Trio CD with works of Debussy, Dvorak, Brahms and Gottschalk. Moeling has been artistic director of the Wisconsin Conservatory’s Faculty/Guest Artist Series and the Ling Chamber Society in Lindsborg, Kansas. With his wife, flutist Patrice Moeling, he is currently co-artistic director of HausMusik in Houston, Texas. After a performance of the late maestro’s piano works, Leonard Bernstein called Robert Moeling “an exceptionally sensitive performer.”

ARDIENTE QUARTETThe Ardiente Quartet is pleased to perform in its inaugural year at the Conservatory’s Music Therapy Benefit Concert. Formed in January of 2012, Ardiente’s members are young professional musicians who have a vision to bring classical music to the public in an accessible way. In an effort to keep classical music relevant, Ardiente has performed in nontraditional venues throughout Milwaukee, such as The Sugar Maple in Bay View and The Hamilton on the Lower East Side.

Elizabeth Teal, violinWCM Violin/Viola faculty member since 2010. M.M. in String Pedagogy from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, B.M.E in Instrumental Music Education and



Certificate in Violin Performance from The Florida State University. Working as part of the Suzuki program at WCM, Elizabeth received her Suzuki training through the Suzuki Institute of Indianapolis and the Chicago Suzuki Institute. While in Florida, Elizabeth began her teaching career working with the Tallahassee Youth Orchestras. At the Masters level, she received an assistantship to teach violin lessons with the Inner City Music Program through the String Academy of Wisconsin. After graduating from UWM, Elizabeth served as the assistant orchestra director for Lake Bluff and Atwater Elementary Schools in Shorewood, WI. An active performer in the Milwaukee area, Elizabeth free-lances with the Racine, Festival City, Kenosha, and Green Bay symphony orchestras. She is a founding member of the Ardiente Quartet, formed in 2012.

Erin Dupree Jakubowski, violinWCM member since April 2010. Erin has studied the violin since the age of 6 years old, learning in the Suzuki method. In 2004, Erin won Honorable Mention in the Toledo Symphony Young Artist’s competition. Erin’s first orchestral involvement was with the Ann Arbor School for Performing Arts, the first of ten different orchestras, including University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra and many regional orchestras in Iowa. She has served principle roles in five of the ten orchestras, including principle second violinist, and concertmaster. In both 2004 and 2005, Erin performed a complete orchestral program in Avery Fisher Hall in New York City with the New Conservatory of Dallas. She attended University of Iowa on numerous scholarships and holds a Bachelor’s in Violin Performance. Aside from orchestra, she was a member of the Shirotan quartet, she has participated in both chamber and orchestral workshops. During her undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa, Erin began her teaching career, maintaining a studio of over 15 students while in Iowa. She completed certification for Suzuki Books 1 and 2 under Christie Felsing at the Preucil School of

Music. She has also completed teacher training for books 3 and 4 under Kathy Wood and Ann Montzka-Smelser. Her primary violin teachers have been Jillienne Bowers of the Toledo Symphony, Arkady Fomin of the Dallas Symphony, and Scott Conklin of the University of Iowa.

Al Bartosik, violaAl has been involved in music for most of his life. He attended Illinois State University and completed his Bachelor’s degree in violin performance, studying with Dr. Sarah Gentry. He moved to Milwaukee in 2002 to continue his studies, completing graduate courses and studying violin, viola, and chamber music with Dr. Myron Kartman at UW-Milwaukee. Although classically trained, Mr. Bartosik enjoys playing a variety of musical styles and can be seen performing violin and viola in various capacities throughout the Milwaukee area.

Kristian Ring, celloWCM faculty member since the fall of 2011. BM in Cello Performance from the University of South Carolina. MM in Cello Pedagogy from UW-Milwaukee. Kristian is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. He has performed in orchestral, chamber and recital settings across the United States. Notable venues include the Piccolo Spoleto (Charleston, SC) and Aspen (CO) music festivals, among others. Outside of his classical career, Mr. Ring has also appeared on several occasions in productions of folk and contemporary popular music. He performed with an ensemble at the 2008 Ola Belle Reed Bluegrass Festival in North Carolina, and can be heard on various tracks by several artists and young film composers from the Southeast. His former students have won principal positions in the Youth Philharmonic, Tri-dac and All-state orchestras of South Carolina.

Matthew Schroeder, fingerstyle and rock guitarWCM Faculty member since 1992. B.F.A. with honors in Guitar Performance, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Matthew Schroeder is a Milwaukee based WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) winning guitarist who is equally at home on acoustic or electric guitar. Matt is one of a handful of players to graduate, with honors, from the short lived cooperative program between The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and The University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee with a performance degree in American fingerstyle guitar. As a fingerstyle guitarist, Mr. Schroeder studied under John Stropes. He has performed in America and Canada, been featured on local television and radio, and can be heard on the CD compilation American Finger-Style Guitar circa 1999. His debut CD Signal was released April 2006. Matt is the Artistic Director for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music‘s annual Guitar Weekend Workshop and Interlochen College of Creative Arts‘ Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop. Matt currently performs acoustically as a soloist, in a duo with vocalist Lynda Lee and with the trio La Guitarra. As a rock guitarist, Mr. Schroeder has performed extensively throughout the midwest and beyond. Past Bands include Blackfish, Pet Engine, Steve Grimm and the Thrill Cats, and Jamie Jess, and the WAMI-award winning Barbeez. Matt is also a featured instructor on the Hal Leonard DVDs Acoustic Guitar Licks Goldmine and Rock Guitar Licks Goldmine, which were released in Spring 2011. www.matthewschroeder.net

George Lindquist, classical and baroque guitarWCM faculty member since 1972. B.A. Carthage College with a Diploma in

Classical Guitar Performance; M.M. Musicology University of Wisconsin-Madison. Studied classical guitar with James Yoghourtjian and lute/early guitar in master classes. George Lindquist has been one of the foremost teachers of classical guitar

in southern Wisconsin for more than 35 years. He has been on the faculty of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music since 1972, where he teaches classical guitar and related subjects. He also teaches classical guitar and directs guitar ensembles at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and at the U.W. Parkside in Kenosha. As a performing classical guitarist, he has been a member of several ensembles, including a classical guitar trio, a flute and guitar duo, and a guitar and harpsichord duo. He also has a degree in musicology and occasionally performs on the lute and baroque guitar. He has performed at universities, colleges, music societies, public libraries, recital halls and private venues throughout Wisconsin and Illinois and on Wisconsin Public Radio. He has also given many performances in the public schools sponsored by Young Audiences of Wisconsin. He is one of the guitarists featured on the CD Milwaukee Guitar: Strictly Solo and can be heard on recordings with the Master Singers of Milwaukee and the Festival Choir of Madison. Mr. Lindquist is a former board member of the Milwaukee Classical Guitar



Society and is past Associate Archivist of the Guitar Foundation of America.

Peter Baime, flamenco and classical guitarWCM faculty member since 1969. Mr. Baime began his studies with Nino Bernardo in the U.S. and in Spain with the legendary gypsy guitarists Diego Gastor and Paco Gastor. He began his performance career in 1965. In 1996 Mr. Baime joined the faculty at Cardinal Stritch University. In addition to teaching he has performed more than 2,500 concerts in public schools. He has scored, performed, and recorded six documentary films airing on PBS. Mr. Baime performs extensively in the U.S. and Puerto Rico as well as in Spain, Canada, Italy and Mexico. He has recordings on the Dr. Black and Narada labels. He has commissioned several contemporary and now-published works for classical guitar. In October 2000 he won an Emmy Award from the National Academy for Television Arts & Sciences for his original score in Indigenous Always.

Jason Behr, classical guitarWCM faculty member since 2009. M.M. in classical guitar performance, Peck School of the Arts, UW-Milwaukee; B.F.A., UW-Milwaukee in collaboration with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Since the age of 18, Mr. Behr has been an active teacher and performer in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. While studying under Professor Rene Izquierdo, Mr. Behr was afforded the opportunity to participate in master classes by guitarists including The Assad Brothers, Jorge Caballero, Jerome Ducharme, Marcin Dylla, Evgenij Gridiushko, William Kanengiser, The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Lorenzo Micheli, Jorge Morel, and Michael Partington, among others. In addition to teaching, Mr Behr is a member of the Milwaukee Guitar Quartet and maintains an active performance schedule around Milwaukee and abroad. In 2008, Mr. Behr was asked by composer Carlos Rivera to record Cancion,

his acclaimed solo work for classical guitar. In 2009, composer and guitarist Stepan Rak requested Mr. Behr to perform the American premiere of his new work titled Royal Suite. Paul Silbergleit, jazz guitarWCM faculty member since 1996 and a member of the Conservatory’s We Six jazz sextet. B.A., Oberlin College. An accomplished jazz composer as well as performer, Mr. Silbergleit has played clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout the area as both a leader and a sideman. He has appeared with Jack McDuff, Jon Faddis, Richie Cole, Tierney Sutton, Melvin Rhyne, Brian Lynch, David Hazeltine, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, among others. Both his 1996 debut CD Silberglicity (on which other Conservatory faculty members are featured) and his 2003 release, My New Attitude, have made it onto the jazz charts with nationwide airplay, and he can also be heard on the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. Mr. Silbergleit also teaches at Cardinal Stritch University, and is a featured instructor in Hal Leonard‘s Guitar Licks Goldmine DVD series.

Thomas Clippert, guitarWCM faculty member since 2004. Mr. Clippert is also currently a faculty member of the Merit School of Music in Chicago. He received his Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. Mr. Clippert was the recipient of Yale University’s Eliot Fisk Guitar Prize. Mr. Clippert is an active performer both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and his repertoire reflects his wide ranging musical interests.

Greg Koch, guitarBorn in Milwaukee in 1966, Koch got his earliest musical influences from his older brother and later became infatuated with



Jimi Hendrix, who remains a profound influence to this day. After studying jazz guitar for four years at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Koch won 1st Prize in the 1989 Bluesbreaker Guitar Showdown judged by legendary bluesman Buddy Guy. Shortly after, he formed Greg Koch and the Tone Controls, which became one of the more popular acts of the region. The band went on to win five Wisconsin Area Music Awards for Blues Artist of the Year, and Koch personally took in seven WAMA awards as Guitarist of the Year. Koch soon found himself as a clinician for Fender, the world’s largest and most prestigious guitar and amplifier manufacturer. Bringing together world-class chops and a humorous ability to articulate sounds and techniques with a genuine devotion to all things guitar, Koch

has developed an exceptionally effective approach to conducting guitar clinics. Greg’s relationship with music publishing giant, the Hal Leonard Corporation, has also resulted in a string of top-selling guitar method books, including Guitar Clues: Operation Pentatonic, Lead Licks and Rhythm Riffs, as well as Koch’s popular Hal Leonard instructional DVDs, two on the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan (approved by Jimmie Vaughan), one on Lynyrd Skynyrd, another celebrating revered blues stylists like Albert King, Albert Collins, Elmore James and Guitar Slim and one on his own twisted take on guitar called Guitar Gristle have revolutionized video guitar instruction with a combination of humor, effective instruction and inspiring musical performances into a package that can only be described as “edu-tainment.”

John Thulin, pianoB.M. from Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Mr. Thulin has studied with Melvin Rhyne, Tony King, and Eddie Baker. He has performed in the Milwaukee area with Manty Ellis and Berkeley Fudge. John is the music coordinator and pianist for Public Radio’s live radio program Michael Feldman’s Whad’ Ya Know? Along with Jeff Hamann, John has performed on the show with Ernestine Anderson, Von Freeman, The Memphis Horns, and many more. John has recorded three CDs under his own name, is a composer, and performs throughout the Midwest. He travels nationally with WYK sharing the stage with many local performers.

John Babbitt, bassWCM faculty member since 1994. Mr. Babbitt graduated in 1985 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Masters degree in performance on double bass. He has worked extensively throughout the Midwest as a professional bassist and educator both in classical and jazz formats. Mr. Babbitt

served as WCM faculty chair of the String Department from 1996 to 1999, and has also served as adjunct faculty at UW-Milwaukee,

UW-Stevens Point, Concordia University, Carroll College, Alverno College Community Arts Department, The String Academy at UW-Milwaukee and the Oshkosh Summer String Program.

Terry Smirl, drumsWCM faculty member since 2009. Terry Smirl is percussionist with Present Music, one of

the nation’s foremost New Music groups, and he is Principal Timpanist with both the Milwaukee Ballet and the Waukesha Symphony Orchestras. As a jazz drummer he has performed with the area’s greatest artists including Chuck Hedges, Berkley Fudge, Hattush Alexander, Melvin Rhyne, and others, as well as national artists Bobby Shew, Anne Calloway, and Jim Pugh. He’s performed at venues throughout the world, and he’s recorded with Present Music, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and others on Koss Classics, innova, Aoede, Albany Records, Changing Tone Records, Chameleon Records, and more.

Jeanyi Kim, violin Jeanyi Kim is the Associate Concertmaster (Third Chair) of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra. As an orchestral musician, the Toronto native has performed in illustrious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Barbican Centre, Salle Pleyel and the Concertgebouw. She has been a Guest Assistant Leader of the London Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev. The recipient of the Yale Bach Society Award and the Stuart Walker Memorial Scholarship, Kim holds a doctorate degree from Yale University, from which she also earned her MMA, MM, and BA degrees. Her major teachers include Erick Friedman, Kyung Yu, Berl Senofsky and Rebecca Henry. Dr. Kim has been a faculty member of the Elm City ChamberFest and the Eleazar de Carvalho Festival in Brazil. Alexander Mandl, violin Brazilian violinist and conductor, Alexander Mandl, maintains a diverse career as soloist, conductor, chamber and orchestra musician, and educator. A versatile musician, Mandl has performed worldwide at renowned halls, including Alice Tully, the Memorial of Latin America, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Carnegie Music Hall. As a soloist and orchestra musician, he has collaborated with notable conductors, such as Eleazar de Carvalho, Gunther Herbig, Claudio Santoro, Lawrence Leighton Smith, Robert Shaw, and Krzysztof Penderecki. Most recently, he has conducted and soloed with the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra, and the Paraiba Symphony

Orchestra. A dedicated and passionate chamber musician, Mandl has collaborated with eminent artists, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Jian

Wang, Humberto Lucarelli, Erick Friedman, Sidney Harth, Nai-Yuan Hu, Aldo Parisot, Frank Morelli, João Carlos Martins, Amit Peled and Todd Levy. He is a founding member of the Philomusica Quartet, Yale Piano Trio, and Quintessence Piano Quintet, which performs in the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, with live broadcast on

WFMT, Chicago. Currently, Mandl is the Concertmaster of the Kenosha Symphony and the Beloit-Janesville Symphony orchestras, Assistant Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, Conductor of the Elm City ChamberFest orchestra, Music Director/Conductor of the Lakeshore Youth Philharmonic, and guest conductor of the Paraiba Symphony in Brazil. A recipient of Andrew Carnegie Tradition Award, the Yale Alumni Award and the prestigious Ivan Galamian Award, Dr. Mandl serves on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Wisconsin Lutheran College, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Elm City ChamberFest, the MIMU International festival in Brazil and performs at the Sunflower Music Festival. In 2002, Mandl recorded for CD Baby’s Heavenly Lullabies dedicated to the orphans of 9/11, produced in New York City, and J.S. Bach’s E major concerto with the UFPB Chamber Orchestra (Brazil) under the direction of maestro Sidney Harth. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon, BFA; Yale University, MM and AD; and UW-Madison, DMA, Mandl has recently edited Leopoldo Miguez’s Violin Sonata Op. 14.



Nathan Hackett, viola Violist Nathan Hackett is a proud member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. During the 2007-08 season, he served as its Co-Assistant Principal violist. He is Principal violist of both the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra. Also very active as a chamber musician, Mr. Hackett performs with many of Milwaukee’s leading musicians in recital series for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Wisconsin Lutheran College and most recently Chamber Music Milwaukee, with University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee faculty and MSO musicians. While a student at UWM, Mr. Hackett studied viola with Jerry Horner and chamber music with members of the Fine Arts Quartet. Other influential teachers have been Peter Slowik and Burton Kaplan.

Adrien Zitoun, cello Cellist Adrien Zitoun joined the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 2001. That year, as a member of the Eusia String Quartet, he was awarded the Gold medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. In his native land of France, Mr. Zitoun studied musicology at the University of Sorbonne in Paris for one year, before being accepted into the National Superior Conservatory of Music in Lyon, where he studied cello with Yvan Chiffoleau. At this time, he also played with the Ensemble Orchestral de Mâcon and Symphony Orchestra of Lyon-Villerbanne and taught at the Privas and Brignais School of Music. In 1996, he obtained scholarships that enabled him to

continue his music studies in the United States. Here, Mr. Zitoun earned his Artist Diploma and a Masters of Music from

Indiana University, where he studied with Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Janós Starker. An active teacher, Mr. Zitoun is on the faculty at Wisconsin Lutheran College, and has a handful of dedicated private students.

Winston Choi, piano Laureate of the 2003 Honens International Piano Competition and winner of France’s 2002 Concours International de Piano 20e siècle d’Orléans, Canadian pianist Winston Choi is an inquisitive performer whose

fresh approach to standard repertory, and masterful understanding, performance and commitment to works by living composers, make him one of today’s most dynamic young concert artists. Choi has performed in recital and with orchestra across 4 continents. He has has collaborated with composers including William Bolcom, Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough, Bernard Rands, Sven-David Sandstrom, Bright Sheng, Christian Wolff, Chen Yi and John Zorn. Choi’s debut CD, the complete piano works of Elliott Carter (l’Empreinte Digitale in France) was given 5 stars by BBC Music Magazine: “…sheer élan and pianistic devilment…” He has also recorded 2 CDs of the piano music of Jacques Lenot for the Intrada label, having won the Grand Prix du Disque from l’Académie Charles Cros for Volume I. He can also be heard on the Albany, Arktos, Naxos, QuadroFrame and Southport Records labels. Choi is Assistant Professor and Head of Piano at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts.
