Love is in the air this February in and around Wayne. We are back after a long month of regrouping from the holidays and kicking off the New Year. I personally find January to be a month where I am getting my ducks in a row and thinking about my resolutions, but not fully committing to them. OnceFebruary comes around my head is clear, my goals are lined up and I’m newly refreshed for what the New Year will bring. It is also a month to remind oneself to love others more fully and gently. These days St. Valentine’s Day may be overlooked by many as a “Hallmark Holiday.” But try to always keep the spirit of the holiday in your heart and spread that love as much as possible throughout the year.

On another note I’m thrilled to announce the exciting news that Wayne Magazine will be presenting its first music festival in downtown Wayne on Saturday, June 13th! In the coming months we’ll be searching for an eclectic mix of bands to perform throughout the afternoon and evening. We are open to having all genres of music at this festival and implore anyone to contact me personally to discuss further details. I will have more information about the event on the website in the coming months. This festival is for all of you and for the town of Wayne. I can assure you that Wayne Magazine will be putting on one heck of a show for everyone to enjoy.

As always, please email me your thoughts, ideas and/or suggestions as we move ahead. I’m continuously searching for fresh ideas for the publication that would directly pertain to you, the reader. In 2015 I would like to incorporate more involvement from the residents of Wayne through our newFacebook page: Wayne Magazine - Wayne, PA. Come on over and visit us sometime soon. I look forward to serving you with a quality magazine each and every month that is solely dedicated to the Wayne community. Enjoy the issue!

Sincerely,

Meet Matt, our 10-year old Bassett-Beagle mix. We adopted Matt when he was around five years old from Francisvale Home For Small Animals – a no-kill shelter

in Wayne. He was shipped up from West Virginia, as Francisvale has connections with many shelters that can’t keep dogs for long. Upon arriving at Francisvale, what struck us immediately about Matt was how calm he was compared to many of the other dogs that tended to bark a bit more as we passed by them in their outdoor pens. When we asked to meet with him privately, he was so gentle and personable from the get-go. I later realized that he was checking us out as much as we were checking him out. Being a hound, he is driven by his nose and he wanted to get as much information about us as he possibly could in the 20 minutes we were together!

Once we decided that he was the dog for us, we prepared for the transition to our home. What we realized within a few minutes after Matt was in our home was that he probably hadnever been in a house before. He didn’t know how to negotiate the stairs; he jumped when thephone rang; he tried to perch on the window sills so he could see outside – this was actuallyvery funny to see as he is a pretty good sized dog, at around 45lbs, and he was trying to sit onthe window sill like a 10lb cat. Speaking of cats, he looked at our cats as if they were squirrelsand it was a very long process to have him understand our connection with our cats as pets too. Five years later Matt is very comfortable in his “forever” home. He now loves the cats, and maybe loves my daughter’s guinea pigs a little too much.

His howl is one of my most favorite things about him. If Matt sends a squirrel up a tree, he will at times let loose a few good hound-dog howls. You can never be in a rush to take him for a walk as it is a full sensory experience for Matt, and I have to give him that time to get his nose “work” in. It warms my heart to think about how much love one dog can bring into so many people’s lives. We are lucky to have Matt in our family.

chloe johnston:AN EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME

by Laurie Wightman

Bonjour de Paris! Imagine strolling down the beautiful streets of Paris being swept away to the best hidden boutiques and vintage markets, while meeting with top designers

that expose you to the most unique Parisian treasures that can’t be discovered anywhere else in the world. There are many experiences that can be found in Paris, but one of the most exclusive excursions that one may partake in is guided by the Devon-based company and founder, Chloe Johnston. Every Chloe Johnston tour, whether it be in Paris or NYC, provides flawless service to meet the individual needs of each guest. The dedicated team will offer elite access to a world of luxury for each client to experience through fashion, art, cuisine and so much more.

The concept of Chloe Johnston, also referred to as CJ Tours, was conceived while Chloe was in graduate school in NYC. “It was an idea that turned into a capstone project, discussed over wine with my mother prior to me making my final presentation at grad school. The idea really came to life at that dinner with her,” commented Chloe. “I remember I was so passionate about executing the idea. My mother saw and felt that passion and said to hold my nose and jump in, so I did.” Between Chloe’s training on the business side of things and her love of clothing, history, art and fashion she has been able to turn herdream into a successful business venture. With the help of her mother, Mary Anne Hawrylak, who has had longtime experience and passion in business, fashion and interior design, the mother-daughter duo have created an energy that is palpable and contagious.

WayneMagazine.com | February 2015 15

Chloe Johnston offers a wide selection of tours both extended and half-day experiences in both Paris and NYC. Whether it be a getaway to Paris on a 50th birthday celebration, a mother-daughter trip, a bride-to-be tour, or off to NYC to explore private designer showrooms and secret vintage boutiques, each tour is uniquely personalized to individual preferences, ensuring an authentic experience for every client. “Some of the Paris designers are people you could not meet here in the states or labels that are only available in Europe,” said Chloe. “In NYC, we take you to the showrooms as well as boutiques of designers you either wouldn’t find on your own as they are available by appointment only, or those that you would only stumble upon if you had all the time in the world to look.” Through a detailed questionnaire a consultant will work with each client to

better understand their individual interests as to where they want to go and what they

would like to accomplish on a personalized tour. Some clients are unable to get to either

city but still want the virtual experience. CJ Tours will discuss what exactly it is that the client

is looking for and source it out for a nominal fee.

A “monthly look” is provided in the CJ shop online at ChloeJohnston.com where a head to toe display is available for purchase. Additionally, there is a wide variety of merchandise to choose from that are one-of-a-kind pieces from high-end designers and vintages shops. “CJ Shop offers really special, personal pieces from our designers,” stated Chloe. “Women are unique. They evolve. They change. They grow. We want to offer something truly exceptional that is going to last a lifetime.” The shop is a virtual havenfor fashionistas looking to remain current. Two other wonderful services that Chloe Johnston offers are school tours for students interested in the fashion industry, and visual merchandising for retailers. Both very beneficial assets to those interested.

Chloe has met with several creative and wonderful designers in Paris, many of whom have become her good friends. When she sends clients to shops, they have a full experience with designers that she knows personally and has relationships with. A rare experience that most shoppers don’t have access to normally. “I have gotten to know my designers own history in the world of design and fashion, as well as a wealth of information and creative energy that they share. This has opened up doors, ideas and crystalized my whole view on style,” said Chloe. She travels five to six times a year to Paris, and with each occasion she meets someone new that opens her up to shift the lens of

her style perspective ever so slightly. “Will I ever express my style in the same way a Parisian woman might? Perhaps not, I am not Parisian. But the way I feel when I find a vintage piece with history that speaks to me, and then see it later incorporated into my style, that becomes the “weapon” that Saint Laurent spoke of,” concluded Chloe. “It makes me feel better, work harder and generally telegraph that je ne sais quoi that is so elusive yet so effective for a woman. Finding, defining and expressing your style can be a challenge. However, having your style communicate your mood, your message, you before you even speak, for me just feels right in so many ways.”

Red Velvet Whoopie Pies• 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup vegetable oil• 1 cup sugar • 1 large egg• 3 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 teas. vanilla • 1/2 teas. baking soda • 1 teas. distilled white vinegar• 1/2 teas. salt • 2/3 cup buttermilk• 1/2 stick unsalted butter, softened • 2 tbsp. red food coloring

Filling:

• 8 ounces cream cheese, softened • 1 teas. fresh lemon juice• 2 cups confectioners’ sugar • 1/2 teas. vanilla• 1/2 stick unsalted butter, softened • 1/8 teas. salt

Cake Rounds:1. Preheat oven to 350°F with racks in upper and lower third. Line two baking sheets with

parchment paper. 2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. 3. Beat butter, oil, and sugar with an electric mixer until combined well, about 2 minutes.

Beat in egg, vanilla, and vinegar. 4. Reduce speed to low and mix in flour and buttermilk slowly, beginning and ending with

the flour until combined. 5. Add the red food coloring and mix on low speed until fully combined. 6. Roll out balls of batter to equal 2 tablespoons each. Separate them 2 inches apart on a

lined baking sheet and bake 8 to 10 minutes until rounds are puffed and set.

Filling:1. Beat together cream cheese, butter, lemon juice, vanilla, salt, and sugar until creamy,

1 to 2 minutes. 2. Spread about 2 tablespoons of filling on flat-side of half the rounds; top with remaining

rounds, flat side down, to form whoopie pies.

Red Beet Risotto• 3/4 pound beets (1 small bunch of 3 to 4)• 1 bunch beet greens, stemmed and washed • 6 to 7 cups chicken or vegetable stock, as needed• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion• 1-1/2 cups arborio rice• 2 garlic cloves• 1/2 cup dry white wine• salt• freshly ground pepper• 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated• 2 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

1. Roast beets in a preheated oven at 400°. Wrap the beets in aluminum foil and place on a baking sheet. Roast for about 20 minutes, until the beets are tender. Remove from oven and allow to cool, then peel and dice the beets.

2. Rinse the greens from the beets and set aside.3. Place the stock in a medium sauce pan and bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.4. In a large saute pan, heat the oil over medium. Add the onion and stir while cooking until it’s

transparent, about 5 minutes. Add the rice and the garlic and stir while cooking until the rice is separate and starting to crackle, about 3 minutes.

5. Stir in the wine and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. When the wine has just about evaporated, add in 1 ladleful of stock just to cover the rice. Cook, stirring occasionally until the stock is nearly absorbed, then add another ladleful. Continue to stir often adding more stock when the rice is dry, for about 10 minutes.

6. Stir in the diced beets. Add more stock and continue cooking as before, for another 10-15 minutes, adding stock when the rice is dry. The rice should be tender and soft in the middle. When it has reached the correct consistency, season with salt and pepper. Add parmesan cheese and the greens on top. The rice should be creamy, if it is not, add another 1/2 cup of stock.

7. For extra garnish, set aside a red or yellow beet after roasting. Slice the beat lengthwise a few times. Then using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out the shapes from each piece and add to the top of the dish.

chapter 2:A WOMEN’S GUIDE TO

EMPOWER–SUPPORT–CONNECT

Photos by Brenda Carpenter at Academy of Notre Dame, Kelly Clarke’s alma mater

by Laurie Wightman

Meet Kelly Clarke, a local to the community now bringing her innovative business venture to the women of Wayne and beyond. The name of her organization is

CHAPTER 2. The concept is a women to women strategic plan for life’s next phase of personal growth, peace of mind and freedom to define who you want to become. “We will design a Life Blueprint and link women to a personally cultivated network of highly regarded professionals in five concentrated areas,” said Kelly. “Those five areas are: Health & Wellness, Financial Planning, Legal Counsel, Social Connection and Career Branding.” After 20 years of building and turning around non-profit organizations, Kelly experienced complete empowerment through helping other women reach their full potential and guiding them to be the best they can be. “Everyone wants to have an impact on the life of someone else,” commented Kelly. “I come from a strength based perspective as a social worker and psychotherapist. I was able to see people come together from various walks of life and feel valued. I want to bring that feeling to women every day that may be in a transitional phase in their lives.”

In 2007 Kelly was a key leader in building a grassroots non-profit, Cradles to Crayons. She dealt with several women who were searching for a meaningful project to focus their efforts on while their children were at school. She learned along the way how many women were looking for a productive way to spend their down time that would offer fulfillment in their personal lives. Today, Kelly has come up with a sustainable business model for women going through various life stages such as redefining their career, going through a divorce, empty nester or simply rediscovering a new path for their lives.

CHAPTER 2 is committed to empower, support and connect women to the next chapter in their life that is full of potential and meaning. “I simply give women the tools and support to be successful and find meaning in their life. They do the work and I’ll help them get there,” stated Kelly. Live your most authentic life today through discovering your passion and purpose with CHAPTER 2.
