To put things in perspective, theCivil War was in its secondbloody year when the first

Wayne County Fair was organized. And though time has wrought

inevitable changes, the fair, with itsmany links to our agricultural past, always delivers on its promise of fam-ily-friendly entertainment at reason-able prices.

“It never gets old,” said longtimeFair President Roger Dirlam, who alsoheads up the sponsoring organiza-tion, the Wayne County CooperativeAgricultural Society.

Dirlam, his fellow board membersand more than 200 volunteers havespent months preparing for the152nd edition, which begins nextFriday, August 1, and runs throughSaturday, August 9.

The fair is the only place to experi-ence traditional, but rarely seenevents such as horse and truck andtractor pulls, as well as the ever pop-ular Demolition Derby (Friday,August 1 at 7:30 p.m.)

Though the Small Stage will show-case a range of musical talents andstyles, country music remains the tra-ditional big ticket item at theGrandstand. Highlighting this year’sfair is the concert on Monday, August4 with country music stars CraigCampbell and special guest EricPaslay.

“It is no secret that in recent yearsthe fair’s concert venues have provento be the launching point for some ofcountry music’s rising stars such asJustin Moore and Jake Owens,” stateda press release. “This year will be nodifferent. With hit singles under theirbelts such as ‘Keep Them KissesComin’ and ‘Outta My Head’ by CraigCampbell and ‘Friday Nights’ and‘Song about a Girl’ by Eric Paslay, these two artists are sure to put on ashow like you’ve never seen before atthe WCF. Not one, but two popularartists playing songs and interactingwith the crowd for one night only.”

Tickets are on sale now via the web-site.

Fairgoers will also have to pay extrafor another perennial Grandstandfavorite: the world-famous KSRMonster Truck Show, on two nights:Thursday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m. andSaturday, August 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday’s show will feature Jim

Kramer coming back to drive the newOdyssey battery-operated Big Foot inan epic race with local favorite XPD,which is powered by diesel. Saturdaywill be a “Freestyle” show featuringMegasaurus.

For more about the monster trucks, visit www.ksr-motorsports.com.

Animals are a large part of the fair,

especially livestock judging and sales.A variety of other farm and non-farmanimals are exhibited for closeinspection and interaction.

On the Midway, there will be ridesand foods galore, as well as merchan-dise. Rides go from the gentle to thethrilling, and best of all, they are freewith paid admission.

Dirlam said the fairgrounds willhave additional parking, and a newthree-lane bridge at the entryway onRoute 191 will make it easier toegress.

As usual, a bevy of volunteers willdirect vehicles to the available slotsand tractor-pulled hay wagons willshuttle people to the gate.

“Where can you go and for $8 ridethe rides from noon to 11 p.m.? It’s aheck of a bang for your buck!” con-cluded Dirlam.

Joseph B. Park, 1896-1970, has beenselected as the 2014

winner of the award“People Who Make aDifference in WayneCounty Agriculture”, thefirst time the WayneCounty HistoricalSociety has given theaward posthumously.

The J. B. Park FarmMuseum, located at theWayne County fair-grounds, was namedafter Park and is visited by thou-sands each year during fair week.Park’s family will receive this presti-gious award at the opening of theWayne County Fair on Friday, August1at 6:30 p.m. on the small stage ofthe Farm Museum. All are welcome. The J. B. Park Farm Museum wel-comes visitors during the WayneCounty fair from noon to 8 PM.

Park’s life work was in Wayne

County agriculture asa teacher and countyagriculture supervi-sor, the first personto hold that positionin the county. One ofthe requirements ofthat position was tovisit the students attheir farms, checkingtheir projects such aschickens, cows andgardens. In theprocess, he becameacquainted with

hundreds of farm parents. As theparents acquired the latest in farm-ing implements, they needed to dis-card the old. Park began collectingthese discarded farm tools andmachines and stored them in hishouse. Thus began the process thatwould later result in the FarmMuseum.

Park retired in 1956, allowing timeto pursue volunteer activities. He

had been a board member of the FairAssociation for many years and wasa founding member of the WayneCounty Historical Society. Workingthrough both organizations, helaunched his long time dream ofhaving a Farm Museum, a place toshowcase farm implements from thefarmers of Wayne County. The rest ishistory!

Wayne County honors the memoryof Joseph B. Park, who lived andworked among the county farmers. He had the vision of having a placewhere future generations could viewand learn about Wayne County’sfarming history. His vision was real-ized during his lifetime.

Country singer-songwriter CraigCampbell has released twoCDs: his debut, “Craig

Campbell” in 2011 and sophomorealbum “Never Regret” in 2013. Withan upbringing centered aroundrespect in rural Georgia, Campbellcredits his deep country roots andwork ethic with the success of hismusic including hit singles “Fish,”“Outta My Head” and “Keep ThemKisses Comin.”

Frequently compared to Countryartist Alan Jackson, Campbell hasbeen making his stamp on the coun-try music scene. Campbell, a formerkeyboardist for both Luke Bryan andTracy Byrd, has been using his turn asthe star of the show to step out of hiscomfort zone stepping away from hisinstruments to work the stage solo allout of respect for his fans.

“That’s what the audience wants tosee, so I challenged myself, and I’mgetting more comfortable with it,”Campbell said. “It’s easier to do with ahit song that everybody’s raising cainto.”

The country star, also a husbandand father of two young girls, has noplans on slowing down anytimesoon.

“I’ve done some amazing things fora new artist, but I can’t slow down,”he states, “I’ve got to keep full steamahead.”

Campbell will be joined by countryartist Eric Paslay whose songwritingcredits include Jake Owen’s hit song“Barefoot Blue Jean Night” andDonnie and Marie Osmond’s “TheGood Life.” Paslay’s self-titled debutalbum, just released this year, hasspawned two hit singles “FridayNight” and “Song About a Girl.”

Campbell will be performing live at

the Wayne County Fair during its andFroggy 101’s third annual Grandstandcountry concert, co-sponsored byGrimm Construction, Inc. andPioneer Construction Company, Inc.,on Monday August 4 at 7:30 p.m.

The gift of life for Bryce

Neversink youth, 8, gets heart transplant

BY JEANNE SAGER

NEVERSINK — The Tues-

day night when life changed

for the Rogerson family was

just like any other.

With a planned two-hour

delay for the Tri-Valley

School District the next day,

8-year-old Bryce and 5-year-

old Bryan had been given a

pass to stay up late and watch

a movie together. Sixteen-

year-old Emily was doing

what teenagers do on a

school night. Dad Brian was

on a hunting trip in Alabama,

so mom Nicole was snuggling

in bed, watching TV by her-

self. And then the phone rang.

It was a pediatric nurse

familiar with little Bryce’s

congenital heart condition.

After nearly three years on

the transplant list, there was

a heart waiting for Bryce.

“I said ‘Are you kidding

me?’ ” Nicole recalls. “I was

literally skipping up and

down the hallway!”

It was a call the Rogersons

weren’t sure would ever

come. Bryce was diagnosed

with hypoplastic left heart

syndrome (HLHS) before he

was even born, after a routine

ultrasound at 18 weeks

picked up an anomaly.

HLHS – a syndrome in which

the left side of a child's heart

was underdeveloped – is one

of the three most common

heart issues a child can be

born with, but it can be fatal

if left untreated.

To increase the Bryce’s

chances, Nicole underwent

in utero surgery at just 26

weeks pregnant to open up a

hole in his heart to allow

blood to flow properly and

help him develop in the

womb. Ten days after he was

born in February 2005, Bryce

underwent his first open

heart surgery. At 8 months, he

had another, and in October

of 2008, a third open heart

surgery.

But in 2010 came a devas-

tating diagnosis. Bryce had

developed plastic bronchitis,

a condition of the lungs most

common in cystic fibrosis

patients. Rubbery chunks of

mucus had begun develop-

ing in his lungs, making him

struggle to breathe. Although

the issue presents itself in the

lungs, doctors put the blame

on his heart, which pumps

oxygenated blood to the

lungs. By 2011, doctors told the

Rogersons their best choice

would be to put Bryce on the

transplant list – for a heart. A

new heart, they told them,

would take pressure off the

lungs and hopefully allow

them to heal themselves.

On March 25, 2011, Bryce

was added to the transplant

list with what’s known as 1B

status, the second from the

top. At the time, doctors told

the Rogersons that listing

him at 1A – the highest and

most needy status – would

require Bryce to wait in a hos-

pital for a heart to be found.

But with Bryce able to take

his medication at home, the

Rogersons opted to keep him

in Neversink, to allow him to

continue attending school

and be with his family.

They were told it would

take six months to a year to

find him a heart.

On June 25, 2013, more

than two years later, his heart

hadn’t come. The Rogersons

moved their son up to 1A sta-

tus, the top of the transplant

waiting list.

At that time, doctors had

changed their mind and said

Bryce could stay home and

wait. They told the Rogersons

it would probably be a month

or two until a heart was

found. It was almost seven months

until the call came.

That was January 14, the

night Nicole called a friend to

watch Bryan and packed her

other two kids into the car to

fly over the roads to Morgan

Stanley Children’s Hospital at

Columbia Presbyterian in

New York City. Bryce was cry-

ing, Nicole recalls, but his

biggest worry was “how am I

going to turn in my home-

work?” “I told him your teacher

isn’t going to worry about

your writing assignment.”

Husband Brian had just

arrived in Alabama for his

hunting trip and couldn’t find

a flight north, so he rented a

car in Montgomery and

drove straight through the

night to Atlanta, Georgia, for

the earliest flight to

LaGuardia, a 6 a.m. that he

hoped would get him there in

time to see his little boy

before he went into surgery.

Brian’s plane left late, but

the fates aligned – because of
