Carving pumpkins into jack- o'-lanterns can be traced back centuries to Ireland and a story about "Stingy Jack." The tale involves Jack outwitting the Devil twice, the second time free- ing the Devil from a prank in exchange for the promise that he would not claim Jack's soul should Jack die. When Jack did die, God did not want the unsa- vory character in heaven, but the Devil could not claim Jack for hell. Therefore, Jack was relegat- ed to roam the planet indefinite- ly with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put that coal into a carved-out turnip. His ghostly figure was referred to as "Jack of the Lantern." Later on it was shortened to "Jack O'Lantern." When Irish immi- grants arrived in North America, turnips weren't plentiful, so jack- o'-lanterns were instead carved into pumpkins. Today, many people carve jack-o'-lanterns, with some fea- turing just smiling or grimacing faces while others are far more artistic creations. These tips can help anyone carve a pumpkin. • Begin with a fresh pumpkin. Look for a pumpkin with a green stem. If the pumpkin has been sitting around for too long or has been handled too much, the stem can get brittle and/or fall off. A thick, fresh pumpkin is best for carving. • Plan your ideas. Draw a plan for your pumpkin before you make your first cut. Then transfer that design to the pumpkin with pen or a thin marker. Pumpkin- carving kits come with designs that can be "traced" by poking small holes to create the outline of the design. • Don't cut all the way through. Many professional pumpkin artists do not actually cut clear through the flesh of the pumpkin. They carve and shave off layers of the outer rind until it becomes more translucent. The level of transparency can be adjusted based on how much skin is removed and as a way to add texture and shadowing. The more air that is allowed to penetrate the pumpkin, the faster it will start to degrade. • Delay carving until the last minute. Wait until the day before Halloween to begin carving. Pumpkins are a perishable item, and they'll begin to rot as soon as you begin carving. Spritzing them with water can help them stay fresh, but there's no turning back the clock once the first cut is made. • Cut a hole in the back. According to Brooklyn-based Maniac Pumpkin Carvers, cutting off the top of the pumpkin can affect its structural integrity and cause it to rot faster. Instead, cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin and use an electric light to illu- minate it. LEDs are adviseable because they don't generate much heat, which can cook and rot the pumpkin from the inside out. With some creativity and a lit- tle know-how, anyone can create an eye-catching jack-o'-lantern. Halloween pumpkin-carving pointers

Transforming pumpkins intocleverly carved creations is aHalloween tradition. EachOctober, glowing pumpkins takeup residence near doorsteps andporches, adding to the magicalambiance of the season. Youngand old spend time designingtheir themes and then takingknife to pumpkin to achieve thedesired effects.

Carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns can be traced backcenturies to Ireland and a storyabout "Stingy Jack." The taleinvolves Jack outwitting theDevil twice, the second time free-ing the Devil from a prank inexchange for the promise that hewould not claim Jack's soulshould Jack die. When Jack diddie, God did not want the unsa-vory character in heaven, but theDevil could not claim Jack forhell. Therefore, Jack was relegat-ed to roam the planet indefinite-ly with only a burning coal tolight his way. Jack put that coalinto a carved-out turnip. The average age of a personal vehi-cle on the road today is more than 11years, according to recent news reports. In tough economic times, it's natural torein in spending. But the experts at thenonprofit National Institute forAutomotive Service Excellence (ASE)warn that putting off routine automaintenance or ignoring service inter-vals is false economy. Small issues canmorph into more expensive repairs. Forexample, failure to replace worn brakepads or a faulty oxygen sensor -- bothrelatively easy services for qualifiedauto technicians -- can result in expen-sive brake rotor service or costlyreplacement of the vehicle's catalyticconverter.

Frequently neglected items includeoil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission service, according toASE-certified auto technicians.

Besides, a well-maintained vehiclegets better gasoline mileage, pollutesless, is safer to operate, and lasts longerthan one that's neglected, notes ASE.

To help consumers choose a repairshop that fits their needs, ASE offersthe following checklist:

• Look for a neat, well-organizedfacility, with vehicles in the parking lotequal in value to your own and modernequipment in the service bays.

• Look for a courteous staff, with a

service consultant willing to answer allof your questions.

• Look for policies regarding esti-mated repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and acceptable methods ofpayment.

• Ask if the repair facility special-izes or if it usually handles your type ofrepair work.

• Look for signs of professionalismin the customer service area, such ascivic, community, or customer serviceawards.

• Look for evidence of qualifiedtechnicians: trade school diplomas, cer-tificates of advanced course work, andcertification by ASE.

• Look for the ASE sign or logo; itmeans the shop employs nationally cer-tified technicians.

The National Institute forAutomotive Service Excellence (ASE)was founded in 1972 as a non-profit,independent organization dedicated toimproving the quality of automotiveservice and repair through the volun-tary testing and certification of auto-motive technicians.

ASE-certified technicians wear blueand white ASE shoulder insignia andcarry credentials listing their exactareas of certification. Their employersoften display the blue and white ASEsign. Visit www.ase.com for seasonalcar care advice and more.

Motorists routinely check their tiresfor proper inflation, top off engine fluidlevels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand theimportance of keeping engine air filtersclean.

Engine air filters are a relatively inex-pensive vehicle part, but they perform avery important job. For every gallon ofgas a car burns, it uses the equivalent of12,000 gallons of air, and that air mustbe filtered to help keep an engine clean.

Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debristhat may get sucked up past the airintake of the vehicle's grill and into theengine itself. Without the air filter, thosecontaminants may compromise the

engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes toodirty and is not changed regularly, theengine is starved of air.

Clean air filters allow just the rightratio of air to fuel to enable the engineto function properly. Engines need ade-quate air for the combustion process totake place. Without the proper combus-tion levels, vehicles cannot perform prop-erly or efficiently and the engine mayburn more gas or get fewer miles to thegallon. A dirty filter also can rob anengine of power. Drivers may notice slug-gish acceleration.

Air filters also can get so dirty thatthe engine stalls completely. But such aproblem only develops after considerableneglect.

Air filters may not need to bereplaced at each and every oil changeservice call. Many technicians advisereplacing the filter every 8,000 miles. However, drivers who live in particularlydry and dusty regions may need toreplace filters more frequently.

Mechanics can often detect when anair filter needs to be replaced. If he orshe notices the air filter is particularlydirty, then it's probably time to replaceit. Replacing the filter is a relativelyinexpensive repair for the amount of per-formance and peace of mind a new filterprovides.

Why a clean air filter is important

Make your vehicle less vulnerable to theft Vehicle theft is something few peo-

ple imagine happening to them. Until itdoes. While many motorists may thinktechnology has done wonders to curbvehicle theft, the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration notesthat a motor vehicle is stolen every 46seconds in the United States.

Auto theft is sometimes mistaken asa victimless crime. After all, insuredmotorists are typically reimbursed forstolen vehicles, and drivers whose carsare returned after being stolen can sim-ply submit a claim to have any damagespaid for by their insurers. But this char-acterization of auto theft is untrue, asall motorists, whether their car's beenstolen or not, pay for auto theft. TheInsurance Bureau of Canada notes thateach year auto theft costs Canadiansroughly $1 billion. That figure includesthe $542 million insurers pay to fix orreplace stolen vehicles each year. Thosecosts are ultimately passed on to cus-tomers, who then indirectly pay for theactions of car thieves.

Curbing auto theft is not necessari-ly the job of drivers, but there arethings motorists can do to reduce thelikelihood that their car will be stolenby opportunistic thieves.

• Avoid keyless ignition systems.Drivers who live in areas that are vul-

nerable to auto theft may want thepeace of mind that comes with tradi-tional keyed ignition systems instead ofthe more modern and flashy keylessignition systems. While vehicles withkeyed ignition systems are stolen everyday, some thieves may find it easier andquicker to steal cars or trucks with key-less ignition systems. Thieves can copykeys used in traditional ignition sys-tems, but that process may requireaccess to the original key and tends totake longer than it takes for thieves toreprogram keyless ignition systemsonce they're inside a car.Reprogramming devices are not legal, but they are available and can be usedto shut off automobile alarm systems ina matter of seconds.

• Lock your vehicle at all times. Oneof the simplest ways to protect a vehi-cle from prospective thieves is toalways lock the windows and doors, even when you're inside the vehicle.Auto thieves like things to go quicklyand smoothly, and locked doors androlled up windows only complicatethings for thieves. Get in the habit oflocking the vehicle when you're driv-ing, as unlocked doors make it easierfor carjackers to surprise unsuspectingmotorists.See ‘AUTO THEFT’ PAGE 8

The Joan and Melita Pick Charitable Trust has des-ignated a grant for $750,000 to go to St. Ann Centerfor Intergenerational Care. The grant will fund thecompletion of a new overnight respite care wing at theCenter’s Bucyrus Campus which opened in September2015 at 2450 W. North Avenue.

The grant will meet a critical need for respite carein Milwaukee’s near north side community, said Sr.Edna Lonergan, president of St. Ann Center, for whomthe new respite center will be named. “People who arecaring for an elderly parent or an adult with disabili-ties at home have so many demands on their time—

between their jobs and other family obligations. Ourrespite center will provide a safe, comfortable, wel-coming place where their loved ones can stay for anight, a weekend or up to 21 days.”

The 10,000-square-foot respite center will includenine individual bedrooms, a bathing area with acces-sible tubs, a great room, laundry room and kitchen. Also in the plan is a gathering room to be used forclient entertainment. The center will accommodatethe frail elderly, people with Alzheimer’s disease andother forms of dementia, and adults of all ages withsevere physical or developmental disabilities.

St. Ann Center, which has drawn internationalattention for its model, provides child and adult daycare—and a host of other services for families—underone roof. The Bucyrus Campus replicates the servicesprovided for 17 years at the center’s Stein Campus onMilwaukee’s south side.

About $3 million remains in the capital campaignto complete the $21 million St. Ann Center BucyrusCampus. That amount will cover construction of astate-of-the-art Alzheimer’s and dementia unit, twochildcare classrooms, an indoor pool, 350-seat bandshell and a safe, lighted walkway.

• Park smart. Some motorists like topark far away so their vehicles are notat risk of being dinged or scratched byinattentive drivers and passengers get-ting into and out of nearby vehicles.Others may simply not have thepatience to find parking spots in well-lit areas close to home or storefronts. But thieves may target vehicles parkednowhere near foot or automobile traf-fic. Always park in parking garages orother well-lit areas, which deter thievesfrom breaking in and driving away with

your vehicle.• Etch the VIN onto your windows.

Car thieves are not in the auto theftbusiness so they can build a fleet ofstolen cars. Upon stealing a car, manycar thieves head right for a chop shop, which is a place where stolen cars aredisassembled and then sold for parts.By etching the VIN, or vehicle identifi-cation number, of your car or truck onyour vehicle's windshield or windows, you may be making your car less attrac-tive to prospective thieves and thechop shops they do business with.

Make your vehicle less vulnerable to theft From Page 5
