    Art/Watercolor Foundations: Drawing with a Brush -- Week 1

Objective: Practices in basic art foundations; design principles and elements; art

terminology; the watercolor brush and its paint, brushstrokes and effects,

emphasis on BRUSH holding and strokes

Teacher Instruction: Design Principles and Elements

Line---Development of an idea to be expressed with various line forms, thickness

and movements; contour study of precise line placement; creation of a simple

composition which demonstrates an arrangement of overlapping, moving,

opaque or transparent shapes using collage materials. Design enhanced with

    texture.

Texture---Visual representation of surface textures; imaginative linear designs of

created texturals for enhancement of specific areas and details.

Shape---Naturalistic, free form, geometric, and abstract variations; creation of a

simple composition with overlapping, opaque or transparent shapes composed of

    collage materials; texture enhancement.

Repetition---shape duplication in the design area; realistic or abstract forms.

Positive/Negative Design---Creating new, inventive shapes by single, double and

triple cutting a large curved, angular or combination lines on an axis. Free,

creative design contrasting preplanned ideas and constructions.

Objective: How we see color; differences between light and pigment; color

classifications and watercolor mixtures and applications, painting basics with

    regard toforeground, background,emphasis, and space

Primary hues---Used to mix secondary, intermediate, complementary andanalogous mixes.

Tints---Raising intensity of a hue by adding white or water

Shades---Lowering intensity by adding black or complementary color

Neutral Hues---Skill practice with hues + theirs complement

Water Color Washes---Loose and free (Making Marks); Flat Wash; Gradated

    Wash; Variegated Wash

    Painting skill practices -- Brush variations and wooden stick texture painting;

    broad stroke, pointillism, color blending.

Class Practice -- Correct order of painting, painting over a sketch; high to low

    values.

    Teacher Instruction: The Color Doughnut:

Class will paint a doughnut-shaped Color Wheel. They will produce a circle of

color by putting a blob of each of the primaries in the center of a piece of paper

and, using the point of the brush, mix them to produce the secondary colors.

Using a larger brush to add water at the edge of the doughnut and encourage the

colors to gradate out to lighter tints.

Summary Design : A large painting to show competence with 3 different painting

techniques, washes, color values, and surface textural brushstrokes.

Teacher will assist participants, at all levels of skill and experience, to

develop observational and interpretive methods in painting. Students

will explore various processes of seeing. This class will also aim to

develop students skills in the use of different techniques, and to

develop their capacity to understand and control the watercolor

medium. This class is recommended for those wanting a broad

introduction to the art making process through watercolor.
