PLEASE BE SAFEIt is really important that you take

some time to review these safety

pointers. You don't know what

could be in the waste, so you

should always take the following

precautions:

The activity must be carried out

in a sheltered, level area.

Make sure there is a teacher or

other adult present during the

entire activity.

Enclosed shoes must be worn

during the entire activity.

Ensure that you wear gloves

during the entire activity.

Don't try to lift heavy bags or bin

by yourself, always ask for help

from the teacher.

Keep all waste on the tarpaulins.

Always work from the edges and

use a rake or broom to move

waste within reach.

Don't step in, on or over the

waste.

How to conduct a waste auditStep One - Collect the wasteTo get an idea of your school, organisation or community group’s waste profile, you will need to collect one day's worth of waste.

Waste should labelled and kept as separate samples according to location (eg. office, kitchen, outdoor) and waste stream (eg. Landfill, Recycling, Organics).

Step Two - Sort the wasteChoose a waste sample and pour the contents onto a tarp. Using the tongs and tubs provided, sort the contents into the appropriate categories:-RECYCLING: bottles, cans & cartons-RECYCLING: clean paper and cardboard-ORGANICS: food & dirty paper-RUBBISH: all other items*

* please note: some items may be recyclable, but not through your Council recycling bin (eg. plastic bags can be recycled through the RedGroup bins found at participating supermarkets) – you may use your discretion in the classification of such items.

Step Three - Measuring and recordingAfter you have sorted out all the waste, weigh each category using the provided scale and record the weights in the Measuring and Recording Table.

Repeat the sorting, measuring and recording process for all your waste samples.

Add up all the Bottles, Cans & Cartons from each of the locations you have sorted and record it under Bottles, Cans & Cartons in the Grand Total box. Repeat for Rubbish, Clean Paper & Cardboard and Dirty Paper & Food Scraps. Finally, add up all the weights in the Grand Total box for the total amount of waste you have sorted.

Step Four - Analysis and reportingFollow the instructions on the provided worksheet to calculate your waste profile. Some things to consider: What is the most common type of waste in each location? What items are currently being sent to landfill, which have the

potential to be recovered by recycling or composting? If there were recycling bins available, were there any contaminates

(wrong materials) in the bin? What are some of the problems which stop correct recycling/waste

management?

Step Five - TAKE ACTION!What strategies could be used to reduce your waste generation & improve your recycling rates? Develop an action plan, assign responsibilities and take action!

Instructions and worksheets have been adapted from the SITA School Waste & Recycling Audit Guidelineshttp://www.sita.com.au/media/general/Schools_Audit_8pp_web.pdf
