Kickoff is 6:00 p.m. and the game will air live on ESPN2. While weekday games (and even those on Friday) are not terribly unusual (the Huskies will play three non-Saturday games and two on Friday this year), the UW playing two games in a span of less than a week is unprecedented in modern history. The last time that Washington played two games in a span of six or fewer days, as they will this Friday, was in 1944, when the UW played USC in a game in Fresno, Calif., on a Monday (Oct. 23) and then Cal the following Saturday in Berkeley. After the Cal game, the Huskies wrap up their home season Nov. 10 vs. Utah before facing Colorado (Nov. 17) and WSU (Nov. 23) on the road to end the regular season. QUICK SNAPS: According to the NCAA, the UW has played the second-toughest schedule in the nation to date ... the UW’s first eight opponents are 47-17 (.734) while the remaining four foes are 9-24 (.273) ... the UW’s first five Pac-12 opponents are 31-8 (.795), with two of those losses to the UW ...only a true sophomore, Austin Seferian-Jenkins already has 81 career receptions for 1,016 yards ... the 81 receptions are tied for third-most in UW history by a tight end and the 1,016 yards rank fifth ... his 9 TD receptions also rank third by a TE ... Seferian-Jenkins’ 40 receptions this year are most in the nation among TEs ... Bishop Sankey has rushed for 100 yards in three games and ranks fifth in the Pac-12 in rushing ... Kasen Williams had 10 catches vs. Stanford, the first time a UW receiver had made double-digit catches in a game since Reggie Williams caught 13 vs. Arizona in 2003 ... THE HEAD COACH: In a frequently-told tale, Husky football coach Steve Sarki-sian recalls his days as a young assistant traveling to face Washington at Husky Stadium. During the drive across Lake Washington, with the iconic home of the Dawgs towering ahead, Sarkisian marveled aloud at the city, the stadium and the atmosphere surrounding the UW program. A decade or so later, Sarkisian is in charge of the Washington football program he was admiring that day. And in just two years, he has re-established the kind of tough, exciting environment that was then, and is again now, so closely associated with the Husky football. The 2011 season, Sarkisian’s third as head coach, provided more highlights for his up-and-coming program. The Husky offense posted one of its most prolific seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course of the season, the most by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most in school history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did the previous year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yards per game) and total offense (47 more yards per game), while the team’s third-down percent-age improved vastly over the previous season, from 32 to 46 percent. Sarkisian coached his team to a third straight win over Washington State in the annual Apple Cup to remain undefeated against the UW’s in-state rival and to wrap up a 7-5 regular-season record and 5-4 mark in the Pac-12 North. The Huskies secured a berth in the Valero Alamo Bowl, the No. 2 game in the Pac-12 bowl lineup. In 2010, Sarkisian’s second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step forward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and finished third in the Pac-10 Confer-ence with a 5-4 record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one of the bowl season’s top games, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskers was the last of a series of exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included three Husky wins decided on the very last play of the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plus another in which the winning score came inside the final minute (WSU). Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, 2008. From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didn’t think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. In his first season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he was right. Washing-ton, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in 2009. And, Sarkisian’s Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His string of success is nearly un-precedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nation’s most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans’ assistant head coach and offensive coordina-tor. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (2002-03) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a mem-ber of the Trojans’ staff, the team posted a combined 74-15 record. As offensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three sea-sons (1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transferred to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). He was a first-team Junior College All-America selection as a sophomore and earned all-conference honors in 1993 as a

freshman. He also played baseball at El Camino in 1993. He originally enrolled at USC as a baseball player, spending the fall of 1992 on the Trojans’ roster before transferring. Sarkisian was a standout football and baseball player at West Tor-rance (Calif.) High. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from BYU in 1997 after receiving his associate’s degree in general studies from El Camino in 1994. Sarkisian was born March 8, 1974. He and his wife, Stephanie, have two daugh-ters, Ashley and Taylor, and a son, Brady. Sarkisian’s Coaching Career:Year Team Pos. COACHING STAFF: Washington’s assistant coaching staff returns entirely includes five new members in 2012, meaning half of the 10 full-time coaches are in their first season at the UW. Nearly all of the nine full-time assistant coaches have some sort of tie to the Northwest and many played for then-Pac-10 football programs. The offensive side of the ball is led by newcomer Eric Kiesau, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who came to the UW from California. A former QB at Portland State, Kiesau spent the last decade at either Cal or Colorado. He joins three offensive coaches who have been at the UW since Steve Sarkisian was hired. Associate head coach - of-fense and running backs coach Joel Thomas, in his fourth year at UW, grew up in Port Angeles, Wash., and is a member of the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame. He is still the Vandals’ all-time leader in carries, rushing yards and rushing TDs. Fellow Idaho grad Dan Cozzetto is in his fourth season as the UW’s run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also the Washington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW from Arizona State. UW pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Jimmie Daugherty played QB at Missouri and spent most of his coach-ing career prior to the UW at the University of San Diego. Assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator Johnny Nansen is a fourth-year coach at the UW. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and spent the previous five years at Idaho before moving over to the UW. The four defensive coaches are all new to the UW this year. Coordinator Justin Wilcox grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent four years as a defensive back at Oregon. He came to the UW from Tennessee and, prior to that, coached at Boise State, among others. His former college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A four-year starter at Oregon and a native of Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL for seven years before moving on to coaching. After stints at Central Washington and Oregon, he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee before coming to Seattle. The new defensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a four-year letterman at Oregon State. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six of the last seven seasons. Defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at California be-fore moving to the UW this past off-season. A former Cal defensive lineman, he’d coached the line at his alma mater the last four years after two seasons as a GA. Washington also has two returning grad assistants and two new ones. Washington’s two returners are Jordan Paopao and Donte Williams. Paopao, who works with the tight ends, was a four-year starting center at the University of San Diego while Williams, who prepped at Culver City High in the Los Angeles area, was a defensive back at Syracuse. The newcomers are Eric Guttorp, a Seattle native who wrapped up his career as a UW kicker last season, and Andrew Rolin, who played and coached at USD alongside Paopao and Dougherty before heading north to Seattle this off-season.

VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies’ full-time coaching staff doesn’t include any UW graduates, nearly all of them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprising number have actually played for their alma mater against the Dawgs. Head man Steve Sarkisian’s only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996 came to the UW at Husky Stadium. New defensive coaches Justin Wilcox and Peter Sirmon both faced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregon from 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies’ recruiting coordinator and special teams coach, was on the opposite sideline for several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s and new defensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a few barnburners vs. the UW for Oregon State from 1997 to 2000. More recently, defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi squared off with the Huskies dur-ing his time as a d-lineman at California at the start of the last decade. And while neither offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto nor running backs coach Joel Thomas ever faced Washington during their careers at Idaho, both grew up in the Evergreen State. Finally, new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play his college football just across the border at Portland State.

HUSKIES vs. GOLDEN BEARS HISTORY: Washington and California are the only two teams that have played in what is now the Pac-12 Conference in every season since the league was founded in 1916. As that would indicate, they’ve played one another quite often. The Huskies hold a 50-38-4 record in the all-time series, which began in 1904. Last year in Seattle, the Huskies held on a late goalline stand to preserve a 31-23 victory as Keith Price threw for three TDs in the Pac-12 opener. In 2010 in Berkeley, the Huskies beat the Bears, 16-13, on the final play of the game, a one-yard run from Chris Polk, in the next-to-last week of the season. In 2009, the Huskies closed out their season with a 42-10 win over the Bears in Seattle. Jake Locker passed for 248 yards and three TDs and rushed for 77 and two more scores. In 2008, Cal won in Berkeley, in another season finale as Jahvid Best ran for 311 yards and four touchdowns on only 19 carries in a 48-7 Bears win. In 2007, the 37-23 Husky victory broke a streak of five straight Cal wins in the series. Prior to that five-game losing streak, the Huskies had won 19 consecutive games in the series, a streak that began with a 50-31 win in 1977. Before 2002, the last Cal win had come in 1976. Cal and UW first met in 1904, battling to a 6-6 tie in a game played in Seattle. In both 1915 and 1916, they played one another twice each year, with unbeaten Gil Dobie’s Washington team sweeping the four games. In 1917, Cal broke the UW’s 63-game unbeaten streak (still an NCAA record) with a 27-0 win in Berkeley. Other big games in the series include the 1937 game, when the unranked Huskies held No. 1 Cal to a 0-0 tie in Seattle. In 1991, the Bears probably came as close as anyone to beating Washington that national championship season, as Mike Pawlawski’s last-gasp pass into the endzone was batted down in a 24-17 UW win. Washington has also posted four of its nine biggest comebacks in history against California. The biggest ever was in 1988, when the Dawgs trailed 27-3 before rallying to win, 28-27. In 1981, Washington was down 21-0 in the third quarter before coming back for a 27-26 victory. A 20-point comeback in 1993 (24-23) and a 14-point rally in 1999 (31-27) also rank on the list. In 2001, the Huskies trailed 21-7 in the first quarter, but came back to earn a 31-28 victory in Berkeley. The Bears, however, then won five straight against the Huskies. In 2002, the Bears beat the Huskies, 34-27, at Husky Stadium to break the Dawgs’ 19-game streak in the series. The following year in Berkeley, Cal routed Washington, 54-7, in the next-to-last game of the season. In 2004, the Bears visited Husky Stadium and left with a 42-12 win. The 2005 game was a 56-17 Bears win in Seattle. In 2006 in Berkeley, Carl Bonnell hit Marlon Wood with a 40-yard pass on the final play of regulation to force overtime, but the Bears won in OT, 31-24. In 2007, Louis Rankin rushed for 224 yards and BrandonJohnson ran for 121 as the Huskies never trailed en route to the 37-23 win. Once again, it was Bonnell at the controls as the UW was without Jake Locker due to an injury suffered the previous week at Oregon State.

WASHINGTON-CALIFORNIA TIES: Washington has three former California assistant coaches on its current staff. UW offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau was on the staff at Cal from 2002 to 2005 and again last season. First-year Husky defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi played and coached in Berkeley, beginning his playing career in 2000. Husky offensive line coach and run game coordinator Dan Cozzetto worked on the Golden Bears staff for two seasons (1990-91) under Bruce Snyder. Cozzetto and Cal o-line coach Jim Michalczik were on the same staff at Oregon State with one another in 2000 and 2001. Michalczik is also married to former UW volleyball standout Jennifer Streatfeild. Cal’s roster lists just one player from the state of Washington: DL Deandre Coleman (Gar-field). Washington’s roster includes numerous Californians, including 11 from Northern California: Josh Banks (Stockton), DiAndre Campbell (Oakland), Ross Dolbec (Orinda), Ken Egu (San Francisco), Travis Feeney (Richmond), Anthony Gobern (Fair Oaks), Scott Lawyer (San Jose), Marcus Peters (Oakland), James Sample (Sacramento), Ben Teichman (Danville), Shaq Thompson (Sacramento), Cleveland Wallace (San Jose) and Erich Wilson II (East Palo Alto).

T E A M N O T E SLANDMARK VICTORY: Washington’s win over seventh-ranked and previously unbeaten Oregon State last Saturday was historically significant in several ways. Prior to that 20-17 win, the last time the Huskies had beaten an undefeated team later than the sixth week of the season was in 1982, when Washington beat a 9-0 and third-ranked Arizona State team in Tempe. The OSU win was also the Huskies’ second this season over a top-10 team as the Huskies beat then-No. 8 Stanford earlier in the year. Only four previous times in Husky history had the UW beaten two top-10 teams in a season: 2001, 1991, 1984 and 1982 (the 1991 team beat three top-10 teams).

HUSKIES vs. BAY AREA SCHOOLS: Washington has a combined, all-time record of 103-77-8 vs. opponents from the San Francisco Bay Area. Washington is 50-38-4 against Cal, 41-38-4 vs. Stanford, 10-0 vs. San Jose State, 1-1 vs. St. Mary’s and 1-0 vs. Santa Clara. The Huskies haven’t played Santa Clara since 1935 and St. Mary’s since 1947. Since 1977, UW is 53-13-0 vs. Bay Area teams: 23-5 vs. Cal, 22-8 vs. Stanford and 8-0 vs. San Jose State.

THE PAC-12: Last season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five divi-sion rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. This year (and last), the Huskies will not face UCLA or Arizona State. Prior to last year, the last time that Washington didn’t face UCLA in a season was in 1992 (when the Pac-10 schedule was eight games). The UW didn’t face Arizona State in 2003 or 2004.

CAPTAINS: At the Huskies’ annual “Raise the Woof!” preseason celebration, the captains for the 2012 season were unveiled. This season, thanks to a tie in the player voting, five captains were selected. On offense, junior quarterback Keith Price (Compton, Calif.) and senior center Drew Schaefer (Sammamish, Wash.) were honored. On defense, three players were selected: junior safety Sean Parker (Los Angeles), sophomore linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and senior cornerback Desmond Trufant (Tacoma). All five players are serving as UW captain for the first time as all four of the Huskies’ captains in 2011 have departed.

DECADE AFTER DECADE: Washington has won a conference title and a trip to the Rose Bowl in each of the last nine decades, dating back to the 1920s when Washington won the berth in 1923 and 1925. In the 1930s, the Dawgs won the ‘36 title. In the ‘40s, Washington earned the trip in 1943 and then barely slipped in under the wire in the 1950s, winning the 1959 crown. The Huskies won two Rose Bowl berths in the 1960s -- 1960 and 1963 -- and one in the 1970s (1977). Titles in 1980 and 1982 did it for that decade and three straight trips to Pasadena to begin the 1990s covered that 10-year span. In the 2000s, UW was the first team to earn Rose Bowl berths in nine straight decades. USC joined the Dawgs in that distinc-tion in 2004 after their New Year’s Day appearance in Pasadena.

THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 181-57-3 (.757) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. Washington is 2-1 such games this season as Bishop Sankey hit the century mark in wins over Portland State and Stanford and the loss at Oregon.

HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 79 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 65-13-1 (.829) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 40-10-1 (.794) when rushing for 200 yards.

PLAYING AT CENTURYLINK FIELD: Washington will play the entire 2012 home season at CenturyLink Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders FC soccer. CenturyLink Field is located in the SoDo District of Seattle, just south of downtown (hence, SoDo). The stadium was opened in 2002 on the site of the old Kingdome. Washington has played two games there, prior to this season. In 2005, the UW opened the season with a “road” game vs. Air Force (the game was Air Force’s home game, but moved to the “neutral” site), falling to the Falcons, 20-17. Last year, in a bid to give the Husky Stadium renovation project a head start, the Huskies played the annual Apple Cup game at CenturyLink Field, beating Wash-ington State, 38-21, in front of 64,559 fans. The stadium, operated by First & Goal, Inc., has a FieldTurf playing surface and a football capacity of 67,000.

HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium is currently undergoing a massive renovation which began last November following the Oregon game. The Seattle icon was first opened in 1920. Upper decks were added in the 1950s (south) and 1980s (north). Renovations will completely remake the lower bowl and the south deck. The stadium track will be removed and an operations center for the football team will be built into the west end. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com.

HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that will be completed in time for the 2013 season. The 2011 season marked the 92nd season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. Thanks to several major renovations, Husky Stadium’s seating capacity increased to 72,500. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 357-169-21 (.673). Washington will re-open the stadium vs. Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013.

FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. LB Jamaal Kearse is the younger brother of former WR Jer-maine Kearse, who finished his career last season. RS-freshman safety Evan Ze-ger’s father, John, played safety at the UW, lettering in 1980 and 1981, while sophomore WR Kasen Williams’ dad, Aaron was a four-year letterman (1979-82) wide receiver for the Huskies. Freshman OL Shane Brostek is the son of Husky All-America center Bern Brostek (1986-89). Senior DL Talia Crichton, is a cousin of former DE Daniel Te’o-Nesheim. Junior quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tailback Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, sophomore TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson. Incidentally, at least three Huskies have close family ties to Washington State. LB Nate Fellner is the grandson of former WSU head coach Jim Sweeney. Cooper Pelluer’s father, Scott, played at WSU, as did Husky cornerback Desmond Trufant’s brother Marcus. Pelluer’s uncle Steve, however, was a UW QB and his father Scott was an assistant coach at UW.

RANDOM NOTES: Washington’s roster includes player from eight different states (based on where the player completed high school): Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawai’i, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington ... Washington has a long tradition of great Polynesian players; this year’s roster includes 19 players of Samoan, Tongan or Hawai’ian descent: James Atoe, Jonathan Amosa, Jes-se Callier, Talia Crichton, Jarett Finau, Cory Fuavai, Princeton Fuimaono, Micah Hatchie, Hau’oli Jamora, Lawrence Lagafuaina, Sione Potoa’e, Danny Shelton, John Timu, Semisi Tokolahi, Siosifa Tufunga, Taniela Tupou, Thomas Tutogi, Pio Vatuvei and Psalm Wooching.

PRICE ON THE CHARTS: Husky QB Keith Price set a number of records last sea-son, most notably the season records for touchdown passes, completion percent-age and pass efficiency. He also entered the 2012 season ranked No. 1 in career completion percentage and efficiency and is climbing the career TD chart. Here’s a look at where Price ranks on several UW single-season and career top-10 lists:
