History of NATO● US joined this European pact, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ● The NATO treaty was signed in Washington on April 4, 1949.● The Senate approved the treaty on July 21, 1949● NATO’s goal was to “keep the Russians out, the Germans down, and the
Americans in.”

History of Warsaw Pact● The Warsaw pact was a neutral defense treaty between central and
eastern Europe.● Like NATO, the main goal of the Warsaw Pact was to form a strong
defense with neighboring countries to scare off enemies from attacking.
The Warsaw Pact conference, 11 May 1955, Warsaw, Poland.
Who was in the NATO alliance?
● Belgium● Great Britain● Italy● Iceland● Luxembourg● France● US● Canada● Netherlands● Denmark● Norway ● Portugal● West Germany● Turkey● Greece
Who was in the Warsaw pact?
● Soviet Union● Albania● Bulgaria● Czechoslovakia● East Germany● Hungary● Poland● Romania
What did the pact/alliance do?The pacts and alliances formed tension and sides for the military standoff during the Cold War.
Our OpinionsWe think that the right decisions were made because, even though NATO pressured the Soviet Union to create the Warsaw Pact, America, as a whole, was exhausted; if we were going to go another round, we needed more friends in our corner. We believe that racism, sexism, classism, or misunderstanding of culture did not affect this event.
Benefits● NATO gave us a strong alliance with other countries that is still present
today.● If any countries in the alliance are attacked, then all other members would
attack the enemy. This is a principle of collective defense.● The Warsaw Pact benefitted the Soviets with many third world allies.
International /Domestic EventsThese alliances created national turmoil because neighboring countries where choosing sides.
NATO really benefited America because we knew that, if we got involved with the Soviets, we have backup.
