warm wishes
2
It is hard to believe we are halfway through this milestone year – celebrating 30 years of wishes! Since our beginning in 1983, we have granted more than 4,500 wishes. At the close of our fiscal year in August, 2012, our chapter had granted an additional 311 wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. This was a record number for Orange County and the Inland Empire.
This past October, we kicked off our 30th Anniversary year by hosting the inaugural “Evening of Wishes” gala. We were honored to have one of the founding members of Make-A-Wish America, Frank Shankwitz and his wife Kitty, join us for our celebration. Frank took the stage and told the heartwarming story of Chris Greicius, the little boy with leukemia whose wish was to be a police officer. This is the wish that started it all. Frank simply and emotionally said, “The granting of this simple first wish shaped the rest of my life and has made me who I am today. I owe it all to Chris!” Frank went on
to become the first president and CEO for Make-A-Wish and remains very active today as one of its top Wish Ambassadors.
“Evening of Wishes” also brought with it a very unique opportunity for those in attendance. A wish is a powerful thing, especially when a community can experience it. This is exactly what happened during our special event. Three-year-old Avery, who wished to be a princess who wears purple, celebrated her coronation in front of more than 200 people!
There are many wishes still to grant and many more children to reach. As we work toward our goal of granting 335 wishes this fiscal year, we want to thank you for all of your support and also ask that you continue your investment in our wish-granting program. We have a very long way to go and we know that with your help, we will continue to grant every wish that comes to us!
Best Wishes!

Three-year-old Avery adores Disney princesses and delights in pretty pink tea parties. In her bright and limitless imagination, Avery’s deepest wish is to become a princess herself – to wear a crown, eat pink cupcakes and live in “Purple Castles Land with all the purple ponies.” This magical world of make believe brings joy to Avery’s heart, a smile to her face and carries her far from the harsh reality of medical treatments.
When Avery was just 2 years old, she was diagnosed with Wilms’ Tumor, a form of childhood cancer affecting the kidneys. Her little world quickly turned from play time to hospital visits. In the middle of Avery’s battle against this illness, Make-A-Wish entered her life and provided an opportunity for young Avery to think about happy things once again.
Avery’s wish to be a princess was granted in an unforgettable, royal way.
On Friday, Oct. 26, Make-A-Wish hosted the inaugural Evening of Wishes gala, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Orange County and the Inland Empire chapter.
The event took a surprise turn when Evening of Wishes proved there was something quite literal behind the name and guests learned a wish was
about to be granted.
The ballroom at the Balboa Bay Club quickly turned into a Renaissance-themed high court, complete with a throne and a Master of Revels, who announced the coronation of a new princess. Members of the royal family, which included brothers Dallen, age 9, and Darren, age 7, and their father, were ushered in before attention was directed toward the side doors and an elegantly dressed little girl walked into the ballroom holding her mother’s hand. The high court bowed as she walked passed. Everyone in attendance stood to welcome the soon-to-be-crowned princess. As Avery made her entrance into the ballroom, the crowd cheered and waved pink Princess Avery wands.
Avery took her seat on the throne and was crowned. After Avery’s coronation, she was presented with many gifts, including her own purple pony. She then took her place at the head table with her family. They celebrated and danced the night away.
Avery’s wish allowed her to dream as big as she could. She was able to forget all the limitations of her medical condition and focus on being Avery – an incredible little girl with a beautiful smile and a big heart.

Evening of Wishes
The inaugural Evening of Wishes gala kicked off the 30th anniversary of Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire on Friday, Oct. 26, at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach. Deepest thanks to our special guest, founding member of Make-A-Wish America, Frank Shankwitz, who delivered an eloquent speech relaying his experience with Chris Greicius, the inspiration behind the creation of Make-A-Wish. Be sure to save the date for the 2nd Annual Evening of Wishes taking place Friday, Oct. 25, at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach. It is sure to be another spectacular and magical evening!

Volunteering with Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire gives you the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of children in your community. The time and talents that individuals give as volunteers are invaluable and essential to the Make-A-Wish mission. Volunteers help fulfill this mission in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, wish granting, event planning, fundraising, office assistance and much, much more! Every task is important, every position is essential, and every volunteer is cherished as every piece is crucial in putting the wish puzzle together.
You, too, can be a part of providing unforgettable experiences for local children with life-threatening medical conditions. There is a particular need for Spanish speakers but all are encouraged to apply! Simply visit www.wishocie.org and fill out a volunteer application to start your journey! As one volunteer once said, “The reward is in the eyes and smile of a wish child. There is nothing more fulfilling and nothing more that I would rather be doing than making sure every child that qualifies to receive a wish gets the experience of a lifetime!”
We need volunteers!
Just a few short years ago, Carolyn Chapparo found her calling to be a volunteer with Make-A-Wish. Since then she has helped to grant more than 60 wishes for local children. We caught up with Carolyn to find out more about what inspired her to volunteer and learn about some of her favorite moments:
How did you learn about Make-A-Wish and what prompted you to get involved?
I became curious about Make-A-Wish when I was employed by The Disney Co. I didn’t get involved right then because I believed I didn’t have the time, but I always said, “one day.” In 2009, I retired from my career as a corporate investigator because of a life-threatening medical condition. Once my health started to improve, I discovered that “one day” had arrived. It was now my turn to give back. What has been the most rewarding, touching or memorable experience for you?
The most rewarding for me is hearing the memorable stories from wish children and their families once their wishes have been granted. For example, learning that a child had a good night’s sleep for the first time ever because he received a new bed; or when a wish child says, “Having my wish granted was the best thing that has ever happened to me.” I am thankful for the wonderful families I have met over the past two years. They have helped me to realize how beautiful and meaningful life is.
Do you have any advice for individuals considering volunteering their time with Make-A-Wish?
Make-A-Wish offers volunteers the unique opportunity to impact the lives of others, which is one of the greatest benefits. I believe that volunteering not only gives you the chance to change other people’s lives, but also your own.

Dear Make-A-Wish,
This past week was the best week ever! My name is Kennedy.
I am a 13-year-old girl with Rett Syndrome, and although
this keeps me from talking, the big smile on my face and
twinkle in my eyes say thank you so much for my dream
vacation with my family.
On Sunday morning, we were picked up by our fairy tale
coach (limousine). I have never felt like such a princess
before. We boarded our cruise ship, the beautiful Disney
Wonder, and soon set sail for the Mexican Riviera. The
next week was filled with great food, fun activities and
wonderful entertainment.
We were very busy trying to experience as much as we
could on this cruise. We were given a little extra special
treatment with front-row seats to all the Disney shows,
our own guest services concierge, and a personal meet and greet with all the Disney characters. I got
to meet them up close and personal.
Thank you very much! Dreams do come true. We had the best time as a family.
We appreciate all your efforts at Make-A-Wish.

10-year-old Logan has raised almost $2,800 by asking for donations in lieu of birthday gifts and hosting a Halloween party fundraiser.
This past November, Sigma Phi Epsilon’s Cal Beta Gamma Chapter (UCR) hosted the second annual 5K run, in honor of their brother Chris Lee. The Chris Lee 5K Run for Hope was a huge success bringing together individuals from all over the community and raising more than $3,000 to help local children!
Students and teachers at Patricia Beatty Elementary School held their inaugural school-wide Make-A-Wish jog-a-thon, raising an incredible $3,845.

The Alpha Phi Sorority at Chapman University held its annual male beauty pageant, Mr. University, on Nov. 28 with 50 percent of proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish. This event gets the entire Greek community involved as participants compete for the title in swimsuit, evening wear and Q & A categories.
Ruben S. Ayala High School leads this school year as the top-fundraising Make-A-Wish Club in our program, having raised more than $4,600 so far! The club reached its goal in December to adopt 17-year-old Isabella’s wish to have a MacBook Pro. Isabella is actually an Ayala student and a member of the club!

Macy’s Thanks for Sharing & Believe campaigns
On Monday, Dec. 3, Discovery Science Center hosted 20 of our wish families for the Macy’s Santa Bus Tour. They had so much fun making the ginger bread houses and race cars!
Later that same day, the Santa Ana Macy’s kept the holiday spirit alive by inviting Sarah, whose wish is to be a chef, to be Santa’s guest of honor. With a little help from Santa, Macy’s kicked off Sarah’s wish by providing her all the necessary baking equipment to prepare for her wish day! Thank you to everyone at Macy’s and Discovery Science Center for making this special day possible!
This holiday season, Macy’s raised more than $9 million from the Thanks for Sharing and Believe campaigns. We appreciate everyone who participated in the Believe letter-writing campaign and the wonderful response from our local schools, community groups and Make-A-Wish friends. Together we collected more than 56,000 letters in our community.

“Each year, the Orange County chapter of the Women Presidents’ Organization selects a charity to support. This year, we chose Make-A-Wish.
When my 10-year-old nephew was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, Make-A-Wish was there for him. In 1996, at the age of 12, Make-A-Wish granted his wish to go to Disney World; this was the last trip he took before the disease took him from us.
The trip was such a wonderful experience for him and his family, that when I had the opportunity to choose our organization’s charity this year, there was no question it was going to be Make-A-Wish.
I am extremely proud to be associated with the generous ladies of the Women Presidents’ Organization. Together, we raised enough funds to adopt a wish for a little boy named Nathaniel, whose wish was to go to Disney World, just like my nephew!”
– Aurea Griffith, President, Central EnterprisesWomen Presidents’ Organization Orange County Chapter

We were thrilled to be part of the I Survived Real Estate 2012 event hosted by The Norris Group at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda this past October. The evening was educational, inspirational and raised more than $78,000 for Make-A-Wish and St. Jude!
We’d like to thank Lucasfilm Ltd., Nerdist Industries and Octagon Events, all of which teamed up to host the Course of the Force, an Olympic torch style relay run – with lightsabers! The event raised more than $80,000 to benefit the Southern California chapters of Make-A-Wish. Check our website for details to register for the 2013 run in July! May the force be with you! For the past three years, Kelley’s Kookies
has donated 20 percent of all sales from the month of August. Through
this campaign, Kelley’s Kookies raised enough funds to adopt a child’s wish.
The Elite OC hosted its annual Schmooze Cruise, raising $5,000 to adopt the group’s first wish. Special thanks to everyone on
Elite OC’s board of directors, who made this all possible.
Ed Henry and Gregg Combs hosted the 4th Annual “Just for Kids” Golf Tournament, pancake breakfast and car show in September to benefit our chapter. The event raised nearly $8,500, making it possible for Mr. Henry and Mr. Combs to adopt the wish of a 14-year-old girl from Victorville.
