LOCAL SHOPPING AREA FEELS NEGLECTED With £6m spent on the High Street improvements, County Councillor David Kendall is asking questions about plans for the Warley shops. David has asked the Leader of the Council what is being done to help the shopkeepers in the Warley Hill area who play a vital role in community life, especially as the population around here has increased so much. He said: “This area is a lifeline for the locals, as demonstrated by the successful fight to keep Warley Hill Post Office open. There are a variety of shops here that allow people to feed the family, buy a paper, get their dry cleaning done, have a meal, get fresh bread, a bottle of wine and have an evening’s entertainment. We simply cannot afford to let this area decline and I will be fighting for some investment.” WWW.BRENTWOOD-ONGARLIBDEMS.ORG.UK Follow me: www.twitter.com/CllrDJKendall Autumn 2009 High Street stained? Cllr David Kendall has raised serious concerns regarding the stains that are starting to appear on the new stones in the High Street. Stones have already been stained with drink spills and because of the porous nature of the stone some of these stains could be permanent. David has written to officers at the County and Borough Councils to seek assurances that the stonework can be cleaned. He said: “With millions of pounds being spent on the High Street improvements, the staining issue needs to be properly addressed otherwise the stonework will quickly look an eyesore. Your County Councillor David Kendall reports back....Car Parking Charges: David has welcomed the free parking offered until the end of the year duringthe High Street improvements but says it is too little too late for many retailers. David will be pushingfor a complete review into car parking charges in Brentwood.Information Centre: Originally requested by Cllr Kendall, opening the Information Centre onSaturdays received cross-party support and will now shut for a half day in the week and open for a halfday on Saturday making it much easier to get additional orange and green recycling bags!Bring Back the White Hart campaign: Our petition is still live on our website!Winifred Dell House: David recently visited the fully refurbished residential home in Essex Way andwas very impressed with what he saw. When the home was closed for renovation, David supportedstaff and families who raised serious concerns about residents some suffering from dementia beingdispersed into homes across Essex. Hopefully now that Winifred Dell has reopened some of theseformer residents will be able to return and enjoy the new facilities.Dark Lane: David has asked for action to be taken to try and reduce the amount of non essential trafficusing Dark Lane. The Lane which is popular with horse riders and walkers has recently seen anincrease in speeding vehicles and needs action taken as soon as possible.

Brentwood Station: At a recent meeting with Kirit Varasani,Manager at Brentwood Station, Cllr David Kendall was assured that themuch needed improvements were still going to happen. These includea new ticket office, bike racks, disabled access lifts, and ticket barriers. It is hoped that work will start in April 2010.

Cllr Kendall has also been holding the Tories to account at CountyCouncil and asked about rapid installation of fast, reliable and high

capacity broadband across Essex, what they are doing to lobby the Government for automatic grantingof small business rate relief to all eligible businesses and what is being done to address the dramatic34% increase in the level of complaints against Essex Police (way above the 8% national average andnow the third highest in England & Wales).

The Tories’ national opinion poll ratings seem to count for little in Brentwood wheretheir popularity seems to have nose dived. Week on week the local papers highlightstory after story that show them staggering from one crisis to another and thereseems little end in sight. Recent gems include:

The Liberal Democrats taking two seats of them at the County Council elections Resignations over plans to modernise the local Tory party U Turn on Sunday car parking charges at the Town Hall The Council’s £633,000 accounts slip up embarrassment Refusing public access to financial information

Local residents are now saying that the thirteen Lib Dem-controlled years weren’t sobad after all! If you want to help the local Lib Dems fight back call David for a chat!
