TERRORISM!

Page 3: War on terror

Introduction: Since the advent of mankind terrorism has been a great

threat to it’s peaceful existence. Throughout history there have been incidents of minor or major terrorism in every part of the world affecting not only the common masses but higher ups alike. Some historical acts of terrorism are:

Gunpowder plot (an attempt to destroy the English parliament)

Boston tea party (an attack on British property by the sons of liberty)

Assassinations carried out by the Hashshashin (a.k.a. the Assassins) against the fatimid rule.

Racial terrorism by the “KKK” in the US.

Definition of Terrorism: The topic of terrorism has been a highly debatable one

throughout the earlier times and remains such to this date. The reason being the variable factors involved which make it rather convoluted and it rather becomes difficult to term any action as terrorism as such. Let’s take for example a person who is mentally disabled and he/she commits an action that might indicate terrorism but in reality is rather the flaw of the system unable to keep a check on that particular person… etc.

A good definition of terrorism is however presented here: “It is the unlawful act of violence or use of force against

person or property to intimidate or coerce a government, civilian population or segments of society in the furtherance of social or political objectives”

War on terror: The threat of “terrorism” integrated in the minds of the

society, has been a cause for fear for decades now as it is random and uninvited. Therefore to combat terrorism many countries have now developed what we call as “Special Forces”, one of their particular objectives is to counter terrorism. They are exceptionally well trained (or are meant to be), provide protection to the civilian population in case outbreak of “terrorism” occurs, are well provided therefore requiring considerable amount of funding for their proper functioning. Many of these forces’ units have been vital in tackling the disease of “terrorism” via sophisticated techniques and high tech equipment, intelligence agencies work hand in hand with them providing them the necessary Intel. Some worth mentioning are.

SOVIET AFGHAN WAR: America as we know today (and for some time now) is

among one of the most powerful countries in the world. As a strong country with massive amounts of resources America has always had a keen desire to look upon the major events in the world, and during this “looking upon” and due to various other reasons has indulged itself in the international affairs and sometimes as said by some critics in a much rather “meddlesome” way. The world wars are a prime example of that!

How ever one of the “international events” namely the entrance of the Russian forces into Afghanistan was of much importance to American Policy Makers, since Russia was an enemy (has been during the cold war) to the US, she saw it fit to stop Russia in it’s tracks and did so by manipulating the local populous with the help of it’s superior intelligence structure. The conditions were just right for US to give a deathblow to the Russian empire, and the deathblow was carried out in a way that split Russia into many pieces!

Page 8: War on terror

WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARDS! After Russia was defeated, the Americans withdrew which

was a major loophole in the policy, everybody had planned the war but very little thought was put into what would happen afterwards….

Afghanistan went into political turmoil, the locals started fighting for power and resources. As the result of this bloody struggle, a group of people came out victorious which were to be named “Taliban” somewhere in the near future. The story of how they came into existence is very interesting but is time consuming. After they started ruling the country they made it very clear that their major purpose was to implement Islam in it’s “pure form”, and thus started a strict period of bans. Most forms of entertainment were either banned or limited to much extent. All in all strict Islamic “shria law” was implemented. This gave much reason to the US to AGAIN meddle in a country’s affairs and they verily did so!

“9/11” THE START OF A BLOODY GAME: 9/11 was an event that shocked the whole specially the US.

The credibility of the event is still under debate (actually the situation is quite convoluted)… however, one thing’s for certain and that is, because of this war, many people have lost their lives, trillions worth of weapons have been used, great deal of properties have been lost and well… both sides have suffered great losses.

AFTER 9/11

Page 11: War on terror

Terrorism After 9/11: So the thing is that terrorist attacks have quadrupled or so

after the events of 9/11 but the point to be noted here is that was the American invasion justified? An invasion due to a controversial event which was yet to be investigated properly…. And well…. Just as I was writing this very page of my presentation I came across this web page.

http://www.globalresearch.ca/did-9-11-justify-the-war-in-afghanistan

There is a lot! Written in this very page which basically boils down to the fact (proved with detailed logic) that the American invasion was illegal by every means. This makes this presentation rather difficult because if American invasion was illegal and wrong how can we term the actions of the so called terrorists (i.e. “Taliban”) wrong? Rather it makes them righteous as they are trying to defend their culture and country. Anyhow the fact is that I have to make it twenty pages and so it shall be….

Page 12: War on terror

POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT AFTER 9/11: The political environment of Afghanistan changed

drastically. Taliban lost their control and a puppet government was established , which to till date stays corrupt and useless. Afghanistan was a state with strict rules but developing economy and a developing literacy rate. The Americans thought that they had won the game only to know that the Taliban were regrouping and reinforcing themselves somewhere in the world. And after some time they made a comeback and made sure that the opposition knew they were staying this time!...

All in all the political structure of Afghanistan has been shaken up since 9/11. Masses are forced to lead a life of suffering and poverty. Basic facilities such as education, health and such are in high demand. Infrastructure has been reduced to nil.

Page 13: War on terror

ROLE OF INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES: The American intelligence has… as usual played a great

deal in this war. They played it safe with the famous rule “Divide and conquer”, to decrease their efforts they first divided afghans into two groups, first is the Northern Alliance while the second being the ethnic “Pashtoons” constituting almost 70% of the main population. In this way they used local human resources to do their dirty work by providing them the necessary mean i.e. weapon and necessary equipment. But since the return of the smarter much “versatile” version of Taliban they lost the support of the main population due to the brutal tactics employed by their adversaries.

Another major intelligence factor in this war has been “Al Qaeda”, which is often blamed for the recruitment of “Mujahideen” from all around the world, and by the looks of it they have been very effective.

EFFECTS

Page 15: War on terror

Impacts of current war in Afghanistan: A total of 2037 US and UK troops have been killed in the

current war in AfghanistanHowever, there is something far more shocking, and that is the relentless killing of innocent civilians

The 2037 seems rather insignificant to the 12,000 reported Afghanistan civilians who have been killed, never mind the 10,000 villages which have been destroyed by weapons which were intended to destroy enemy targets.

The social implications are by far the most devastating as they involve the families of innocent civilians being killed.

Page 16: War on terror

Migration of people: It has been seen that about three million people being

forced to flee and settle in neighboring countries Iran or Pakistan.

"In 32 years of war, many people have lost their lives or migrated to other countries," said Ajar Khan Tanah, who works at the association and helped organize the rally. "These demonstrators want warlords, who are still in power, to be removed from their positions. They want to see a museum created for the victims to keep their memory alive."

Page 17: War on terror

Some….. negative effects of war: It is important to note, that all the negative effects of war

are terrible such as debt and a loss of wildlife, however there is nothing more terrible than a family without a father.

Prince Charles said he could identify with the families’ grief, having lost his uncle and mentor, Lord Louis Mountbatten, in a 1979 terrorist bombing in Northern Ireland. “For so many of those left behind,” he said, it had been “a continuing, awful agony that has to be endured day by day.

Page 18: War on terror

Human cost of war on terror! 16,725-19,013 Civilians Killed. The cost of 9/11, the American shorthand for the events of

September 11, 2001. Nineteen hijackers plus other al Qaeda plotters spent an estimated $400,000 to $500,000 on the plane attacks that killed 2,995 people and caused $50 billion to $100 billion in economic damages.
