Want More Rockstars?

Cultivate These 4 Traits

SmartTribes Institute presents...

THE FOUR key traits that must be identified and

cultivated to achieve full rock star potential.

HOW to look for these traits in others.

WHICH of these traits can be learned (and how!)

WHAT this means for you as a leader!

In this presentation, you will learn:

Focus

Learning

Personal

Social

The four key traits that predict rock star performers*...

*According to Kevin Ochsner, a neuroscientist at Columbia University

Let's take a closer look at what each of these means...

Focus has two parts

Selective attention: what we choose to pay

attention to and zoom

in on, whether it's

broad & general or

narrow & specific.

Ability to zoom out: to

see relationships &

context between

things. To manage the

signal-to-noise ratio

inside one’s brain and

manage internal noise

(thoughts).

Does the person you’ve

identified as a high potential

focus in these ways?

QUESTION:

Learning

swiftly and

retaining

learning

requires

these four

things.

Learning is key Attention (there it is again!): Be present andstay focused.

Generation: When learning enables us to make connections/associations and effectively contextualize.

Emotion: Emotion helps us retain what was learned.

Spacing: Making space around learning is key too—we need time to digest and process what was learned.

Does the person you’ve

identified as a high potential

learn in these ways?

QUESTION:

The individual demonstrates knowing

themselves, being clear on their motives, their

strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats.

Personal ability is two-fold

The individual demonstrates self-

regulation: the ability to control responses

and assess themselves, others, status of a

project or deliverable. It helps them determine

what to do next, whether a goal was attained.

Does the person you’ve

identified as a high potential

have these personal

abilities?

QUESTION:

Social skills enable one to both read people

accurately and influence them.

They are able to tune in by watching the other

person’s body language, breathing, facial

expressions and listening to their speech

patterns to discern what they might be

feeling.

Social

Does the person you’ve

identified as a high potential

have these social skills?

QUESTION:

What if someone doesn't have all four of these skills?

Is it too late? Can these things be learned?

Here's how...

YES!

Focus is very trainable via

mindset, mindfulness,

distancing (pausing before you

respond), and resisting

distraction.

Learning is very trainable through

mindfulness (see Focus!) to increase attention

and emotional connection, and through

consciously creating space for learning to sink in.

Personal is trainable through emotional

regulation (see Focus again!).

Also important here is

reframing.

(examples: “When my PC

crashes it means it’s time to

take a break”; “it’s not a

personal attack, she must

be just having a bad day.”)

How can I reframe this situation?

Social is trainable too!

Our work at SmartTribes Institute

shows that anyone can build social

skills in leadership, sales, marketing,

engineering, client care, all areas of a

company, all industries,

with any human

being.

Now that you know how to identify and cultivate rock star

performers...

Here are your next steps as a leader:

Assess Your Team. Find out who has strengths in which areas.

1.

Restructure. Form teams to have complete diversity of skills

(focus, learning, personal, social), thus ensuring your

teams are well-rounded and high-performing.

2.

Watch your

Rockstar Team go!

3.

Here's a recap of what we learned...

THE FOUR key traits of rockstar performers.

HOW to identify these traits in your team.

WHICH of these traits can be learned.

WHAT this means for you as a leader, and how

you can use this knowledge to identify existing talent, cultivate future rockstars in your

organization, and build well-rounded, high
