General Clubs

Academic Quiz Bowl--Sponsor: Dan Gidick (H203)

Description: There are three or four different practice times during the week. Members of the Quiz Bowl team are expected to

attend at least one practice per week. Junior Varsity (9th and 10th grades) practice with Varsity (11th and 12th grades). Requirements to Join: Academic Quiz Bowl requirements are knowledge over a broad spectrum of academic topics and a

willingness to make a commitment to practice and go to the meets.

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Adventure Club exists to promote environmental education and stewardship of resources and a love

of the outdoors, including camping/paddling/kayaking. We believe that if students are aware of environmental issues and engaged in experiential education activities that make use of unspoiled air, soil, water, and biological resources they will become responsible citizens.

Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students at Wando with an interest in the outdoors.

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Wando All-Sports Club seeks to promote student wellness by creating an opportunity for students to

engage in enjoyable, non-competitive sports games. Requirements to Join: All are welcome!

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of the Wando Angling Club is to organize fishing events and tournaments, to be active in

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Wando Bow Club is designed for the low country sportsman (girl or boy). The purpose of this club is

to gain or strengthen an appreciation of the outdoors. Technically this is an archery club but they will learn much more. Requirements to Join: All are welcome!

Christian Followers Club--Sponsor: Jennifer Houston (B219)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to create dedicated students of Wando High School, promote a healthy

Christian lifestyle, and give students guidance, a place to relax, and the courage to overcome their problems with the assistance of God.

Requirements to Join: Open to all WHS students.

Cyber Defense--Sponsors: Thomas Hundley (H122)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Wando Warrior Cyber Defense Team is designed to help students interested in learning about

networking and cyber security compete in state, regional, and national competitions in several different areas. The Team attends several different highly competitive events each year, each with their own style and objectives. Please see a sponsor for details about the meeting times.

Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students interested in networking and cyber security

Debate Team--Sponsor: Katie Givens (B216)

Purpose/Mission of Club: We will practice at WHS and compete in local debate competitions. Requirements to Join: Must have completed or are enrolled in Speech elective course.

DREAM--Sponsor: Shirley Verma (E217)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of DREAM is to encourage students to believe in self, work hard, and be successful.

DREAM stands for dedication, respect, exceptional, achievement, and matriculate. Requirements to Join: All students are welcome!

Ecology Conservation Club--Sponsors: Lawrie Kueneman (H231)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of the Ecology Conservation Club is to promote awareness and understanding of our

environment and to encourage activities that inspire our community to join us in our commitment to protect the environment. Requirements to Join: The club is open to all students. To join, please attend one of the meetings.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)--Sponsors: Brad Smith (D206)/Tyler Ann Wilson (T27)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of FCA is to impact the world for Christ through athletes and coaches. FCA holds regular

huddle meetings to encourage Christian athletes to serve Christ both on the field/court and in their personal lives. We bring in guest speakers/musicians as well as utilizing Wando athletes to foster this end.

Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Fiction Writing (Pen and Pads) Club)--Sponsor: Katy Hebert (C207)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Pens & Pads Fiction Writing Club is an organization for writer’s of fictional works, long or short, to

create and workshop their stories for publication and consumer distribution. Through meetings, writers will share their work using the

principles of writing workshop and receive feedback regarding their writing from other workshop members. There may be occasional

opportunities for guest speakers, field trips, publication, and community workshops/camps as well.

Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students interested in writing and sharing fictional works.

Gay-Straight Alliance (SPECTRUM)--Sponsor: Stephanie Mignone (T13)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Gay-Straight Alliance's purpose is to provide information about issues relevant to the LGBTQ

community and to encourage a healthy dialogue among all students. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all Wando students.

Guitar Club--Sponsor: Gary Brown (B105). Club webpage

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to bring together all students who are interested in learning or improving their

skills as guitar players. All ability levels are welcome including someone who has never picked up a guitar to a lifelong enthusiast. During meetings, participants will learn basic guitar skills such as chords, learning music notation, and an introduction to all genres of music.

Requirements to Join: Bring a guitar, patience, and a desire to learn. Cost is free.

Hacky Sack Club—Sponsor: David Fralix (H124)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to gather and play Hacky Sack. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Hear Us Speak (WHS Warriors Book Reviews Club)--Sponsor: Lynne Plumb (E218)

Purpose/Mission of Club: This is a club that will read and review recent Young Adult literature. Part of the review will involve a

written response to the book and to present this review on Tribe Talk and display it in the Media Center. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students, but attendance will be a critical element for the club's success.

History Club--Sponsor: Daniel Gidick (H203)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to encourage interest in Charleston history through trips to local sites. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Interact—Sponsor: Corinne Mills (B209)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of Interact is to provide opportunity for young people to work together in a world fellowship

dedicated to service and world understanding.

Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

International Club—Sponsor: Katie Givens (B216)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to expose students to the international community at Wando while becoming

aware of different cultural and current events around the world. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Invisible Children--Sponsor: Rebecca Mitchell (F216)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to fundraise for the organization and make sure students at Wando are aware

of the situation in Uganda. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Junior Classical League (Latin Club)--Sponsor: Arnold Wagner (B214)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Junior Classical League promotes the study of the classics, and does so through various

competitions and community service projects.

Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Key Club International--Sponsor: Cindy Hollis (H116)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so

successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities (Key Club International website). The Key Club holds food drives and bake sales to raise money for making donations to local charities, including but not limited to, Families Helping Families, Habitat for Humanity, and ASPCA.

Requirements to Join: The Key Club is open to all students.

Marine Science Club--Sponsor: Callie Van Koughnett (F204)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of the Marine Science Club is to promote an awareness and understanding of the marine

and coastal environment, as well as to encourage activities that teach us and others to protect and clean up the marine environment. Requirements to Join: All interested students are welcome to join!

Mock Trial--Sponsor: Sally Wallace (T5)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Mock Trial is a competitive program sponsored by the South Carolina Bar. School sponsors along with

local attorney coaches prepare the team for state and national competitions. The goals of the program are to educate students about the basis of the American judicial system and the mechanics of litigation. A mock trial case will be studied and prepared for competition.

Requirements to Join: There are no fees involved. Students audition for a place on the team which is open to all grade levels.

Model UN--Sponsor: Jared Tyler (D215)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the U.N. General Assembly and other multilateral

bodies. Model U.N. promotes student and teacher interest in international relations and related subjects, increases the capacity for students to engage in problem solving, teaches aspects of conflict resolution, research skills, and communication skills, and creates the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

Requirements to Join: Any student can participate in Model U.N., so long as they have the ambition to learn something new, and to

work with people to try and make a difference in the world.

Newcomers/New Students--Sponsor: Erin Lowry (D214)/Jared Tyler (D215)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The mission of the New Warriors Club is to make new students feel welcome at Wando. We aim to

introduce new students to one another and to guide them through their first year. Requirements to Join: New students of every grade are welcome.

National Ocean Science Bowl Team--Sponsor: Callie Van Koughnett (F204), Courtney Reece (F205)

Purpose/Description: The purpose of this team is to prepare for a competition held in Columbia every year the last weekend of

February. The team consists of five people who are quick on buzzers and want to learn about every aspect of the world’s oceans. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Photography--Sponsor: Kelley Simpson (C216)

Purpose/Mission: The photography club's purpose is to help and share young photographer's experiences with one another. Requirements to Join: A basic knowledge of photography.

Pokemon/Team Rocket--Sponsor: Julianne Persson (F201)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to have fun and learn about Pokemon. Tournaments will be held occasionally

to see student skill levels. Requirements to Join: All students are welcome.

Prom--Sponsor: Jessica Stralkowski (B222)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to plan the Junior-Senior Prom. Requirements to Join: Any interested Juniors are welcome.

Rugby--Sponsor/Coach: Maj. John Farese (B124)/Jennifer Houston (B219)/Norma Kulseth (B123)/Diane McGee(H216)

Purpose/Mission of Club: To learn and participate in the sport of rugby and compete against other schools. Requirements to Join: Contact one of the sponsors for more information.

Sailing Club--Sponsor/Coach: Becky Bestoso (Sullivan's Island ES)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Wando Sailing Club is a co-ed two season sport with a fall and spring season. The club is divided

into Varsity and Junior Varsity. Requirements to Join: Crewing positions are open to all skill levels regardless of experience through a tryout system.

Shag Club—Sponsor: Debbie McCully (H109)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to teach the next generation the state dance—the Shag. Requirements to Join: Open to all students, no experience necessary.

Sports Gift Club—Sponsor: Kevin Sneed (B221)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of Sports Gift is to hold collections of new & gently used sports equipment in an effort to

donate the equipment to underprivileged children in the community. Requirements to Join: Open to all students.

Students in Action/Jefferson Society--Sponsors: Kevin Sneed (B221)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Jefferson Awards and Deloitte have joined hands to create a turnkey system in high schools to pass

the tradition of volunteering on to future generations. This unique program was created to instill the value of service, leadership and ethics while encouraging and rewarding student volunteer efforts.

Requirements to Join: The selection criteria for the national and local Jefferson Awards winners are parallel. There are two basic

considerations: Outstanding Personal Acts and Community Impact.

Surf Club—Sponsor: Allison Byrd (Guidance)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to surf, educate people on surfing, and gather Wando surfers. Requirements to Join: Open to all students.

Ukulele--Sponsor: Kirk Fischer (H212)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The mission of this club is to promote the playing of the ukulele. Requirements to Join: Students of every grade are welcome.

Vinyl Club—Sponsor: Henry Snyder (Guidance)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to introduce members to the world of vinyl, to facilitate the learning or

discussion of records, and to provide opportunities to visit record stores/expos. Requirements to Join: Open to all students.

Women of Wando (WOW)—Sponsor: Jeannie Fox (H117)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is provide students with the knowledge of current political, economic, and social

issues women face. Requirements to Join: Open to all students

Yo-Yo Club--Sponsor: Courtney Reece (F205)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The mission of this club is to spread the art of yo-yoing by teaching and performing. Requirements to Join: Open to all students with a yo-yo.

Younglife—Sponsor: Charles Coker (T20)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Younglife is a club concentrated on keeping high school students in their Christian faith. Younglife

enables a fun, easygoing way to feel comfortable in a large group of people and establish new relationships that help students get through their high school years.

Requirements to Join: Open to all students.

Co-Curricular Organizations

Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC)--Sponsors: Maj. John Farese (B126)/CMSgt. David Costa (B126)/MSgt. Mike Gardner (B126)

Purpose/Mission of Club: AFJRROTC consists of several organizations, including Color Guard, Drill Team, Honor Guard, Kitty

Hawk, Honor Society, Rocket Club, and Sabre Team. Requirements to Join: AFJROTC is reserved for JROTC cadets.

Art Club--Sponsor: Cheryl Clair (A104)/Dayna Kreider (T1)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club help raise an awareness of art and its connection to all parts of life or to

encourage the interests of artistic students. Requirements to Join: Students must be enrolled in art classes at Wando or have been in an art class at Wando.

DECA--Sponsor: Kirk Beilke (H134)

Purpose/Mission of Club: DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and

management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Requirement to Join:

Engineering Club--Sponsor: Kathryn Johnston (H129)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The Engineering Club is involved in competitions and special interest activities related to different fields

of engineering. Each year, students select the competitions and activities of their own interest. Requirements to Join: Interested students should contact Mr. Roemer in E-106.

Family, Community, and Career Leaders of America (FCCLA)--Sponsors: Bessie Allen-Holmes (B103)/Mary Carter (B110)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Involvement in FCCLA offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop

skills for life-planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making and inter-personal communication necessary in the home and the workplace.

Requirements to Join: Applications for all those interested can be picked up in August and January each year from any teacher in

the Family and Consumer Science Department. Students must be presently enrolled or have completed a course in Family and Consumer Sciences or Culinary Arts.

French Club--Sponsor: Stacy Attafi (B204)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of the French Club is to give students further exposure to French/francophone culture

outside of class and provide a setting for interaction with students in a fun yet educational environment after school. Requirements to Join: This club is open to students enrolled in any level French course.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)—Sponsor: Rachel Rutledge (H131)/Emily McNeeley (H126)

Purpose/Mission of Club: FBLA is a group of students whose purpose is to bring business and education together through

leadership and career development. Requirements to Join: This club is open to students interested in developing aggressive business leadership skills as well as

creating an understanding of American Business Enterprise.

Future Farmers of America (FFA)--Sponsor: Katherine Donohoe (T11)

Purpose/Mission of Club: FFA envisions a future in which all agricultural education students will discover their passion in life and

build on that insight to chart the course for their educations, career and personal future. Requirements to Join: FFA is geared to students in the Horticulture curriculum classes.

German Club--Sponsor: Stephanie Mignone (T13)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The German Club is open to any student interested in exploring German culture and participating in fun,

German-oriented activities. Requirements to Join: This club is open to Wando students who are interested in modern German culture.

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)--Sponsors: Amy Glenn (E105)/Catherine Lawson (H123) Club website

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of HOSA is to develop health-related leadership skills for students and to participate in

health-related community service. HOSA sponsors four blood drives during the school year. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all students.

Spanish Club--Sponsors: Caroline Mullinax (B225)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Through monthly meetings, students are encouraged to learn more about Hispanic culture. Students will

learn about Hispanic customs through guest speakers, and authentic activities (in a restaurant using the target language, learning to dance salsa and merengue, and preparing Hispanic recipes). Members of the Spanish Club are also encouraged to participate in philanthropic activities.

Requirements to Join: The Spanish Club is open to all students who have completed at least one unit of Spanish, are currently

enrolled in Spanish 1, or are enrolled in ESOL.

Theatre Club--Sponsor: Lori Carroll (A117)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Theatre Club is a venue for students who like to be on stage and those who like to work backstage.

Theatre Club members have the opportunity to participate in the annual school-wide lip sync competition, improv and audition workshops, and regional drama conventions. Members also provide cast and crew for mainstage productions and student showcases.

Requirements to Join: Theatre Club is open to all students, even those not currently taking a Drama class. Meeting information

and opportunities to help are posted regularly on the “callboard” outside A-117. Membership cost is $15 which includes a club t-shirt (scholarships are available).

Virtual Enterprise Club--Sponsor: Bonnie Killian (H124)/David Fralix (H124)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this club is to encourage the exchange of ideas among students in different sections of

VE at Wando and to encourage and promote participation in VE Trade Fairs and Competitions. Requirements to Join: This club is open to all Wando students who are currently enrolled in a VE class or who have taken a VE

class.

Honor Societies/Organizations

Beta Club --Sponsors: Melinda Summer (H214)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of the National Beta Club is to promote the ideals of character, service, and leadership

among secondary school students, to reward meritorious achievement, and to encourage and assist students in continuing their education after high school. Beta Club members complete 18 hours of community or school service each semester. Club projects vary depending on community events. Many students tutor for service hours.

Requirements to Join: Students have to be invited to join Beta Club. Students have to have an overall 4.0 average at the end of

their 9th

grade year and must have no discipline problems deemed unworthy of Beta Club members and school administration.

International Thespian Society--Sponsor: Lori Carroll (A117)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The International Thespian Society, a branch of the Educational Theatre Association, is the world's

largest honor society for theatre arts students. Its purpose is to advance the standard of excellence in theatre and encourage students to attain a better mastery of this art form.

Requirements to Join: All nominees for active membership of Wando's troupe #3654 must be enrolled in grades 9-12 at Wando,

participate in at least two full-length plays, and have earned a minimum of ten points (i.e., 100 hours of superior work with the drama department). Final troupe authority concerning membership is left to the discretion of the troupe sponsor. There are no annual fees for current members, but there is an initial fee for in-coming members of $22.00. This fee covers the cost of a one-year subscription to DRAMATICS magazine, a membership card and certificate, and continued eligibility for Thespian scholarship programs. Kitty Hawk Honor Society (AFJROTC)--Sponsors: Maj. John Farese (B126)/CMSgt. David Costa (B126)/MSgt. Mike Gardner (B126)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Kitty Hawk is an academic and community service honor society for qualifying AFJROTC cadets.

Requirements to Join: This is an honors organization and students have to be invited to join.

National Art Honor Society (NAHS)--Sponsors: Cheryl Clair (A104)/Dayna Kreider (T1)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The purpose of this chapter is to insure and recognize those students who have shown outstanding

ability in art. As members, they are expected to have a dedicated spirit in the pursuit of art, aid members in working toward the attainment of their highest potential in an art area, bring art to the attention of the school and community, and finally to further aesthetic awareness in all aspects of the school’s total program. Last year the NAHS worked countless hours on the musical: building props and painting and adding details to them. We made cookies for teacher appreciation week and planned an end-of-the-year art show as well as a fundraiser for the senior art club/NAHS members’ gift certificates and honor cords.

Requirements to Join: Students must be enrolled in art classes at Wando or have been in an art class at Wando. In addition those

students interested in being in an art club but who do not qualify for NAHS, may join us as art club members.

National Honor Society (NHS)--Sponsors: Kay Johnson (D202)/ Margaret Burwell (D201)/Nancy Ferrell (B218)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The NHS promotes service, leadership, and character. The NHS participates in different fundraisers to

raise money for scholarships for NHS members who have excelled in the mission of NHS. Students may find volunteer service hours on their own such as helping out a neighbor or volunteer church work. They may participate in organized volunteer activities such as the Water Missions Walk or Habitat for Humanity just to name a few. This past year our chapter project was to decorate the barn and grounds of Healing Farms for their Christmas Party which hosts up to 300 families who have members with disabilities.

Requirements to Join: NHS is an honors organization and students have to be invited to join.

National Latin Honor Society--Sponsor: Arnold Wagner (B214)

Purpose/Mission of Club: The goal of this organization is to promote the study of the classics. Students attend academic

competitions throughout the school year. We try to adopt a community service project; usually it’s a partnership with a downtown elementary school class.

Requirements to Join: This is an honor society and students are selected for membership based on Junior Classical League

Service and GPA. Please contact Mr. Wagner for more information.

National Math Honorary Society (Mu Alpha Theta)--Sponsors: Chris Holtzendorff (H220)

Purpose/Mission of Club: Mu Alpha Theta is "...dedicated to engendering keener interest in mathematics, the development of

strong scholarship in the subject and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics among high school and junior and community college students." The club requires all members to provide two hours of math tutoring per month. The club hosts the Wando ΜΑθ Math

Tournament (held in the spring) which is open to all South Carolina high schools. Requirements to Join: ΜΑθ is an honors society. We have membership drives in the fall and in the spring. Students should

contact their Honors Math teacher for more information.

National Technical Honor Society (NTHS)--Sponsor: Ray McGrath (H111)/Debbie McCully (H109)

Purpose/Mission of Club: National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) is a national honor society for students who actively

participate and promote excellence in Career and Technical Education courses at the secondary and post-secondary level. Requirements to Join: Students must hold and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 and a technical GPA of 3.25 to participate and

maintain their active status in the organization. Students must also be in good standing with the school’s code of conduct and discipline policies. Students will be nominated at the beginning of each academic school year. After they have received their nomination letter, students must fill out an application form and get at least one recommendation from a former CTE teacher and one recommendation from a former academic teacher. These recommendation forms must be turned into Ms. Greenberg prior to the application deadline.
