In March 2009, Mrs. Janie Sinacore-Jaberg, CEO of East Cooper Hospital, approached the visual art students at Wando about cre-ating artwork for the new East Cooper Hospital. She wanted the new facility to reflect the hospital’s com-mitment to Lowcountry resi-dents. Students were asked to create works that reflected the lowcountry and could be exhibited in a public setting. Twenty art students in Two-Dimensional Design II Hon-

ors developed artwork that reflected the low-country theme. The works were diverse in style and technique. Students worked for three weeks in a range of media, such as paint, pen and ink, watercolor, photogra-phy, and mixed-media to create finalized pieces. Miss Mary Catherine Middleton, art teacher at Wando, stated that “I wanted the students to work in a me-dia that best suited them. The students were required to visit local galleries and research regional artists to get an idea of the style East Cooper wanted.” In January of 2010, the stu-dent work was judged by a panel of professionals from the hospital as well as the inte-rior designer. Eight works were selected and are dis-played in various wings and rooms of the hospital. At the hospital opening, students were recognized for their

works and were able to tour the building to see the exhibi-tion of their final pieces. The students were instilled with a sense of pride and were hon-ored to be commissioned for this opportunity.

This semester, Olivia Bag-ley, a senior in Wando’s intern-ship class, has had the opportu-nity to work in the business world through an internship with UniMedia Solutions. Uni-Media Solutions is a video pro-duction company that provides visual communication for a range of clients, both locally and nationally. Through this internship, Olivia has been pro-

vided with real-world experience in the entertainment and technol-ogy industries. Olivia has worked in the office setting and on differ-ent locations during film days. She was recently on the set of two reality show film days. She helped set lighting for scenes and learned how to operate audio equipment. Following the film-ing, she learned how to edit foot-age to create a final product.

Olivia said that “Working at Uni-Media has a been a great way for me to get experience in the enter-tainment and technology industries and I am very thankful that Wando offers such great opportunities for its students.”

Why did you choose to take coursework in the Arts and Humanities? I chose coursework in the Arts and Hu-manities because I enjoy expressing my personality through dance movements. I love to be active and entertain an audience, and dance allows me to be active and have fun all at the same time. What are your plans for the future? I plan to go to college and study phar-macy. While I am in college, I will take some courses in the Arts and Humanities such as dance performance for my own enjoyment and course credit.

Percussion Students Perform to a Packed House

Each year Mr. Sean McGrew organizes an end-of-the-year percussion con-cert that integrates all arts disciplines within the show. This year, the show provided a diverse range of entertainment to a packed house of 900 students, par-ents, and community mem-bers. Performances in-cluded a unique twist to typical musical perform-ances. Here are a few of the highlights: 1. Wando graduate and local Latin singer, Leah Suarez, joined the Jazz Band for two songs. 2. Glow in the dark sticks provided the perfect visual representation of “Geometrics”.

3. Our newest ensemble, The Wando High School Steel Drum Band made its’ musical debut and received a standing ovation from the audience. 4. Hannah McDermott, a student artist in Advanced Placement drawing, cre-ated an oil painting live during the concert. The

landscape painting was auctioned off at the end of the show.

5. Ms. Ashley Webb’s 3-Dimensional Design art class created Udu Pots which were displayed on stage during the concert.

As a surprise element, per-cussion students used the pots as instruments during one of the songs. Using the pots as drums is a tradi-tion unique to the Igbo people in Africa. 6. Opera Singer, Dr. Jill Lewis, joined the percus-sion ensemble for an ar-

rangement of Dvorak’s Song to the Moon while Ms. Lori Carroll’s stage tech students created a light show that enhanced the beautiful melody of the song. 7. The Pinckney Orff Ensemble got a taste of performing on stage with the steel drum class. There ensemble stole the show!

8. Members of the Adande Drum and Dance Company joined 30 of our percussion students and 60 of Ms. Crum’s dance stu-dents for an African dance and drum blowout!

This concert demonstrates the power of working across disciplines to intro-duce students to think out-side of the box to create a unique performances.

Teacher of the Quarter

In the School of Arts and Humanities, it has become a tradition for teachers to nomi-nate a colleague within the Arts and Humanities for teacher of the quarter. This quarter, Mrs. Kathy Kinslow, chemistry teacher at Wando, selected Mrs. Margaret Bur-well as teacher of the quarter. Mrs. Burwell has been teaching at Wando for five years and currently teaches Biology 1, Applied Biology 2, and Anatomy and Physiology. She graduated from Winthrop with a BA in Biology and The Citadel with a M.A.T. in Biol-

ogy and Ed.S in Curriculum Development and Administra-tion. Mrs. Burwell has three children; Frank who works for the Army Corps of Engineers in Savannah, Martha who is finishing her second year in Nursing at USC, and Meredith who is a first year student at Savannah College of Art and Design. As a mother of three, Mrs. Burwell realizes the im-portance of differentiated instruction. So, when she was approached by Lori Carroll, theatre teacher, about doing something with her Applied

Biology 2 class on the topic of biodiversity, she was on board. Mrs. Carroll’s classes were writing scenes about diversity and felt that it could be a good tie with science concepts. Theatre students met with the biology students to explain how they created scenes that represented spe-cific themes about diversity. Then the biology students shared their knowledge of biodiversity in the world of science. This collaboration allowed students to be ex-posed to different disciplines and to see how concepts can overlap in different areas of

the school curriculum. Thank you Mrs. Burwell for your tire-less efforts to teach and engage students!

The Arts and Humanities globe is passed to Margaret Burwell.
