P R E S C H O O L SWell-rounded, nurturing, developmentally age-appropriateprograms and curriculums for young children ages 24 to60 months. We offer hands-on learning opportunities thatdevelop and expand social/emotional, physical, and cogni-tive capabilities through creative learning experiences.Group activities include the arts, with small focus groupsexploring pre-math, science, and early language/ literacyexperiences.

Heather Farm and Civic Park Preschools are now partof Civic Arts Education programming. Doug Rowe, CivicArts program supervisor, has been working with the teach-ing staff on this transition and will be supervising bothprograms as well as the Fine Arts Preschool at theShadelands Art Center. The unique qualities and teachingstaff of all three of these developmental programs willremain the same. Seahorse Ages 3y&OlderPrerequisite: Pass Starfish or ability to perform equivalent skills.Fundamental skill building class. Students must be comfortable withfloating on front and back with support and submerging head for atleast 5-10 seconds. Class objective: float without support and recov-er to a vertical position. Continue to work on kicking, arm strokes,and independence in shallow water.

Lobster Ages 4y&OlderPrerequisite: Pass Seahorse or ability to perform equivalent skills.Focus on unsupported front and back crawl skills. Students must beable to do front and back crawl strokes with support, 10 bobs, andfloat unsupported for at least 20 seconds. Class objective: introducestudents to the basics of elementary backstroke, diving into deepwater and treading water. Continue with front and back crawl.

Seal Ages 5y&OlderPrerequisite: Pass Lobster or ability to perform equivalent skills.Increase endurance of front and back crawl. Students must be ableto swim front and back crawl 15 yards, do 20 bobs, glide underwa-ter, and tread water for at least 45 seconds. Class objective: contin-ue with front and back crawl refinement, treading water and diving;introduction of breaststroke, and scissor kick.

Dolphin Ages 6y&OlderPrerequisite: Pass Seal or ability to perform equivalent skills. Strokerefinement, coordination and endurance. Students must be able toswim at least 25 yards of front and back crawl, 15 yards of elementarybackstroke and breaststroke kick, and tread water for 1 minute. Classobjective: continue stroke refinement and endurance. Introducebreaststroke arms, dolphin kick, open turns and more diving.

Teen/AdultAges 15y&OlderInstructors will work with students attheir own pace to develop basic swim-ming skills. Skills will include floating,kicking, freestyle and backstroke, andmore depending on individual skilllevel.

Youth Tennis (4-15 years old)Little Tennis & Sports Development Program:This specialized program is designed to stimulate, challenge and appeal tochildren 4 to 6 years old. A team of highly trained and motivated “teamleaders” will help provide a wonderful environment of intellectual and phys-ical intrigue. Students and parents alike will be impressed by the dynamicrange of learning aides and carefully designed development plans usedthroughout this program. Equipment can be purchased in the Heather ParkTennis Center Pro Shop.

Competition Programs:These year round programs are designed to prepare students for tennistournaments. Students learn from certified instructors and former touringpros with over 20 years of coaching experience. Contact Roy Cosio formore information at [email protected] .

Beginning, Adv. Beginning & Intermediate Levels:This three tiered introduction program is designed to develop early tennisskills that include stage 1, 2 and 3 balls, ground strokes (stationary and mov-ing), serving (1/2 and full motion), volleys, overheads, and basic vocabulary.Students are grouped by age and ability levels the 1st day of class. Classgoal: to maintain “full court” rallies and serve 1 of 3 balls into correct servicebox while using proper technique. Graduates are encouraged to join theBronze, Silver and Gold program.

Bronze, Silver &Gold Levels:For students who graduated from the Green, Blue & Red Level program orcan fulfill the program requirements. Students will learn topspin, under spinsidespin; add and reduce the power to shots, and develop specialty shots.Program drills enhance quickness, balance and racquet control forimproved consistency and accuracy. Class goal: Develop foundation tobecome a well-rounded tennis player, successfully play singles and doublesmatches, and to play in local tennis leagues, school teams or tournaments.

Bronze, Silver, &Gold LevelMatch Play:This is an enhancement program for students enrolled in a JuniorDevelopment group (Bronze, Silver, Gold). Players will challenge and com-pete against one another in weekly singles and doubles matches to improvetheir tennis skills. This program allows players the chance to utilize the skillslearned in the development classes.

Little Tennis &RallyerCamps:Specially designed tennis nets, racquets and low bouncing balls are used toprovide an enjoyable learning experience for younger players (4-6 years).

Several short breaks are taken so that students can regain energy (bring asnack) and cool down (ice water provided). Little Tennis students will learnto recognize, demonstrate and successfully hit the forehand, backhand andserve. They will learn parts of the racquet and court, and improve coordina-tion and motor skills (i.e. balancing, overhand throwing, catching, shuffling).Little Rallyers will work to improve their full court abilities through a series ofdrills and games.

Junior Improvement &MatchplayCamps:Students are grouped by age and ability levels on 1st day of class.Introductory students will learn and improve their forehand, backhand, vol-ley, overhead and serve through our unique “court rotation and activity sys-tem”. Intermediate and Junior Team students will develop specialty shotsand play in Singles and Doubles Round Robin Tournaments. The instruc-tor(s) will help players with scoring, rules and match strategy. Players shouldbring a snack; ice water is provided.

Adult Tennis (16 & Older)BeginningFor students with little or no previous tennis instruction. Students will beintroduced to forehand, backhand, serve, and basic vocabulary. Class goal:maintain a six-to-ten shot “short court” rally and serve an average of 1 out of3 balls into the correct service box.

Advanced BeginningFor students completing 10 or more hours of beginning tennis. In this level,we will be adding movement to groundstroke rallying and improving serv-ing technique. Class goal: maintain a full-court rally and serve an average of1 out of 2 balls into the correct service box.

Intermediate/AdvancedFor students who have completed 10-20 hours of advanced beginning ten-nis. Students will be introduced to volleys and overheads while improvingoverall confidence and consistency of forehand, backhand and serve.Added movement becomes a key component at this level. Class goal: to beable to play an actual singles or doubles match.

Drill ClassPrerequisite: Intermediate course or instructor approval. Workouts coverground strokes, volleys, overheads, and serving drills. A great class for thosewanting to move and hit lots of tennis balls.

Women’s Tennis AcademyThis innovative program is designed for 3.5 to 4.0 level players looking toimprove their results in interclub, USTA league/tournaments or just to fur-ther develop their game playing skills. Students will thrive in our rotatingcourt training system which has produced fantastic results throughout localand national junior competitions.

Specialized Recreation Saturday TripsSpecialized Recreation offers two Saturday excursions eachmonth. The purpose of each excursion is to provide theparticipant the opportunity for fun and adventure. We takethe opportunity to experience excursions like baseballgames (both Giants & A’s), overnight camping, kayaking,cross-country skiing, bowling, delta cruises, railroad rides,hiking and picnicking, fishing, swimming, WinchesterMystery House tours, museum tours, theme parks, livetheatre, roller skating, ice skating, Build-A-Bear, and a hostof others. We are constantly searching for new and excit-ing excursions to experience and enjoy.

All of our excursions are for special needs adults ages 16and above. Most excursions are limited to 20 participantsand are on a first-come/first-served basis.
