They stood and looked at the windows from the street but as one girl put it they saw: ―nothing beautiful in that! Just a lot of dirty glass.‖ An elderly woman overhe ard the remark and said to the girls: ―You can’t judge the beauty of an art -glass window from the outside. Why don’t you step inside?‖ The girls went inside and soon they were standing enthralled by the symphony of color which poured from the stained -glass window, and the absolute beauty of the art work. If we really want to know the beauty and power of God’s Word we need to ―go inside‖ the Word. Thee are many Bibles with beautiful bindings, but what is really most import is the beauty and power which our God has placed in the pages of Holy Scripture. I encourage you to begin the new ministry year with your brothers and sisters here at Faith Lutheran by taking the opportunity to study God’s Word together. The Psalmist said it well when speaking of God’s Word: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Ps 119:105) God bless you always, Pastor Schielke

A LIGHT ALONG THE WAY

Dear friends in Christ:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Ps 119:105)

With September we begin a new ―ministry year‖ here at Faith. Surely this will be an exciting year as we see our various ministries starting up again after the summer break, as we continue the search for a new pastor to shepherd our congregation, and as we welcome our winter members back. One of the most important programs we start up again is our Bible Study Program. A number of our home fellowship groups have continued to meet for fellowship and Bible Study. Hopefully a new home group (or two) will be starting up this fall in the Sugarmill Woods community. Our Tuesday afternoon Bible Study begins on Tuesday, September 15th and meets every Tuesday afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM. Our Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study will begin again on September 6th at 11:00 AM. On September 6th at the Bible Study time we will have the opportunity to see and discuss a video of our church body President’s, Dr. Gerald Kieschnick’s, presentation to all the District Conventions of Missouri Synod. We will also have a chance to look at a sample of the new Lutheran Study Bible, which will be available at Reformation time this year. Those who wish to order the Study Bible before it is published will have a significant savings, and information will be available at Bible Study explaining how to go about ordering your copy. Beginning September 13th our Sunday Morning Bible Study will be considering various Psalms. We will read and discuss one of 11 different Psalms each week. Surely Bible Study is one of the most important parts of our walk with Christ. Through His Word our Lord gives us support and courage as we face the opportunities and challenges of life as His people. Unfortunately, many never even look into the Bible, much less take time to study it. The story is told of two high school girls who were walking past a downtown church. They remembered how their art teacher mentioned the beautiful stained glass windows of that particular church. They stood and looked at the windows from the street but as one girl put it they saw: ―nothing beautiful in that! Just a lot of dirty glass.‖ An elderly woman overheard the remark and said to the girls: ―You can’t judge the beauty of an art-glass window from the outside. Why don’t you step inside?‖ The girls went inside and soon they were standing enthralled by the symphony of color which poured from the stained-glass window, and the absolute beauty of the art work. If we really want to know the beauty and power of God’s Word we need to ―go inside‖ the Word. Thee are many Bibles with beautiful bindings, but what is really most import is the beauty and power which our God has placed in the pages of Holy Scripture. To date we have received the following nominations: Rev. Louis Abel Jr. Faith Lutheran Church, Lecanto, FL Rev. Mark Borchert LCMS Concordia Plan Services, St. Louis, MO Rev. Michael Borgstede Mt. If you have any theologically acceptable reasons why any of the above should not be considered please contact me at (352) 527-9468 or anyone else on the call committee. The district will do their own assessment after studying our self-analyses (SET), questionnaire results and an updated demographic study. They most likely will add a number of additional candidates. Finally, they will provide back to us the completed list of candidates. Our counselor, Pastor Rockey will call each candidate and ask them one question…‖Is there any reason you cannot accept a call at this time‖ it is at this point that your call committee will begin the process of interviewing, ranking, etc. When this is done we will turn over the final list of candidates to you in a Call Service for election. I want to assure the congregation that their call committee is a spirit-filled, unbiased group of Christians who love their Lord and Church. TUESDAY AFTERNOON BIBLE STUDY We're gearing up to restart our 1 p.m. study of Romans on September 15. We have about half of that book left after which we'll consider suggestions for our next venture. We love having everyone visit our sessions and hope you'll find them

interesting. We're very casual and require no theological expertise nor homework. How can you beat that?! So

join us when you can and help us as we share our

experiences with God and fellow members.

OUTREACH OUR SEPT. MEETING WILL BE HELD THURSDAY THE 10TH. AT 1PM. PLEASE MAKE A NOTE SO YOU DONT FORGET. BRING SOME IDEAS WE CAN DISCUSS TO HELP GROW OUR CHURCH. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU

ALL AGAIN.

It is with much pleasure that the LOF announces to the congregation that over the past year-and-a-half through our Bazaars and Trash 'N Treasure sales and help from Thrivent Financial, we have attained most

of our financial goal. That goal, as voted by the membership, was New Flooring in the Fellowship Hall - tile in the eating and serving area and carpet in the All-Purpose room. Our Treasury report to date: $9500.00! With the approval of the Coun-cil on 8/19 consideration for 3 separate choices of tile and carpet were submitted for approval by the trustees. The LOF Board, in considering these choices, were concerned about safety and maintenance. Since we lack complete funding for this much-needed project at this point, we're asking for donations totaling $1500 from the congregation. The present carpeting is 15 years old. It is an eyesore and distasteful to many for an eating area. We wish to complete this project by this Fall. Please consider this request prayerfully. We, as always, are grateful and appreciative of your support for Faith Lutheran Church -

YOUR CHURCH. If you'd like to help, please place your contribution in an envelope marked LOF. Thank you, LOF Board

Youth Corner:

How can you assist in the Youth Ministry at Faith Lutheran? Through prayers and gifts - read on!

What an interesting August it has been for the Youth Ministry. Just when I feel that my wheels are just spinning and goals aren’t being accomplished the Lord reminded me of what the ―Big Picture‖ is. If you recall from last month, I mentioned about the ―Big Picture‖ being the growth of the Kingdom of God and through the Holy Spirit I was able to be a part of the ―Big Picture‖. The Lord has put me in a position this last month to minister directly to some unchurched children and young adults. Perhaps you have seen them attending church with me the past weeks. It’s difficult to describe the feeling you get when a young person asks questions about the church and Jesus and then after you answer their question the light goes on and they get it.

In other news; I’ve been able to present some ideas for youth ministry this last month to men’s club, outreach, and church council. Unfortunately space does not allow me to present these ideas here, but I would like to eventually get together with our parents, youth, and congregation to present these ideas. Now that school has started and we get back to our routines I ask for parents and guardians to contact me with a good time to meet individually. I believe this will give us both an opportunity to get to know each other and share what we both are looking for in a Youth Ministry program.

I am so fortunate to belong to such a caring and spiritual congregation. In the past many members have said that they would financially support a Youth Program if there ever was to be a ministry created. I believe that we are entering that point in time and I hope that you feel the same. Any monetary start up donation would be appreciated. These funds would be used to help underprivileged youth to attend retreats, as well as helping out with materials for Fellowship and Games. Your donation can be accepted during our giving to Our Lord and by writing ―Youth‖ on your envelope or check.

THANKS to Dennis Jones for all his labor in trimming the trees. Looks great. Right?

Choir Practice

It’s that time again. Choir practice has started and we would like to see you on Wednesdays at 7:00. It doesn’t matter if you are a church member, snowbird, or frequent visitor to Faith, you are welcome. You don’t have to be a soloist or even read music to join us. You just need the feeling of joy you have from singing to the Glory of God. So mark your calendars and plan to join us each Wednesday and the first three Sundays of the month.

Ladies of Faith: HI AND GREETINGS TO ALL: Summer was too short! We did not complete all of our personal objectives---How about you?

However, starting Wednesday, September 2nd, at 1:00 pm, we will again start the monthly first Wednesday meetings of the Ladies of Faith---Will you please remember to be present? We look forward to seeing you and appreciate your attendance. If you had signed up for refreshments in September—would you please call Carol Clayton—527-2809, and let her know. Thanks!

This is an important meeting, since we will be voting on our Mission Giving for the year, our work schedules to attain these Mission Goals, and we require input from every member—that means You and You!

Thanks Ladies and let us begin anew—we’ll be glad to see EVERY ONE OF YOU.

September 28th – 20th Sunday after Pentecost Philippians 2:1-4, 14-18: Good stewards are those who look not only to their own interests, but also to the interests of others. To do this well requires a spirit of humility, compassion and kindness. Doing these good things without complaining makes us shine like stars in a darkened and sinful world.

Businesses that transact commerce on the Internet soon discover some of the advantages of doing business via this electronic medium. One is the ability to open a “store” without spending money on “bricks and mortar.” Another is the size of the “community.” An estimated 200,000,000 a day turn to the internet to find what they are looking for.

Making our Church’s services available to someone that might be looking for or in need of what we can offer, give us a new mission opportunity. While the website is a great way for our own members to keep informed or to visit a missed service, it can also give us an opportunity to share our service with a family member or friend living in another state or even elsewhere in the world. If you want to share a particular sermon or lesson with someone you know, you can send a link by email or if you don’t spend time on a computer, you can mail them a letter with our URL (website address). That is it at the top of this column.

How many people see the website? Well here are the page-view numbers so far this year… January 408 February 404 March 658 April 721 May 702 June 491 July 554 August 868 If you need assistance in learning how to send a link or how to access any part of our website, call Dave Trumbauer at 382-3655.

Operation

Shoebox

For whatever reason, you hear less these days about our troops and the fact that they are still on the job, far from home, away from their families. You can be sure that they still need the little things that we have been able to send in our boxes. The number of boxes we are sending are really down in numbers. If we care about these folks and the job they are doing for their country and for us, consider bringing some items from the list and leave them in

the Fellowship Hall.

FELLOW-

SHIP

With Summer coming to a close and many of our members returning from their vacations, we need to address the fellowship program for the months starting in September. New sign up sheets are available at the fellowship meetings. The great news is the size of the group just keeps growing. We are delighted with the number of members that continue to join us each Sunday morning. Because of the growing number we have a growing requirement for even more treats. We think that we can solve this by asking you to sign up as two person teams. If you haven’t signed up before, consider doing so (along with a friend) this year. We thank those who have in the past worked so hard to keep the treats coming...Let’s all help by

signing up for a week or two!

In September we observe Labor Day, a legal holiday in honor of labor. The Bible deals with labor in a variety of ways. In Genesis 2:15 we read that “The Lord God took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (NIV) It was part of God’s plan of creation to make human beings for work and provide work for them.

Work is important for us. It is important enough that we often answer questions like who or what we are by referring to our work. We may answer in a number of different ways like I’m a teacher, or a plumber, or a carpenter, or an office manager, or a business owner, or a pastor, or a doctor, or one of many other vocations. No wonder people get depressed when they are without jobs and meaningful work to do. Much of our self esteem is tied in closely with our work.

As God’s redeemed stewards we recognize that God has entrusted to us many things to manage and work with according to His will and plan. To not be willing to work and still expect to receive good things is like stealing. Ephesians 4:28 says, “He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.” (NIV)

Honest labor provides us with a sense of fulfillment and provides for our own needs and something extra to share with others who are in need. The book of Ecclesiastes includes a number of passages like 2:24; 3:12-13; 22; 5:18-20 that encourage us to find joy in our work. Work is a blessing from God and He gives us the time, talent and resources to do our work in a way that honors God and blesses others as well as ourselves. The words of Hebrews 13:20-21 affirm this truth: “May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (NIV)

So this September as many things like vacations are over and new things start up again—school, mission and ministry efforts in our congregations as well as other September activities—let’s remember that with the power of the Holy Spirit we can live and work as God’s redeemed stewards who freely and joyfully manage all of life and life’s resources for His purposes. May we always be encouraged to give our very best when it comes to our financial gifts of love, our use of time and talents, and our willing service at home, in the workplace, in our communities and in our congregations. Pat Keller

So have you heard the buzz from those in our family that have "unwrapped" their Spiritual Gifts? Over thirty of us have discovered our gifts to be used in ministry for the Kingdom of God. Yes, even in retirement our gifts are to be used in growing the Kingdom and caring for the Body of Christ! If you are curious about your gifts from your Maker or if you are married to someone who has already unwrapped theirs - now is the time! Another class will be offered toward the end of September! We have been having the class on two consecutive Saturdays from nine in the morning until one in the afternoon - that way we only have to schedule two classes instead of four or eight sessions! Please let me know soon if you are ready to discover, develop and deploy those gifts that God has given you! Remember, it is what He has called us to do while we are here on earth. Call me (Pat Keller) at 746-3032 with any questions or to schedule a seat in an upcoming class. We want everyone to be a ready disciple for Christ here at Faith, in our families and in our community!

♫ Special Music ♫ We have been blessed by the special music this summer from our members, families, and friends. The music has truly added the amen to the Pastor’s message each week. A special ―thank you‖ to Steve Johnson, Jacki Doxey, Ralph Shafer, Ron Dykes, the Stucky grandchildren (Ashlyn, Taylor, Wyatt and Morgan), Rachel Fanganiello, Kim Bush, Mary Mahoney, Shirley Janisko, Dorothy Abel, Gloria Schultz, Garth Rydland, Larry Jamieson, Ray Chirayath, Mike Tranchida, Bill Fick, Elsie and Gust Cougias, Karen and Willie LaCroix, Norm and Ruth Schmidt, Mike and Pat Keller, Ed Stern, Kevin Belfry, and Pastor Schielke.

The Stitch and Tie group meet every Friday from 9 AM to Noon. We are currently working on charity quilts for various charities in the community. We have material for you to work up a quilt. We will teach you how to tie a quilt. We still are in need of newer sewing machines. If you have one available, please drop it off at the

recreation center. We enjoy coffee break and the various bakery items the women bring. We have a nice group of women presently and could always use more. Betty Nelson is our fearless leader. Submitted by Hilda Weaver

WHAT IS THE MEANING AND USE OF LITURGICAL COLORS?

In the Christian tradition colors are used for vestments and paraments, but a unified system of colors developed only gradual ly and haphazardly until and through the Middle Ages. Today, the Lutheran Church in America provides a system of colors for use by its congregations; for the most part, the same system is also used by Roman and Anglican churches, at least in the United States; and by many churches around the world The colors serve to adorn the worship space, and to call attention to the nature of the season or festival being celebrated. A brief summary of their usage, according to the church year, follows.

Advent: Blue is used for its references to hope. It originated in Scandinavia, probably because purple dye was too expensive for churches to use. The alternate color for Advent is purple, the royal color of the coming King (note that this is a different meaning than when it is used in Lent; see below). Christmas, Epiphany of Our Lord, Baptism of Our Lord, Transfiguration of Our Lord: White is used, as a reference to the purity of the newborn Christ, and to our light and joy in him. Sundays after the Epiphany: Green is used for its symbolism of our growth in Christ. Green, in a sense, is a "neutral color," used when more festive or more somber color is not appointed. Ash Wednesday: Black is the preferred color, since it is the color of the ashes to which we will all return. Purple is the alternate color for this first day of Lent. Lent: Purple is indicated, as the stark color of repentance and solemnity. Sunday of the Passion: Scarlet is the preferred color of this first day of Holy Week, as it suggests the deep color of blood. (Scarlet is to be distinguished from the brighter color of red, which is appointed for the Day of Pentecost, martyrs’ days, and certain church celebrations). If a parish does not have scarlet vestments, purple may be used. Days of Holy Week: Scarlet or purple may be used for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holy Week. Maundy Thursday: For this fourth day of Holy Week, celebrated as the institution of the Lord’s Supper, scarlet or white is used. Good Friday: No vestments or paraments are used on this day, after the stripping of the altar on Maundy Thursday night. Vigil of Easter, Sundays of Easter: White as the color of joy in the Resurrection is used. Easter Day: On this one day of the church year, gold may be used. White is the alternate, perhaps with gold running through it. The gold color indicates that this day is the "queen of feasts," unique in the entire church year. Day of Pentecost: Red as the color of fire is used on this day when we remember the tongues of fire descended on the crowd in Jerusalem. In contrast to the color of scarlet, Pentecost’s red is a bright color. The Holy Trinity: White is appointed, the expression of joy in the mystery of the Triune God. Other Sundays after Pentecost: Green is used, to indicate our growth in faith as we follow the teachings and ministry of Christ. Christ the King: The final day of the church year uses white, a festive color of light, joy, and the celebration of our Lord.

ELDER MUSINGS by Gus Krayer

As Summer days come to an end, many look forward to Labor Day, cooler days, and the start of the Fall Season.

This is a time of renewed commitments to organizations and personal goals, like education, physical fitness, clubs and other activities. Have we overlooked renewing our commitments to our spiritual well being and to helping meet our church's needs?

Some of us have experienced set-backs, illness, or surgical procedures over the summer, and are now at less than full efficiency. I pray for their quick recovery, and that the rest of us are ready to meet the challenges we will face. Are you well rested and ready to resume serving the Lord in His House and in the community?

This Summer the Elders continued visiting the sick, hospitalized, shut-ins and others while also assisting Pastor at Communion and performing other church-related functions, like meeting and greeting people as they arrive for worship services. Now that Summer is over, the Elders are also resuming their monthly meeting schedule on the 2nd Thursday of each month, at 7:00 PM; the next meeting will be on September 10th.

Please, always feel free to seek out your Elder to speak with him -- he wants to know you better and to answer any questions you may have regarding the church, its activities, or other matters that concern you. It is the Elders' privilege to assist Pastor in his ministry among our members!

Please, keep our Church in your prayers! May God bless you and yours!
