Paul’sRamblings

> Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President

Welcome to the March edition of theWagensville News.

As I write this month’s ramblings all themembers and friends who attended theKennett River weekend are still on a highafter having a wonderful time. UnfortunatelyI could not attend and it sounds like I misseda great event. I must thank the organisersfor the event - Cheryl and the Ermelboys, for their excellent work andto all the others whohelped over the weekend. I understand that approx-imately 80 people attend-ed, which is a fantasticresponse. The Club alsothanks the proprietors ofthe Kennett RiverCaravan Park for all theirassistance over theweekend and their supportof the ‘Club Site’ which wasprovided free of charge. They havealso passed on a very special thanksto all Club members and their guestswho attended, for their excellent behaviourand helpful attitude over the weekend.

It appears that there is a growing inter-est in the ‘Club’s’ events this year, as wehad approximately 60 cars turn up to thePicnic at Hanging Rock on the 12th ofFebruary. We were one of the best repre-sented car clubs on the day. The weatherwas excellent, and the barbecue provided bythe Club was well organised by Cheryl,Andrew and Stuart Ermel, with many Club

members jumping in and assisting with thecatering and cooking. Thanks to all whohelped.

It was good to see so many VWs presenton the day, as the event seems to be attract-ing an increasing number of American carsand less European marques.

Other news for the month is the continu-ing use of the Club’s data projector at the

general meetings, which is providingan educational aspect to our

meetings by showing histori-cal Volkswagen DVDs.

In fact, some of ourmembers who have oldVHS tapes are havingthem copied on to DVD,so it appears that wehave many more informa-tive DVDs to come. Sodon’t forget our meetingson the third Tuesday ofthe month at the RACVClub. At the next meeting

on the 21st of March we will bepresenting the Club trophies for 2005.

The Club’s web site www.vwclub.com.auis receiving many hits requesting membershipinformation and e-mail questions for informa-tion on VW. The Club’s web master DavidHolinger is currently upgrading the site tomake it more user friendly and easier toupdate. I expect that this should be opera-tional within the month so keep visiting thesite. We also welcome any suggestions onhow it can be improved.

Another reminder that John Stevens hasarranged the General Meeting in April atRay’s Outdoors at Nunawading, where thestore will stay open for us from 7.30pm to9.30pm. They will be offering HUGEdiscounts on outdoor gear which will be ofspecial interest to members, and in particu-lar to those going on the central Australiantrip. However, the date of the meeting hashad to be changed to Tuesday the 11th ofApril - so please don’t forget to change thedate in your diaries.

For all those members who are not goingto the closing ceremony of theCommonwealth Games, Sunday the 26th ofMarch is the VW Cruisers Jamboree at theCaribbean Gardens, Scoresby. Once againthe event is being organised by AnthonySurie and will be sponsored by VollkommenArt. But wait - there’s more! In addition tothe Jamboree, Vollkommen Art will beopening their workshop at 7pm on Fridaythe 24th and will provide a barbecue for allthose hungry people who attend, while onthe Saturday night a Chapel Street Cruisehas been organised and willcommence at the park inAlexandra Avenue opposite ComoPark - with the cruise going to theGerman Club Tivoli on DandenongRoad in Prahran.

I’ll see you at the generalmeeting on Tuesday 21st March. •

Electronsin the Car

> Everything you wanted to know about your car’s electrics by Bernd Wachs...

ELECTRON's topic for this month is wire.Wire, for those who don’t know what it is, arethose long bits of coloured spaghetti lookingstuff that runs around in the body of the carwhich interconnects a lot of electrical gizmossuch as lights, switches, ignition coils, battery, alternator etc.

The job of the wire is to guide electricalenergy to various devices in the car to enablethem to perform special jobs such as beingconverted to light in light bulbs, being convert-ed to a spark to ignite petrol / gas vapour, which is then converted to mechanical energywhich makes the car move. Wire is mainlymade from copper and comes in differentthicknesses, depending on the amount ofcurrent (electrons) that are required to betransported from A to B. For example, theinternal light usually requires a small wire (sizeof spaghetti) whilst the cable running betweenthe battery and the starter motor is usually a large wire (size of the average garden hose). There can be up to about 2 kilometres of cablein some modern cars.

In some auto stores wire is sold on smallreels with the words "mm in diameter" or "8 amp (current) rating" marked on them. This information is not necessarily correctwhen choosing cable, unless you know that ithas been produced and marked by a reputablecable maker. Usually when they talk aboutdiameter they talk about the overall diameterwhich includes the insulation, or they say it is8 amp or 16 amp rated wire. However, whenyou take a good look at it you will notice thatthe insulation is thicker on the 16 amp ratedcable, but the actual diameter of wire is notappropriately thicker when compared to the 8amp wire. The correct way of describing wirecurrent handling capacity is related to theactual wire area (diameter) square millimetre

(metric) or AWG (American Wire Gauge). Thecorrect diameter choice requires you to knowthe current needed, length and voltage drop(loss) permitted. I will discuss this in moredetail next month.

Component of the MonthEach month I will describe in basic terms theoperation of an electronic component so thatyou have a better understanding on thecomplexities of car electronics. The compo-nent for this moth is called a "diode.” Themain purpose of a diode is to allow the flow ofelectrical current in one direction only. This ishandy if you want to allow current generatedfrom a number of different places to a singlepoint but not to another place.

Diodes come in different shapes and sizes. The symbol and direction of current in a diodeare shown below.

The basic marking line around a cylindricalshaped diode indicates that it is the cathode, the other being the anode. Diodes which arenot cylindrical will require a check with themanufacturer to know which end is which.Below are some examples of these. •

For some people, regular Porsches aren'tfast enough, which is why cars like this areborn. The Porsche GT3 is a high-powered,lightweight version of the 911 that deliverseven more grunt for those with a need forspeed.

The new GT3 is due to arrive inAustralian showrooms in August, just threemonths after it is planned to go on sale inGermany. The price: $253,200. Only 50 willbe imported each year.

The GT3 was unveiled at last week'sGeneva motor show with the fifth-genera-tion 911 Turbo. The new car continues anillustrious tradition of race-bred Porschemodels and it uses a reworked version of itspredecessor's naturally-aspired 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine tuned to deliver a massive309kW.

Like earlier GT3 models, the new one has been creat-ed to support Porsche'ssports car race program. It homologates new mechani-cal and aerodynamic compo-nents to meet the latest FIAGT sports car regulations.

However, it's no bare-as-bones special. After listeningto buyer demands, Porschehas poured greater levels ofstandard equipment andcomfort into the new car.Careful consideration toweight has seen it rise only

slightly above that of its predecessor. As these first official photographs

reveal, the new GT3 is distinguished fromlesser 911 models by a new body kit honedfor aerodynamic efficiency in Porsche'sStuttgart-based wind tunnel.

It includes a complex front bumper thatprovides increased cooling for the front-mounted radiators, a prominent two-wingspoiler, centrally mounted tailpipes anda new rear bumper designed to draw hot airaway from the rear-mounted engine. A lowered ride height and 19-inch alloywheels add a menacing touch to the appearance.

Inside, it has the latest 911's dashboardand interior trim. There's a thick steeringwheel and gear lever - both covered inAlcantara, along with warning lights toindicate the optimum gearshift point.

Two versions of the GT3 are planned: a standard model with comfort seats and anentertainment system as well as a circuit-orientated Clubsport model with hard shell-seats, six point harnesses, lightened doortrims, a bolt-in rollcage, fire extinguisherand a battery cut out.

At 1395kg, the new GT3 weighs 15kgmore than its predecessor. This translates toa weight to power weight ratio of just4.57kg/kW and, according to Porsche's ownacceleration figures, a 0-100kmh time of 4.3seconds - half a second quicker than the oldGT3. A more telling indication of itsperformance, however, is the 0-160kmh timeof just 8.7 seconds and 310kmh top speed, bettering the old model by 0.6 seconds and 8kmh.

Drive is sent to the rear wheels via aclose-ratio six-speed manual gearbox with

slightly shorter travel than in the standard911 and a fully mechanical limited slipdifferential. Underpinning it all is a heavilyupgraded McPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear) suspension fitted for the first timewith Porsche Active SuspensionManagement.

It gives the choice between two dampersettings. The standard one closely matchesthe previous model's; the sport mode istuned to deliver greater bodycontrol and a more responsivethrottle action. There's also aswitchable traction control devicewith so-called traction-slip anddrag torque control functionsfrom the Carrera GT, soon-to-be-discontinued. •

VW Biwak > ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ - 3/2006

This is one of those cars thatmakes you stop and say:"Why didn't I think of that?" Thankfully there are compa-nies such as German designhouse EDAG to have theseideas for us. To create theBiwak, it took a regularVolkswagen Beetle and fitteda wagon roof to it to createmore interior space forcommercial or family use, although the rough andready high-riding stance isintended to give the car a workhorse look.EDAG did this experiment on its own and has prepared the business case for VW should thecompany want to build it (fingers crossed). Best of all, you don't have to worry about getting a scratch on it: the Biwak is deliberately covered in "scratches" thanks to a cracked paint-stylesurface. "The crinkle finish lends itself to a used look.We are giving the customer the freedom to make full use of the vehicle, dispelling his or herworries about that first, inevitable scratch in the paintwork," says the company PR blurb."It's just one example of how colour and trim can be employed as marketing instruments." •

General MeetingMini Auctions

> By Andrew Ermel

Every General Meeting from now on willfeature a ‘mini’ auction after the first break. Those who came to the last GeneralMeeting had the opportunity to buy somevery desirable VW bits and pieces on offer. These items included an oval Beetle steer-ing wheel, hard to obtain books, car modelsand some rare memorabilia.

The idea of the mini auction is to giveyou the opportunity to sell items to clubmembers rather than having to advertisethem. You can view the items during thebreak and speak to the potential sellers andbuyers. Because it is an auction, it giveseveryone a fair go at buyingitems. Also the club benefits ifthe item exceeds the seller’sreserve price.

How does it work?If you have any bits and piecesthat you want to sell, bringthem along to the generalmeeting. The items must besmall enough to be carried, reasonable condition and aboveall, clean. There will be amaximum of six items per miniauction. If more than six itemsare to be auctioned, the auction will belimited to one item per seller. You set theprice you want for the item, and thisbecomes the reserve - and what you receivefrom the sale. The item is then auctioned tothe members during the meeting. If the itemfails to reach the reserve, it is withdrawn

from sale. If the itemexceeds the reserve price, you get the reserve amountand the club get the remain-der as a form of a donation. Also you may havesomething of value that youwish to donate to the clubfor auction, andthe club would bemost appreciative.

So get those surplus itemsand make yourself some money.Remember the items can be ofanything of interest to other clubmembers. •

Kennett RiverWeekend

> By Matt Kinsey

The VWCV held its annual camping trip toKennett River over the weekend of March3rd to 5th. Each year this event seems to getmore and more popular, with nearly 80people rocking up with their VWs this year.It was really a weekend to chill out - peoplecould come and go as they pleased. Theweather was spectacular - we spent manyhours at the beach (in the water too!). It wasamazing to see virtually everybody in thesurf with their body boards.

Unlike previous years, everybody did notcruise down the Great Ocean Road in onelarge group. Many people were keen to getto Kennett River as early as possible, withsome people arriving Thursday, most onFriday, and a few on Saturday. The VWCVrepresented at least half the campers in thecaravan park.

The Kennett River Caravan Park was avery lush and serene place to camp, withlots of wildlife. There were heaps ofpossums, ducks and a few randy koalas whokept some people on their toes during thenight. Most people opted for camping intents, while a small number had cabins.

On Saturday morning a small contingentheaded up to Apollo Bay to get some break-fast (and real coffee) and to buy somesupplies for lunch and dinner, as well asvisiting the local Saturday market.

Saturday night was glow-worm night. Many of us packed into Red Bus and thehigh roof Kombi for the trek up into theOtways to check out the glow worms. The road up into the National Park was a

little more off-road than I imagined, but theKombis handled the treacherous road withno problems.

As usual with these events, an excellentlevel of catering was provided by the Club -with lunch and dinner on the Saturday beingprovided, as well as breakfast on the Sundaymorning. A huge variety of food was on offer- it was much more than just a sausage in apiece of bread! Special thanks should go tothe Ermels and in particular Cheryl for theiroutstanding efforts over the weekend inmaking this possible (as well as the manyother members who pitched inand helped out with the servingof the food).

Thanks should also go to theKennett River Caravan Park fortheir excellent hospitality over theweekend. •
