Though it was extraordinarily windy and our supplies

wanted to take flight prior to being assembled into a kite, our dedicated volunteers managed to hold the supplies in place while 64 children made their kites at the Miami County Harvest Moon and Balloon Fest 2014.

On Thursday night, October 16th, James “Pee Wee” Martin, made famous by the HBO mini-series, “Band of Brothers,” spoke as part of the WACO Aviation Lecture Series. WACO Historical Society, along with Troy Christian High School, co-hosted this lecture at the Troy Christian High School due to the size of the event. Nearly 300 people, from high school history students in their teens to other WWII veterans in their 90’s, came to meet this incredible man.

Jim Martin was in the 101st Airborne Division, with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company G. He parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He fought there for thirty-three days until the 101st Airborne was relieved. Amazingly, at age 93, on June 6, 2014, the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Jim Martin once again jumped over Normand and landed safely behind Utah Beach just as he had done in 1944. A Go Pro Camera made it possible for all present to

relive this moment with Jim during his presentation. The audio visual presentation was very moving.

In November, the lecture series invites comedy to take the stage. The Thursday night, November 13th lecture will be presented by Danny Mortensen, former air traffic controller. Danny Mortensen is a pilot, author, airline instructor, world record holder, former air traffic controller, aircraft builder, and test pilot. He currently flies a restored 1940 cabin Waco, VKS-7. Laughter is an expected part of this evening as Danny shares his topic “Confessions of an Ex-Air Traffic Controller: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Airport.” These humorous stories will come from misadventures over his 48 years of aviation.

Wrapping up 2014 will be Tony Miltenberger. Tony is a sixteen year Army Reserve veteran with deployments in support of missions in the Balkans, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Strong Bonds reintegration retreats. In addition to his work with the Army Reserve, Tony and Chaplain (LTC) Charles Causey published Unbreakable (Abingdon Press) in mid-2014. Unbreakable is a marriage workbook designed to help warriors and civilians deal with the realities of a life-long commitment. Tony blogs frequently at twmilt.com.

Often times when a warrior comes home the world is different. The people, places, and things that they grew up with don’t look the same as it did when they left. Far too often the space that they called home doesn’t feel safe anymore. Navigating those relationships and creating systems where the warrior feels whole again can be a daunting task. Join us on December 4th as Pastor and Army Reserve Chaplain’s Assistant Tony Miltenberger talks about stories, tools, and techniques for creating engaging relationships with those who have been away. Grab a friend and come hear “When a Warrior Comes Home.”

We are sad to report deaths the following friends of WACO:

Charlie Sell – Tipp City, William Jordan – Troy, Jim Wheeler – Knox, IN

Gone West… James F. “Jim” Wheeler

1932-2014Jim began his military and aviation careers as a Naval Aviation Cadet with class 40-53. In 1966 he joined American Airlines retiring as Captain in 1992. Most recently known as the owner/pilot/caretaker of ZQC-6 NC16203 he and Gail have been active in the WACO community since 1968. They were also supporters of the WHS and rarely missed a fly in. Jim claimed that he became a Naval Aviator to avoid the draft but what he found was a lifelong fascina-tion with all things flying. He also claimed “I never worked a day in my life. I always had an airplane to fly and they actually paid me to do it!”

A very humble man, he didn’t boast about his accomplishments or how good he was. After you got to know him, you saw it though, and were inspired to re-set your own personal standards higher.

This is the kind of friend that he was as well. One who inspired you to be better just because he was so darned good at it! Jim would do anything for a friend and expected nothing in return. Jim and Gail were good friends to many in all aspects of their lives. As his friends, we should all celebrate and be inspired by a life so well lived!

Blue skies, tailwinds and Godspeed Jim!

The Waco RC Barnstormers had their annual Fly-In on Saturday September 20, 2014. The weather was nice but breezy. There were 17 registered pilots and many spectators all day long. Numerous types of planes flew throughout the day from electrics, large scale gas, glow, a turbine jet as well as a helicopter. Pilots also came from various other RC clubs in the surrounding area. A 50/50 raffle and other RC raffle items helped to earn money for the club. Everybody had a good time flying as well as talking to other pilots and spectators. Sean Saddler wowed the crowd with his turbine jet as he did some awesome high speed low passes. Many other pilots impressed the crowd with their 3D capabilities. Jimmy DeWinter took time to make small planes out of styrofoam plates that the kids could play with while they were there. Hot dogs and hamburgers were grilled for lunch with chips, pop and water available for a donation. As the day progressed the wind started gusting up well over 20 m.p.h. but that did not stop the flying as pilots flew all day long. Thanks to all the Barnstormer members who helped make this another successful Fly-In. Thanks to Jimmy DeWinter for being our Contest Director.

rc Fly-In 2014Our robotics program is in full swing. After a long waiting list in 2013, we added a second week of robotics camp. Both weeks of camp took place at the end of July. Each week is run by volunteers: our FLL and FTC coaches, as well as older teen mentors from our State Championship FTC team. Each week of camp was full with 16 students. 2 students worked jointly to build one of our 8 existing LEGO robots at that time. With the Learning Center laptop, and 3 additional borrowed laptops, a temporary “lab” was set up. 4 students were able to share each laptop as the instructors taught them to program the robots to complete certain tasks. Some robots used a color sensor, while others used the touch sensor or the gyro sensor. Friends and family had the opportunity to see the robots in action at the closing ceremony of camp. The guests were also given a tour of the WACO museum and invited to participate on one of the fall robotics teams.August was an exciting month as we added 10 newly purchased robots, 9 new coaches, and one new FLL team to our existing robotics platform! A coach’s clinic was held to train both new and seasoned coaches on our EV3 robots that were purchased with grant monies. In the way of background, FIRST Founder Dean Kamen and the LEGO Group’s Kjeld

rObOtIcs PrOgrAM by Nancy Royer, Learning Center Director

Kirk Kristiansen joined forces back in 1988 to create FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a powerful program that engages children in playful and meaningful learning while helping them discover the fun in science and technology through the FIRST Experience. Dean and Kjeld have a shared belief that FLL inspires teams to research, build, and experiment, and by doing so, they live the entire process of creating ideas, solving problems, and overcoming obstacles, while gaining confidence in their abilities to positively use technology. As the Learning Center Director at WACO, I can

say I have seen children thrive in this setting, who may have previously felt awkward and out of place in schools where the talents of the athletes or musicians are elevated, but students with other interests may go unnoticed and their achievements, uncelebrated. Encouraging these young people to explore the areas of science and technology through participation on a FLL or FTC team has given them a newfound sense of belonging, value, and confidence to continue to find solutions to some of today’s problems.

In September, these excited young minds gathered on their newly formed teams for the unveiling of the 2014-2015 FIRST Challenge, which has “Learning Unleashed” as the theme. They are currently working to prepare for the upcoming December competition by designing, building and programming a robot to complete tasks on the playing field (left), and by inventing something to aid children in learning. I cannot yet reveal their amazing ideas! Our high school, 2014 State Championship FTC Team, have added an assistant coach and several new team members. Some of the retiring team members have now become college mentors for this team. They have their eyes set on going back to the World Championship in 2015. They, too, received a new field kit (below) and traveling bags in which to carry the kit. This is a much more portable option over last year’s homemade plywood field. Once again, this was made possible by your donation and support. This team continues to go out to schools and libraries, demonstrating their robot and inspiring other children to dream, learn, and create.

I look forward to reporting more news of our teams after our year end competitions. Feel free to call with any questions or to set up a visit to observe one of our teams.
