Interview of Grandfather• 1. Are you concerned about your general

health? At 84 yrs, you betcha! I am trying to make 100!

• 2. If yes, what things are you concerned about?

• I was told I was a TYPE 2 diabetic as my blood sugar was 140 mg/dl in 2003. (Since then the Standard was lowered to 130.) Controlling the number is a matter of DIET and EXERCISE. The Doc had me take a small dose of Glyburide daily. This signals my pancreas to release more insulin, which controls carbs and stuff. I am on a

240-gram daily diet, which I stay close to. I don’t worry about calories. I try to walk and/or do the YMCA oldie class 3 times a week. I do a blood test every morning and chart and list my blood pressure also. I stay below 140 mg/dl pretty well, and never let it get below 80. The Doc took me off the Glyburide last Oct. and I have stayed pretty much between 120 and 140 since. I lost 20 pounds the first month back in '03 and stay between160 and168lbs. Doc said if I get in any birthday cake-eating contests with you girls it is OK and I should try hard to win! He is a good guy (He has 2 daughters and knows who is really in charge!). Also as an US Army vet, I get complete blood tests twice a year and exams too.3. Do you watch what you eat?Yes, Grandma is a wonderful cook and we work at eating, not watching our food! (Sorry, I couldn't resist!). Very balanced meals.4. If you do, what are your reasons for watching what you eat?We don't want to be fat, my diabetes and the 100 year objective to watch you glamour girls as you get old too.

Page 5: W9 power point portfolio

5. Do you have any restrictions?• Only as above. We eat what we like mostly• 6. Do you treat yourself to any food every now and then?

Yes, in moderation of course.7. Did you watch what you ate when you were younger? Not really, we ate to sustain life and did not abuse the act of eating.8. Do you have a healthy sugar intake?Yes, YES! We use sugar substitutes, "Splenda" mostly.9. Do you have a healthy fat intake?I think so. We try to eat low fat foods.

• 10. Do you have a healthy sodium intake?Yes, canned foods contain much salt. I almost never add salt at the table. We rarely have it on the table.

• 11. Were you a healthy person when you were younger?I had all the childhood diseases (I flunked 2nd semester of 1st grade because of it). However, we had to move in with my maternal grandparents (Height of the depression in 1933) I had to attend Catholic school and they didn't have the public school system so they put me into 2nd grade anyway and I worked my skinny butte off! I did so well they put me into a special class with12 kids in it and we all skipped 3rd altogether!

• 12. What exercise did you get when you were younger?Lots of it as a kid. We were outside any chance we could get. Money was short and we kids made our own fun and games. Parents did what they could to keep us busy, but we had lots of unsupervised time to have fun climbing trees and ball games, etc. Girls played outside too.

• 13. What exercise do you currently do?Walk daily when we can, attend the YMCA seniors Range of Motion 1 hr. class in the pool (87 degrees F) 3 times a week. I mow the lawn too.

• 14. Is this too little or too much exercise in your opinion?About right, but we should walk more.

Page 6: W9 power point portfolio

15. Do you exercise on a regular basis?Yes. see above.

• 16. What is one thing you could do to get more exercise in your life? (I could chase girls but Grandma won't let me! just kidding!) Walk more, but it is tough to do when joints and muscles start yelling to say nothing about lower back pain. (We and the neighbors are sissies---they can't stand the noise!)17. Are you at a healthy weight level for your height?YES!

18. Do you have any health problems?Yes, see above about diabetes19. If yes, what are they?

• Diabetes, slightly high blood pressure, but healthier than many old geezers do! My age20. What effects does this have on your life? Not much, considering I don't have to work much and I just try to have fun. 21. If you do have health issues, did you used to have them when you were younger? Not really. I have had pneumonia as a kid and the usual (at that time) diseases, a hernia repair, gall bladder removed a broken leg and lost my curly locks, but I've never been really sick.22. Were they preventable? Some childhood diseases have been practically eliminated. 23. What precautions do you take to make sure these issues aren’t dangerous? We get inoculations, take vitamins, and see the Doctors.24. Is this issue dangerous to your health?

• No. We have a healthy life style. Don't smoke, or drink much.25. What caused health problems?

• I can't define what caused my health problems other than genetics in part, minor accidents and the fact that we have lived a healthy lifestyle.

alI think I have a pretty well

rounded life. I take time for doing

things to help me grow as a

person. For example, I do art,

write some music, work out, and

cook. I would consider myself a

deep person, and love to just

think about things. I spend a lot of

time with my friends and I love

meeting new people. I like

making new friends because I

usually don’t feel very nervous

and I like hanging out with new

people. I also have a very active

life because I figure-skate every

morning before school, do

abdominal workouts in the

evenings, and sometimes run. I

am conscious of my diet and how

much exercise I get. I would say

Greatest Personal Achievement & Happiest Moment

Well this might not be the greatest

achievement ever, but I sang at my cousin’s wedding when I was 11. It gave me confidence to sing in other public places also.

My happiest moments are when I go with my friends or my Mom to Kobey’s/anywhere the beach. Also, when I went to the 311 concert I was extremely, ridiculously happy.

Page 16: W9 power point portfolio

Family’s greatest achievement & What can I do better?

• My family’s greatest achievement would be moving to Germany and living in Europe forseveral years. This would be a kind of hard transition to make.

• Well, anyone could always be more outgoing. I would l like to make even more close friends also.

Page 17: W9 power point portfolio

What I would successfully attempt in one year, 3 words to describe me (asked by closest friends) & My

full given name

• Skydiving, moving to a cool place, being independent, have amazing friends who I can always count on to talk with and have a great time with, make a band, play bass, hit it big time, be the lead singer and create songs that come from my heart.

• (This was asked by friends) Hilarious, creative, and unique

All Mixed Up By 311

• This song describes me because over the summer I almost drowned in the waves at the beach. I was held under the water for about 30 seconds in the under toe twice in row. I was so traumatized and I just needed to get away and get my head back on straight so I just took a walk along the boardwalk with just my iPod. There were several other small bad events that happened that day, and almost drowning was the last straw. I was feeling scared and was just in a bad mood, but I just felt this almost change in the air. I looked around and a feeling inside me transformed. The sun was out, everything was so chill and relaxed, people were laughing, and for a moment I felt the most positive atmosphere I’ve ever felt from a place before. This song was on, and I kept noticing more great things about the beauty around me. There was something so deep and cosmic about his words that just hit a chord with me. This song stirs up intense feelings deep down and that is why this is my song.

You've got to trust your instinct And let go of regret You've got to bet on yourself now star 'Cause that's your best bet

Watch me now with a wicked and wild and I said We come with the funky style That gets us known for the show And we'll mix the hip hop reggae if we say it is so And the naysayers cause they don't mean a thing 'Cause this is what style we bring

Now it's morning but last night's on my mind There's something I need to get off my chest And no matter what may come to shine The dream will always be mine

All mixed up you don't know what to do Next thing you turn around and find the person is you Thought a freak might be the thing But the first could be the last so just get off your ass All mixed up you don't know what to do Next thing you turn around and find the person is you Thought a freak might be the thing But you know this will pass so just get off your ass

You've got to trust your instinct and let go of regret You've got to bet on yourself now star 'Cause that's your best bet

Watch me now with a wicked and wild and I said Sick sick bit got to have it

Like bustin' in on a session but you got to call it quits Sick sick bit just can't quit Fact that you don't even know makes it fully legit

Now it's morning but last night's on my mind There's something I need to get off my chest And no matter what will come to shine The dream will always be mine

You keep me coming, That is a gal that'll kill 'dem stunning, Keep me coming, That is a gal that'll kill 'dem stunning, Keep me coming, That is a gal that'll kill 'dem stunning, Keep me coming, That is a gal that'll kill 'dem stunning,

You make me nervous throat dry My brain is empty don't know why But I saw you doing something Which is really truly nothing But you could bust me out all day

Many moons since first I saw you Many moons since first we did the do Many moons since first I saw you Many moons since first we did the do

And why did I try when I knew it was no and Why did I try when I saw it was so But save it for late we should just let it skate Cause the waiting feel is fine

• Choose one person that has made a positive impact on your life. What difference has this person made? In other words, what makes this person important to you?

• I choose my mother because she is always one to give me advice and also one to be there whenever I need someone to talk to. She has made a huge difference in my life because if I didn’t have her, I would be down a different path right now. She’s important because she’s strong, a great listener, kind, warm to people, unique, and true to herself. I really respect that in a person.

Page 22: W9 power point portfolio

Letter to MomDear Mom,

You have made a very large impact on my life because you’ve always been there to talk to if I’ve needed someone. You honestly are the best listener I’ve ever met, and it’s interesting that you like hearing about all the stuff in my life. You don’t judge me when I tell you things, which is a huge deal to me. I also respect you as a person because you’re sweet, strong, interesting, and just an all-around great person. You’re important to me because if I hadn’t talked to you, got advice from you, and heard about your life, I would most likely not be the same person I am today. Thanks for everything, Mom.

Love,

Emily

Where do you see yourself working, living, and family life? In 3 years? 5 years? 10 years? & If you could

accomplish just one thing in your life, what would it be?

• I see myself working at a creative, artistic place where there’s great people. I hope to be in a relationship and get married at some point in my life. I’m not so sure about having kids, that’s way too far off to think about right now. I see myself living in any warm climate big-city, like Europe or San Diego. In 3 years, I see myself going to a good college that will fit my interests. In 5 years I hope to be in a relationship with a wonderful person whose personality compliments mine perfectly. In 10 years, I hope to be in an awesome career where I work with people or am involved with creative thinking.

• Get a band together and play music whose lyrics and melody speak deep from my heart. I would also love to touch others’ lives with my music.

Page 24: W9 power point portfolio

My Opinion on the Media• In my opinion, I believe only insecure people

follow the media’s trends exactly. I’m not saying that people aren’t influenced by the media, but if they look up to celebrities to see how to act and dress, it seems like they don’t know who they really are. If they can’t be themselves and not worry so much about how skinny Jessica Simpson is, they won’t be reflecting on how “fat” they are. I personally don’t look at any media things like magazines. I don’t think celebrity fashion is attractive personally, so I’m not swayed by their style choices. Their activities or music definitely does not influence me. I dislike top 100 music because there I believe a song should be unique, not be an overdone, synthesized carrying riff. I personally think people that follow the crowd have something beautiful and unique and they shouldn’t just go along with “what’s cool” because they can be respected for being themselves.

Amount of Time Studying and Sleeping per Night

• Studying- I do probably 11 or 12 hours per week. (Monday-Friday) I think this amount is okay because I have classes that don’t have much homework. I only take English, which requires me to spend several hours on homework a night. This relates to the amount I learn in that I’m only learning how to write when at home because I’m perfecting the craft there. Not so much at school.

• Sleeping- I usually go to bed at 10:30 and I wake up at 5:30 every morning. This means I get 7 hours of sleep per night, and 36 hours per week. (Monday-Friday). I think this amount is healthy for my age

Page 28: W9 power point portfolio

Television, Phone & Computer Use Per Night

• If I didn’t have a computer, my life would be so much more complicated. I would have to handwrite everything I do for homework and things would be so more difficult. I barely ever watch TV, but I use the internet every day. I usually spend about 10 hours per week (Monday-Friday) on the internet, and I think I should probably spend less time than this. I know this isn’t good to stall on homework and do Facebook instead. I should probably get more things done in the amount of time it takes me to do them.
