Introduction

Course Introduction

The new Jetta makes extensive use ofcontrol modules and networking usingmultiple Controller Area Network (CAN)buses. Signals are transmitted digitally fromone control module to another on eachCAN-bus, eliminating the need for aseparate wire for each signal. The use ofCAN-bus communication for controls andaccessories reduces the wires needed inthe vehicle.

Electrical Load Management

The electrical load management makessure that there is enough reserve electricalpower in the battery to start the engine.

If necessary, convenience system electricaldevices are deactivated withoutcompromising safety requirements.

The vehicle electrical system controlmodule monitors the engine speed, thebattery voltage and the alternator loadthrough the DF signal (dynamo field).

From this information and from informationabout which devices are on for shortperiods, the vehicle electrical systemcontrol module evaluates the power supplyload state.

Based on this evaluation, the vehicleelectrical system control module canincrease engine speed via the enginecontrol module or deactivate conveniencedevices.

Three load management operating modesare possible.

Operating Mode 1

Terminal 15 ON and alternator active

Management Activities

Windshield Wiper System

Wiper Operation

The wiper system consists of a singlemotor with mechanical connections to thewiper arms.

The selected position of the WindshieldWiper Switch E is sent to the SteeringColumn Electronic Systems Control ModuleJ527 and relayed through the ConvenienceCAN-bus to the Vehicle Electrical SystemControl Module J519. The vehicle electricalsystem control module sends informationabout the selected wiper position throughthe LIN bus to the Wiper Motor ControlModule J400, which controls wiper action.

On vehicles with rain and light sensors, thewiper frequency is calculated in the rainsensor mode and sent to the wiper motorcontrol module.

S319_069

During intermittent operation, wipermovement is speed dependent and variesbetween 2 and 24 seconds.

The wiper control system can detect anobstruction and react according to thedegree of resistance. The wipers will try tomove the obstacle out of the way. If it stillhas not been removed after the fifthattempt, the wipers will stay in thatposition. Activation of the wipers after theobstacle has been removed isaccomplished by turning the switch ON.

Instead of rotating 360°, thewiper assembly reverses every150°. This allows a much smallerspace for wiper linkage.

Service/Winter Position

Moving the wiper switch to the “tipwiping” position (down) within 10 secondsof switching OFF the ignition causes thewipers to move to the end position of wipertravel known as the service/winter position.

When the wipers are in the service/winterposition, the wiper blades can be easilyreplaced or the wiper arms can be lifted toprevent the rubber from freezing to thewindshield.

The wipers will revert to the rest positionwhen the windshield wiper switch is turnedOFF and ON with the ignition ON or if thevehicle reaches a speed of 1.2 mph(two km/h).

When the vehicle is parked andthe hood is open, the wipers willnot operate.
