KEYNOTE: KEVLIN HENNEY - Clean Coders Hate What Happens To Your Code When You Use These Enterprise Programming Tricks

C room 16:45 - 17:45

It is all to easy to dismiss problematic codebases on some nebulous idea of bad practice or bad programmers. Poor code, however, is rarely arbitrary and random in its structure or formulation. Systems of code, whether structured well or poorly, emerge from systems of practice, whether effective or ineffective. To improve code quality, it makes more sense to pick apart the specifi c practices and see how they interact — the cause — than just focus on the code itself — the effect. This keynote takes some time and has some fun looking at how a handful of coding habits, design practices and assumptions can systematically increase the size and complexity of a codebase.

Ripping Apart Java 8 Streams

C room 09:10 - 10:10

Lambda are a great new feature in Java 8. The Java evangelists have been talking up the promise that Lambdas and streams would make our programming lives easier. You want to go faster, no problem, just go ahead and parallelize that stream. What could possibly go wrong? In this talk weʼll fi nd out by ripping apart Java streams to get a better understanding of how they are implemented and what resources they depend upon. One key resource is the ForkJoinPool, a class that is completely invisible. The benchmarks used to support this talk ran with an instrumented version of ForkJoinPool. Come see what these measurements are telling us and how we might avoid the dangers that lie beneath.

Open spaceLobby 09:00 - 17:45We agree that sometimes the best conversations can happen in a hallway. Perhaps you can solve months and months worth of bad code problems in a single converstion. Grab a cup of coffee and visit our partnerʼs open spaces at Voxxed Days.

Get - Together eveningCrowne plaza hotel Ist fl oor 17:45 - 20:00All attendees get a chance to settle in and mingle with a Get-Together evening after Kevlinʼs Keynote.
