V1 THE VOTIVE MASSES Votive Masses are celebrations of the Holy Eucharist in which the Proper (i.e., the Collect, Epistle or Lesson, and Gospel) is not that appointed for the Day. Instead, the Proper is chosen with reference to the intention for which the Mass is being celebrated. Votive Masses may be celebrated on most free weekdays (ferias). They are not normally celebrated on the ferias of Advent, Christmastide, the Epiphany Octave, Septuagesima to Trinity Sunday, all Sundays, Red-Letter Days, Ember Days and Rogation Days. The only exception to this list of excluded seasons for votive masses concerns the Mass of Saint Mary on Saturday, a minor festival of Our Lady that may be observed on all free Saturdays, including Saturdays in Advent, and Saturdays between Low Sunday and Ascension Day. It is traditional to set aside the first free weekday (Feria) in each month as a Votive (Requiem) for the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed. In the month of November, it is appropriate to set aside one or more ferias for this purpose. It is also traditional to set aside the first Thursday for a Votive Mass of our Lord Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest, and the first Friday for a Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart. IG 59. Ps. 8. Ant. O LORD our Governor, how excellentis thy Name in all the world, / thou that hast set thyglory above the heavens!

2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hastthou ordained strength, because of thine enemies, / thatthou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I consider thy heavens, even the work ofthy fingers; / the moon and the stars, which thou hastordained;

4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him, / andthe son of man, that thou visitest him?

5 Thou hast made him but little lower than theangels, / and dost crown him with glory and worship.

6 Thou makest him to have dominion over theworks of thy hands; / and thou hast put all things insubjection under his feet;

7 All sheep and oxen; / yea, and the beasts of thefield;

8 The birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea; / andwhatsoever moveth through the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD our Governor, / how excellent is thyName in all the world!

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, / and to theHoly Ghost;

THE LESSON. Revelation 4. 1.

N THOSE DAYS: I [John] saw, and behold, a doorwas opened in heaven: and the first voice which I

heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me;which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee thingswhich must be hereafter. And immediately I was in theSpirit; and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and onesat on the throne: and he that sat was to look upon like ajasper and a sardius stone: and a rainbow round aboutthe throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And roundabout the throne four and twenty seats; and upon theseats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed inwhite raiment; and on their heads crowns of gold: andout of the throne proceed lightnings and thunderingsand voices. And seven lamps of fire burning before thethrone, which are the seven spirits of God; and beforethe throne as it were a sea of glass, like unto crystal; andin the midst of the throne, and round about the throne,four living creatures, full of eyes before and behind; thefirst one like a lion, and the second like a calf, and thethird having a face like a man, and the fourth like aflying eagle; and every one of them had six wings;around and within they are full of eyes; and they restnot day or night, saying,

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God the Almighty,Which was, and which is, and which is to come.

And when those living beings give glory and honourand thanks to him that sitteth upon the throne, wholiveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders falldown before him that sitteth upon the throne, andworship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast theircrowns before the throne, saying,

Thou art worthy, O Lord,To receive glory and honour and power;For thou hast created all things,And for thy pleasure they are, and were created.

THE GOSPEL. St John 3. 1.

HERE was a man of the Pharisees, namedNicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to

Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know thatthou art a teacher come from God: for no man can dothese signs that thou doest, except God be with him.Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily I sayunto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the

kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How cana man be born when he is old? can he enter the secondtime into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesusanswered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a manbe born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh isflesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest thesound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, andwhither it goeth; so is every one that is born of theSpirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, Howcan these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him,Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not thesethings? Verily, verily I say unto thee, We speak that wedo know, and testify of that we have seen; and yereceive not our witness. If I have told you earthlythings, and ye believe not; how shall ye believe, if I tellyou of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended upto heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even theSon of man, who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted upthe serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son ofman be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in himshould not perish, but have eternal life.

OFFERTORY. Blessed be God the Father, and the onlybegotten Son of God; and blessed be the Holy Spirit: forthe mercy he hath done unto us. [Alleluia].

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 18. 1.

T the same time came the disciples unto Jesus,saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of

heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, andset him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say untoyou, Except ye be converted, and become as littlechildren, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this littlechild, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And whoso shall receive one such little child in myname, receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one ofthese little ones which believe in me, it were better forhim that a millstone were hanged about his neck, andthat he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Woe unto the world because of offences: for it mustneeds be that offences come: but woe to that man bywhom the offence cometh. Wherefore if thy hand or thyfoot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee:it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed,rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast intoeverlasting fire. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck itout, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enterinto life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to becast into hell-fire.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones;for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do alwaysbehold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

OFFERTORY. An Angel stood by the altar of the temple,having a golden censer in his hand: and there was givenunto him much incense, and the smoke of the incenseascended up to God. [Alleluia].

HEREFORE Christ is the Mediator of the newcovenant, that by means of death, for the

men are dead; it is of no strength at all while the testatorliveth. And therefore the first testament also wasdedicated with blood; for when Moses had spokenevery commandment to all the people, according to thelaw, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with waterand scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both thebook and all the people, saying, This is the blood of thecovenant or testament, which God hath commandedyou. Moreover, he sprinkled with blood both thetabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. Andaccording to the law, almost all things are purified withblood, and without shedding of blood there is noforgiveness. It was necessary therefore that thesesymbols of heavenly things should be purified thus; butthe heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices;for Christ hath not entered into holy places made withhands, which are only figures of the true, but intoheaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God forus. Nor need he offer himself many times like the highpriest who entereth into the holy place every year withblood that is not his own: for then must he often havesuffered since the foundation of the world; but now,once for all, at the end of time, he hath appeared to putaway sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it isappointed unto men once to die, but after this thejudgment: so Christ was once offered to bear the sins ofmany; and unto them that look for him shall he appearthe second time apart from sin unto salvation.

He ascended up on high, he led captivity captive,He gave gifts unto men.

And when it is said, He ascended, what is it but that healso descended into the lower parts of the earth? He thatdescended is the same also that ascended up far above allheavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some tobe Apostles; and some, Prophets; and some, Evangelists;and some, Pastors and Teachers; for the perfecting of thesaints for the work of the ministry, for the building up ofthe body of Christ; till we all come, in the unity of the faithand of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfectman, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness ofChrist.

THE EPISTLE. Hebrews 10. 1.

RETHREN: The law of Moses, having as it were ashadow of good things which were to come, but not

the very image of those things, can never with thosesacrifices which they offered continually, year by year,make the comers thereunto perfect; for then would theynot have ceased to be offered? since the worshippers,once they had been purified, should have had no moreconsciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices aremembrance of sins is made over again every year. Forit is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goatsshould take away sins. Wherefore, when he cometh intothe world, he saith,

Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not,But a body hast thou prepared me:In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin

thou hast had no pleasure:Then said I, Lo, I come(In the volume of the book it is written of me)To do thy will, O God.

Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt-offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neitherhadst pleasure therein, (which are offered according tothe law;) then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God:he taketh away the first, that he may establish thesecond. And every priest standeth daily in his ministry offeringmany times those same sacrifices which can never takeaway sins; but this man, after he had offered onesacrifice for sins for ever, sat down at the right of handof God, waiting from henceforth till his enemies bemade his footstool. For by one single offering he hathperfected for ever those who are sanctified; whereof theHoly Spirit also is a witness to us. For after saying,

This is the covenant that I will make with themAfter those days, saith the Lord,I will put my laws into their hearts,And in their minds will I write them;

then saith he,And their sins and iniquitieswill I remember no more.

Now where remission of these is, there is no moreoffering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness toenter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a newand living way, which he hath consecrated for us,through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; and having anHigh Priest over the house of God: let us draw nearwith a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having ourhearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and ourbodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast theprofession of our faith without wavering; (for he isfaithful that promised;) and let us consider one anotherto provoke unto love, and to good works; not forsakingthe assembling of ourselves together, as the manner ofsome is; but exhorting one another: and so much themore, as ye see the day approaching.

ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that hemay offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: who canhave compassion on the ignorant, and on them that areout of the way; for that he himself also is compassedwith infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, as forthe people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And noman taketh this honour unto himself, but he that iscalled of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified nothimself to be made an high priest; but he that said untohim, Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee. And theycontinued stedfastly in the Apostles’ doctrine andfellowship, and in the breaking of the bread, and in theprayers. And fear came upon every soul; and manywonders and signs were done by the Apostles. And allthat believed were together, and had all things incommon; and sold their possessions and goods, andparted them to all men as every man had need. ESUS spake to them another parable, A certain manhad two sons: and the younger of them said to his

father, Father, give me the portion of goods that fallethto me. And he divided unto them his living. And notmany days after, the younger son gathered all together,and took his journey into a far country, and therewasted his substance with riotous living. And when hehad spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land;and he began to be in want. And he went and joinedhimself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him intohis fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filledhis belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and noman gave unto him. And when he came to himself, hesaid, How many hired servants of my father’s havebread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! Iwill arise and go to my father, and will say unto him,Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,and am no more worthy to be called thy son: make meas one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came tohis father. But when he was yet a great way off, his

father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fellon his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him,Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight,and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But thefather said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, andput it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes onhis feet: and bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; andlet us eat, and be merry: for this my son was dead, andis alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they beganto be merry.

Now his elder son was in the field: and as he cameand drew nigh to the house, he heard music anddancing. And he called one of the servants, and askedwhat these things meant. And he said unto him, Thybrother is come; and thy father hath killed the fattedcalf, because he hath received him safe and sound. Andhe was angry, and would not go in: therefore came hisfather out, and entreated him. And he answering said tohis father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neithertransgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yetthou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merrywith my friends: but as soon as this thy son was come,which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hastkilled for him the fatted calf. And he said unto him,Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. Itwas meet that we should make merry, and be glad: forthis thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and waslost, and is found.
