About Habitat in Harmony

Habitat in Harmony Community Garden (HHCG) is a dynamic not-for

-profit community project which was established in 1995 by Bel-

mont Neighbourhood Centre INC. that continues to be a proud pro-

ject of BNC to this day. It is dedicated to forming meaningful rela-

tionships by bringing people together and growing fresh organic

produce in our community. The garden is designed and maintained

using permaculture principles and we are passionate about sharing

our fresh produce, knowledge, in the hope that the community can

be empowered to make changes toward living more sustainably.

Mission Statement:

Vision:

To provide access to affordable, fresh, organic, nourishing fruit

and vegetables.

Be an advocate for community gardens and local groups.

To provide a dynamic learning environment for the community.

To support regional biodiversity values, and protect local flora

and fauna.

Objectives:

Provide an environment which is respectful, safe, colourful, sen-

sory, edible, non-discriminatory, multicultural, educational, acces-

sible and relaxed.

To make connections and partnerships with the community local-

ly and worldwide.

Share knowledge to visitors about community gardens, local or-

ganisations and other community projects.

Provide practical hands on experience in gardening and other

skills.

Provide education relating to sustainability and the environment.

safe habitat.

About Volunteering

It benefits both the individual and the community

It is a rewarding way to participate in activities and engage with the

community

It is a matter of choice undertaken by free will and without coercion

It is unpaid

It is undertaken in designated volunteer positions and does not

replace paid workers

It can be undertaken to satisfy mutual obligation requirements to

receive pensions and welfare payments

Volunteering at HHCG

HHCG seeks volunteers with a strong work ethic who want

to contribute to their community. If you love to work outdoors, are

passionate about permaculture and organic gardening then you will

fit in perfectly! Volunteers are a vital and essential part of the gar-

den.

We aim to meet the needs of individuals and the organisation and

our policies aim to;

Support the operation of the community garden and our environ-

mental mission.

Match specific roles and tasks with individual’s skills and pas-

sions.

Offer a safe and rewarding working environment.

Improve the skills and knowledge of volunteers.

Promote a respectful and supportive environment for all volun-

teers.

Mutual Obligation

Mutual obligation is based on the principle that participants are sup-

ported financially by the community, and give back to the communi-

ty by volunteering their time and skills toward projects which benefit

the community that supports them. We are keen to work with indi-

viduals who are passionate about gardening and our community. An

initial interview will be carried out to ensure you are suitable for the

role as well as ongoing supervision to ensure that mutual obligation

participants are fulfilling their roles according to their skills.
