In planning music with Interim Organist-Choirmaster, Cody Blue Miller, I came across a hymn which was new to me and captured my heart. Neither of us was familiar with the tune, but we were moved by the words. I immediately decided that this hymn will serve as a daily meditation for me for a time. I offer it to us all as a daily prayer. - Gayle+ Eternal Spirit of the Living Christ - Hymn 698
Eternal Spirit of the living Christ,
I know not how to ask or what to say;
I only know my need, as deep as life,
and only you can teach me how to pray.
Come, pray in me the prayer I need this day;
help me to see your purpose and your will--
where I have failed, what I have done amiss;
held in forgiving love, let me be still.
Come with the vision and strength I need
to serve my God, and all humanity;
fulfillment of my life in love outpoured--
my life in you, O Christ, your love in me.
SUMMER STEWARDSHIP REMINDER Please remember that although you may be out of town and on vacation this summer, our church still has bills that never take a vacation! Thank you for continuing to support the mission and minis-try of St. Luke’s by sending in your pledge checks, especially in the summer when you are away. Have a safe, joyful, and blessed summer.!

2019 Update for Room in the Inn Ministry by Rachel Guyer
Why does St. Luke’s participate in Room in the Inn (RITI)? The goal is to reintegrate homeless men into
the working community. In fact, RITI is just one small part of a larger program run by Area Relief Ministries (ARM). ARM not only provides food and housing for the disenfranchised, but facilitates job searches through résumé writing and computer lab access. Finally, the men who participate in RITI are given short-term work op-portunities (usually lawncare) through the ARM work program.
One Sunday every month, volunteers from St. Luke’s come together to prepare meals and provide shelter
to men in RITI. In order to participate, guests may not carry any weapons or be under the influence of any sub-stances. ARM staff members screen for both. Dinner starts at 6 p.m.. The men are then given bedding and a safe place to sleep for the night in the Parish Hall. Two male parishioners stay overnight and help with morning meal prep. At 5 a.m., the men wake up and have breakfast. Before they return to ARM an hour later, they receive a sack lunch.
The busiest time of the year for RITI is during the winter season (November–February). Last year, 36 churches served 251 men; of the latter, 27% (68 men) participated in RITI for the first time. During those same months, St. Luke’s fed and provided overnight shelter for 25 men per month, totaling 100 guests—about 12% more each month than the program average. St. Luke’s is one of only a handful of local churches that commits to participating in RITI year-round. Our parish’s service is a tangible good in the lives of not just these men and their loved ones, but the wider Jackson community.
In the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus says, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few” (Matt.
9:37). This is especially true of RITI. We need more volunteers. At present we have 4 regular food prep/service volunteers, and 3 of St. Luke’s other ministries pack the sack lunches (Young Families, Choir, and Youth). Alt-hough occasional volunteers often assist, we need more regular help. Our biggest need is to increase the number of overnight male volunteers. At present we have only 4, meaning that the same volunteers participate every other month. If we could double our overnight volunteers to 8, each person would only commit to serving 3 nights per year. Potential overnight male volunteers must be known to the rector for at least 6 months.
Because we expect 15 guests to participate in RITI each month this summer, we need help sustaining this
ministry. Our upcoming RITI service dates are July 21st, August 25th, and September 22nd. Donations for din-ner, breakfast, and lunch are always welcome. If you are able to volunteer in any fashion, please contact Rachel Guyer (904-868-2165 or [email protected]) or Mary Anne Gucker (731-989-3744 or [email protected]).

Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church The Parish Life - July/August 2019
SEPTEMBER PARISH LIFE DEADLINE The deadline for articles, photos and schedules is August 15.
NEWCOMERS TO ST. LUKE’S LISA MONVIGNIER
I’m new to the Jackson area. My father, who was born in what is now the Natchez Trace State Park, grew up in Lexing-ton, Tn. I came to Lex-ington from New York last September to be nearer to him and my brother, so I’m embrac-ing my Southern half (my other half is Indian — my mother came from the West Indies). My father was in the Air Force for many years, so
I was a traveler even before I was born. Our family moved around both overseas as well as here in the U.S. I graduated from high school in Anchorage, Alaska, college in Riverside, California and earned a graduate degree in New York, New York. I worked as a marketing professional in media and con-sulting firms for more than 20 years. I’ve taken a break from the corporate world over the past few years and helped care for family members, but I hope to jump back into the work-force this fall. I was a jazz singer in New York; my heart has been in the arts for as long as I can remember — I either participate in or have a deep appreciation for all art forms. I also enjoy walking, exer-cising, and discovering new people/animals, places, cultures and foods. I came to the Christmas Eve service at St. Luke’s and a couple of months later started coming on Sundays. I felt at home in this light-filled, loving environment and was very happy to be confirmed at St. Luke’s in June of this year.
