Kavaratti: The CentralTeacher Eligibility Test(CTET) held at CapitalIsland on 18th November,2012 at Govt SeniorSecondary School. Among1066 candidates who haveregistered, 926 attendedfor the examination. The Ministry of HumanResource Developmentauthorized the CentralBoard of SecondaryEducation (CBSE) toconduct the CTET.
For Paper I a totalof 389 and for Paper II 514candidates appeared forthe examination. Paper I is
CTET Held at Capital Islandfor Lower Primary i.e. from1st to 4th standard andPaper II is for 5th to 8th

education programme on
energy conservation and
its efficient use
implemented by The
Energy and Resources
Institute (TERI) with
support from the Bureau of
Energy Efficiency (BEE),
Ministry of Power in 22
states and UTs of India
including Lakshadweep.
A combined Master
Trainers’ Training -cum -
Sensitization workshop for
teachers, students and
parents on energy
conservation was
organized by TERI in
collaboration with the
Directorate of Education at
Kavaratti on 19th
November, 2012. The
workshop was conducted
by the members from
Educating Youth for
Sustainable Development
Division of TERI – New
Delhi headed by Ms.
Ranjana Saikia.

of the society, who can
easily spread the message
of awareness on energy
conservation.

pointed out various steps
that can be taken up at
individual levels to
conserve the energy and
use it efficiently. He also
appealed all the teachers
to educate students about
these issues.
A total of 160
participants including
teachers, students, and
parents from various
schools in Kavaratti, Kiltan
and Minicoy attended the
workshop. To appraise the
student participants, hands
on activities like slogan-
c u m - s k e t c h i n g
competition, and group
activity on energy and
its conservation were
organized on the occasion.
The winners were also
awarded with cash prizes,
solar torches and merit
certificates. Teachers were
trained on various tools
and methods for energy
conservation and its
efficient use. Resource
materials l ike training
manual titled ‘Doing More
with Less’, Flip Charts,
Comic Book, CFL
bulbs and participation
certificates were distributed
to the participants during
the workshop. A movie
titled ‘ROSHNI’ developed
under the project was also
screened on the occasion.
In addition, three ‘Nodal
Schools’ in Kavaratti such
as Govt. Sr. Sec. School (S
B Wing), Kavaratti,
Kendriya Vidyalaya, and
Govt. Girls Sr. Sec. School,
Kavaratti were selected by
eminent judging panel
comprising senior officials
from the Directorate of
Education and Department
of Electricity on the basis
of presentations made by
these schools highlighting
the activities undertaken
by them on energy
conservation and related
issues at their school level.

awarded to the winning
schools. At the end of this
workshop, all the winners
were felicitated by Shri. A

Kalpeni: Shri.GurbachanSingh (DANIPS), newlyappointed Dy.SP forAndrott and Kalpeni arrivedhere on 17th November,2012 for his maiden visit tothe island. Shri.G.B.Singh, a nativeof Punjab joined as SubInspector in Delhi Policeand promoted as AssistantCommissioner of Police(ACP) on 22.05.2008. Healso served for a period ofone year on deputation toUNO mission in Bosniaduring 2006-07. He joined in theL a k s h a d w e e pAdministration on 02nd
October, 2012 and joinedas Dy.SP for Andrott andKalpeni on 06.11.2012. During his visit atKalpeni Shri.GurbachanSingh has reviewed theLaw and Order situationand observed that the Lawand Order situation in theisland is quite normal andthe people are very goodand co-operative. Hepraised the natural beautyof the island and thegoodness and co-operation of the people. Hehas requested the peopleto exercise their mandatepeacefully during theensuing Panchayatelection. He left for Androtton 23rd November, 2012.

A Friendly Amphibian
Kavaratti: The DistrictInstitute of Education andTraining (DIET) organizedan innovative mode oftraining-cum-awarenesscamp to the students,teachers and parents withthe aim to enhance thequality education inelementary level. A team ofDIET faculty includingShri.Mirzad Khan andShri.Noorul Huda, Lecturersinteracted with a team ofteachers from VidhyaCouncil, an organization ofexpert teachers at Calicutfor module preparation. On the basis of theinterview a team of 31teachers includingPrincipals, Councillors,Teachers etc. brought toKavaratti and Agatti Islandto impart the EnhancementP r o g r a m m e .S h r i . K a m a r u d h e e n ,

The team dividedinto two groups and thefirst group consist of 18members stationed atKavaratti and the other 13members precede toAgatti to carryout theassignment. They startedtheir assignment from9th November to 18th
November in a successiveway in various schools.
In Kavaratti theteam handled the classesfrom 1st to 5th standards ofJBS (North), JBS (East),Govt. Girls SeniorSecondary School and SBwing of Govt SeniorSecondary School.The expert teachersdemonstrated six periods
per day and handled thesubject l ike English,Malayalam, Maths andEVS. New methodology inteaching i.e. constructivistapproach adopted and tookclasses very interestingly.The backward students inclasses which was pointedout by regular teachers putforward with specialinteresting teaching. Theymainly targeted thelearning through studentcentred approach whichempowered to train anddemonstrate teachersthrough the realmethodology by practice ina real classroom situation.They also organizedawareness classes tothe Parents, SchoolManagement Committeemembers and Teachersseparately.
The expertteachers opined that theislands' students are veryenergetic, active andcurious. The responsesfrom students are higherthan their expectation andthe team expressed theirsatisfaction. In everyawareness class theyexplained the approach ofparents and teacherstowards the children andhow to manage them inschool and residents.
The Director ofEducation, Chairperson,Village (Dweep)Panchayat, Joint Director,District Panchayat, allEducation Officers, SubjectExperts, DIET Principaland faculties and JBSHeadmasters activelyinvolved as a team toachieve the goal.
In future, similarclasses will be extended toall other islands in a facedmanner.

An island can sponsor a total of 50 participants
(40 men and 10 women) and Bitra 15 (10 men and 5
women). Winners in 1st 2nd and 3rd place will get the
enhanced rate of Rs.5000/-, Rs3750/- and Rs.2500/-
respectively and champion island will get Rs.10, 00000/-
as cash award. Eligibility for participation is youths
having age between 18-35 years can participate
calculated as on 31/12/2012. Student up to plus two
are not eligible to participate. Attested copy of birth
certificate, ID card is mandatory for participation. The
Principals are directed to select best participants,
prepare, practice and present the contingent in the
festival. Any untoward incident, impersonation, over
aged participation from the part of participants, teams
or escorting officials will be viewed seriously. The
chairman organizing committee is hereby authorized
to co-ordinate all islands for further course of action.
Amini: As part of National
Wild Life Week
Celebration-2012, Shri.
Unnam Ahamed and his
team mates saved the life
of a sea turtle came for
lying eggs at 8.00PM on
the night of 21st November,
2012. It happened in the
face area of Environment
and Forest Unit Office at
Amini Island. Shri. Unnam
Ahammed and his team
mates found that the sea
turtle was coming from the
sea, while they were sitting
the beach road flat form.
Without any hesitation this
amphibian slowly digs the
sea beach sand and came
up to beach and made a
cage adjacent to the beach
road by digging sand with
its back wings. After laying
eggs she moved towards
south side through the
beach road eaten some of
the small coconut nuts and
she was in doubt that someof the human-beings
following behind her and
she immediately turn thedirection towards sea.
Unfortunately there was
fencing and that blockedthe movement of the sea
turtle and Shri. Ahamed
and his team mates put arope on the fore wings and
draped toward the end of
the fencing and turn to thesea side and they released
the knots of the forewings.
Sea turtle slowly drawn tosea side and immediately
reaching the sea she swam
as fast as she couldpossible. A large number of
people gathered thereto
witness this event. Childrenwere run behind the turtle
and touched the out shell
of the turtle while she wasgoing to sea.
