BCA SOUTHERN DISTRICT SHDNIN HDONKD SERVICE fi GATHERING There will be no services at Senshin Temple on Sunday, January 20th. Please join us at the Southern District gathering at the Los Angeles Nishi Betsuin. Information below.

At the beginning of 2012, the 15 temples that make up the Southern District of the Buddhist Churches of America agreed to gather together for a single observance of the memorial of Shinran Shonin, the founder of our Jodoshinshu Hongwanjiha. The idea of a single gathering was to enable our Nembutsu Sanghas to get to know each other better as we participated in a traditional service and afternoon program. Our proposed schedule is as follows:

lOam Otsutome - "Otsutome" means one's work or job, what one does for a living. The same word is also used to mean the chanting of sutras at a temple or home Butsudan, one's spiritual work. The otsutome will be in the Betsuin Hondo, or main hall. It will be a more formal service with the chanting ofSambujo, Shoshinge in gyOfu style and Wasan. The Kinnara Gagaku orchestra from Senshin Temple will play as part of the service. Selected readings to be read by a representative from district temples.

11:30am Everyone on their own for lunch in Little Tokyo.

1:30pm Free Arpana/Kinnara Dance Concert in Betsuin Kaikan In December of2011, the Kinnara Taiko & Gagaku group joined with the Arpana Dance Company to give three Tsunami Relief Benefit concerts in Hiroshima, Kure, and Nara, Japan. Sponsored by three Jodoshinshu temples in Japan, the company was able to raise approximately $20,000. Both Kinnara and Arpana are made up of 2nd and 3rd generation Japanese-Americans and Indian-Americans, who share a common interest in their own traditional culture. The afternoon concert will mainly feature the Arpana Dance Company, a dance tradition from South India called Bharata Natyam and a collaborative piece with Kinnara Taiko. It is an opportunity to see another Asian tradition significantly different from western traditions and how it adapts to western cultures. The concert is approximately 1 hour.

In lieu of going to Little Tokyo for lunch, we would like to order ben to lunches for some of our members to be made available at the Betsuin. This simple Bento will be $5.00 each. Check payable to Senshin Temple. Please call in order to Rev. Kodani (323) 731-4617.

HONDO TOBAN VOLUNTEERS Senshin is once again seeking volunteers to join the Hondo To ban group. This group is made up of 12 separate crews, each of which has four persons assigned to it. Due to age, death or distance, the Hondo To ban group has lost quite a few members over the past several years, leaving some of the crews with only two or three people. We prefer to have four-person crews since they provide a buffer in case one of the individuals in the crew cannot help on a particular date during that crew's assigned month.

With the 12 crews, we can maintain a schedule that requires each crew to work only one month in every 13-month rotation. This is because we do not have services during the month of August This also permits each crew to have a different month assigned to it during each 13-month rotation, which is preferred since some months have five weekends. No crew wishes to be assigned a 5-weekend month every year!

Each crew decides when it wants to meet at the temple. Most meet on a Saturday morning, some on a Friday, if that crew is composed of retirees. Each crew has a lead person who contacts the others in the crew to set the day and time to meet when that crew's to ban month comes around. The lead person also is responsible to secure the key to the Hondo, usually obtaining it from Janice or Rev. Mas.

In some cases, a lead person already has a key to the Hondo so he/ she will not need to secure the key from the office staff. In fact, if the tobancrew meets on a Saturday morning after 8:30AM, Rev. Mas will already have opened the Hondo for the Flower To ban group that prepares the Naijin flowers on Saturday mornings. In those circumstances, the lead person does not have to worry about the key.

The responsibilities of each to ban crew are as follows:

1. Dry mop beneath the pews to get the dirt/ dust/ debris out onto the aisles. 2. Vacuum the carpet in the Gejin (pew) area of the Hondo, including the steps and the elevated area

in front of the Naijin. 3. Vacuum the Naijin carpet, the hallway floor behind the Naijin and the floor of the flower prep

room. 4. Vacuum the.carpets in the crying rooms and straighten/arrange the furniture and chairs in those

rooms (once the items stored in these two rooms are removed and the rooms are ready for use). 5. Vacuum the tile area in the foyer and clean the tabletops. 6. Wipe/clean the wooden parts of the pews with dust rags. 7. Wipe/clean the handrails and the wood surfaces below the windows. 8. Wipe/clean the organ and the three podiums (two tall, one short). 9. Dust (carefully) everything in the Naijin, except for the main altar. 10. Arrange the service and funeral books in the holders on the backs of the pews.

All of the above work can be completed in approximately 45 minutes when four people are working, and within an hour even if only three individuals are present.

If you would like to volunteer for the Hondo To ban group, please call Wilbur Takashima at (31 0) 398-9558, or talk to him any Sunday at the temple. We would be most happy to assign you to a crew, and your help would be valued and appreciated! We may also consider an annual sign-up event for the Hondo To ban crews, but those details need to be worked out.

SENSHIN-Jl BUILDING FUND After an unbelievable series of events and mishaps, the final window installation on the second floor of the Education Building has now been completed. With that, we anticipate no further work on this building other than normal maintenance and repairs.

As for the Hondo building, we are still awaiting the delivery and installation of special high security locks that use restricted keys. For some reason, this process has been bogged down, even after sending a special letter of request to a supplier of security hardware so that our locksmith could obtain the necessary lock cylinders and key blanks to change all the locks on this building to operate with a single high-security key. As previously

mentioned, this will provide better security in that the key will be impossible to reproduce without an official temple request and a special security clearance.

As for the Social Hall, it was noted at the December Board meeting that the remodeling of this building will likely take place no earlier than 2014 as we need to further explore the ramifications of the City of Los Angeles permitting process in relation to the remodeling work that we wish to perform. The interim period will also give us more time to establish a priority list of improvements for the Social Hall. We believe that the relocation of the restroom facilities in the building will be our greatest challenge, and that issue requires further inquiries with the City's

We deeply appreciate the contributions that the Building Fund has been receiving during the interim. All such contributions will be earmarked towards the future improvements to the Social Hall.
