Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, It looks like winter will make an appearance this year — hopefully not soon. The temps dropped to about 30° overnight, but it’s mid-October, so it’s to be expected. Last week Paul and I went to Las Vegas for the NASCAR truck series race and it was still in the 90’s, which was a little warmer than we expected. We’re still keeping busy at National Chevy. We have a few new parts in the newsletter this month — check them out. It would seem the vent window handles and heater blower motor resistor will be good sellers as we get calls for them regularly. We’re still having problems getting items from some of our suppliers. They just don’t seem to be stocking as much anymore, which means we have to order and stock more so we don’t run out. There are a few items we’ve been waiting over a year for, but you hate to take them out of the catalog as they haven’t been officially discontin-ued. Our apologies if we are out of an item that you ordered. We do try to keep a large inventory but can’t control everything we would like to. Please send in pictures for the newsletter. I’m running short and could use your help. Send a short (or long) article and share your pride and joy with fellow members. I’m thanking you in advance for your help. Time to go — ‘til next time.......

Hand-in-Hand

Last month I described how to remove your vent window frames from your doors, so I could show you how to replace the vent window weatherstripping. The shop manual covers the removal and installation of the assembly, but not the replacement of the actual weatherstrip itself. This month we’re off into unchart-ed waters, so hopefully this installment of “Hand-in-Hand” will guide you enough in your endeavor that you won’t end up on Gilligan’s Island. Thefirstthingthathastobedoneistoremovethevent window frame and glass from the vent window assembly. To achieve this, you must remove the vent window rivet that the window pivots on when open-ing and closing. Drill it out using a 1/8” drill bit, and make sure you center punch the rivet to make sure you’re in the center when drilling. Don’t want to dam-age the frame brackets.

SEE PHOTO 1

The vent window assembly is now ready to be disas-sembled. Drill out the six rivets (using the same 1/8”

drill) holding the division bar frame to the vent win-dow frame and separate. You can now pull the vent window weatherstripping out of its frame and discard. The division bar liner also must be removed to give access to the little bent over tabs holding the vertical seal in place. My division bar liner hit the trash barrel along with the old weatherstripping. I would suggest that you replace it, you’ve come this far already. Re-move the vertical seal by straightening the bent over tabs.Andyou’llfindthereisnothingmoretodisas-semble. Halfway there!

SEE PHOTO 2

At this point in the article, I must wander just a little. Remember that the vent windows I’m working on are out of the N.C.A. project car. The 150 Model had clear window glass, and we decided the custom lookdefinitelyneededtintedwindowglass.Nowornever, it was time to replace the vent window glass.

The shop manual suggests soaking the window glass and frame in gasoline to soften the setting rub-ber enough to allow you to remove the vent window glass, so I tried it. Out came the hammer, safety glasses, and screw-driver. In reality, I just didn’t leave it soak long enough. The shop manual suggests 24 hours, I gave it a soaking long enough to drink a beer. Re-member, follow direc-tions. The vent window setting rubber that we sell will do both of

your vent windows, but you must cut it in half width-wise to get 2 pieces. Use a scissors and cut it into two

3/4” wide strips. Put your window frame in a vise, and brush oil into the channel that the window sets in.

SEE PHOTO 3

I wrapped the setting rubber around the vent window glass and lowered it into this oiled frame, keep-ing the setting rubber tight around the glass by holding it on each corner. It slid right in onmyfirstattempt. The oil will react with the rubber, making it swell to provide a wa-tertightfit,butagain,it will take time. It’s a good thing, I found out later, because I had to reposition the window glass a little bit later on to make a good seal against the

vent window vertical seal. With the window glass replaced, it was time to start reassembling all the pieces. The vent window weath-

erstrip was pretty easy to install on the frame using a screwdriver to shove the bead in the channel. Don’t worry about mixing up which side is which, because the weather-strip has a slotted hole to go over the bracket that holds the vent window frame in place. It will only go on one way, the correct way. When I had the weatherstrip in place, I didn’t like the way it kind of “flappedout”whereit made it’s tightest bend. But when it is installed back in the

door, thedoorframewillflattenitout. Next I installed the vertical seals to the division bar channels. I applied weatherstrip adhesive to the backs of the vertical seals before laying them in place and bending over the attaching tabs. I don’t know if this is necessary, but thought it was a good idea to keep them securely in place. It is possible to mess up at this point. Although there is no right or left side vertical seal, you must make sure you don’t put them in backward in re-lation to the way the window closes. Just think about it a minute before installing them, and you’ll be all right. After the vertical seals were properly installed. I madeafewpracticerunstoseehoweverythingfittogether. It was necessary to trim (with a razor blade) a “smidgen” of vertical seal rubber at each end to mate perfectly with the vent window weatherstrip rubber. WhenIhadacorrectfitholdingthetwopiecestogeth-er. I decided it was time to wrap it up. I laid new division bar liner in place and trimmed off the excess with tin snips. I used a 1/8” drill bit in a drill press and drilled the 6 required holes to reat-tach the division bar to the vent window assembly. All that’s required at this point is to rivet everything back together. I used 1/8” x 5/32” steel rivets. Steel pop

rivets will give you the strength you need. Don’t use aluminum or you’ll be sorry down the road. I found them right across the street at the local hardware store, and they were thirty cents cheaper, besides.

SEE PHOTO 4

The rivets that hold the vent window frame to the assembly are listed in our catalog, and are essential to the success of our adventure. They have a shoulder on them to allow the vent window to move when opening or closing the vent window. I laid the rivet in place and mounted the assembly in a vise with the head of the rivet resting against the jaw of the vise. I used a punch and “smushed” the rivet down, with the vise jaw taking the brunt of the blow. You have to have something solid behind the head of the rivet, or you willgetaloosefit.

I had complete success, and learned a few things about a few items we sell. One thing I learned was that

Before I close, however, just thought I’d bring to your attention something you might miss if you don’t look closely at the pictures. Look at that neat little Chevro-let Bowtie that we had glass etched into the vent window glass; customs are cool ... !

Here are some pictures of my 1951 Chevrolet Styleline De Luxe 4 door sedan. The restoration/build was started in March of 2008 and completed in May of 2009. This was a ground up restoration. The body was removed from the frame and all of the original running gear trashed. A Mustang II style front suspension with power rack, tubular arms and disc brakes was installed. In the rear a Currie 9” Ford rear holding 3.50 gears was located with a Chas-sis Engineering ladder bar kit and suspended with coil over shocks. Rear brakes are Ford Explorer discs. The frame was painted black before the body was remount-ed. BF Goodrich radial wide whites are mounted on chrome 15” wheels sporting 57 Chevy style hubcaps. The engine and transmission are what really set this car apart A LS7 Corvette crate motor was obtained from Street and Performance along with a 4L85E au-tomatic transmission with overdrive. The only engine mods are the stainless steel headers, but with 505 HP as delivered no mods were needed. The engine has 427 CID and torque of 472 pounds. Cooling the beast isaGriffinaluminumradiatorwithelectricthermo-statically controlled fans. At 70 on the highway the tach is just showing over 2000 rpm. Almost all of the body trim was removed. The hood is now one piece and the underside is as smooth as the top as the hood was double paneled. A 1950 Olds style one-piece windshield was installed. Everything in this build with the exception of the body shell and the frame rails is new. Inside Haneline gauges were installed along with Vintage Air heat/cool and

defrost. The steering column is chrome Ididit tilt. I removed the wood rim wheel shown in the photos and replaced it with a 1953 Corvette replica from Flam-ing River using an Ididit adapter. I also added a Lokar floormountedemergencybrakelever. The windows and seats are power as are the brakes. The front buckets are of unknown origin. The interior was done in tan genuine leather. There are 3-point seat belts in the front. The throttle is drive by wire type. I bought the car off eBay in September of 2010. This is my third eBay car purchase and all have met or exceeded expectations. I wasn’t able to put many miles on it before Michigan’s ugly winter weather set in, but next year I plan on attending the Back to the 50’s in St. Paul and the Street Rod Nationals + in Lou-isville, Kentucky.

I am writing to let you see the prog-ress I have made on my 1952 Chevy Deluxe Styleline 2-dr. Coupe. You had put it in the December 2010 edition. Enclosed are the old pictures and what it looks like at this time. I am trying my best to keep the outside original. Thanks to you guys because the parts I ordered from you helped a lot. I also put a new motor in with the help of my friends. Then we prepped it to have it painted. The man in the picture is one of them. His name is Raymond Wesley and he did a lot of the work. Macco did a nice paint job. I am currently working on the inte-rior. I found the July issue of the 1951 & 52 specs very interesting. The town of Union Beach has a Fourth of July parade and I drove it in the parade with a few other old cars. The on lookers loved it.

FOR SALE — 1950 Chevy Styleline Deluxe 4-dr. Sedan - $12,500. One-of-a-kind. One owner with 22,000 actual miles. You will not find another one like this. Car recently purchased from the estate of a lady who bought the car new in February, 1950. I have the original sales slip from the dealer, origi-nal keys, and papers. The car was kept in a garage and had not been driven for awhile. A lot of work has been done since buying the car to make it as safe and dependable as possible. Have had the en-gine, transmission, rear end, and fuel lines flushed, rebuilt the Rochester carburetor, installed a new gas tank, a new exhaust system, new battery, new shocks, new master cylinder, wheel cylinders and brake lines, new spark plugs, new thermostat, new carpet throughout the car and trunk, all new door, trunk and fender skirt gaskets, new rubber grom-mets, a new set of Coker radial wide white wall tires. The car had plastic seat covers put on when it was new. The front seat has a few small holes. The back seat is very good. The paint is better than you can imagine. This car is truly and original an-tique. Original seat covers, headliner, door panels, etc. All work was professionally done. You will not find another 61-year old car in as good condition as this one. Runs and drives like new with no rattles or squeaks and could be driven anywhere. Don’t miss out on owning this piece of history. You will definitely be a proud owner. Buyer responsible for picking up or shipping. I will help any way pos-sible. Car is in Texas. Can send a lot of pictures. Any questions, call James at (512) 748-3528
