The Tech Times A new government plan in Myanmar has forced the segregation of Muslims in the region. Over 130,000 Muslims will be forced into closed camps. The new policy is only a draft, but it is only the beginning of yet another abusive law. The largest flow of Muslim refugees in Myanmar has occurred in only three weeks. Tens of thousands of refugees have fled to Thailand in boats. For decades, Muslims in Myanmar have faced persecution and violence. The humans rights problem in Myanmar is one that is often overlooked. For years the Muslim minority in Myanmar have been forced from their homes, killed, tortured, and oppressed. For decades, Muslims have faced discrimination in Myanmar. They are attacked by the military, forced from their homes, and treated as second class citizens. Buddhist extremists take part in killing Muslims. Recent attacks by Buddhist radicals have forced Muslims into refugee camps. Since conflict between Buddhists and Muslims has erupted, the military has taken part in abuses against the Muslim minority. Myanmar’s parliament is also expected to pass a bill banning interfaith marriage. This is all systematic abuse of Muslims in the region. Muslim refugees rely on smugglers to take them away from oppression and discrimination. Myanmar security forces profit off of the fleeing refugees, forcing payment from them. Myanmar naval boats are also said to give Muslim refugees over to human traffickers. Winter is finally here, and you know what that means - Star- bucks’ infamous red cups have appeared once again. This year, the coffee chain has introduced another drink to the menu: the Chestnut Praline Latte. This new latte has already won the hearts of customers with them calling it, “flavorful”, “amazing”, and “perfect”. Some people have even predicted that it will top the Pumpkin Spice Latte, Starbucks’ current best-selling drink. The Chestnut Praline Latte is described as a blend of fresh espresso with flavors of caramelized chestnuts, with freshly steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and spiced praline crumbs. A tall (12 oz) cup of the drink has a total of 270 calories while a grande (16 oz) has 330 calories and a venti (20 oz) has 410. Even though the drink was only released on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, it was in development for about two years by the Starbucks Global Beverage Innovation team. During this time they tested the latte in different markets and perfected the flavor. The Chestnut Praline Latte is now available in Starbucks stores across the Apartheid in Myanmar By Griffin Silbey, Reporter Red-Cupped Heaven As the winter season starts to cause temperatures to get colder, as tiredness and irritability starts to take full effect, people suffer seasonal depression. Seasonal depression is classified as a subtype of major depression and is caused by the change in season. During this time period, people tend to become irritable and have low energy. Also, they become overly sensitive and have problems getting along with others. Different methods of coping with depression include listening to music, drawing, writing, and reading. The internet is also a good dis- traction, as various blogging and streaming sites work as a great escape from depression. The best methods of coping with depression is finding a distraction that will help get your mind off of what you’re dealing with. With coping with seasonal depression, it’s best to try to get your house brighter with sunlight. People often mistake depression as a temporary thing. It is not easy for people who have to deal with it. Some have said it’s a never ending tunnel of darkness with no light at the end. People who deal with seasonal depression cope with it in different ways. It’s different for everyone since people could have a more severe case than others. Stress management is key when trying to beat seasonal depression during the winter. Especially around the holidays, stress will build up and tend to cause people to have many unhealthy thoughts and fall into depression. With people who suffer seasonal depression, it’s important to keep in mind not to push them into telling you anything. This could lead to more stress, and essentially make their depression worse. You can always try to comfort that person, but if they want to be left alone, just let them. It is easier to communicate to students and a single adult.” At the forum, students are split up by their broad topic, such as Home in Nevada. They are then put in a room with other students from schools all over the valley, such as Southwest CTA, Bonanza, and Cimarron. Within each room, students would talk about a vareity of topics, from hot button topics like Marijuana and Same-Sex Marriage, to issues close to home, like funding schools and the size of CCSD. The students are encouraged to speak their minds. “When do you ever get the chance to get into a room with students valley wide, from all different backgrounds and socio-eco- nomic brackets and sit in together to have an open discussion, where nothing you say is wrong?” said Donn Jersey, publisher of lasve- gassun.com. With such topics and people, some ask if the forum has role in education. “If you looked in the back of the lunchroom that day, those were probably some of the most powerful tables inVegas that day.” said Jersey “It was a lot of decision mak- ers. They all had one thing in common: they care about education. They care about the students. I want us to find better ways to harness it so we can move things forward and have more actionable point, so it doesn’t just fall off from media the next year. We need to take a look at ‘what can we scream?’in 2016 and 2015, can we rattle some cages before ses- sion gets together. I wish that the legislature would have heard the discussion on school funding. My group talked about breaking up of districts and the economic impact of that. In education, our hope is always to rattle some cages up north and in Vegas. My group knew the economy of the district. Rehearsal for MurderBy Hannah Polyak, Reporter Jampackedwithmystery,romance,andabitofcomedy,the2-hourplayRehearsal for Murder was a huge success.. This play brought on a whole new level of talent to West. Students ranging from 9th to 12th grade all came together to put on an amazing show. From set design to high levels of acting, everything was completed with a pro-fessional attitude. The set design varied from a study, a theater, and a room with a single light. The theater tech students would change the set depending on the scene. Monica Wells, our leading man AlexDennison’sfiancee, isfounddeadinher apartment after her debut performance on Broadway. Last year, many stores were starting the holiday shopping early, opening on Thanksgiv-ing Day. Now, Should Thanksgiving be relegated to an afterthought? That seems to be the opinion of the people who camp out at Best Buys in the hopes of nabbing the best deals at 12:01 AM. There are more people shopping on Cyber Monday. on Cyber Monday 2014, more items were bought. However, on that same day, less money overall was spent. People are getting better deals. Be smart with your money, buy the better deals. Shop online.

The spirit of giving is replaced with the spirit of buying. Christmas has become the ultimate capitalist holiday. With customers spending over $700 each, it is not hard to see why Christmas has become the high holy day of consumerism. Peopleinoursocietydefinethemselves from what they buy, not what they do. We have been told that consumer goods are a token of one’s love for another. Aggressive corporations helpfuelthefiresofcapitalismthatare especially present during the holidays. Recent schedule changes haven’t taken everyone by surprise, unless you count all of those who were affected when one of our fellow teachers left. Early in the year, everythingseemstogowrong;butthisyear, theseschedulechangestooklongerthanusual to sort out. At the beginning of the school year, many students saw a change in the way ourschoolorganizesassignments.WithInfiniteCampusupandrunning-well,sortof, we had a new layout, and because of this, not as much time to ensure that all of

the schedules were correct. This made lots of trouble for teachers and students as we tried to work through all of the problems. Most students ended up with at least one schedule change. After some time, some students had up to sev-en different schedules! These changes not

only affected us by moving around a lot, but they made it so that some classes changed fromB-daystoA-days(andvise-versa).Thismeansthatsomepeoplecouldhavemissed an extra day of certain classes. Iaskedournewestcounselor,Ms.Venenga,abouttheproblemsthatwehadandmanyofthemhadtodowiththenewsystemInfiniteCampus.Alotoftheproblemswere from students who didn’t choose the classes that they wanted last year, causing more problems for all of us. With the recent introduction of Infinite Campus to CCSD, many staff and students have joined arms with similar complaints. Although many students and teacher complain, there are some who enjoy the new features. When Infinite Campus was introduced to CCSD, it seemed there were an in-finite array of disasters. There were many problems with entering grades, schedules, and taking attendance. While interviewing different teachers and students, the findings were that the tech teachers, computer based classes, had an easier transition from parentlink to In-finite Campus. Mrs. Pavesich said her experience with Infinite Campus has been “really fine, it just takes some getting used to.” Freshman student Ani Davidheayan says that “Infinite Campus is really com-plicated, and some people can’t log-in at home. I do like, however, how it shows all the assignments on the website.” Lindiana Bojku, a freshman, said “Parentlink took weeks to update grades, but infinite campus updates with the click of a button. Many people seem to like this feature, mainly teachers.

Infinite Disasters?By Hannah Polyak, Reporter

Teacher evaluations have grown very popular in the last couple years because teacher can get feedback on how they are teaching, whether its helping the students or not. In my opinion I think teacher evaluations are really helpful because of their teaching is not up to par it can affect the students in the long run, if a math teacher is not teaching the material properly then when the students moves up a level he or she will not be able to understand it as clearly, which will only cause more work for the students.Teachers evaluations are not always fair because some students don’t like their teachers so their evaluation might be a little bit bias. Iftheevaluationsarefairandtakingseriouslythenitcanbenefitboththeteachersandthestudentsequally. I also think that teacher evaluations can affect the way, the students study their material. The teachers can help make evaluations a little more anonymous, so that it can provide a little more security for the students that are evaluating the teachers.

Teachers Beware; Judgement Day

By Gabriel Gimiga, Reporter

Mr. Litterini and Mrs. Pavesich both said they updated grades everyday. They couldn’t do this with Parentlink because the grade-book was separate. Now everything is on one system. Mr. Litterini agrees with Mrs. Pavesich that it has been easy, but says “Like any new thing, it takes some getting used to.” Although there were many kinks in the beginning, things are starting to look up for the new grade system.

All around the classroom there are students with their heads down and teachers groggily teaching lessons. Everyday in school, there is an epidemic of drowsy students due to the start times that are too early for the average teenager (especially one going to a magnet school). We all know that how much we sleep affects how well we we do anything, but, preeminently in school. Every night, teens need between eight to nine hours of sleep. According to a studydonebytheSleepFoundation,15percentofteenstudentsreportedtoactuallygeteight hours of sleep each night. According to Dr. Raghu Reddy, UAMS Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist, you can’t catch up on sleep if you have lost over a few hours of sleep. Your body is only able to catch up on a few hours of sleep, so if you stay up late during the week you are not able to sleep in on the weekend to catch up on sleep. According to the Sleep Foun-dation, teens mess up their internal clock and hurt the quality of sleep by staying up late over the week and sleeping in late during the weekend. With so many after school things to participate in, such as work, sports, clubs, and other activities plus homework, students have a hard time getting to bed. According to the Sleep Foundation, most teens can’t go to bed before 11 p.m. For example, if you went to bed at 11 p.m. and woke up at 6:00 a.m. for school at 7 a.m., you would only get seven hours of sleep. What if school started at 8:30 a.m.? How much better would academic performance be? Hundreds of US schools have been

experimenting with start times at 8:30 a.m. and have noticed academic improvement in science, math, English, and social studies classes. According to the Baltimore Sun, the teenage brain cannot start learning until 10 a.m. What’s the point of starting school before our brains can turn on? Only one out of eight students at West said they felt like they got enough sleep every night. Even the American Academy of Pedi-atrics released a new policy recommending

that high schools and middle schools delay their start time to 8:30 a.m. or later. Schools need to start later for the best of students and their learning ability. West Tech should also adopt the policy of later start times.
