VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRIANING

Vocational education & training

Better education leads to a better-equipped workforce. With better education, more graduates will be able to fulfil the needs of local businesses. This sector offers qualified experts who can give advice about a wide range of projects within vocational education and training. These projects can be found at all levels, from vocational secondary education to higher vocational education at the Bachelor level.

This includes theoretical as well as practical vocational education. General education areas (basic education, high school education and academic university education) are not covered by PUM. The areas of education that are covered by PUM can be for private educational institutes as well as for public and government related ones. PUM assistance for educational institutes depends on the needs of the relevant industry. Companies or business support organisations that need a better-educated workforce can benefit from our expertise in various ways. We work with vocational institutes in developing new programmes for a specific profession or improving existing ones. Training can also be of interest for enterprises in the SME sector, e.g. in the form of workshops or symposia.

In short, this may ultimately lead to: better connections with local entrepreneurs; graduates that are better equipped to fulfil entrepreneurs’ needs; graduates finding jobs faster, adapting your educational programme to international standards, increased efficiency of your management, introduction to international contacts, possible exchange programmes and better brand awareness of your institution.

HOW CAN WE HELP SHAPE YOUR BUSINESS?

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATIONThe department of Business Administration (higher professional education) of a private University asked for advice about improving the quality of its education courses. The main goals were: create structural cooperation with enterprises, train teachers in student-activating methods and raise the international level. A four-year innovation project with ten missions, executed by different experts, was initiated. It resulted in, for example, the design and implementation of a structural practice project “professional tasks” in collaboration with enterprises, teachers and students, which offers enterprises real solutions for existing questions and problems; a well-trained team in new technological and didactical student-activating methods; international connections with universities; the start of an Incubator-centre and a Living Lab between enterprises, the government and the University.

CENTRE FOR TECHNOLOGY The company runs a small private institute for secondary vocational education in the field of technology. It aims to organise a new dual (learning & working) technical study (mechatronics). The industry endorsed the importance of teaching soft skills in the curriculum, besides the purely technical skills. A senior PUM expert successfully assisted in the development of a soft skills curriculum and a soft skills methodology. Furthermore, a method was developed to train the supervisors of companies to deliver proper guidance to students during their days of practical learning at the companies. Another PUM expert will assist the institute in developing the technical curriculum.

CREATING CUSTOMER HOSPITALITYThe company owns a moderate private hospital with 130 employees working in a variety of functions, enabling the entrepreneur to offer a broad range of services. The hospital wants to distinguish itself in terms of customer hospitality. Since up till now, there was no policy on this topic, PUM was asked to assist in improving the customer hospitality. So PUM sent an expert in the fields of communication and teaching. At the end of the two-week-mission, a large number of recommendations had been discussed and agreed upon. Others will be implemented over the next few months. COLLEGE OF COMMERCE A private college for vocational education (560 students) asked for advice on improving its financial management, as well as help in making its education more professional and improving quality assurance. A PUM expert with experience in both educational processes and managing institutes of vocational education was sent. It was soon clear that he had to focus on one aspect during this first mission. In consultation with the applicant, it was decided to focus on financial management. The expert read many of the college documents and discussed the on-going procedures with the principal, the accountant and the various heads of departments, staff members and students. Based on these consultations, the expert drew up a solid analysis and proposed a considerable number of changes in these procedures. These were discussed with all the stakeholders and after agreement had been reached, a list of recommendations, actions and timetables were put together. Agreements were made about all the tasks to be done and monitoring the results.
