If you missed this year’s conference you missed some fascinating talks. In the trendy new venue called The Midway, located in the Dogpatch area
of San Francisco, Carolina DeBartolo kicked us off with a discussion labeled Fitness, Firmness and Delight. In her talk she sited ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, whose design principles dating back some 2000 years are still relevant today. Vitruvius’ principals as she defines them—Fitness, Firmness and Delight—translate to useful, usable and desirable. Without any one of these elements, in any proportion, a design goes from good to bad.
Her message seems relevant as today’s designers consider the entire user experience. Maybe nothing has changed?
Carolina was followed by Dava Guthmiller of Noise 13 who brought on a panel of her own clients to discuss How we Experience Food as Users and the relationship to Good Design. Again, it’s about the user experience and how life and style are used to build a lasting design.
Mark Holmes took us on a journey through his career as he discussed Using Design as a flotation device. He demonstrated a fascinating parallel experience to how technology and design aligned and have influenced opportunities. Starting on a Mac 2 designing newspaper sell sheets he migrated to designing games in the mid-90s, and later to Pixar to Google.
He took us through the process of color choices for the Pixar movies and how they were chosen to reflect specific emotions at an unconscious level.
Daniel Dejan from Sappi returned to our conference once again with a fascinating talk on the overlook sense of touch and how it affects the brain. He went on to examine how media shapes the brain, and consequently the way a brand is perceived. This is undoubtedly something we are bound to hear more about in the future.
Kristy Cameron from Starbucks shared a lively talk of the process she used in redesigning a

global brand and how company values were a critical element to this process.
Other speakers included Jen Tank of Huge Design. She also referenced history as she mentioned Plato’s 2,400-year-old idea on the importance of beauty and the role of the designer to remember why we do what we do. Tanner Christiansen discussed the myth that is inspiration. More on his topic was published on Medium and referenced in another article in VMA Digest. Elle Yaven helped us understand the value of creating awareness of our everyday habits and communications to get the best out of ourselves and others. And last but not least let us not forget the research that was shared by Megan
Slabinsky of the The Creative Group. It seems our industry is alive and thriving!
As we approached the closing of the day’s talks Michael Osborne and Jared Erondu compared notes on their careers as the legend and the millennial. They both left us amused and awed by their observations and accomplishments.
After an inspirational day that fired up creativity, an evening of fun and fellowship was in order. Guests and exhibitors mingled, greeted old friends and colleagues and made new ones.

Most CEOs will agree that it is important to periodically get some distance from the day-to-day operation of a company to be
able to look at it with a fresh perspective. The Printing Industries of America President’s Conference offered just such an opportunity during its run March 6-9, 2016 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert. The President’s Conference returned, after several years’ hiatus, in response to strong peer demand for a program designed specifically for industry business leaders to discuss topics that matter most to them and the chance to network in a casual environment.
Over 175 printing industry CEOs, owners and financial executives attended the “new” President’s Conference, which ran under the banner “Ignite the Leader in You.” In addition to high-profile keynote speakers, attendees could choose from three breakout topic tracks —Leadership, Business Development and
Finance. Following a promise to deliver content specifically developed for print leaders, many sessions featured printing company executives who could “walk the talk” of running a successful business. The finance track was developed by the Printing Industry Financial Executives (PIFE) members and featured sessions focused on strategic planning, projection models and economic trends.
Before the conference proper, attendees were treated to an opening welcome reception on Sunday evening, followed by the RatPAC Supper Club, a fundraising event for the Printing Industries political advocacy program, PrintPAC. This fun event featured live music with a spot-on Sinatra impersonator to the excellent food and drink and unique “silent” auction, all to raise money for and awareness of, PIA’s PrintPAC.
The conference kicked off with an inspirational keynote by Catherine Monson, CEO of FASTSIGNS International on what it takes to be a successful leader and effect positive business transformation. Monson understands this firsthand, having taken the helm of the mature FASTSIGNS brand in 2009, during one of the worst recessions in the U.S. history, and managing to revitalize and restore it to market leadership in the signage and visual graphics industries as well as in franchising. Monson was featured in the television show “Undercover Boss” in 2012 and she shared some anecdotes from that experience as she provided practical advice and specific tactics on how leaders can further develop their own leadership strengths.
Jeffrey Hayzlett, primetime television host of “C-Suite with Jeffrey Hayzlett” and author of several bestselling business books, was another high profile keynote speaker at the conference. Hayzlett is the former CMO of Eastman Kodak Company and appeared as a guest judge on Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” The title of his session matched that of his most recent book as he admonished the audience to “Think Big, Act Bigger.” He detailed reasons some companies fail— fear, tension, risk and unkept promises—and offered advice on ways to convert those obstacles into a force for growth. An expert in creating a personal brand, Hazylett advised printers to build their own brand, to not settle but “stir things up” thus helping grow the industry overall.

Bob Danzig, former CEO of Hearst Publishing inspired the audience with a heart-felt keynote session entitled,“Discovering the Leader Within You.” Danzig talked about the inherent power in each person and how individuals can discover and bring these traits to the surface. Using no audiovisual presentation materials, Danzig walked among the audience as he delivered his address, often speaking directly with individual audience members. The session was widely feted, with one participant describing it as “authentic and genuine leadership training.”
Other keynote sessions included Dr. Colby Jubenville, author of the business book “Zebras and Cheetahs, Distinguishing Yourself From the Competition” who advised attendees to look differently at themselves and their business stay on the “inside” of the customer’s mind and industry. Two industry veterans, Jack Stoughton of Stoughton Printing and Peter Young of Digital Printing Systems (DPS) shared their insights on how to own your own business niche. Stoughton specializes in record jackets and Young’s DPS is a specialty ticket printer. The conference wrapped up with a talk from Dr. Frank Meza, MD who shared some sobering statistics on escalating healthcare costs and the reasons for it. Dr. Meza explained how the costs are impacted by unhealthy behaviors that lead to chronic disease and how to build a workforce health strategy.
In addition to the keynotes, attendees had the opportunity to attend any of three concurrent breakout sessions, including top-of-mind subjects, like how to work with younger, “Millennial” staff people. Many of the breakout session presenters were printing industry CEOs sharing their stories with their peers. One of these was Doug Rawson, President of Superior Lithographics, who brought some of his staff to be part of the program. They shared how the company, inspired by the PIA Continuous Improvement Conference, took the idea of the “suggestion box” to new heights, radically changing and improving the way the organization operates and how it now incorporates staff ideas in the running of the company.
Hassan Igram explained how his company, Cedar Graphics, broke into the packaging space and just what sort of investment it took to do so. He shared images of some very impressive, high end packaging work the company now produces for a growing list of packaging clients. Michael Makin, CEO Printing Industries of America, led a panel discussion on how to make 15% plus profits featuring three profit-leading company presidents, Bryan Hall, Graphic Visual Solutions, Ted Strauss, Suttle-Strauss and Jeff Ekstein, Willow Printing Group. Leslie Groene lead another panel on how to lead salespeople to success, featuring Peter Young, President of DPS and Gary Thormodsgaard, Vice President of Meridian Graphics.
The overall response to the new and improved President’s Conference was overwhelmingly positive. The 2017 President’s Conference is set for March 12-15 at the Long Beach Hilton. To learn more, visit www.printing.org/presidentsconference.

Tips for Sales Professionals Who Keep Learning!
STRATEGIC SELLING
VISUAL MEDIA ALLIANCE | CONNECTED | SUMMER 20169
1. Covet your time. Time is precious—only 86,400 seconds in a day. Average people waste most of those seconds in unproductive or unrewarding ways. Successful people manage their time efficiently. They are aware of how they spend it and make conscious choices to use it wisely whether to work, relax or regenerate with family.
2. Have a personal mission statement. Look at thought leaders for ideas and inspiration. Here are a couple of examples: I must do the most productive thing possible at every given moment. Here is mine: Inspire people to pursue the awesome growth. Successful people identify what they are about and make their choices accordingly.
3. Spend 5 minutes a day prioritizing. Without prioritization, it’s difficult to be efficient and productive. I suggest taking 5 minutes at the end(or beginning) of every day to sit down, assess and choose the 5 or 6 priorities for tomorrow so you can begin with
clarity. Successful people don’t squander effort and energy on unimportant issues.
4. Surround yourself with likeminded people. Wealth, status and accomplishment have their own rewards, but the more success you attain, the lonelier you can become, since others may no longer feel comfortable or relate to your lifestyle. Successful people are careful about who shares their time. They look for people with a similar outlook, who can help them grow emotionally and spiritually.
5. Be a follow up specialist. Many people talk a good game and then never deliver. Sometimes the cause is hypocrisy and sometimes it’s simply being sloppy and careless. Successful people do what they say they’ll do, and they pay close attention to detail so small issues don’t get neglected and become major catastrophes.
6. Take the best of the past to create the future. The world is full of shiny new toys and methods. It’s easy for humanity to get lost in the glitz and glamour of modern technology. Successful people embrace modern tools for communication efficiency and continue to use traditional and rare methods like handwritten thank-you notes to enhance connections.
7. Don’t be a lemming. If you are always heading the same direction as everyone else, you may move forward, but you’ll have little control of your destiny. Successful people often figure out what everyone else does only to do the opposite, which many times puts them ahead of the pack.
8. Keep a thick skin about rejection. For many each no is like taking a punch in the gut or a slap in the face. The way to get up and keep going is to remember that it’s just business. Successful people know that the key to getting life’s few brilliant “yeses” is to positively cope with the many “noes” you get on the way to receiving them.
9. Make others feel important. One of the greatest craving of most people today is recognition. Unfortunately, so many people are so tightly focused on their own status and problems they are ignorant to the needs of others. Successful people recognize, support and encourage others on their journey, which brings synergy, energy and satisfaction to all involved.
10. Strive for more. Sales Super Star, Tom Hopkins’ overall philosophy for success can be best summed up by his commitment on how to live life: “I commit to learn more, thus I’ll serve more, thus I’ll build more, thus I’ll earn more, thus I’ll save more, thus I’ll be able to bless others by giving more.”

VISUAL MEDIA ALLIANCE | CONNECTED | SUMMER 201612
Recently, California’s DFEH (Department of Fair Employment and Housing) issued a new brochure titled “Transgender Rights in the Workplace.” A few key points for employers to be aware of, include the following:
There are two kinds of gender transitions: physical and social. The former involves medical treatments. The other involves name change and pronouns, bathroom usage and activities. The employee does not need to be involved in any particular step in the transition to be protected. Employers need to structure their interview questions to be focused on the job being interviewed for, and avoid questions that inquire about sexual orientation, gender identity, reassignment surgery or transitioning procedures.
Dress codes and grooming standards should be non-discriminatory. The employer cannot judge the transgender worker more harshly than other employees in terms of compliance. Appropriate restrooms must be provided for all employees. An employee should be allowed to use the locker or restroom that corresponds to his and her gender identity, regardless of the employee’s assigned sex at birth. Employers can provide privacy and options for all employees and where possible, offer the option or a single-user or unisex restroom. However, the use of those bathrooms by transgender or other workers should be optional or voluntary, a matter of choice or preference.
If there are accommodations that you are asked for by transitioning or transgender employees and are unsure of how to respond, be sure to consult with qualified legal counsel before rejecting or refusing the accommodation. This was a hard lesson experienced by a check printing and financial services company, based in Minnesota. They were fined $115,000 and had to change their practices following an EEOC lawsuit.
Reminder: New Federal Exempt RulesOn May 18th, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) published a final rule changing the minimum compensation for exempt employees to $47,476 annually (indexed beginning in 2020) effective December 1, 2016. Note that the California minimum compensation is currently $41,760 annually and will rise to $45,936 January 1, 2017, and $50,112 January 1, 2018. Thus, the DOL standard will apply until 2018 at which point the California standard will govern because it’s higher. Both the DOL and California regulations have provisions defining the duties of employees who can be exempt from the payment of overtime. Since, the California regulations are generally stricter, they will usually apply. Care must be exercised in classifying employees as exempt because errors will lead to substantial back pay and penalty costs.
Do you have any employees who are either going to be deployed into active duty or veterans who currently are in the workplace? Recently, California’s department of Fair Employment and Housing issued a new fact sheet http://www.dfeh.ca.gov/res/docs/Publications/Brochures/2016/WorkplaceRights4MilitaryVeterans.pdf highlighting workplace protections available to those actively serving or who have served the USA. Smoking Rules Changed by New LegislationThe New Laws:• Treat the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices
that contain nicotine as “smoking” – thus extending existing smoking bans to cover such products.
• Expand smoke-free workplace protections by getting rid of most of the existing exemptions that permitted smoking in certain work environments, such as bars, hotel lobbies, warehouse facilities and employer-designated smoking break rooms.
• Expand the workplace smoking ban to include owner-operated businesses.
• Raise the minimum smoking age from 18 to 21, except for active military personnel. Other legislation passed as part of the package
related to tobacco-retailer licensing fees and to expanding tobacco prevention funds to charter schools.
Because these measures were enacted as part of a special session of the legislature, they generally take effect the 91st day after the special session’s adjournment – which was June 9 in this case. An employer’s duty is to provide a safe and healthy work environment so check your employment rules and regulations regarding tobacco use and be in compliance with the expanded laws on smoking.
