Village of Shadows Evaluation

What did I learn about filming?• Have to film several takes of the same shot to make sure you get at least one that is suitable.• Make sure lighting is suitable and there is plenty of visibility.• Try to get a range of different camera angles .• Have a shot list organised before hand and locations so that we know what exact shots we need to get.• Make sure the actors have instructions and that they know what action they need to do.• When filming, you may need to alter the composition or camera position slightly either depending on location, or it might be a better looking shot.• Keep camera rolling a bit before you tell the actors ‘action’ and a bit after they finish, to make it easier to cut down when editing.

What did I learn about editing?• Need to cut footage down into separate shots from the previously decided shot list so you can combine it together in a sequence.• Might not always go according to the shot list – it may turn out differently.• Have to get action in time with sound effects and music, so if you move a shot slightly, you have to make sure you move it all so they match up.• Transitions – How to choose the right transition for the genre and style of the film trailer, and what looks right with the shots.• Music – inserting key frames within the section of music to alter the volume throughout the sequence.• I learned about making titles in after effects, how to create titles that wipe across each other – also the ‘eyes’ sequence where we had to change the opacity of certain areas and cut the image so that just the eyes were showing.• The pace of editing within a trailer normally speeds up near the end

What did I find challenging?• Creating the titles of the name of the film and date in after effects – getting the timing right was difficult because it doesn’t play back in after effects in real time. It was also a complicated procedure when after effects is new to you and you don’t know how to alter various aspects and add effects to what I am creating• Although I wasn’t actually doing the filming myself, there was a lot of changing the setting to alter the light, as in outdoor locations we do not have the access to lighting equipment etc.
