GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT YORK HIGH SCHOOL

York High School is an 11-16 mixed comprehensive school of approximately 800 pupils which opened in September 2007. In January 2009, we moved to our site on Cornlands Road where we are housed in an £18 million school and leisure facility fit for purpose in the 21st century.

As a community school, we work in partnership with the local authority, ensuring our school and buildings are at the heart of its community. We have excellent sports facilities on site including climbing centre, fitness suite, dance studio, sports hall and all weather pitch, as well as our 6 lane swimming, learner and hydrotherapy pools. Our drama and recording studios, well-appointed classrooms, modern learning resource centre, excellent ICT facilities, café style catering amenity, and central atrium offer our pupils the very best environment in which to learn and develop as individuals and as a school community.

York High School is committed to using international links to raise aspirations and broaden the experiences of young people. We have links with schools in Tanzania, Uganda and Holland, and we used the 2012 Olympics to become the lead school in York for the International Inspirations Programmes. This year we are supporting residential trips to France, Belgium and Spain. We want our pupils to understand, and experience first-hand, the importance of our global community and the contribution they can make as citizens in a rapidly changing world.

Our school is situated on the west side of the historic city of York and is part of the City of York Local Authority which is small but very successful. Schools across the city work together in community and learning partnerships. We work closely with our partner primary schools in the West of the City.

MATHEMATICS TEACHING TEAM

Curriculum Vision

The Mathematics Team at York High School expect very high standards from all our pupils. We aim to foster and develop the potential of every student and promote a positive attitude towards Maths. By encouraging an ethos of self-motivation, confidence and challenge we aim to develop the key skills young people will need for the future. The team plays an important role in supporting whole school targets. Outstanding teaching, early identification and intervention is the key to pupil achievement in the subject area. Pupils have the opportunity to sit GCSE examinations early and the option to study GCSE Statistics.

In order to reach our goals we place a huge emphasis on target setting and the monitoring of work throughout the year. Extra-Curricular activities including Year 7 and 10 coaching, UK Maths Challenge, Stock Market Challenge and Year 8 Team Challenge flourish within the team’s programme.

All pupils in Maths are setted in both key stages. Within each ability band all teachers follow a common scheme of work ensuring that pupils’ experience of Mathematics is similar irrespective of grouping. At KS4, pupils follow the Edexcel Linear Maths Syllabus.

Buildings and Resources

The team is housed together, to ensure all members of the team are fully supported in their roles and have their faculty work room where they can plan together, sharing ideas and resources. The faculty teaching bases are all equipped with interactive whiteboards and projectors. We have a wide range of resources available to staff including books, worksheets and subject based software.

CPD Opportunities

We are committed to CPD and all efforts will be made to support the successful candidate in his/her personal professional development. Faculty members are encouraged to discuss personal CPD needs at their annual review meetings.
