The great news is, our website has changed. It’s been redesigned and is much more user friendly and interactive. If you haven’t already visited, you really must give it a go and do leave a comment and ‘like’ our articles. You can enter our competitions through it too. So go and have a look.

We say a big hello to Fordingbridge this month. It was a New Year decision to move towards Salisbury with our distribution. It’s a big step for a small company, but we have found Fordingbridge very welcoming and are pleased to have been so well received. You’ll find a lovely feature on the town on pages 17-21, plus an interview with the mayor on page 16.

Another huge change to the magazine is the property section at the back. All thanks to our industrious account managers for making this happen. This section will really give you a new perspective on the area, as you can now catch up with how property prices are behaving. When visiting agents, please mention you saw our new property feature.

On not such a high note, we said goodbye to Kris last month, who has been a dedicated editorial assistant with mags4dorset since he left school. He did have a short break from us, but came back because he loved the job so much. He’s working much closer to home now, but you may see his name pop-up occasionally because he’ll still be submitting articles here and there. We wish him well in his new job and thank him for all his hard work in the past.

Aren’t the bulbs in a muddle this year? They don’t seem to be following the usual order of appearance. All my daffodils sprang up before the snowdrops, and the tulips joined in the melee too, so did a few bluebell shoots. I didn’t know what was going to flower first, but the snowdrops just pipped the daffs to the post on 3 February. Have a good month and I will speak to you again soon.

With a new office in the heart of Ferndown, the independent hearing aid centre, Digitone has relocated from Verwood. The Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Terry Cordery, officially opened the premises on 21 January, 2013 during an open day.

Managing Director, Mike Stanley, has been an audiologist for 25 years and started his own business, Healthy Hearing, 11 years ago. He took over Digitone in September 2012, which has another branch in New Milton.

The new Hearing Centre in Penny’s Walk is close to shops, the library and the post office and easily accessible if travelling by bus.

It’s that time of year again. 2013 is the 11th year that 2nd Verwood Scouts have been delivering bedding plants and baskets to the people of Verwood and Three Legged Cross.

All the plants are supplied by a top local nursery, cost less than at most local garden centres and are delivered early in May.

to provide adventurous activities as well as weekend and summer camps. You can have a beautiful garden this summer and help the local community at the same time.

Can you make a difference?Host families are required for one month by the Ringwood Silver Birch Link of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

People from Belarus still live in the shadow of the radiation dispersed over their country 27 years ago as a result of the reactor explosion at Chernobyl.

The Ringwood link flies a new group of 9-12-year-olds to England every year for a respite break. A month away from the contamination not only improves their immune system, but has been proven to extend their life expectancy by up to two years.

During the month, group activities are provided for the children with the opportunity for host families to join in at weekends.

AFC BOURNEMOUTH’S striker, Matt Tubbs, opened a state-of-the-art 3G all-weather sports pitch in Verwood in dramatic style on 27 January, 2013. The football ace kicked a ball at a goal to release black-and-white balloons into the air.

The opening ceremony included speeches from Mike Fry, chairman of Verwood Arts & Leisure Association (VALA), which will manage the pitch, and Cllr Spencer Flower, leader of East Dorset District Council, which gave support from the Verwood Contributions Fund for the building of the facility at Potterne Park.

The pitch will provide a football and rugby small-sided match and training facility and is one of three new facilities being provided in Verwood following successful negotiations by the council to sell Verwood Leisure Centre to Morrisons for an extended supermarket. The sale has funded a new state-of-the-art 50-station gym extension being built at Verwood Hub and a new sports hall, which is under construction at the Emmanuel Middle School for use by the school and the public.

At the opening, Mike Fry said, “We are very pleased to receive this new facility. It will make a great difference, particularly to the younger players here. It has taken us a while

to get here but, working in conjunction with East Dorset District Council and Verwood Town Council, it’s great to see it all come together.”

Cllr Spencer Flower added, “This has been a good example of partnership working between the district council providing funding and support and the work of VALA and volunteers from the local community. The developments in Verwood will improve the sport and fitness facilities in the district and help us to meet our objectives to improve opportunities for young people in the area to live healthy and successful lives.”

Following the opening ceremony, young players from Rossgarth Youth Football Club had a chance to try their skills in a competition, shooting penalty kicks at Matt Tubbs in goal. The winner was Joe Buss who took away a football signed by players from Bournemouth FC.

Have a laugh with the U3AVerwood University of the Third Age (U3A) will be entertained by guest speaker the Rev’d Timbrell at the local United Reformed Church. Dr Matt Doggett took a packed room of over 100 people on an incredible underwater journey at Moors Valley Country Park on 1 February. Speaking at a special preview of the British Wildlife Photographer Awards exhibition,

Matt, who took the overall winning shot, showed a wide range of his work, from meerkats in South Africa to the first photograph of a snakelock anemone shrimp in Britain – discovered tucked under Swanage Pier.

Matt’s winning image was shot underwater off the coast of Scotland, and depicts the clean lines of the gannets as they dive for mackerel. Following his still presentation, he treated his audience to a short video filmed underwater at exactly the same time as the winning photograph. The scenes of underwater rivalry showed just how difficult it must be to capture one striking image amongst such a stream of non-stop action.

Matt’s advice to would-be wildlife photographers struck a chord with many in the room, “Learn to expect the unexpected, and if you can, be prepared for it!”

Ninety stunning images of British wildlife, including Matt’s award-winning ‘Gannet Jacuzzi’, form the British Wildlife Photographer Awards exhibition and can be seen at Moors Valley Country Park until 17 March. Following the closure of the New Forest District Council (NFDC) office in Provost Street in Fordingbridge, the town council has taken over the information service.

Operating from Kings Yard, the new ‘one stop’ for all enquiries offers a range of information and advice on town council services, New Forest District Council services and visitor information.

The Mayor, Cllr Malcolm Connolly, said, “I’m delighted that the town council has joined in partnership with New Forest District Council to continue to provide an information service in Fordingbridge. It is vitally important, not just to residents in the town, but to those residents who live in the outlying parishes as well.”

Remember last month that I introduced you to the Osborne Centre at West Parley, which is the hub of activities for the local branch of the MS Society.

This single storey building was purpose built in 1985, although five extensions have doubled its original size.

Facilities include a general day/dining room, quiet room, coffee lounge, computer room, gift shop, hairdressing salon, craft-room, consulting room and a physiotherapy suite.

For a minimal charge, people with MS are welcome to use the facilities, which are available Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We are a large branch, covering an area in excess of 200 square miles. From Upton in the west, all of Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and New Milton in the east, we then stretch north to pick up Ringwood, Verwood and Wimborne.

Members, unable to transport themselves,

are picked up from their homes in one of our eight wheelchair adapted vehicles and brought to the centre by volunteer drivers and escorts.

On arrival, members are served tea or coffee with biscuits and are then able to enjoy centre activities or just sit and chat to their friends. Alternatively, there is a secluded garden and a quite room in which to relax.

Lunches are prepared and cooked on the premises and served at around 12.30.

At all times fully trained care agency staff are available for personal needs whilst volunteers will serve, feed and generally look after our members.

You may have noticed that the word ‘volunteer’ keeps appearing. With the exception of our branch administrator, cook and the physio staff, volunteers run our branch.

Floral Decoration donations

March is on its way with the promise of some some sunny days. It’s the month for sowing seeds, a general tidy up and some essential pruning.

Pruning is not only therapeutic for plants, but gardeners as well – getting rid of all that dead wood and preparing for new growth and flowers. You need to remove dead, diseased or damaged stems from roses. Shrubs

and climbers will also need pruning to encourage good, healthy growth.

Seed sowing should be at the top of your ‘to do’ list. Give seeds soil that is wet and warm enough and off they go, and the bigger the seed the deeper it needs to be in the soil to germinate. Some seeds can be sown direct into the ground, such as vegetables, whilst some prefer to be in seed trays and a slightly

warmer environment, such as a greenhouse, to be given a good fighting chance.

For a bit of instant colour you could think about a hanging basket. A simple garden solution for March is to create your own hanging basket in the colour scheme of your choice, mixing hardy annuals with small evergreen shrubs for all year round interest.

A plant perfect for winter baskets and containers is the Vinca, which is part of the periwinkle family. Vinca minor is also a favourite with gardeners for providing ground cover and can be planted in smaller beds and borders. It’s a great way of providing cover for poor, dry and slightly shady garden areas and its creeping and arching stems soon make an attractive carpet of bright green foliage. The small sky-blue flowers appear in spring and Vinca will grow in most soil types but like most other plants, requires good drainage.

A new chairman for Wimborne in Bloom has been elected for the first time in 20 years.

Richard Nunn was voted in at Wimborne in Bloom’s annual meeting on 28 January 2013. He succeeds Anthony Oliver MBE, who felt the time was right to take more of a back seat. Anthony stands down on a high note after the town won gold in the National Small Town Title of Britain in Bloom last year. It also received silver gilt in the regional

competition. Anthony thanked everyone for all the help and support he’d been given since Wimborne in Bloom’s inception in November 1992.

Richard Nunn said, “I must convey the very sincere thanks of the current committee members, and their predecessors, to Anthony for his unwavering leadership, and both Anthony and Christine for their sheer hard work over the last twenty years. Taking Wimborne in

Bloom from its inception, through an illustrious two decades, to the ultimate achievement of a national RHS Britain in Bloom title is quite remarkable. What an example – and an almost impossibly hard act for anyone to follow.”

During the meeting it was reported that a successful fund raising year had grossed a little over £18,000, but with expenses being in excess of £19,000, the committee had to draw on its reserves.

Ringwood Guides ‘Big Build Fund’ and Ringwood Vineyard Church have each received a £300 boost thanks to the Ringwood Floral Decoration Society. The cheques were presented by the president of the society, Mrs Dorothy Brown at the AGM in January. The money, which was raised throughout 2012 for the two local causes, will go towards renovating the Guide’s premises and to help families in distress

in the Ringwood area. Also at the AGM, Mrs Margaret Lupton was presented with a camellia plant for her 18 years service as treasurer of the club.

Ringwood Floral Decoration Society’s next meeting is at Greyfriar’s Hall on Thursday, 28 February, 2013 at 2.15pm, and will be a demonstration by Anne Marie Dicker entitled ‘As time goes by.’ New members and visitors are welcome.

Will the company be expanding?Yes. We will be increasing our staff and will be employing another secretary.* We may also require a further surveyor shortly, as we are so busy.

As you have been in the profession for almost 30 years, you must have seen a lot of changes? I started in this area in 1985, and the majority of East Dorset District (including Verwood, St Leonards, St Ives, Ferndown and up as far as Sixpenny Handley) was in my designated ‘patch’ at the Valuation Office. I therefore watched as the area grew rapidly, as estates such as the bungalows in Acacia Avenue and Laburnum Close, Verwood and the houses in Whitfield Park, Ashley Heath were being built.

In St Leonards, St Ives and Ashley Heath, there was a progressive change in the planning policies, allowing higher density development than previously permitted. Over the years, I have carried out many valuations for new development schemes. I also watched the exclusive houses being built in Ashley, on the south side of the A31.

Since then, there have been many more new developments, and they keep on coming, with Barratt Homes having

just completed the Fairwood Place flat scheme in Brock Way, Verwood.

I have lived in Verwood and Three Legged Cross since 2001, and have seen several alterations to the town’s road infrastructure – such as the crossroads in the centre and the addition of the Home Farm Road bypass – as well as the construction of new buildings such as the Old Potteries shops and offices, and The Hub.

The business has been operating for a few months now and the students are keen to promote their products and services until the Enterprise Challenge Awards this month.

Bournemouth is investing in improving the lives of looked after children by expanding its adoption and fostering services.

The council is growing its children’s social care services with the addition of a number of new social work posts for fostering, adoption, and child care social work. One of the key aims will be to recruit more adoptive parents and foster carers from Bournemouth and surrounding areas to care for looked after children.

An investment is also being made to set up a small, dedicated, social care team responsible for looking after children and young people currently in private foster care. This includes the large number of language students in the borough living with host families. The new team’s job will be to ensure these children and young people are given suitable and safe placements.

Gill Bishop, Service Manager for Bournemouth’s Children’s Social Care said, “We currently have 246 looked after children in Bournemouth. With this new recruitment drive, one of our key targets is to increase the number of foster carers in the town. By doing this, we will be able to give more children high quality placements in the local area, providing stability and avoiding the disruption of having to move schools and lose friends.”

The Verwood Afternoon TG celebrated its 32nd birthday in January with a large cake made and iced by members Mona Davis and Doreen Knowlden. The sweet voice of Linda Sambrook entertained members with popular songs from over the years, along with a raffle and a sale of hand-made jewellery and greetings cards.

A total of £781 has been raised for charity over the past year. The guild now looks forward to another busy and successful year.

Founded by Andy and Jenny Clarke, in 2009, Woofability has been working hard training dogs over the past three

years and the charity is now forging partnerships between these beautiful, skilled animals and disabled people in the area.

I had the pleasure to meet Tracey Feltham from Alderholt who has been successfully partnered with a Woofability assistance dog.

Tracey is only in her early forties, but has suffered with back problems for the past 15 years, and in 2003 underwent spinal fusion treatment. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a long-term condition that causes chronic pain all over her body and a heightened and painful response to pressure. She also

has calcification around her right hip.

Even simple things like bending to pick up something she’s dropped can be unbearably painful. And walking distances isn’t an option, she has to use a wheelchair.

“I’m lucky that I have a loving family,” says Tracey. Her children Lauren and Louis are now teenagers. “The worst part of the condition is that I’ve never picked up my son and done normal things with him,” she says. Though her husband, Colin is very supportive and in her own word, “Wonderful,” Tracey was finding that coping with so much pain on a daily basis, was giving her very little to smile

about.Enter Sunny. A two-and-a-

half year old golden retriever with special powers.

The partnership between Sunny and Tracey began last

December and Tracey’s life has turned around. She said, “I can’t believe the difference Sunny has

made. She helps with simple things like bringing me the mail, fetching the newspaper, helping to load and

unload the washing machine and helping to undress me at night. If I drop something, she picks it up and she is very gentle, extremely well behaved and goes everywhere with me. When we go to the bank, she presses the entry pad to let me in and if I stop for a coffee, she will even take my purse to the counter to pay. She is amazing.

“Having Sunny has also taken the pressure off my husband considerably. He used to ring me throughout the day to check I was all right, but now he knows that Sunny’s looking after me.”

The golden retriever has fitted in well with the family, but her main focus is Tracey and I observed how attentive Sunny was. Even when at rest, she seemed to have that sixth sense to know exactly when Tracey needed her.

“She bonded with me really quickly,” says Tracey, “She is such a poppet and part of the family, but if I do have any worries, however small, I just ring Woofability. They are so helpful. Andy and Jenny are very inspirational people.”

Woofability provides other support too and covers the cost of Sunny’s vet’s bills and her food.

As I got up to leave, Tracey dropped her glasses on the floor and true to her breed, Sunny retrieved them for her.

“That’s the wonderful thing about Sunny,” Tracey beamed as she took her glasses back. “She makes me smile.”

Vehicle crime on the rise in Dorset

BLEAK OUTLOOK FOR FURZEHILL COUNCIL OFFICES The Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership has made an announcement about its accommodation needs following speculation about its future plans.

An officer working group has identified that the best option for the partnership is to have the majority of staff located in the current civic offices in Christchurch with a smaller civic hub to be built in Wimborne, and to dispose of the existing offices at Furzehill.

David McIntosh, Chief Executive of the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership said, “The decision for Christchurch and East Dorset Councils to share services has proved to

be a sound management decision. It has provided, and continues to provide, savings which have allowed both councils to set balanced budgets.

“However, the pressure on future spending and the shift of financial risks from central to local government means that we need to look at further ways to reduce costs. We also need to make sure we develop efficient ways of working, suitable for the 21st century.

“It makes sense for the majority of our staff to be located in one building, both economically and in terms of efficiency. The cost our two main buildings is increasing as they age and, having looked at the obvious options, the one

we are suggesting is the most suitable.”

The civic offices in Christchurch would continue to provide customer services and the Christchurch Council chamber would be retained.

The Wimborne civic hub would also house customer services, as well as a council chamber for East Dorset, community meeting rooms and a number of workstations for staff when working in East Dorset. Customer access will be improved by locating council facilities close to public transport routes and car parks.

“Although we will be reducing our costs, there would be no intention of

reducing services to the public in either council area as part of any accommodation changes,” added David McIntosh. “Each of the two councils would be maintaining its sovereignty and will continue to meet and make decisions, which are in the best interests of their respective areas.”

The partnership board, that oversees the development of joint working between the two councils, has agreed that this is the best option and has asked officers to prepare a report to go to each council’s Resources

Committee seeking approval to carry out further feasibility work on the preferred option.

Once detailed feasibility work has been completed, the proposal will be the subject of a further report with a view to its recommendations being implemented. No specific timetable has been drawn up as yet, but implementation could be around three years away.

The council has pledged to keep its members, staff, residents and the general public fully aware of any plans as they develop.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) road cycling event takes place on Sunday, 28 April in Dorset. There are four different options with 25, 50, 66 and 100 mile circular routes. Individuals, teams and families can all take part. Participants can start the bike ride any time between 8am and 10am at Queen Elizabeth’s School, Wimborne. Entry fee £15 for adults and £5 for under 16s

Jo Trussell an aspiring sports star from West Moors has received a legacy award from West Moors Parish Council.

The award, of up to £1,000 for a rising sports star aged 11-17, was offered by the parish council to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games in London last year.

Joe is the National Junior Jitsu champion and is due to take part in the Jitsu International Championships in Edinburgh in 2013. He trains at the Ferndown Jitsu Club in the Heatherlands

Community Centre,and also helps to train the next generation by teaching mini jitsu to 4 to 7 year olds.

The formal presentation of the award took place on 30 January, 2013, at the Ferndown Jitsu Club where members of the council and invited guests were treated to a wonderful demonstration by young people of all ages. Joe received a certificate and trophy.

The chairman of the parish council, Cllr Penny Yeo said, “West Moors Parish Council would like to say a huge thank you to the Jitsu Club for such a wonderful

evening organised by John Hanrahan, the demonstration was absolutely amazing with so many talented young people. The demonstration was followed by a light supper sponsored by Synergy Housing.

“The parish council would also like to thank Phoenix Marble and Granite of West Moors for their kind donation of the marble base for the trophy.”

Pedal power for BHFThe number of thefts from vehicles across Dorset increased by 12.3% from April 2012 to 27 January 2013 - an increase of 355 offences.

Between 1 and 27 January there were 13 reported break-ins to cars parked at beauty spot locations across Dorset – including rural car parks in Cerne Abbas, Bridport, Blandford, Wimborne and Wareham.

Businesses using vans, trucks or lorries should take steps to reduce the chances of having diesel stolen from them. Ideally,

these vehicles should be parked inside buildings or in a secure compound overnight.

Chief Inspector Jared Parkin said, “It sounds simple, but the main thing I’d encourage motorists to do is to make sure they leave their vehicles securely locked. We are seeing lots of vehicles being broken into that were not even locked…“I would encourage tradespeople not to leave expensive tools and materials in their vans, even if they are securely locked.”

Advice includes:• Valuable items and shopping

should not be left in cars, either in view or hidden away

• Windows and doors should always be securely locked when vehicles are left

• Sat navs should not be left in cars and their holders and cables should not be left on display. Sat nav marks should not be left visible on the windscreen

• If a vehicle has an alarm, always use it – even if the vehicle is only going to be left for a short period of time

Dorset Police is encouraging motorists to take simple steps to reduce the chances of their vehicles being broken into.

Educated locally, Malcolm Connolly has lived in Fordingbridge for 30 years and was inspired to become a councillor nearly 10 years ago after being made redundant from a managerial position.

“I’d always been interested in local council work,” he said, “and after being made redundant, I wanted to work locally. Since becoming a councillor, I have never looked back. I enjoy every minute of the job. It taxes the mind and can be quite rewarding - having a sense of humour helps.”

To his credit, he has been elected as the town mayor for the last four years and in that role, as well as being an ambassador for the town, he chairs the council meetings. “It’s an honour,” he says acknowledging that his fellow councillors have such confidence in his leadership.

When I asked if he would like to stand for a fifth term, he didn’t give much away. “People should think of taking on the honour,” he said, “But not everyone has the time or wants to take the pressure of being chairman.” There’s a definite twinkle in his eye as he speaks, which seems to indicate that if he is proposed for a fifth term, he might accept.

Outgoing and gregarious, Malcolm likes to think that residents can approach him about any problems in the town. He’s been responsible for spearheading a new committee to look at the traffic issues in Fordingbridge.

The first meeting was on 29 January and one of the committee’s aims is to seek the help of county and district councils to formulate a long-term solution. “More stringent parking regulations may help,” Malcolm said. “We are also working with Disability Access and will be meeting with them in the second week of February to see where improvements can be made to make it easier for those with mobility problems.”

He is enthusiastic and proud of Fordingbridge, which is a busy place. “I’d like to think that all

factions are pulling together for the betterment of the town,” he says. The Fordingbridge Society and Avonway Community Centre are all very active as are the Business Forum, the Lions and the Rotary clubs. The events that run throughout the year are evidence of this.

“The Fordingbridge Festival organised by the Rotary Club is an annual event and last year it was spectacular,” he explains. “And the Moto-Guzzi cavalcade through the town held every August Bank Holiday Monday creates a real buzz. People come from all over to see the bikes and trikes and we get around 160 motorbikes taking part.

“Christmas in Fordingbridge with live reindeer was a first in 2012 and that went very well. We’re having a meeting soon to discuss the possibility of running it again this Christmas. We had a great response from the businesses to offset the overheads and we hope they will do the same again.I. N. Newman generously helped with the lights.”

There is a saying, ‘If you want something done, ask a busy person,’ and Malcolm Connolly doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet. As well as being the town mayor, he has just become the sub postmaster of Sandleheath Post Office.

Married to Marie, they have three children Eileen, Peter and John who have all grown up and flown the nest. But Malcolm and Marie like company around the house and have recently adopted two Yorkshire terriers, Pippa and Polly who were searching for a new home.

Malcolm Connolly is energetic, enthusiastic and approachable. Perhaps it is his enthusiasm that rubs off in the town because the day I visited, it was cold and bleak, yet everyone I met was polite, friendly and made me feel very welcome. The Fordingbridge Society was showing a film at the council offices and even invited me to join the audience.

On the fringes of theNew Forest and resting on the banks of the River Avon, Fordingbridge has been in existence for well over700 years.

Fordingbridge unwrapped

Its name was derived from the Great Bridge, constructed in mediaeval times, which was built upstream of the ford. With seven magnificent arches, this feat of engineering can be viewed in its splendour from the riverside

park. On a sunny day, the park comes into its own with a children’s play area and paddling pool (open during the summer). There are also secluded memorial gardens and playing fields within the recreation ground.

A visit to the park won’t go unnoticed by the ducks on the river. They will waddle as fast as they can to greet you to find out if you have anything worth eating. And the swans like to say hello too.

Local sports clubs using the field include the rugby club, and Fordingbridge Turks, one of the oldest football clubs in England, which was established in 1868.

Fordingbridge Town Council was established in 1878 with the town hall being built in the High Street the following year. It is a landmark building with a clock tower.

Also within the town, you’ll find a museum, which houses local history exhibits including some 9,000 artefacts collected by brothers John and Richard Shering. Situated in an old granary in Kings Yard, Salisbury Street, the museum is run by volunteers

Other iconic structures worth seeking out are the large bronze statue in honour of the controversial artist, Augustus John which features on the riverside near the Great Bridge and the church of St Mary the Virgin offering typical Norman characteristics. Both are within walking distance of the High Street.

Avonway Community Centre is a hub for local clubs and societies and the home of Stepping Stones, the only pre-school in Fordingbridge. Rooms at Avonway can be hired at a very reasonable rate.

ITTC was founded in 1984 to provide high quality English language teacher training courses. REWARDING AND EXCITING TUITION

Members of the school council at Trinity CE (VA) First School in Verwood recently visited the town council offices and met the mayor, Cllr Simon Gibson.

They wanted to find out how their local council functions. The mayor and the town clerk, Mrs V Bright, answered their questions, and the children gave information on their fund raising activities and explained how their school council meetings are usually run. One of the highlights was when the children were given the chance to try on the mayor’s robes.

There is a buzz amongst the pupils at Dumpton School in Wimborne. The all new Design

and Food Technology Department is being used at all levels in the school, as is the relined, covered swimming pool and the outdoor classroom. The 40 PC ICT Department has also

been upgraded and the four resurfaced tennis courts are now visible from space!

Last summer the school said goodbye to 41 Year 8 leavers who moved on to Canford, Bryanston, Clayesmore and Queen Elizabeth’s armed with an impressive 20+ scholarships.

Mollie Benson from Ferndown is an inspiration to us all. At the grand age of 90, she still visits her local gym, Ferndown Leisure, notonce,buttwiceaweektokeepfitandenjoyabitofsocialising.Since being sent to the gym under ‘Doctor’s Orders’ in the year 2000, Mollie and her two friends, Pam Morrell (72) and Pam Prendergast (78), both from West Moors, have met up almost every week to work out. Their trainer, Jo Sinclair, has been with them all the way.

Celebrating her 90th birthday last month was a milestone for Mollie, and Ferndown Leisure Centre presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Assistant Manager, Jason Knight said, “We think its fantastic that the little group started 13 years ago and are all still coming here. They are lovely people. Not many people of Mollie’s age are still using the gym, but she just goes to prove, that you are never too old.”

Ezi-Help Now AvailableHelp is available for local residents aged over 65 who are struggling to pay their fuel bills this winter. A variety of cold weather related support and services are being funded as a result of the Dorset Community Foundation’s “Surviving Winter” appeal. Grants are available to assist with paying fuel bills, heating repairs, extra support for lunch clubs, befriending schemes, help with transport, and emergency radiators for Dorset Fire and Rescue to deliver to any homes that do not have heating. This year’s appeal is also funding a limited supply of one kilogram tubs of Ezi-Melt de-icing salt for use on domestic paths. These will be distributed through local community groups across the county. Not only should smoking in cars be banned when children are present, it should be banned everywhere except in private homes.

Even outdoors, those nearby are subjected to unpleasant smoke and at outdoor events such as the Steam Fair, it is dangerous!

Young children are at the level of lit cigarettes being carried around, as well as being subjected to smoke - and even adults are at risk of burns.

Mother’s Day is a very long established tradition. The earliest celebration honouring mothers dates back to the annual spring festival of ancient

Greece dedicated to Rhea, the mother of the Gods. The Greeks would pay tribute with honey-cakes and fine drinks and flowers at dawn. Centuries on, Mother’s Day is still the biggest flower-buying day in the year in Britain: each year sales increase by an average of seventy per cent on a normal day’s trading.

Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, joined

a giant ‘bumble bee’ and campaigners from the environment charity Friends of the Earth in January, to draw attention to the alarming decline in UK bee numbers.

Annette was one of more than 125 MPs to show their support for Britain’s threatened bees. Last year, Friends of the Earth launched its Bee Cause campaign, which has been backed by more than 80,000 people and calls for the government to introduce a National Bee Action Plan aimed at saving our bees.

Annette Brooke MP said, “I am extremely concerned about the rapid decline in British bees. They’re not only an iconic part of our countryside; they play a vital role in pollinating our crops and flowers too. It is great news that Friends of the Earth are creating a buzz about these crucially important insects – I’ll be doing all I can to help protect our bees in 2013.”

A study last year found that if bees disappeared it

would cost British farmers at least £1.8 billion a year to pollinate their crops by hand - which would cause food prices, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, to rocket.

As part of the package of measures to support

economic growth, the government’s chief planner has recently alerted Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) in England of the government’s proposal for the forthcoming permitted development rights for change of use from Office (Use Class B1a) to Residential (Use Class C3) which will come into force in spring 2013.

This will mean that offices will be able to be converted to residential use without the need for planning permission. However, before conversion can take place owners/developers will be required to notify the LPA of their proposal to enable the authority to ensure that the proposal does not have any significant transport and highway impacts and/

or would not take place in safety hazard zones or areas of high flood risk and land contamination. Where those safeguards cannot be satisfied, planning permission will continue to be required.

The permitted development rights will only cover change of use. Any associated physical alterations or additions to the building, which currently requires a planning application will continue to need one.

This new permitted development right will come into force in Spring 2013 and run for a period of three years from the date of coming into force. At the end of that period the government will review the operation of the rights with a view to potentially extending those rights for a further period or indefinitely.

Director of town planning and development consultants Tanner & Tilley, said, “We have a number of clients who will be able to benefit from this relaxation of planning control and make good use of vacant or under occupied offices by converting them to residential accommodation, adding much needed housing to the local housing stock.”

The purpose of the government’s alert to LPAs is to enable them to consider whether there are any specific locations that should be exempted from this change, for example where there would be the loss of a nationally significant area of economic activity or substantial adverse economic consequences at the local authority level which will not be offset by the positive benefits the new rights would bring.

The SLS AMG Roadster is one of the most remarkable cars of its generation. As such this two-door beauty has a 6.2-litre (badged 6.3-litre) 571PS V8 engine that propels Haynes Manual lovers to

62mph in 3.8 seconds. It is hard to explain how that feels… but it makes most other “fast” cars look like tractors. Despite its immense power this beast is easy to drive gently. It is therefore a thrilling rocket for the track and a cosy cruiser for everyday conditions. And so it should be for £176,925. Extras such as ceramic brakes and carbon fibre mirrors propel its price tag beyond £200,000. How many manuals is that?

Right, let’s leave the tools behind and head to Sparkford. Leave Verwood on the B3081 to Sixpenny Handley then continue through Gillingham. Remember to enjoy the SLS Roadster’s thrilling exhaust note but best stay below its 197mph top speed. Then, join the A303 westbound to Sparkford and park our priceless machine somewhere very, very, safe.

The Haynes Publishing Company has been in Sparkford since the Sixties on the site of an old milk factory. Its first manual helped motorists disassemble and rebuild the Austin Healey “Frogeye” Sprite, which is a nice little car. Since then, the company has sold more than 150,000,000 manuals worldwide. Creating a guide typically takes a two person team three to six months. The process involves buying the vehicle, taking it to pieces, and rebuilding. Then comes writing and artwork. The car or motorcycle is then sold to a member of staff or the public. Haynes has also produced guides to the Starship Enterprise and Thomas the Tank Engine but - as of now - no SLS. That is not an invitation for you to disassemble ours.

But there is more to Sparkford than its Haynes Manuals. It also has an ancient church, a centuries old pub, and attractive houses. But could anything be more striking than the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster? Now – for the final time – put down that circular saw.

A) New rules which came into force on 21 December mean that insurers can no

The government is considering raising the speed limit on single carriageways for lorries over 7.5 tonnes. It could rise from 40 to 45mph, or to 50mph. The proposal is subject to a government consultation document that highlights both advantages and disadvantages. The consultation ended on 1 February.

Potential benefits include reduced congestion/frustration; reduced accidents; and a levelled playing field for freight operators. This is also thought to strengthen the economy by shortening journey times for freight operators, creating more time for extra deliveries which could make businesses more profitable.

Potential disadvantages include increased cost to Highways Agency/local authorities; more serious accidents; and environmental damage.

Roads Minister, Stephen Hammond said the government was “committed to doing everything it can to improve conditions for economic growth.” He said the consultation on increasing the single carriageway speed limit for certain HGVs had been held after listening to industry experts who say that this will boost the UK economy and businesses of all sizes, and added, “While this is likely to lead to more than £30M a year in benefits for businesses through quicker journeys and reduced congestion, I want to make sure we have carefully considered the evidence of all of the effects on the economy, environment, and of course road safety, before we make a decision.”
