WHEREAS: The purpose of this event is to celebrate the Korean Bilingual Culture and Language Art; and

WHEREAS: There will be songs sung in Korean by members of the Kindergarten and First grade classes; and

WHEREAS: There will be a Tae Kwon Do exhibition performed by students in the First through Fifth grades, with help from the Tae Kwon Do Institute; and

WHEREAS: The day will end with a group from Harvard University performing a Korean Fan Dance; and WHEREAS: This event will take place on Friday, May 3, 2002 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Morse

School Auditorium; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record recognizing May 8, 2002 as Korean Children’s Day and hope

WHEREAS: Senator Pryor has held this position for the past two years and has been the host to all public speaking engagements; and

WHEREAS: He and his wife, Barbara, will spend their golden years in their home state of Arkansas; and

WHEREAS: Dean Joe Nye and the staff and students of the Institute of Politics will be holding a reception to wish the Senator Pryor and his wife a fond farewell on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at the Loeb House in Harvard Yard; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of David J. Cushing on April 29, 2002; and

WHEREAS: David was the beloved husband of Mary (Sawdy) Cushing; and

WHEREAS: David’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his children David J. Cushing, Pauline Fichera and Jerilyn Foster; his twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS: David will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: This celebration will be highlighted by the thirty-sixth Stratton Dinner, which will celebrate the 101st Birthday of Dr. Julius Adams Stratton; and

WHEREAS: This dinner will feature a presentation of the Julius Adams Stratton Prize, which is awarded to eminent persons in the USA and Switzerland who exemplify the fruitfulness of the exchange of ideas and technologies between our two countries; and

WHEREAS: The 2002 Julius Adams Stratton Prize for Intercultural Achievement will be awarded to Her Excellency Faith Whittlesey, Former Ambassador of the United States to Switzerland, who for the past twelve years has served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Swiss Foundation in New York; and

WHEREAS: Ambassador Whittlesey is a Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude graduate of Wells College and holds a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS: From 1983-1985 Ambassador Whittlesey was a member of the Senior White House Staff directing the White House Office of Public Liaison; and

WHEREAS: This exhibit explores the complex relationship between the African-American community and the Massachusetts justice system from the colonial period to the present day; and

WHEREAS: Long Road to Justice is a multi-media journey through historical artifacts, photographs and court records from the past three centuries; and

WHERAS: This exhibit is sponsored by the Justice George Lewis Ruffin Society, named for the first black judge appointed in Massachusetts in 1883; and

WHEREAS: This exhibition offers a wealth of significant historical information about our criminal justice system; and

WHEREAS: This exhibit will be on display at the Edward J. Sullivan Court House in Cambridge on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at 1:00 p.m.; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Part of this special event will be a talk by Professor John Curtis Perry, the Professor of Japanese Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University; and

WHEREAS: There will be some wonderful entertainment by Associate Professor Makoto Takenaka, associate professor at the Berklee College of Music and an active performer at national and international venues, and the Jazz Trio from the Berklee College of Music; and

WHEREAS: This cultural event will take place at the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston on Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 6:00 p.m.; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of the City Council that the Greater Boston Buddhist Cultural Center will be holding a celebration in honor of Buddha’s Birthday; and

WHEREAS: According to ancient legend, when the Buddha was born, he was bathed in a shower from the heaven. The early disciples of Buddha started the tradition of “Showering the Baby Buddha Ceremony”; and

WHEREAS: The action of showering the Buddha statue with purified water reminds us to use Buddha’s teaching to cleanse our mind, cultivate our wisdom and benefit our society; and

WHEREAS: This ceremony is not only a 2,000-year-old tradition, but is the most important holiday in Buddhism; and

WHEREAS: The Showering of the Baby Buddha Ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 19, 2002 from 10:00 a.m. –12 noon; and

WHEREAS: Roger accepted an academic appointment with Harvard Medical School and worked on staff at Massachusetts General Hospital and later at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston; and

WHEREAS: At its annual Spring Concert on May 19, 2002, the Cambridge Community Chorus will feature the North American premiere of Luis Bacalov’s MISA TANGO, at which the composer will be present; and

WHEREAS: Misa Tango is scored for mezzo-soprano, baritone and bandoneon soloists, with mixed chorus and orchestra; and

WHEREAS: This performance, conducted by Music Director William Thomas, will feature Gale Fuller, mezzo-soprano, Robert Honeysucker, baritone and Hector Del Curto, bandoneon, an accordion-like instrument considered by many to express the soul of tango; and

WHEREAS: From the haunting lament of the bandoneon in the opening Kyrie, the ecstatic rhythms of the Gloria and the Milonga tempo of the Credo, to the plaintive cello/ bandoneon duet of the Sanctus and the final “Paz” of the Angus Dei, Misa Tango’s richly textured layers of sublime solo work-intertwined with dramatic syncopated choral parts and elegant tango rhythms played by bass and tympani—put dance and passion into the liturgy; and

WHEREAS: Misa Tango is a work based on the Ordinary of the Mass. The work is in Spanish and, by dramatically shortening the text, Bacalov is presenting a universal concept to the liturgy of the Mass. According to Bacalov, his aspiration is “to make room for those who do not necessarily share the same beliefs, emphasizing the aspects of God in the Mass which are common to Christians, Jews and Muslims; and

WHEREAS: Mr. Bacalov who was born in 1933 and is an Argentinean of Jewish ancestry currently living in Rome, won a 1995 Oscar and several European prizes for his score of Michael Radford’s film “Il Postino” Mr. Bacalov composes for cinema in both Italy and France, and performs and records actively as a pianist as well; and

WHEREAS: Mr. Honeysucker, the baritone for the May 19 concert, is recognized internationally and locally for his brilliant opera, concert and recital performances; the Boston Globe critic, Richard Dyer, honored Mr. Honeysucker in 1995 as “Musician of the Year;” and

WHEREAS: Ms. Fuller, the mezzo-soprano, is enjoying a career rich in concert, opera and oratorio; she has been hailed by critics for her rich, sumptuous voice, virtuoso coloratura and dramatic range; and

WHEREAS: Mr. Del Curto, the bandoneon player, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has traveled the world both as soloist and chamber musician, having shared the state with Astor Piazzolla and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall; now therefore be it
