There were spot prizes and games organised for the teachers. Mrs Joble Bijoy, Principal addressed the teachers and the students on this occasion. Grazielle Serrão compered the programme. Later, in the afternoon a lunch was hosted by the Management for the teachers. The students of the Pre-Primary Section celebrated teacher’s day on 4th September 2017. Tr. Melbina highlighted the importance of the day. All the children said a short prayer for their teachers. A few students of the Jr.kg and Nursery sang for their teachers and the Sr. Kg children danced to entertain their teachers. The programme was co-ordinated by Tr. Hilda Barbosa and Tr. Tresa Gomes of the Pre-Primary.

ID-UL-ZUHA (BAKR-EID) CELEBRATED Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id) is a festival that Muslims celebrate with special prayers, greetings and gifts. A special assembly on Bakri Eid was held on 1st September 2017 to mark the Id-ul-Zuha celebrations.

The teacher explained the significance and importance of the festival. The pupils of Jr. Kg. C depicted the chanting of prayers by the Muslims and performed a dance on this occasion.

The assembly was conducted by Tr. Suela.

TEACHER’S DAY On 5th September 2017 teacher’s day was celebrated at Vidya Vikas Academy. A Short programme was held at the school hall conducted by the students of class 10 and 12.

The program started with a short prayer service. Nicole Lourenco recited a poem on Teachers written by her for this special day. Earl Fortes of Class 12 sang ‘Perfect’ accompanied by Bradley Rodrigues and Aiman Nurany, which was followed by a dance performance by the students of Class 10. Falgun Mopkar and Anish Lobo of Class 10 composed two beautiful songs on ‘Teachers’, they were accompanied by Ronson Paes on the guitar and Pratik Sawant on the bass guitar which was followed with a dance performed by the students of Class 11.

There were spot prizes and games organised for the teachers. Mrs Joble Bijoy, Principal addressed the teachers and the students on this occasion. Grazielle Serrão compered the programme. Later, in the afternoon a lunch was hosted by the Management for the teachers.

INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE DEMONSTRATION AND LECTURE Directorate of Art and Culture conducted a Lecture / Dance Demonstration in Indian Classical Dance at Vidya Vikas Academy on 8th September 2017.

It was our school’s privilege to have a national fame Odissi dancer, Vani Madhav as the resource person. She gave a lecture cum demonstration of the Odissi dance form. It was a very interesting session as she interacted with the students and discussed about the similarities in various classical dance forms.

The students got a chance to seek first-hand knowledge about the dance form from the dance expert. The objective of this programme was to make the students aware of the rich Indian dance tradition and get them interested in learning different classical dances thereby strengthening our cultural values.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS BHARAT – FOOTBALL MATCH Special Olympics Bharat Goa, organized a four day football coaching from the 4th to 8th of September at Don Bosco School, Panjim.

Two students, Derick Rodrigues & Maxwel Cunha from Vidya Vikas Academy Resource Room were a part of the coaching. Coaches from all over India were invited to coach the special athletes and our boys were fortunate to be coached by them.

On the 8th, they had a league tournament and our boys won the 4th place in their respective teams. Our students have made us proud yet again.

BEHTAR SWACHHTA DRIVE – A BEHTAR INDIA CAMPAIGN To work towards the noble cause of Behtar Swachhta which is a part of the NDTC Behtar India Campaign, the students of Vidya Vikas Academy along with the Staff members undertook a Cleanliness drive at Paroda panchayat (Margao Goa) on 09 September 2017.

The staff members along with 51 students from Classes 6 to 8 with the co-operation of the Paroda Village Panchayat Sarpanch and Panch members took active part in the cleanliness drive.

Students took up cleaning of ward no 4 and 6 of the Paroda Village Panchayat. Garbage was separately collected in garbage bags and later handed over to concerned officials.

This initiative was highly appreciated by the Paroda Village Panchayat Sarpanch.

ELOCUTION COMPETITION AT MANOVIKAS ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL Students of Vidya Vikas Academy participated in the inter-school elocution competition, organized by Manovikas English Medium School, Gogol, Margao on Monday, 11th September, 2017.

The students who participated in Category I (Std. V, VI and VII) were Walusha Fernandes of Class 7B and Shaurya Jha of Class 7C.

Both participants spoke on different topics . While Walusha Fernandes, spoke on the topic “Is online learning just as good as classroom learning?”, Shaurya Jha spoke on the topic, “Texting destroys the English language.”

A total of twenty-six students from different schools, participated in the said competition.

The jury comprised of two judges. Even though our students did not win any prize, it must be noted, that they performed very well and with complete confidence.

Each of the participants received a participation certificate and came back from the event, enriched with experience.

ONAM CELEBRATION Onam is a major harvest festival celebrated in Kerala. It was celebrated at the Pre-Primary Section of Vidya Vikas Academy with great enthusiasm on September 13, 2017. Pookalam, a flower arrangement was made at the entrance to welcome the children.

The students of Nursery A, spoke and narrated the story of the Onam festival. The students also danced to the rhythm and tune of a Malyalam song.

The highlight of the assembly was the snake boat race. A few dishes of Onam Sadya like payasam, banana chips etc were exhibited. The assembly was conducted by Tr. Fiona.

HINDI DIWAS Hindi Day was celebrated by the students of Vidya Vikas Academy with great enthusiasm on 14th September 2017 to pay respect to the official language of India – Hindi.

A special assembly was held to commemorate the importance of the National language. Miss Anushka Mitra compered the assembly. Master Raj Faldesai explained the importance of the National Language for the integration and unity of India. Thereafter, students of Class 5C and Class 3 recited poems in Hindi.

Students of Class 7C presented a beautiful skit which was choreographed by Tr. Archana Verma. The girls of Class 8A presented a dance. The assembly ended with recitation of famous Dohe and slogans by the students of Class 9 and 10. Tr. Satya Sharma proposed the vote of thanks encouraging all to communicate in Hindi which will also help to promote and propagate the Hindi language as well as a patriotic reminder to the Indian population of their common roots and unity.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP PROGRAMME The NCC Cadets of Vidya Vikas Academy participated in the International Coastal Cleanup Programme on 16th September 2017 at the Colva Beach, Margao, Goa.

The beach cleaning programme was conducted under the able guidance of NCC Officer Sidharth Faldesai.

Such drives are a wonderful opportunity to sensitize students on the importance of cleanliness in public places.

NCC Cadets along with the staff members of VVA collected a large portion of garbage including the plastic and other waste materials and segregated it.

It was the encouragement from the Management of Vidya Vikas Mandal and motivation from the Principal and Vice-Principal which made the cadets take up this initiative seriously making this programme a grand success.

CLEANLINESS DRIVE FOR SWACHH BHARAT – SWACHHTA PAKHWADA

“Every road, path, office, home, hut, stream and particle of air around us can and must be kept clean” – President Pranab Mukherjee.

Cleanliness plays a vital role in our daily lives, be it in personal hygiene or setting a standard of environmental cleanliness to defend ourselves from infections diseases and viruses.

School is a place where one can learn so many things. It helps the students to grow up into a responsible citizen.

As part of the Swachh Bharat mission, Vidya Vikas Academy, Comba Tansor, Goa conducted the various activities listed in the Circular received from Central Board Of Secondary Education From the 1st to the 15th of September 2017. The details of the activities are listed below;

Cleanliness Drive and Activities The school conducted a cleanliness drive, where students along with the teachers cleaned the areas allotted to them in various parts of the school.

A meeting was called for parents to inform them about the importance of cleanliness and the disadvantages as effects of an unhealthy and unsanitary environment.

The Office staff and support staff were in charge of weeding out recordings of old files, record and remove all kinds of waste material like broken furniture, unusable equipment, defunct vehicles etc. from the premises of the school.

The NSS students of Class 6 to 8 propagated the message of Pakhwada, in a cleanliness drive that was undertaken in the village panchayat area of Paroda in the Kepem Taluka.

An essay competition was conducted for the students of 6 and 7. the topic for the Essay was ‘Importance of Cleanliness’.

The students of the Class 10 passionately participated in the debate on ‘Should garbage collection be charged?’ The Art teachers of the school conducted a Painting competition for the students of Class 8 and 9.

And finally the students of the Class 8 participated in a quiz competition, where the students were made to answer questions displayed on the LCD projector.

The activities conducted on and off the campus made a positive impact on the students who participated in these activities.

GENERAL AWARENESS TALK ON HEALTH AND HYGIENE

Vidya Vikas Academy conducted a General Awareness talk on Health and Hygiene for the girls of Classes 5 to 7, on 19th and 20th September 2017.

The Margao Urban Health Centre deputed Ms. Janice Merlyn Gracias, a health Counsellor and Staff Nurse Jereiva Afonso to sensitise the girl students of Classes 5 to 7 on maintaining a healthy diet and hygiene during the menstrual cycle.

The students were also explained about puberty period by the School Counsellor, Mrs. Wilma Alphonso. The talk concluded with an interactive Question and Hour session. Questions put forward by the students, were answered by the Resource Persons.

SESSION ON ‘CYBER SECURITY AND SAFETY’ The potential of Information Technology in today‟s world as a valuable learning resource is immense. However, if children use the internet without safety awareness, they may fall prey to illegal activity or abuse such as cyber bullying, fraud or something even more serious.

Keeping this in mind, the Computer Teachers of Vidya Vikas Academy conducted a session for the students of Class 1 to 12 on the topic “Cyber Security and Safety” based on the guidelines given by CBSE in the circular CBSE-Acad/JD-AHA/Cir/2017/ August 18, 2017, Circular No.: Acad-32/2017.

The session was conducted class wise to highlight the following: The importance of a safe and secure educational environment for effective teaching – learning and to discourage students from actions detrimental to themselves and their peers.

Students were informed about the inappropriate and illegal activity through IT enabled devices.

Students were made aware of the rule for the acceptable use of the Safe Internet Browsing and the installation of effective firewalls, filtering and monitoring software mechanisms on computers and how it has to be regularly reviewed.

The issue of various types of unsolicited contents available on internet was discussed with the students. Students were also informed about the various ways to block these contents with the help of parental control filters or antivirus of appropriate standards.

Students were informed about the secured websites for educational purpose to be accessed appropriate to their age group.

Use of email and social media was highlighted.

Basics of copyright, use of licensed version of softwares and obscenity on all forms of IT enabled devices was also discussed.

Students were reminded that carrying electronic communication devices including those that can store/record/play audio-visual content; transmit or receive images; or provide unfiltered connection to the Internet such as iPads, DVD/CD players, game consoles, handheld PC, smart phones, laptops, tablet or any other gadget with similar capabilities of data storage/transmission is not permitted in school.

The school Health and Wellness Teacher, Mrs. Wilma Alphonso in a session conducted for students of Class 5 to 10 briefed about the dangerous and addictive games available on the internet. The recent example of the deadly „Blue Whale Game‟ was highlighted. Students were explained about the dire consequences about this game and were advised not to install, download or play this game.

Overall the sessions were informative and fruitful. The students got to know a lot of information on the safe use of internet which they will surely put into practice.

STATE LEVEL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP Students of VVA have won 3 silver medals and 13 bronze medals in U-14, U-17 boys and girls swimming competition organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. It was held on 21st and 22nd of September at Campal Panjim Swimming Pool.

ACTIVITY FOR SEPTEMBER – CLASSES 9 AND 10 ANTI CRACKER CAMPAIGN – POSTER / SLOGANS Fire Crackers are a cause for air and noise pollution. It is observed that there are many health hazards caused by the pollution caused due to fire crackers. To make the children aware of the harmful effects of fire crackers, an activity of designing a poster with a slogan on Anti cracker campaign was conducted in the month of September for the students of Classes 9 and 10.

This activity was conducted in groups of four to five students from each of the respective classes. The students very enthusiastically participated and prepared posters and even wrote slogans. The students used colourful chart papers and made attractive posters to convey the message of the ill effects of crackers and therefore to curb the use of them during the festive season.

DUSSEHRA FESTIVAL CELEBRATIONS Dussehra also called Vijayadashami is celebrated as victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahisasura. The other significance was the war between Lord Ram and Ravana which went on for 10 days and Ravana was killed by Lord Ram on the tenth day that is Dusshera.

The special assembly on Dusshera was conducted by the students of Sr.kg B and Nursery C of the Pre-Primary section of Vidya Vikas Academy on 28th September 2017.

Tr. Fatima spoke on the significance of the festival. Tr. Melbina explained how the festival is celebrated. The story of Dusshera was enacted by the children of Sr.Kg B and Nursery C.

Dandiya and Garba was also performed by the children. All the children sang the ‘Aarti’ song. The assembly ended with the burning of the effigy of ‘Ravan’ to signify good over evil.

Mrs. Sheela Gaunekar, Chairperson and Manager of the school was present on the occasion. Mrs. Joble Bijoy, Principal also addressed the students and the teachers.

RAINBOW DAY Rainbow day was celebrated on 29th September 2017 by the pupils of the Pre-Primary Section of Vidya Vikas Academy to appreciate the beauty of how a rainbow is formed and the significance of the seven colours in a rainbow.

The special assembly was conducted by the pupils of Sr. Kg A and Nursery B. Pupils of Sr.kg A enacted the formation of the rainbow by walking in with coloured dupattas depicting the colours of a rainbow. Tr. Loretta spoke on the significance of the topic, followed by a song sung by the pupils of Nursery B.

The highlight of the assembly was the dance performance with rainbow coloured pomp pomps by the pupils of Sr. Kg A.

Last but not the least all the teachers of pre primary section came up on the stage with their rainbow coloured attires and sang a song.

The assembly was co -ordinated by Tr.Monica, Tr.Loretta and Tr.Leena.

SENIOR SECONDARY SECTION

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY

Students of the Senior Secondary Section of VidyaVikas Academy celebrated National Sports Day on Saturday, September 01, 2017. A Special Assembly was conducted by the students of Class XII B.

To commemorate the celebration, a speech on the importance of National Sports Day was delivered by Sharvani Patil, followed by the thought for the day by Yash Naik and Niharika concluded the assembly.

The program was coordinated by Tr. Shaheena Basha.

TEACHER’S DAY By: Isha S. Dhuri, Class XI B

“Teachers are the torch bearers of the next generation”

Teachers play a major role in making their students responsible citizens of tomorrow. To show gratitude towards their teachers the students of Senior Secondary Section of Vidya Vikas Academy celebrated the Teacher’s Day on September 5, 2017 to acknowledge the hard work put in by the teachers towards the all-round development of their students.

The day began with a thoughtful assembly over the public address system. Students decorated the class boards with their quirky ideas and ingenious quotes.

The students organized a short programme for their class teachers in their respective classes which involved dances, songs, speeches, poems and games. Everybody participated whole-heartedly and had a wonderful time. Flowers and cards were offered to the teachers by the students expressing their love, respect and gratitude towards them. Tables were turned as for the first time, students played the role of the teachers and delivered lectures to their fellow classmates.

A short cultural programme was organized in the school hall for all the teachers of the school. It began with a prayer service to thank the almighty for the gift of teachers. A song was sung by the school band and by the Class 12 students. The students of 10th as well as the 11th standard had put up dances for their teachers which revitalized their mood. A game of “bombing the city” thrilled all the teachers. Spot prizes delighted everyone and the teachers had a great time.

Teachers! Thank you all, so much for all the wisdom and enlightenment. It is after all, because of you that we are who we are and who we will be. We love you all very much! HAPPY TEACHER’S DAY!

CAREER GUIDANCE IN PSYCHOLOGY A Career Guidance session was organized for the Psychology students of Class 12 on 8th September 2017.

The session was conducted by Mrs. Wilma Alphonso, the Health and Wellness teacher of the school. Mrs. Wilma started the session by explaining the meaning of Psychology and how it is correlated to our day today life. The objective of the session was to let the students know about the various career options available in the field of Psychology and qualifications required for the same.

Through the session the students were made aware of the future scope, the opportunities worldwide and the importance of various careers in the field of psychology. The session was indeed very interesting and informative.

EXCURSION TO CSIR – NIO – GOA By Rachael Rodrigues (Class 11 B)

On 8th September, 2017 the students of Class 11 visited the ‘CSIR Capsule Exhibition’, organized by CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography, at NIO campus, Dona Paula, Goa. The exhibition highlighted the various achievements of CSIR in the areas of social intervention, nurturing human health, agriculture and floriculture and more. The exhibition consisted of various displays exhibiting how the CSIR has used science and research for the betterment of people and society at large. It also displayed the achievements of various Indian Institutes in the field of science and technology.

The first section of the exhibition focused on ‘energy’. It emphasized on various ways to produce clean and green, renewable and sustainable energy. It disclosed how different materials and techniques can be used to optimize the energy production process. Another section dealt with ‘enabling leather’. It showed how certain institutes in India have developed certain types of shoes for the benefit of children suffering from diseases like diabetes. This goes to show that there is no limit to innovation.

Yet another section concentrated around ‘chemicals’. It showed how various institutes are working towards creating new drugs and medicines to help cure various diseases. They are developing cost effective treatments for various diseases. The next part dealt with ‘pharmaceuticals’. This section displayed how certain medicinal plants which are easily available can be used to manufacture medicines for many diseases.

There were also many segments depicting the various developments of India in the field of technology. One such invention was ‘MAYA – India’s first ingeniously developed underwater vehicle’. Most of the exhibits emphasized on how we can use science to protect our environment. Some of the exhibits also showcased the CSIR’s contribution towards the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ started by the Indian government.

The CSIR Capsule Exhibition definitely inspired all the students to fruitfully use their talent but use to improve the quality of human life. It emphasized the CSIR’s tradition of continuous hard work and dedication towards helping India to become one of the world’s leading countries in the sphere of science and technology. This great responsibility lies in the hands of the students as they are the future of our country.

SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL 2017 The Department of English, Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao hosted its 8th edition of Shakespeare festival – ‘The Bard by the Mandovi’ on 9th September 2017.

The competition gives the students from all around the state a chance to celebrate the works of William Shakespeare in various artistic forms. Students of the Senior Secondary of Vidya Vikas Academy participated in the competition. Students of around 13 schools and higher secondary schools with great zeal and enthusiasm participated for the event.

The festival started off with an opening ceremony by lighting the traditional lamp to invoke divine providence. Students from VidyaVikas Academy Senior Secondary section triumphantly won some of the events by giving tough competition to the other participants. The name of the events and prizes are as follows:

Louise Veniziana Barretto from Class XI B, staged a marvellous performance in ‘The Bard’ while Myedica Barretto from Class XIIA displayed her fine art skills in the ‘Mozaic’. Tamara Barretto and Pershirl Fernandes from Class XIA revealed their creativity in ‘Bedtime Shakespeare and Nevin Thomas displayed his talents in ‘Meme Scheme’. Bradley Rodrigues from Class XIIA captivated the attention of the audience through his soliloquy.

U-19 BOYS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT 2017-2018 Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs organized Taluka Level Football Tournament for U-19 Boys on 14th September 2017 at Cuncolim DSYA ground.

VVA STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MEDIASCOPE 4.0 Students of Class 11th and 12th represented Vidya Vikas Academy for the event Mediascope 4.0v, hosted by the Department of Mass Communication and Department of Journalism of St. Xaviers College, Mapusa on 15th Sept 2017.

The students enthusiastically took part in various on stage and off stage events namely Quiz, Rangoli Fusion, Amazing Race, News X, Dance, Mad AD, News Spoof, and Photography giving tough competition to the other competitors. It was a learning experience for the students.

SEMINAR ON ‘ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN BIOTECHNOLOGY’ The career guidance cell of Vidya Vikas Academy – Senior Secondary Section organised a seminar in the month of September for the XII graders on ‘Entrepreneurship in Biotechnology ‘conducted by Ms. Madhavi Motankar, Asst. Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Smt. Parvatibai Chowgule College. The main aim of the seminar was to debunk the common notion that “Biotechnology has no scope in India”.

Ms. Motankar, over the course of her talk, explained the various fields of interest one can choose from Biotechnology. She gave an in depth description of what the field actually consists off and spoke about its contributions to human welfare. She made the students realize about the need to keep their career options open. She also enlightened the students about the ideas and innovative methods which can be used to start a business in Biotechnology. She encouraged the students through one of the project done by the Biotechnology students of Smt. Parvatibai Chowgule College, wherein the students had prepared Probiotic Soya that aims to help lactose intolerant, diabetic, vegans and people with digestive problems. Their products are been marketed in Mumbai.

She introduced the students to Biocon and industries in Biotechnology. Biocon is an Indian bio-pharmaceutical enterprise. It exports pharmaceutical products to the American and European markets. Biocon’s businesses and services include small molecules, biosimilars, branded formulations, novel molecules and research services.

Towards the end, Ms. Motankar listed and explained about the products obtained through biotechnology like for example Bioplastics, Pee poo bags, etc. Overall the seminar was informative and enlightening.

WORLD OZONE DAY A special assembly was conducted on the 18th of September 2017 to commemorate World Ozone Day, which is observed on 16th September, the world over. Students of Class 11 and 12 participated in the assembly. The theme for this year is “Caring for all life under the sun”.

A brief idea about the existence of this day was given to the students. A video was screened which explained the formation of ozone molecules. A second video highlighted the factors due to which the ozone layer is depleting.

The assembly ended with students taking an oath to protect the ozone layer by taking the necessary precautions. The assembly was coordinated by Sir Bhushan Sail.

INSPIRUS 2K17 The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda hosted its 1st edition of Inspirus 2K17 on 14th & 15th September 2017. It was a state level competition and most of the schools, colleges and higher secondary’s throughout the state of Goa participated in the most exciting technical fest with great zeal and enthusiasm.

Senior Secondary students represented Vidya Vikas Academy for the competition. The event was divided into technical and non-technical competitions.

Saavendra Furtado showed his talent in Virtual DJ event, Cyndroy and Shounak Korgaonkar displayed photography skills, Yash, Jonathan, Nathan and Kurt tried their hand at Rubiks Cube event and Yash successfully qualified for quarter-finals, and lastly Nevin Thomas and Varun Prakash participated in Virtual PC building event.

For the Gaming Event, the students displayed splendid performance and was able to secure the 1st place as the

winner of FIFA.
