We originally made a GPS transmitter chip for this but after seeing the cost we decided to do without it. One of our R&D test goons didnt get the memo and went out with a team to set off some avalanches. He was swept away in a sea of snow. The team started their search and realized there was no signal coming from the watch. Lets just say were still looking for him.

The high-density glare that most watch face pieces create could give away an entire platoons position. watch t erm g l ossaryAlarm: Feature that sounds a tone at a pre-set time or at regular intervals.

Applied: Commonly refers to objects that are attached to a watch dial with meth-ods other than an adhesive. Such as rivets or posts.

Analog Display: A watch that shows the time using hour and minute hands on the dial.

Analog/Digital: Analog/Digital watches have a digital watch function in addition to traditional watch movements. It features an alarm, a stopwatch, and a calendar. Some styles have a lighted display.

Anti-Reflective Coating: Some mineral or sapphire crystals will have an AR (an-ti-reflective) coating which reduces glare and reflection, making the watch face easier to read.

Automatic Movement: Automatic Movements (or Self-Winding Movements) work by automatically winding themselves off the watch wearers wrist motions. Inside the movement is a pendulum type counter weight. This weight swings side to side and tightens this movements main spring witch intern powers the watch.

ATM/Atmospheres: ATM stands for atmospheres of pressure. When a watch is certified for water resistance, the depth to which it is water resistant is indicated in feet, meters, and ATM. 1 ATM is the equivalent pressure of 33 feet or 10.33 meters of depth in saltwater.

Bezel: A bezel is the outer most top ring that surrounds a watches dial. This refers to anything from a protective ring to an indexed unit of measurement.

Buckle: A flat typically rectangle metal frame used to connect the ends of two straps

Butterfly Deployant Clasp: Symmetrically released and collapsed, forged steel mechanism used to fasten two metal pieces together.

Case: Not only does the case dictate the watches look or style, it is what holds and protects a watches movement and/or inner mechanisms. This is usually the main body of a watch or timepiece.

Case Back: Found on the underside of a watch case and is use to help hold in place and protect a watches movement.

Chamfer: A right angled sloping edge or corner sometimes used to shape the borders of subdials.

Chronograph: When a watch or timepiece has an integrated stop watch, it is most commonly referred to as a Chronograph. The starting and stopping of the Chronograph is controlled by the buttons on top and below the watches crown. These are referred to as pushers.

Clasp: a device with interlocking parts used to fasten two metal pieces together. Most commonly used on a metal watch band or bracelet.

Countdown Timer: Refers to a timing feature of a watch that counts down from a

pre-set or programmable time to zero. Found on most sport watches.

Crown and Stem: On a mechanical watch the crown is used for winding the move-ment and setting the time and date. On an Automatic watch the crown is used for setting the date and time. On some chronographs, the crown might be used to reset the timer to zero.

Crystal: A watch crystal is the clear substance the covers the watches dial. Crystals can be made from several different materials glass, plastic, or synthetic sapphire. A mineral crystal is made from glass but has been heat treated to increase its hardness. This makes the crystal more scratch resistant.

Dial: The watch dial is the face of the watch. It is a plate that is placed behind the hands and on top of the movement. Like the watches case, this component often dictates the style of the watch.

Digital/analog Combination (or ana-digi): A watch that shows time by both Ana-log and digital displays

Digital Display: A watch that shows the time through digits not hands. These watch dials usually consist of an LED (light emitting display) or LCD (liquid cellular display) screen.

Digital Movement: On a digital watch, liquid crystals receive pulses to display time.

Enamel Fill: an opaque or semi transparent glassy substance that can be applied to metallic or other hard surfaces for ornamental purposes.

Epoxy Fill: an opaque or semi transparent glassy substance that can be heated then poured into a metallic or other hard surface for ornamental purposes.

Expansion Band: A metal watch band that expands and contracts with spring like tension.

Gasket: A rubber or plastic ring used in the case, crown, push button and/or crystal, which seals the watch against penetration of dust, moisture, and water.

Grosgrain: Ribbed and resilient fabric developed in mid 19th century France.

Index (or Indices): Marks on a watch dial that mostly indicates seconds, minutes and hours.

Ionic Plating: Used to color stainless steel through means of static electricity.

Keeper: Leather or Polyurethane object used to hold down excess watch strap.

Kinetic Movement: Like an Automatic Movement, A Kinetic Movement is self winding. These movements differ because a Kinetic movement actually stores electricity instead of tightening a mainspring.

LCD: Liquid Cellular Display commonly used as digital watch display.

LED: Light Emitting Display commonly used as digital watch display.

Link: The connecting points in a watches metal band.

Lug: Extension of watch case meant to hold or mount a watches bracelet or band.

Luminous: In reference to a watchs dial, indexes, or hands. These parts appear to glow in the dark.

Mirror Seal: Highly reflective plating used on watch dials to sometimes make numbers or indices.

Movement: The movement is the internal mechanism of a watch. The movement itself is the mechanism by which time is measured. Typically there are 3 types of movements

Pin: Pressed through a watches metal bands links in order to hold the bracelet in place and offer a hinging point.

Plating: The process of applying a thin layer usually of metallic substance.

Polyurethane or PU: Used in some watchbands, polyurethane does not absorb water and is therefore unaffected by moisture. Good for swimming, and sports activities.

Pushers: Buttons on top and below the watches crown. Used to control the func-tions of most chronograph movements.

Quartz Movement: When a quartz crystal receives an electric charge it releases a rhythmic pulse. This pulse is so consistent that Quartz Movements are consid-ered some of the worlds most accurate time pieces.

Screw-down Crown: Screw-down crowns can be found on most high end diving watches. It provides an extra amount of water resistance and helps prevent ac-cidental changes in your watches time.

Spring Bar: Seated between watch lugs used for mounting watch bands and sometimes bracelets.

Stainless Steel: An extremely durable metal alloy (chromium is a main ingredi-ent) that is virtually immune to rust, discoloration and corrosion.

Subdials: Subdials are smaller dials usually recessed on a watches main dial. These subdials detail other types of measurements in time. Such as 24 hours, milliseconds, days of the month ect.

Tachometer Timer: A scale on a watch usually found on the bezel that will deter-mine speed in km/hour or miles/hour over a measured distance of 1 km or 1 mile. A tachometer offers a mathematical shortcut for measuring rates of speed over a measured course or calculating production units over a period of time.

Water Resistance: Water resistants refers to the depth or pressure that a watch can withstand. The depth is usually indicated on the dial or caseback. Depth is sometimes measured in Meters or ATM (Atmospheres). 1 ATM equals 10.33 meters.

getting it wet. Water will ruin the leather. In the

event that the leather band is ruined, VESTAL has a

limited supply of replacements that can be sold at a

nominal price. Call the VESTAL warranty department

for details (949) 631-7036). If your VESTAL watch is

equipped with a stainless steel or polyurethane (PU)

band and it has been exposed to salt water, rinse

band in fresh water soon after exposure.
