    1. PURPOSEThisVerticalTransportservicesstandardsetsoutMacquarieUniversitysminimumrequirementsforthedesign, construction andmaintenance of Vertical Transport systems. Vertical Transport systems alsoreferstolifts,elevators,movingpathways,escalators,serviceliftsetc.Theobjectiveofthisstandardisto provide guidance and minimum standards of compliance to ensure that systems are designed,constructed, commissioned, andmaintained to achieve energy efficiency, fitness for purpose, qualityanddurability, designperformance in operation,maintainability and safety for access andoperation,lowenvironmentalimpact,andlowlifecyclecost.

    Applicable requirements documented inWork Health and Safety legislation, Disability Discriminationlegislation, State Environmental Planning legislation, Commonwealth and State legislation, NaturalConstructionCodes (NCC),MacquarieUniversityDesignGuidesandAustralianStandards (AS)are theminimumandmandatorycompliancerequirements.BritishStandardsshallbeusedwherenoAustralianStandardexists.

    ReferenceisalsomadetoCIBSEGuideDTransportationSystemsinBuildings.

    Whereanyambiguityexistsbetweenthis standardand theaforementionedmandatory requirementsthen:

    TheStandardappliestoplanners,projectmanagers,consultants,contractors,subcontractors,tenants,managing agents and University staff involved in the design, construction, commissioning andmaintenanceofexisting,newandproposedUniversitybuildingsandfacilities.

    5. TECHNICALREQUIREMENTS

    5.1. INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this manual is to assist consultants, Project managers, D & C Contractors and Builders.Generally,therelevantAustralianstandardsaretobecompliedwithunlesstheUniversityrequiresthatahigherstandardbemet.VariationsfromthestandardaretobeapprovedbyMUP.FortheavoidanceofdoubttheVTSofaUniversitybuildingmayincludestructural/buildingelements,oranyothertradeworksotherthantheelevatortradewhicharecontingentonthefunctioningoftheVTS. (Eg.BuildingTradeaccesscontrolcontractor,etc

    It should alsobe noted that theUniversity is a long termowner of the property and so appropriateconsiderations are to be made in terms of quality of installation, efficiency in operation, ease ofmaintenanceandsafety,longtermreliability,andflexibilityforchangeofuse(wherefeasible).

    TheTechnicalServicesManagershallbeconsultedifanyconfusionarisesbeforeapplyingthisStandardGuide.Approvedvariationsmustalwaysbeinwritingortheywillnotbeaccepted.

    Theabovelistisnotanexhaustivelistofrelevantstandards.Thedesignandinstallationshallconsiderall relevant standards required under legislation or authority requirements, and also considerinternational codes and standards if required to satisfy the technical, operational and functionalrequirementsofthebrief.

    IttheVTSisinstalledinajurisdictionnotnotedabovewiththerulesandregulationsofallauthoritieshavingjurisdictionovertheminthatlocationshallapply.

    5.3. DESIGNANDDOCUMENTATIONDESIGNAPPROACHTheUniversityexpectsconsultantsanddesignerstoprovidedesignsthatmeettheprojectbrief. Thefollowingareprioritiesthatconsultantsanddesignersmustbeawareofandconsiderintheirdesign:

    a. A consultants return brief shall be provided for approval that confirms all aspects of theproject brief, design allowances, building fabric, usage and operating conditions,environmentalcriteria,designapproachandoptionstobeconsideredaspartoftheconceptdesignprocess;

    b. Provideenvironmentalconditionsthatmeettheprojectbrief;c. Take a long term balanced view of capital costs, energy costs, maintenance costs and

    longevityofequipment;d. Accessibility,easeofoperation,andeaseofmaintenance;e. Control systemsshallbedesignedwith simplicityand reliability inmind.Oftencontrolsare

    madeoverly complicatedwhichcan lead to issues incommissioning,multiplepointsof failureandanoverlyonerousmaintenanceburden;

    DESIGNINPUTSANDPROCESSTheUniversity expects consultants and designers toproactively inform, advise and contribute to thedesignprocess.

    ENGINEERINGFUNCTIONSREQUIREDFROMDESIGNCONSULTANTSThe university expects consultants and designers to be fully qualified, experienced and capable ofcarrying out all engineering design, calculations, equipment selection, construction quality checks,overviewandverificationofcommissioning.

    CALCULATIONSUse of computer modelling/simulation/estimation programs must be performed and show that theminimumdesigncriteriarequiredbytheMUPhavebeenmet.Thismustbepartofthedesignadviceforallservicestoverifythebuildingperformance.

    DESIGNCONDITIONSFor2and3storeybuildingsthereisaminimumrequirementtoprovidealiftfortheverticalmovementoffurniture,goodsandpersonswithdisabilities.

    Where the height of a building exceeds 10.5 metres or there are more than 3 floors served,considerationshouldbegiventomorethanoneliftbeinginstalled.
