Vale Ed Tamplin

Ed, after a valiant health battle, sadly passed over on Monday 7th October 2019. Ed was one of Australia’s leading

astrologers unrivalled in his practice of Mundane Astrology and predictive techniques. Ed introduced astrology into countless

people’s lives with accuracy and care when he was co-hosting a top rating evening radio show over many years.

Ed lectured at FAA Conferences, taught astrology, in a joint venture with his life-partner Sherrynne Dalby, at the Sirius

School of Astrology and encouraged and supported budding astrologers to be the best they could be.

Ed wrote the ‘Eye in the Sky’ quarterly column for the FAA Journal and I know that FAA members looked forward to reading

his insights into world events, people in the public eye and politics. His astrological work stands as testament to his

knowledge, wisdom and his skills that he shared so generously with others. Ed lectured across Australia to many FAA

Associations and other groups, consistently wrote his astute website predictions and articles and posted regularly on his

Facebook page.

Ed was a member of the Astrology Association of NSW, a past Committee Member and Vice President. Ed was also a

member of the Association of Professional Astrologers, the professional arm of the FAA and a member of the Sydney

Astrological Research Society with Committee positions and as SARS Vice President.

Regardless of all his accomplishments Ed was an unassuming person with a wonderful, and frequently cheeky, sense of

humour. He quickly put others at ease with his warmth, genuine interest in them, his brilliant conversational skills and he

was always up for a chat. Ed enjoyed strumming his guitar while he shared a song and being with family and his friends

who will all sadly miss him.

Deepest condolences to Sherrynne Dalby, Ed’s partner who cared for him tirelessly throughout his battle with cancer and to

all their family. Ed you will be greatly missed by family, friends and the astrological community. May you rest gently among

the stars and keep shining your warmth and brilliance down on the world.

Conference Musings

I went to my first FAA conference in Hobart in 1996. It blew my mind! To be surrounded by so many astrologers, all

speaking the same language – astrology – and to be exposed to so many brilliant lectures and discussions was

exhilarating. Of course, I tried to do too much, went to every lecture without a break, and in the end I got to the point

where my mind refused to take anything else in. I learned from that, and these days I give myself plenty of time out and

focus on the talks I really want to experience.

The 2020 conference comes on the Pluto-Saturn conjunction in Capricorn. What a time it is for the world! And what a

range of talks and workshops there is at the conference. For me, this is the most exciting range of lectures in years; my

biggest dilemma is keeping the number down to a manageable number! What a line-up of international speakers – Lynn

Bell, Wade Caves (a brilliant lecturer – don’t miss him!), Dorian Greenbaum, Frank Clifford, Darby Costello, Jason Holley –

people we otherwise have no opportunity to listen to here in Australia. In addition, there are amazing lectures from great

Australian and NZ astrologers. Have a look at the information on speakers and lecturers on the conference website, on the

Just reading the speaker biographies and the lecture outlines is an adventure in itself.

This may be the last FAA conference of its type. Future conferences may be smaller, more boutique affairs, and may not

even be run by the National FAA. So this may be your last chance to attend this iconic event. If you attend only one FAA

International Conference in your life, make it this one!

WHAT IS A SOLAR ECLIPSE?

A Solar Eclipse occurs when “the Moon stands between the Sun and Earth cutting off from our vision not only

the light of the Sun, but the Sun itself”. Nicholas de Vore.

A Solar Eclipse occurs at the New Moon. This is the reason why Solar Eclipses are connected to new beginnings. Why don’t

we have a Solar Eclipse at every New Moon? A Solar Eclipse only occurs when the Sun and the Moon are forming a

conjunction near the Nodes. It is worth noting also if the eclipse involved the north or south node. A Solar Eclipse can

involve planets. Eclipses are known as Total, Partial or Annular. The strongest effect is the Total Eclipse. An Annular

Eclipse means a narrow rim of light will surround the Moon. This type of Eclipse is the next strongest after the Total. A

partial is exactly that, the Sun is only partially eclipsed.

The position of the Solar Eclipse coincides with the Sun on the particular day of the Eclipse. Eclipses have an approximately

110 kilometre wide path known as the 'Path of Totality'. The magnitude of the Eclipse depends on the distance of the Sun

and Moon from Earth and the distance from the Nodes. The higher the magnitude the more effect the Eclipse seems to

have. We can find the magnitude of the eclipse in our Ephemeris or in Solar Fire under Eclipses. The duration of the

Eclipse depends on the motion of the bodies.

An ancient rule was that the affect of the Eclipse lasted as long in years as the Eclipse lasts in hours (Solar only). The

countries they thought were affected by the Eclipse were deduced by noting the sign on the Ascendant of the Eclipse Chart

then looking at the countries that were ruled by that sign. For example, if Taurus is on the Ascendant of this Eclipse then

according to Rex T. Bills countries ruled by Taurus are:- Asia Minor, Atlantic Ocean Basin, Australia, Austria, Cypress,

Holland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Labrador, New Guinea, Persia, Poland, Greece, White Russia, South America and Wales. Also

check the degrees of a country's chart and the President of that country as the Sun in a countries chart represents the King

or President.

Modern thought suggests that the countries that lie in the path of the Eclipse Shadow, Path of Totality, are worth

watching. Keep an eye on headline news especially 2 weeks before and after the Eclipse. In Astrology it is more powerful

if it falls upon a planet, luminary, ascendant or descendant. Ancient superstition suggested Eclipses were evil. They

believed it was a bad omen. Eclipses of the Sun and Moon that fall on the Ascendant or Midheaven were thought to have

unfavourable influences.

When interpreting Eclipses, check for good or bad aspects. Only use an orb of 1 degree however some suggest 2 – 3

degrees. How does the eclipse affect your own chart? What is the effect on progressed planets, any aspects and the

condition of the planets involved in the eclipse? The Solar Eclipse represents male energy. Conjunctions and oppositions

hold major importance. At the conjunction the event will occur directly and the opposition will trigger something from

outside. Here all that can be done is to respond.

The effects of an Eclipse can be felt for sometime thereafter. An Eclipse marks the beginning (Solar) or end (Lunar) of a

cycle that may take 6 to 9 months to show up. Watch this degree as it becomes a sensitive point in the chart for sometimes

several years. The Moon, Mercury and Mars transits to the Eclipse points act as a trigger. Suggestions have been made

that until Saturn passes over the Eclipse point it remains a sensitive point.

We are warned not to look at Solar Eclipses. In a chart we can ask ourselves “what is it that I don’t want to look at”? It

can indicate a loss of brilliance, power or reputation. There is a new focus. A new focus, event or person will override or

trigger what we don’t want to look at. The House in which the Eclipse falls is also important. Look also where the transiting

Nodes are because they can be up to 15 degrees away from the Eclipse point. The Houses where the Nodes reside now

come into prominence. It becomes the area of life that needs attention or expansion. Interpretation of symbols is

important also.

For further interpretation look to the Dispositor of the Eclipse and the Lord of the Eclipse chart. Popular belief leans towards

the Almuten, the planet with the most dignity, as the Ruler of the Chart.

If the last few eclipses that have touched your personal planets, they are in some ways are like little triggers giving you a

gentle push forward to take your place on the world stage.

SAROS CYCLE OF ECLIPSES - 19 ½ year cycles and a complete Solar Eclipse cycle consists of 68 to 75 returns over a period

of 1260 years.

Expanding on Christina’s Pre-Natal Eclipse workshop presented at the South Australian Mini Conference in January 2019…

No matter how well we live our lives we all have personal lessons to learn or teach during our time here on the

blue planet.

No matter how much money you have, how much love you receive, how much success you achieve or how

healthily you live, our life lessons continually confront us…. asking us to check in and consider or re-consider if we

are living our best authentic lives.

So you’ve landed the perfect job, met your soul mate or have been given the clear diagnosis but before you know

it, little cracks soon start to appear in your seemingly perfect life.

What if you had a way to identify these lessons and teachings allowing more self-awareness? Would it help you to

know these lessons?

What if you had a way to identify these repetitive patterns in your own life and the lives of those around you? How

much easier would it be to, rather than side-step the cracks in our personal pavement, take the necessary steps

preventing ourselves from falling… often head first, into that same old familiar hole?

By looking at our pre-natal eclipse points we gain insight into these seemingly pre-ordained life

lessons. As a child you may remember playing a game that required you to 'jump over the cracks in order not to

break your Mother’s back'. How often do you find yourself trying to avoid situations by jumping over or ignoring

these repetitive circumstances? Is it easier to avoid the lessons rather than break our backs and avoid pain or

discomfort? By raising our conscious awareness of the cracks we no longer need to jump, side-step or fall down the

old familiar hole you may constantly find yourself climbing out of. By recognising the pitfalls can we walk down a

new road on our journey? We are also able to identify the people in our lives who are in your life to support you,

journey with you and walk down the lesson learning path.

During this expanded workshop you are invited to work out your pre-natal eclipses, identifying each lesson, one by

one; not only for your own benefit but also for the benefit of loved ones and clients.
