Eagle River GolfCourse is famous for itscourse conditions, chal-lenging layout and NorthWoods beauty. It is opento the public for everyoneto play.

When golfers play atEagle River Golf Course, they often are playing onthe best course condi-tions available in the

North Woods. Many of our cus-tomers rave every yearabout the overall playingconditions they experi-ence at our facility. Wetake pride in giving thegolfers a playing surfacethat is consistent withour four-star rating wereceive every year fromGolf Digests Best Places

to Play, said BradMissling, the clubs PGAgolf pro.

Golf Digest has givenEagle River Golf Coursea four-star rating 10years in a row. The cus-tomers playing thecourse are the people re-sponsible for the ratingthe course receives.

This rating reflectsthe value and awesomeexperience of playing atthe Eagle River GolfCourse, said Missling.

Eagle River GolfCourse offers the most af-fordable rates of any four-star rated golf course inthe North Woods. Peoplecan be assured they are

getting a great valuewhen they choose to playgolf at Eagle River GolfCourse.

The practice area alsorepresents what cus-tomers should expectfrom a course with a four-star rating. A newputting and chippinggreen was built a coupleof years ago. This was a

huge improvement forpeople to practice allparts of their short game.

A practice greensidebunker was put in so thatpeople can practice theirgreenside sand game aswell. The driving rangehas three levels of teeingsurface with targetgreens and yardagesigns.

Last year, a gold set oftees was added to the golfcourse. The course nowoffers four sets of tees tomake the course enjoy-able for all skill levels. The new gold tees havebecome very popularwith senior golfers.

The undulating greensand narrow fairwayskeep the course challeng-ing.

The course has manyof its holes carved out ofthe mature trees whichremind golfers why theylove to come and golf inthe North Woods area.

The abundance ofwildlife is another uniquecharacteristic the course

has that golfers enjoy. Many white-tailed deermake the course theirhome, red fox have beenseen and every spring themallards enjoy the wateron the course.

Trees, water hazardsand rolling hills havemade the course into oneof the most popularcourses in northern Wis-

consin, Missling said. The amenities do notstop with the course. Theclubhouse offers a friend-ly atmosphere to enjoy adrink, food or snack aftera round of golf. Golf out-ings are welcome. Therestaurant can seat morethan 100 people, plus theoutdoor patio is a verypopular spot to relax

after golf. The restaurantoverlooks the sceniccourse.

The pro shop offers toppro-line equipment fromthe best vendors in theequipment industry.Mens club lines for saleare from Callaway, Ti-tleist, Cobra, Ping, TaylorMade, Adams and Cleve-land. Club fitting is avail-able to ensure the equip-ment purchased fits thegolfers swing.

The pro shop offersmens clothing lines fromCutter & Buck, Adidas,Sun Mountain, Under

Armour, Gear and Nike.Ladies lines carried inthe pro shop include An-

tigua, Adidas, Annika,Nike, Sun Mountain,Gear and Cutter & Buck.

We carry a wider se-lection of ladies clothesthan any other course inthe area. If we dont havean item you want, inmost cases, we can spe-cial order it for you andhave it shipped to yourfront door, said Missling.

Mens and ladies golfshoe lines are from Adi-das and Foot Joy. Thecourse usually ordersaround 100 pairs of shoesto start the year, so thecourse offers a good sizeselection at a wide pricerange, which makes theirshoe selection the best inthe North Woods.

The bottom line whenit comes to equipmentand apparel, is that ifcustomers are looking forthat new driver for moredistance, a new putterthat is well balanced,

new irons for maximumforgiveness or the newestwedges with zip groovetechnology, the pro shopstaff at Eagle River GolfCourse can help find theexact clubs a golfer islooking for.

The Clydesdales ap-pearance in northernWisconsin is one of hun-dreds made annually bythe traveling hitches.Canadians of Scottish de-scent brought the firstClydesdales to America

in the mid-1800s. Today, the giant draft horses areused primarily for breed-ing and show.

Horses chosen for theBudweiser Clydesdalehitch must be at least 3years of age, stand ap-proximately 6 feet at theshoulder, weigh an aver-age of 2,000 pounds, bebay in color, have fourwhite legs with a blaze ofwhite on the face, andblack mane and tail.

Eagle Falls AdventureGolf is owned and operat-ed by Mark and Karen

Cropsey and their chil-dren, Zach and Emily, ofSt. Germain. They havebeen in the area 14 years, managing vacation prop-erties and rentals.

The theme of thecourse is a 1950s fishingcamp. Golfers putt theirway around a fishingcabin, a bait shop and afishing dock.

We wanted to create amini golf course that waschallenging and interac-tive, said Mark Cropsey.

Golfers can make sev-eral choices throughoutthe course. For example, they can cross the riverby bridge or steppingstones, descend theranger tower by stairs orslide.

The Cropseys are al-ways working hard tochange and improve thecourse. The landscapingis constantly maintainedand updated to keep thecourse fresh and excitingfor the golfers.

    People discover some-

thing new each time theycome to the course. Ifyou look close, hole No. 5is in the shape of a giantmuskie where you tee offat the tail and putt pastthe fin rock formations. The muskies eye is thecup.

    We wanted to build a

course that was differentfrom the normal mini golfcourse, said KarenCropsey. Somethingsymbolic was needed tohighlight the area.There-fore, the main rock for-mation and waterfall fea-tures an eagles head.

In addition to the cas-cading waterfalls, thecourse also includeslakes, rivers and foun-tains.

We wanted the waterfeatures to really standout, explained MarkCropsey. The course has20,000 gallons of water.

This year players willsee water trickling down

the new water tower fea-ture by holes #1 and #2into a near by pond.

Also newly added is ayellow canoe full of beau-tifully planted flowersalong the side of thecourse.

After finishing around, golfers have thechance to win a free gameon the 18th hole, humor-ously called NatureCalls. The hole featuresa talking outhouse that

has become a course funfeature. The outhousecomments on golfersshots and then flushes ifa free game is won.

Any free passes givenby Eagle Falls will neverexpire, so customers canuse them at their ownconvenience.

There also is a $4-off-a-foursome discount,

with complimentarycoupons found at localbusinesses and on theback of all Vacation Weekissues. The coupons arenot available at thecourse.

The course is open sea-sonally every day from 10a.m. to 10 p.m. weatherpermitting.

With numerous go-cart tracks, bumperboats, water balloon cat-apults, mini golf andmany other activities, the family will never getbored.

The traditional roadgo-cart track is the mostpopular attraction.

When this place was just started, about 30years ago, the go-carts

were the only ride and itwas just a circle track, said owner Dean Nolan.

That original trackhas grown to 850 feetand now featuresbridges, hairpin turnsand long straightawaysfor all your racing enjoy-ment.

For the children whocant quite reach the

pedals Kartway offersdouble carts so that aparent can drive.

For those who lovespeed, Kartway has thefaster NasKarts. Thesecars are styled aftersprint car racing ma-chines and allow driversto open the throttle andspeed through bankedcorners.

As if the first twocourses were notenough, Kartway has aslip track covered in waxand baby powder to testyour driving skills. Slidearound the corners onthis eight car track andleave your friends in the

    dust.

Even the youngestdrivers can drive atKartway. The kiddietrack allows small chil-dren to race around thepavement.

To cool off on thoseblistering summer days,Kartway has an assort-ment of water activities.

    Motorized bumperboats allow riders to

splash around and bumpeach other until every-one is soaked. Driversalso can team up andpush less-fortunate rid-ers into the fountain lo-cated in the middle ofthe pool. Everyone issure to be drenched after

    this one.

For a glorified water-balloon fight, check outWater Wars! In thisgame, two people aregiven a bucket of waterballoons. Each personthen goes to their re-spective area and loadstheir water balloons intoa slingshot, to send themflying across the divideto soak their opponent.

If you want to chal-lenge yourself on theputting green, Kartwayhas a 18-hole mini golfcourse. Challenging forall ages, players willhave to avoid water haz-ards and obstacles inorder to defeat their op-

    ponent.Kartway also serves

candy, chips, soda andwater available in con-cessions. Picnic areasalso are available forguest use.

Kartways well-trained staff operate andsupervise the rides inorder to avoid any acci-dents. Nolan said thestaff members age 16and older control theadult rides and thoseyounger than 16 are re-sponsible for the kiddie

    rides.Tickets for the go-

carts, slick t rack,NasKart, bumper boatsand golf are $4 each. Forchildren age 5 andyounger, golf is free. Asix-pack of tickets can bepurchased for $24, withthe seventh free.

Tickets for the kiddiekarts and boats, as well

as Water Wars!, areavailable for $2 each. Asix-pack of tickets forthese games can be pur-chased for $12, with theseventh free.

Located in Land OLakes is the quaint

NorthernWaters Muse-um with this years ex-hibits focusing on the old-time taverns, resorts andfishing guides found inthe northern Wisconsinarea.

The exhibits were de-signed and organized byLynn Richie and LisaStemen. The exhibit coor-dinator was BarbaraWilkinson.

After the loggingboom, the Land O Lakes

area became a fishingdestination with its many

lakes and streams. Alongwith the fishermen camethe need for guides whoknew the hot spots forangling.

In the fall, many oftheses same guideswould lead groups ofhunters out for bird orgame hunting. Many ofthese anglers andhunters equipment is ondisplay at the museum.

Also on display is theneighborhood tavern ex-

hibit. Taverns are asmuch part of Wisconsins

identity as sunshine is toFlorida or cold is to Alas-ka, and Land O Lakeshas been no exception, with memorable estab-lishments such as Bare-foot Charlies, ArchdaleMerrill Inn, The Hi-HatClub and Gateway Inn.Sadly, these taverns aregone, but the stories andmemories of good timesstill live on in the photosand stories told by long-time residents at some ofthe local taverns today.

In the exhibit, design-ers recreated the feel of alazy afternoon spentplaying cards and tellinglies about the one thatgot away.

Complimenting boththe guides and tavern ex-hibits is the resort exhib-

it. This collection of pho-tographs and documentstells about the history-rich resort history of theLand O Lakes area.

With hundreds of re-sorts in the area, includ-ing Camp Tenderfootfrom the 1910s and DeerPath Camp from the1930s, Land O Lakes hasbeen a resort town for

more than 100 years. This is evident in the vastarchives of images on dis-play at the museum.

The museum also in-cludes a childrens exhib-it where children can gofishing or play with rusticthemed toys.

Additions to the exhib-it are always welcomedand may be gifted or

loaned to the Land OLakes Historical Society. To loan or donate arti-facts, contact BarbaraRenc at NAPA Auto Partsin downtown Land OLakes or call (715) 547-6153.

More than 38 yearsago, two brothers came tothe North Woods for sum-mer jobs. They came froma strong Italian commu-nity in Chicago wherepizza was the staple athome and at college.

Since there were nopizzerias in the area, thebrothers realized a greatopportunity existed, andopened their own pizze-ria in Eagle River.

Sources say the localsat the time looked downat them jaundice-eyedand called them brashboys from Chitown. Butnow the pizzeria has be-come a landmark.

Today, customers comefrom all over the countryto try the best pizza in

    the area.Even celebrities have

    visited Alexanders on oc-casion, including profes-sional football players;head coaches from theNFL, NBA and NCAA;hockey players; moviestars; movie critics; na-tional sports commenta-tors; leaders of U.S. in-dustries; newscasters;

and authors. A visitingfilm critic even gave

    Alexanders a thumbsup.

Even though the busi-ness opened many yearsago, one thing remainsthe same the tradi-tional method of makingpizza at Alexanders.

The pizza is made theway Grandma Del Cristo

said use the best tomake the best.

The ingredients usedare only the best, whichis stressed by the owners. The cheese used is 100%full-cream mozzarella, which is straight fromthe most award-winningdairy in Wisconsin, alongwith 9-month-aged Ro-mano.

The soul of a pizza isthe crust, which is madewith high-gluten flour.

Adding flavor to the pizzais the thick, rich saucethat is made from tomatopuree from pear toma-toes the meatiest oftomatoes.

The meat also is verylean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers.

For the more adven-turous pizza connois-seurs, Alexanders offersbroccoli, shrimp, albacoreand pineapple to createoriginal gourmet pizzas.

Diners also can try adelicious oven-roastedcheese bread appetizer one-half loaf of freshlybaked French bread, basted with butter, sea-

soned with garlic andaged Romano, coveredwith mozzarella, roastedto a honey-golden brownand, finally, lightly sprin-kled with oregano.

As one would say inItalian, Si mangia sem-pre bene! (one alwayseats well!).

Employees at Alexan-ders Pizza have come

from various cities andcountries around theglobe.

Exchange-student em-ployees from Hungary,England, Spain, Scot-land,Lithuania,Jamaica,Poland, Belarus and theCzech Republic havemade the trip across the

    Atlantic to work atAlexanders Pizza.

Alexanders success isdue to the quality putinto each pizza. Thedough is homemade andtriple raised and thecrusts are rolled withcare. The delicious tasteof fresh butter is in everybite of crust as well.

    Although the brothershave experimented with

    high-tech, cost- andlabor-saving methods,the pizza-making methodat Alexanders remainstraditional. At Alexan-ders, the pizza is cookedon a 150-pound stonedeck.

Pizza is not the onlyitem on the menu madewith care and dedication.Savory sandwiches aremade to order with toast-ed French bread, creamymozzarella, Californiatomato sauce and achoice of ham, Italian

sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite

pizza toppings. To entertain diners ofall ages, Alexanders hasa full assortment of ar-cade games, such as pin-ball machines, videogames and several pooland foosball tables. Its agreat place to host birth-

day parties for all ages. Alexanders Pizza,

housed in a turn-of-the-century remodeled build-ing, is located in down-town Eagle River on Rail-road Street.

Parking is availableacross the street. Cus-tomers can dine in orcarry out, and can call

ahead of time to have thepizza ready when they

arrive.Tradition, customerservice and fun can al-ways be found at Alexan-ders Pizza. Alexandersdoes not accept credit ordebit cards. To enjoy thebest pizza in the North, call (715) 479-7363

    Lehner-Stephan Jew-

elers in downtown EagleRiver has 65 years of ex-perience and, in turn, the knowledge to repairand create fine quality

    jewelry, clocks andwatches.

The business wasfounded by Al Lehner in1945. However, in thattime, the store was de-

    voted to making and re-

    pairing watches andclocks.Lehner expressed his

desire for one of hisnephews to some daytake over his business.

The current ownerand nephew of Lehner,Mike Stephan, was at-tending college at UW-Oshkosh. He frequently

visited his uncle andlearned of his uncleswishes.

Two years later in1978, Mike Stephan wasenrolled at Milwaukee

Area Technical Collegefor watchmaking withthe intention of meetinghis uncles wishes.

In 1980, Stephanfound himself the newowner of his unclesstore.

Stephan was soon leftto learn the rest of thebusiness world by him-self, as his uncle diedshortly thereafter.

Now in 2011, Stephancan boast more than 31

years of experience as acertified master watch-maker.

In the beginning,Stephans main focuswas making and repair-ing watches and clocks.

    As times changed, there

became a lower demandfor those particular ser-

    vices.Due to this decline,

Stephan began to focusand work more with jew-elry design and repair.

    Lehner-Stephan Jew-elers sells a large selec-tion of fine watches,rings, engagement rings,bracelets, charms, ear-rings, pendants andother fine jewelry.

    As an artist, Stephan

gravitates toward natu-ral designs, drawing in-spiration frompinecones, acorns, deerand the plethora of

wildlife he experienceson a daily basis.

While most artistshave a unique style, dont believe that this isthe extent of Stephanscraft.

    Simple elegance will

always be in, accordingto Stephan. He has a

vast portfolio thatranges from more natu-ral shapes, to elegant to

    more modern designs.

He uses a diverseamount of material, in-cluding rare elks teeth.Stephen explained thattwo teeth in every elksmouth are made of ivory. These teeth are thengathered and handcarved for earrings, pen-dants, bracelets andnecklaces.

    Stephan then went on

to explain that his earlycareer as a masterwatchmaker has givenhim the fine eye and pa-tience to craft these in-tricate miniature piecesof art.

And if Stephan does-nt have what yourelooking for, he can findit.

We can get anythingthat anybody wants. ex-plains Stephan. I shopfor people. He uses hisnetwork of suppliers andcraftsmen to hunt downwhatever your heart de-sires.

And if you are worriedabout price, there is nocompetition. Stephan

jewelers use the exactsame suppliers as thechain stores, which al-

    lows Stephan to compete

with any price. But withStephan youll receive aquality piece, that hasbeen looked over andcared for by a true arti-san.

Customers knowthat we really care andthat we have the knowl-edge and ability,Stephan added. Theycan trust us, thats why

they come back yearafter year.Family history, years

of experience, knowledgeand the desire to makeeach piece the best it canbe makes Lehner-Stephan a very specialand unique jewelry storeand one of the best in thearea.

Come and see whatwe are really about, said Stephan. You wontbe disappointed.

Lehner-Stephan Jew-elers is located at 110Wall St. in Eagle Riverand is open from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. Mondays-Sat-urdays. The store canalso be reached by phoneat (715) 479-4520 or visitthe website at michaelseaglegold.com.

Jewelry, hand-crafted watches, clockscan be found at Lehner-Stephan Jewelers

Mike Stephan of Lehner-Stephan Jewelers takes great pride in creating that ele-gant piece of jewelry for each of his loyal customers.
