Volume XVII • Issue 5 GraduatIon 2013 e Class of 2013... eir Achievements and Aspirations e members of the Class of 2013 - as well as their families, their teachers, and the com- munity - have much of which to be proud as the graduates move on to pursue new educa- tional and career goals. As confirmation of their efforts, nearly 200 recognition and monetary awards were distributed to graduating seniors by colleges and universities, school and community organizations, employers, and the military. All told, students were offered nearly $4 million, and once decisions of which schools to attend were made, they were able to utilize nearly $1.4 million of that amount to further their educa- tion. While most students plan to continue their schooling, others will immediately enter careers in the military or another area of employment. Beginning on page two, all graduates are listed alphabetically, and those who ranked in the top ten percent are pictured. Also noted is member- ship in honor societies. For those who wished to share them, future plans are included. (An abbreviation key for commonly mentioned schools and degrees is on page three.) Valedictorian Jenna Mancuso, daughter of Tom and Jinny Mancuso, will attend Case Western Reserve University to pursue a degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Jenna has been awarded the Case Western Univer-sity’s Scholar Award, the Monroe Professional Engineers Society Scholarship, the New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the Henry J. Mager Memorial Scholarship, and the Paolo Busti Scholarship. She also received the Batavia Lions Club Athletic Award, the National School Orchestra Award, a U.S. Air Force Scholar Athlete Award, the Batavia Music Booster’s Annual Award, an Advanced Placement Science Award, and the American History Award. In addition, she was a Batavia Rotary Club Memorial Fund Presidential Scholarship finalist, earned special mention in the annual Business First All Western New York Academic Team selections, earned a perfect score on the English Regents, and was named a Batavia Teachers’ Association Academic Excellence Honor Student. Jenna was treasurer of National Honor Society and Scholastic Bowl, captain of the math team, concertmaster in the orchestra, as well as a member of Tri-M Musical Honor Society, Science Olympiad and a contributor to the student literary publication, Stained Glass. She was also a scholar athlete on the varsity soccer, and indoor and outdoor track teams. Salutatorian Niha Idrees is the daughter of Muhammad Idrees and Nashiha Shahid. In the fall, she will attend University of Pittsburgh and major in Biology to later go on to medical school. Niha has been awarded a University of Pittsburgh Academic Scholar-ship, the New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the Batavia High School Orchestra Director’s Award, the Zonta Club of Batavia-Genesee Young Women in Public

Affairs Award, the John M. Secord, Jr. Memo-rial Medal in Mathematics, and the U.S. Air Force Math and Science Award. In addition, she was a GCC Advanced Studies Program Outstanding Scholar’s Award finalist in for-eign language, a Batavia Rotary Club Memo-rial Fund Presidential Scholarship finalist, and a Business First and Independent Health Com-munity All-Star. Very active at Batavia High with many extracurricular activities, Niha was president of the Batavia Chapter of the Na-tional Honor Society and vice president of the Class of 2013. She also was named a Batavia Teachers’ Association Academic Excellence Honor Student. In addition, she competed on the varsity swim team for three years and was very involved in the BHS music department through orchestra, the school musicals, and as a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
