In keeping with UTS’s commitment to environmental sustainability, this prospectus has been produced using environmentally-friendly, vegetable-based ink. It is printed on Titan Plus – an environmentally responsible paper that is FSC Mixed Sources Chain of Custody (CoC) certified.

UTS has committed to a 30 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases (from 2007 levels) by 2020/21.

UTS is a member of the Australian Technology Network (ATN), an influential alliance of five distinctive and prominent Australian universities located in each mainland state. ATN is committed to forging partnerships with industry and government to deliver practical results through focused research.

The network educates graduates who are ready to enter their chosen profession, dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and eager to claim a stake in building sustainable societies of the future; and continues to champion the principles of access and equity that have ensured its members are the universities of first choice for more students.

I’m pleased to introduce you to the UTS Study Abroad and Exchange program; a world-class educational experience providing opportunities to broaden your academic, personal and professional horizons. The UTS Study Abroad and Exchange program offers an excellent education at one of Australia’s quality teaching universities, combined with a rich, exciting learning experience in Australia’s global city – Sydney.

UTS welcomes over 300 study abroad and exchange students each semester and I am always impressed by the cultural and linguistic diversity of students who choose to study abroad at UTS. With around 37,400 students from 120 different countries including Australia, UTS is a reflection of Sydney’s multicultural diversity.

A place in the UTS Study Abroad and Exchange program offers you an internationally respected education. Our strong partnerships with industry and professional bodies produce courses that are innovative, industry relevant and cutting-edge.

Our international standing is reflected in our university rankings, which include being named among the top 25 universities worldwide for international outlook by Times Higher Education and ranking first in Australia and 20th in the world in the QS Top 50 Under 50.

In addition, the university’s campus redevelopment program is delivering a campus of the future including a new library, collaborative learning and social spaces and Australia’s first Frank Gehry-designed building.

As you read through this course guide, you will discover the benefits of studying at UTS and living in Sydney – where you can enjoy a world-class education in the heart of one of the world’s great global cities.

I look forward to seeing you on campus in the near future.

Professor William R Purcell Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (International and Development)

“Our international standing is reflected in our university rankings, including ranking 20th in the world in the QS Top 50 Under 50.”

As a study abroad or exchange student, you can choose from hundreds of subjects, across a range of disciplines. Review your study plan to see what type of subjects you need to take while studying at UTS. If you have electives, you can choose from a range of subjects, however, in order to transfer credit, you might need to study specific subjects.

CHOOSING YOUR SUBJECTS

18

WE PRE-ENROL YOU BEFORE YOU ARRIVEOnce your subjects are approved by both your home institution and by UTS, we will enrol you into your study plan.

STEP 1. DOWNLOADSUBJECT GUIDESDownload our comprehensive online guides for study abroad and exchange studentsfor detailed information about the subjects we offer in:BUSINESSCOMMUNICATIONDESIGN, ARCHITECTURE & BUILDINGENGINEERINGINFORMATION TECHNOLOGYSCIENCEGENERAL ELECTIVES

STEP 2. CHOOSE SUBJECTS USINGSUBJECT CHECKLISTA full-time load for one semester is usually between 18 and 24 credit points. When choosing subjects, check:

the credit point value for each subject

whether the subject is available in the correct semester Autumn semester (February start) and/or Spring semester (July start)

which campus the subject is held at

if there are pre-requisites or assumed knowledge. In some cases, if you have taken an equivalent subject in the past, you can apply for an exemption.

STEP 3. Once you have chosen – or shortlisted – subjects you think fit your study needs, print out the full subject outline from the UTS Handbook. (You can find this by clicking the relevant subject number in our subject choice guides.)

Take the print outs to your academic adviser at your home university for approval before you apply to study at UTS.

Note: Subjects with a practical component (such as nursing and teacher education) are restricted. Applicant’s eligibility to enrol in these subjects will be assessed on an individual basis.

Note: Some subjects include excursions and these may incur extra costs.

UTS-OWNED ACCOMMODATIONUTS has five residences available to UTS students, all close to the City campus.

The UTS Housing community is made up of over 1140 students across Australia and throughout the world. Our Residential Life program provides students with a dedicated support network that assists with the transition of living away from home, enhances learning and organises social activities.

All UTS residences:

> are self-catered, secure and competitively priced

> have spacious communal and barbecue areas

> have games and computer rooms

The Yura Mudang residence also has a music room.

All bedrooms are for one person (except twin share), with shared kitchens, bathrooms and living areas. Apartments are fully-furnished and residential fees includes gas, electricity, water bills and cable internet access.

FEEL AT HOMEUTS Housing provides support for UTS students, including information and assistance with UTS residences and a range of private accommodation options.

You will need to provide your own bed linen and cooking equipment.

Residential fees are different for each residence, and there is a non-refundable application fee of A$35 (subject to change).

Due to the high level of accommodation requests, UTS Housing has sourced reserved beds for UTS students with off-campus providers (Urbanest and Iglu).

UTS HOUSING GUARANTEEAs a study abroad, exchange or visiting research student, you are guaranteed a place to live at UTS Housing if you apply before 30 November for February semester and 15 June for July semester. Your accommodation preference will be considered, but the place you are offered may not correspond with your first choice of residence.

KEVIN SPIEKERMANN“I joined UTS Housing because I knew that I would get to meet other students. I lived in a six share apartment with my own bedroom. The accommodation at UTS seemed expensive at first, but after a bit of research you soon start to see that it is comparable in price. It is a weekly amount that covers all bills such as electricity, water and internet, whereas when you rent private accommodation you need to add these expenses after.”Home country: Germany Studied: Engineering

ACCOMMODATION TIPS> Don’t pay any money before viewing

and being satisfied with a non-UTS property. Until you arrive and get a feel for the area, you want to live in, you won’t know whether it is right for you.

> During Orientation, UTS Housing hosts accommodation sessions where staff can guide and support you with your accommodation search. This service is available in February and July.

RENTING PRIVATEACCOMMODATIONIf you plan to rent private accommodation in Sydney, we recommend you arrange short-term accommodation to begin with, so you can view properties on your arrival and choose something that really suits your needs for the long-term.

Share accommodation means you usually have your own room and share a kitchen, living area and bathroom with other students or people who work. Alternatively, you may choose a studio or one-bedroom apartment to live in on your own, but this is more expensive.

Most private rental accommodation in Sydney is unfurnished.

Visit UTS Housing’s off-campus accommodation website, to find share rooms in private houses and apartments close to UTS campuses: www.uts.studystays.com.au

All accommodation rentals require a residential tenancy agreement. If there are points you are unsure of, please contact the UTS Housing Off-Campus Officer ([email protected]) or the UTS Student Legal Service ([email protected]) for help.

LIVING COSTSThe table below details approximate establishment and ongoing costs you may incur while studying at UTS and living in Sydney. This table should be used only as a guide, as individual spending may vary. It is a requirement of the Australian government that prospective international students can demonstrate that they have access to at least A$18,610 a year to fund their living costs in Australia.

ESTABLISHMENT COSTSYou should expect to pay approximately A$4200 start up or establishment costs for independent accommodation. These costs include items such as a rental accommodation bond (maximum four weeks’ rent), rent in advance, linen, furniture, telephone and internet connection, kitchenware, personal items and electricity connection, and must be budgeted for. With regards to UTS Housing, you will have to budget for the acceptance fee (A$120 subject to change), the deposit fee (A$850), two weeks rent in advance and any personal items you need to purchase.
