FIND YOUR ESCAPE AT THE OPERA.

Page 2: Utah Opera 2012-13 Brochure

Dear Friends of Utah Opera,

I’m so delighted to share our plans for another wonderful season of opera. Within these pages you’ll find opportunities for operas both familiar and new.

We’ll begin our operatic journey with Verdi’s musical powerhouse, Il Trovatore–one of the most ”fiery” pieces in the repertory! This opera centers on a gypsy tale of forbidden love and is filled with memorable Italian music. In January, we will introduce a work that is certain to become a new favorite, Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas. Inspired by a book by Gabriel García Márquez (Love in the Time of Cholera), this Spanish-language opera contains luxurious music that combines with the discovery of the transformative power of love. In March, we return Mozart’s storybook fantasy to the stage – The Magic Flute. We’ll end our season by bringing back that jack-of-all trades The Barber of Seville, a hilarious opera where comedy, twisted plots, and pyrotechnic vocal display unite.

Join us for a season at the opera, where you’ll escape into a world filled with passion, magic, and laughter. I can’t wait to see you there!

Sincerely, Christopher McBeth, Artistic Director

Love is never simple when a gypsy’s curse is involved. Il Trovatore (The Troubadour) is a lively story of romance, obsession, and revenge. The turmoil and rage that unfold after a gypsy’s unthinkable act climax into one of opera’s greatest finales - a final act filled with sword fights, death, revenge, and ultimately regret.
