MAIL BAG (p-3)

(Rec’d, 12/23/2012. Harvey N. Bailey RD3, ’60-’62 [email protected] )

Hi Bill,----I was on-board during the Black Sea trip and was wondering if you remember when a shipmate, who suffered

from chronic sea sickness, jumped overboard on the starboard side when the Russian Destroyer was in front and to our

starboard causing us to turn toward them. I was in radar on the ships headphones when the fantail watch hollered man

overboard. He was so excited I had to ask him to repeat what he said. Usually in radar we keep track of other ships

movements on the DRT, (dead reckoning tracer), but since we could see the Russian ship there was no need to. We had to

hurry and reset the DRT to a scale to track the man overboard plus put some paper on top of the DRT, by this time we

were turning to starboard coming close to the Russian ship. We lowered the motor whale boat and picked up the jumper. In

radar we also monitored Russian ship and land based radars and recorded them. I also remember spending the night

transferring the milk onto our ship so we could make the morning convoy back down the Suez Canal and on to Mombasa,

Kenya, crossing the equator, and the initiation to become a trusty shellback. I think a few were disappointed that we had to

spend Christmas in Kenya instead of Naples, Italy. There were also some carriers that lost planes that we were plane

guarding in the Med. There was another time when we were anchored off of France and some of us took a bus trip to the

French Alps, don’t know if you were there or not. There was on shipmate from radar, Hap Hampson, (’59-’62 RD3), who

decided to remove the pull chains from the men’s restrooms where we stopped, he ended up with seven or eight chains. Our

tour guide asked him to return one chain to one of the hotels because they were related to her, which he did. I talked to him

a few years ago and asked him if he still had the pull chains and he said he did but his wife made him take them down since

she didn’t like them hanging in the house. (Harv)

Jim,----Merry Christmas. In response to William W. Washington’s, ( FTG3 ‘61-’62) and Robert “Cham” Light’s comments

in the December 2012 Newsletter, I served aboard the “H” from 1961 to 1963. My tour pretty much mirrored the sane 24

months that (Commander) Robert C. Light was in command.----I have provided some additional information about the

Med-Cruise 1961-1962. I have attached the Haynsworth Family Gram (see page 4) covering the first 3 months of that

cruise,(August to November 1961). I can’t find the other Family Gram covering the last 3 months which included our

extended tour in the Red Sea, our emergency milk run to Africa, our Shellback initiation while crossing the equator, and

the huge and dangerous storm we encountered while crossing the Atlantic in March ’62, while returning home.---- Hope

this helps to fill in some of the blanks for those who served during this Cruise.----P.S. After the first Med-Cruise, there was

a second six month cruise to the Med, and of course our involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis in Oct-Nov ’62. It seemed

like we were never home in Norfolk during these 24 months.----//s// Charlie Delahanty RM2/c

Dear Mr. Horn,----I am enclosing a check to cover the expense of sending me the newsletter. My husband served on the

Haynsworth, (1944-1945 TM3/c). We enjoyed the many reunions we attended over the years. Also, I am enclosing an

obituary that was in the Buffalo News regarding a former member of the Haynsworth Crew, (1954-1958) William L.

Clayton, (FTSn). We did not know him but some of your members might remember him. (Ed. Note; Thank you Margaret

for letting us know of the passing of our shipmate Bill Clayton.). If you want to send my newsletter via the internet my e-

mail address is [email protected] . ----Best Regards to our old Friends.

Sincerely, //s// Margaret Messecar

(Rec’d 1/5/2013) Marion W. Dinninger, ’44-’45 MM2/c [email protected] )

Enclosed is my check for dues. Thanks for sending the newsletter. I was at the reunion in ’06 and one I will always remember.

Dear Jim,----Enclosed is a check for my 2013 dues. Read our recent, (Dec. 2012) newsletter and thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially enjoy

the “MAIL BAG”. I enjoyed reading the article on the reunion, (page 8), but part of the list of attendee’s apparently was omitted. It said

“continued on page 16). That page was the address label. Could you include this in the next newsletter? I’m curious to see if shipmates

from my era attended. I and my brother, Joe (Csencitz, ’69-’70 CS3/c) were on board when the Haynsworth was decommissioned in

January, 1970. Keep up the great work! (Ed. Note; Sorry Bob about the error on page 8. The actual continuation of the Reunion

information was on page 13. As for the list of attendee’s, that was the complete list as printed on page 8. Only the “Reunion narrative”

continued on page 13. There were no shipmates from the period of 1969 to 1970 in attendance. I researched all the reunions going back to

2003 and there were no shipmates from ’69-’70 that attended in that period. I have not as yet researched the period of 1989 to 2002 to see

if any attended in those years. I do know, from scuttlebutt, that the “Texas Crews” did hold some reunions in the Texas area after the

decommissioning in 1970 but I have no access to those who attended those reunions. If anyone does, let me know.)

Dear James,----Thank you for continuing to send the Haynsworth Newsletter. I enjoy it as much as Mack does. Enclosed are

dues (past) sorry. As a 20 year Navy wife, I continue to pay the household expenses as I’m sure most other military wives do.

We attended the Haynsworth Reunion in Galveston, Texas and found a few of our friends from the area. We have not been

able to attend since then, but would like to if circumstances permit. P.S., Mack was on the ship when it was decommissioned,

then transferred to the USS Ault, (DD-698), for a short period of time.---//s// Sincerely, Jane Kidd

(Rec’d 1/22/2013 Captain Henry S. Domeracki USN, great nephew of Henry B. Michalak, SN 1944/1945 DD-700).

Dear Mr. Horn,----Enclosed is a check for two Caps and one Patch. My Great Uncle, Henry B. Michalak was onboard your

ship during WWII. It looks to me like he was a plank holder. He is a large reason to why I joined the Navy. I recently

retired after 37 years as a Captain. I was an Intelligence Officer (now Information Dominance Corps). My uncle was born

in New York on February 2, 1926 and died in Sanford, Florida on April 11, 1992. I will be sending you some pictures that I

have of him. One is while he was onboard the ship. I am looking forward to the hats. One is for me and one is for my son.

Thanks so much, //s// Henry S. Domeracki P.S. World War II veterans are my heroes. I have a son deployed on multiple

combat actions in Iraq, Panama, and the Philippines, but it was you and people like you who saved the world for

democracy. Thanks to all of you for your service. (Ed. Note; THANK YOU and your son for your service also and keeping

the democracy alive.) (Ed. Note: I rec’d the photos on March 18 and they are posted on another page). Thanks Henry.

Hi Jim,----Enjoy reading the newsletter for the Haynsworth. Sorry to say that there’s only a few of us left from 1950 to 1954

that are left, but still like to hear stories of things that took place after 1954. Just wrote to let you know that I have moved

back to Maine and give you my new address. Thank you, //s// Larry BT3 (Ed. Note; Larry, I just thought you might be

interested to know the number of shipmates that served aboard the Haynsworth during the period of 1950 to 1954

currently stands at 114. This is from my list of active and current addresses on my hard copy newsletter mailing list.)

(rec’d 1/7/2013. Mrs. Orena Ford (Mital)(Edward Mital, CM2/c ’44-’45 D: 1/25/1973) [email protected] Cleveland, TN).

Dear Mr. Horn,----Having seen your article on Cory Nokleby,(December, 2012 issue page6), I have written him a letter

but, of course I don’t know his address. Would you be so kind as to send the letter to him? (Ed. Note; yes Orena, I did

forward your letter to Cory). I haven’t sealed it- so you would be welcomed to read it. Please find enclosed a check. (to

support the newsletter), ---Sincerely, //s// Orena Ford (following is excerpts from Orena’s letter to Cory Nokleby).

***********************************************

Dear Mr. Nokleby,----After reading your note in the Haynsworth Newsletter, (Dec. 2012 issue), I want to ask you if Mr.

Karos was on the Haynsworth at the same time my husband was? (Ed. Note; Don Karos, RdM3/c served aboard ’44-’45

and passed away on 8/26/2000 the last known address for him was Apple Valley, MN). Eddie, (Mital), kept a log a little bit

on the Haynsworth and I wondered if you might like to have a copy of it. Linda, (Eddies Daughter), has gone a lot around

Charlotte, NC telling about her daddy’s experiences and some of the paraphernalia that I had. It isn’t much. One day I told

him God had sent him to me. He had been a POW and I asked him about the number on his dog tag ---2508. I said, Joe,

“what is the number on our house?” He said 2508. He took especially good care of me through a heart attack, stroke etc.

We traveled a lot with- I should say ‘in’ our camper. The Lord took him home with him in 12/2009. My daughter Linda has

just called me from Charlotte. She has some pictured pictures from a CD that someone else may be interested in the

Haynsworth. She will be happy to send you the log and the CD. Please write or send me a note on my e-mail. She will be

happy to correspond with you. Sincelely, //s// Orena (Mital) Ford

USS Haynsworth Newsletter

MAIL BAG (p-5)

(Originally Published in the May, 2007 Issue of the USS Haynsworth Newsletter)

U.S.S. HAYNSWORTH (DD-700)

Family Gram (1) From nearly halfway around the world comes a distant but never the less warm greeting. HAYNSWORTH has covered

many miles and visited many shores since departing Norfolk three months ago, but the thoughts of the entire crew are

seldom far from you at home. In hopes that all of you in turn think about and are interested in HAYNSWORTH’s

wanderings, this narrative will attempt to bring you up to date on our current deployment.----The many new faces aboard

upon departure from Norfolk have begun to look more familiar, and they are feeling pretty much at home by now

themselves. HAYNSWORTH’s new skipper, Cdr. Robert C. LIGHT, a veteran of this area, has taken hold rapidly, and the

ship is steering a “straight course in a smooth sea.”----On 3 August the ship departed Norfolk as part of the task force

en route to relieve the ships then operating with the Mediterranean SIXTH Fleet. After many landless days of steady

steaming the armada passed through the Straits of Gibraltar into the blue Mediterranean. The “turnover” took place in a

protected anchorage in the central Mediterranean; HAYNSWORTH’s arrival was delayed by a search for a downed

aviator, and we caught only a glimpse of the ship we were to relieve as she steamed for the State’s at best speed. Several

more days of operations with the other new arrivals to the SIXTH Fleet followed “turnover,” and then-- at long last—

HAYNSWORTH visited a liberty port. The old-timers quickly became reacquainted with Cannes and the French Riviera,

while new-comers eagerly tasted French wines, ogled bikinis, and collected sun tans. The six days in Cannes-Theoule were

followed by a tender availability period in Naples, Italy; the ship was at sea only one day between 24 August and 11

September! Many of us found some attractive resorts in the Naples area—Capri is only a short boat ride away---

while the ship readied itself for the long cruises ahead.---Operation Checkmate saw HAYNSWORTH join with elements of

the Greek, Italian and Turkish Navies in improving the capability of the NATO countries to fight together if the need ever

arises. The ship acted mainly as an escort and fire support ship for an amphibious force in the Dardanelles area. The

landing forces were worried about the Greek “defenders;” HAYNSWORTH men were more concerned with the “missile

launching pads” on the hills around us until it was discovered that the tall thin objects were Moslem Minarets. This was the

ships first sight of the Moslem Middle East; succeeding weeks have shown and taught us much more about this area and its

way of life. From 18 to 26 September HAYNSWORTH visited an area seldom seen by an American, the Black Sea. In

consonance with the Navy’s aim of insuring freedom of the seas and in recognition of the close ties which now bind Turkey

and the United States, the ship joined the USS N.K. PERRY (DDR-883) in a transit to the beautiful and historic

Dardanelles and Bosporus Straights and in visits to the Turkish Black Sea Coast. The two ships spent a day together in

Eregli, and then HAYNSWORTH traveled to within 80 miles of the Soviet boarder to visit the important port of Trabzon,

becoming the third American warship to do so. The Turks were interesting and friendly, and the unique atmosphere of the

city in turn drew attention from the visiting crew members. The outstanding attraction of the day, however, was the

hospitality and recreational facilities of the local USAF installation, a breath of home which made quite a hit with the still

outbound crew. The tour of Turkey wound up with a visit to Istanbul on the way out of the Black Sea. A large portion of

the SIXTH fleet anchored in the roadstead with us to honor Turkey’s Navy Day. Camera enthusiasts had a field day in this

historic and enchanting cross roads between Europe and Asia, and our stay flew by quickly. On the whole,

HAYNSWORTH’s unique Good Will mission to Turkey was as memorable as it was worthwhile. A party for Berbera,

(Somaliland), school children and a luncheon for the Wardrooms rounded out the visit. Some of those who had escaped the

perils of “Karachi tummy” suffered the ravages of “Berbera belly”, but the town’s pleasure with the visit made the two day

stopover a worth while one. A day’s travel northward from Berbera lay the British Crown colony of Aden.

HAYNSWORTH’s last stop before Suez, and after two day’s of eager shopping in this free port, the ship was well stocked

with presents for a future Christmas.—The prospect of spending the Holiday’s in Italy and France seemed the next best

thing to being at home, and spirits were high as HAYNSWORTH prepared for transit of the Suez Canal. Fate, in the form

of an un-scheduled change in orders for our relieving destroyer decided that we were to get to know this part of the world

even better; after a midnight transfer of 47 tons of dried milk for food ravaged Africans in Kenya -(continued on page 6)

MAIL BAG (page 6)

(continued from page 5),

--we were southbound on on a fast trip to Mombasa, East Africa’s largest port. Initial disappointment at missing Med

liberty ports was quickly replaced by interest in this unusual mercy mission. An added attraction of the trip was the

“Crossing of the Line” en-route to Mombasa. The traditional Equator transit ceremony was carried out in the best style, to

the dismay of many an unsuspecting “Pollywogs”, and about 210 HAYNSWORTH men became trusty “Shellbacks” as a

result. Mombasa turned out to be a beautiful city of modern appearance in a lush, almost tropical setting, and the

attractions of the beautiful beaches and unique sightseeing combined with the hospitality of the many British sailors in

town made the days pass by quickly. The trip north was interrupted by a New Years celebration in Aden, and then we

found ourselves back in port Suez. Practically on a first name basis with the Suez pilots by now, the ship made her fourth

trip of the cruise through the canal and headed for Athens-Piraeus, Greece arriving on January 8th

. The crew, realizing that

HAYNSWORTH was the only USN ship present, did it’s best to represent the whole SIXTH Fleet in the “People to People”

program, and many dollars and good moments were spent ashore. The return to Western civilization, both the ancient one

seen on several good tours and the modern one visited at liberty call, was thoroughly enjoyed by all hands. En-route for

Messina, Sicily, the crew made final preparations for the annual Administrative Inspection. These last minute efforts joined

with long-range preparation proved worthwhile, for COMDESDIV 222 awarded the ship with a grade of Excellent, thereby

helping HAYNSWORTH continue to raise her year’s performance marks. The short stopover in Messina was followed by a

two week tender availability in Naples, where the usual organized confusion during tender availability working hours was

brightened by tours to Rome, days of leave, and the endearing charms of Naples. With COMDESDIV 222 embarked,

HAYNSWORTH served as flagship during the exercise period following Naples. Then, as the ship pointed westward

towards its last and most eagerly awaited liberty port- Barcelona, Spain- plans were changed for us once again. Palma has

been a wonderful second choice in everyone’s opinion, and the entire Spanish Island of Mallorca proves to be almost as

hospitable now during the summer tourist season. Some of the best scenery in Europe, indoors as well as out, has prompted

many hours of liberty and tours, and the low prices appeal to everyone aboard. The plans for the return voyage have

clarified in the last few days, and the ship now looks forward to holding turnover and leaving the Med in a few days and

arriving in Norfolk on either the second or third of March. To get up-to-date information on arrival time you may call Mrs.

Donna Light at 497-3950, Mrs. Margot Aicklen at UL5-5393 or the ships Movement Office at MA 28211- Ext. 2975. A

review of the events and achievements of our Sixth Fleet Deployment gives us all much to be grateful for, since the record

established by your loved one is a fine one. We can only hope the HAYNSWORTH, wherever she has gone , has contributed

in some way to the cause for which we are all striving. In the meantime our thoughts turn almost continually to home and

we look forward to the day we shall see you all again.

//s// R.C. Light, Commander, U.S. Navy

Commanding Officer

FAMILY GRAM # 2 CDR. R.C. Light was the Commander of the USS Haynsworth during its seven month SIXTH FLEET deploument (August 1961 –

March 1962). During that deployment he sent out at least two “Family Grams”. Copies were sent to the Editor by CDR Light’s

son, Robert “Cham” Light, Jr. and by Charlie Delahanty, (60-63 RM2/c). The text of the first of those Family Grams was

included in the May 2007 issue of the newsletter. The second is set forth below.

There have been moments during the current deployment when each of us aboard has wondered if the seven month

cruise would ever come to completion. The occasion and frequency of these thoughts varies from man to man, of course, but

undeniably there was at least one who began counting hours before Cape Henry Light sank below the horizon last summer.

Now the ornamented “Days to Go” status board on the bridge tells us that we are very short “short-times” with the SIXTH

FLEET, and mingled with each man’s anticipation of the return to Norfolk are pleasant memories of a unique and

successful cruise. At present HAYNSWORTH finds herself in the fortunate position of being able to add to recollections of

past fun and achievements and thoughts of future stateside leave and one of the best liberty ports in the Med, Palms de

Mallorca seems a fine climax and reward for a successful cruise, and it is a good point from which to survey the past and

bring you up to date on our activities. --- The figure 39,000 miles we steamed in seven months is pretty academic in itself,

but strung out long this winding route were ports in thirteen different countries and several bodies of water only

occasionally frequented by U.S. Naval vessels. In fact, in the ports of eight of these countries, HAYNSWORTH was the only

U.S. Naval vessel present. Much of the effectiveness of this cruise is due to the interest and effort demonstrated by the crew

in promoting mutual good will through athletics, shipboard visits, orphan’s parties, and liberty in all its aspects with our

“hosts” all along the way.---Yet, no SIXTH FLEET Deployment is complete without extensive “Fleet Ops” of one sort or

another, Besides the readiness—maintaining operations with which any truly international

exercises: Checkmate off Turkish shores and Midlink IV at Karachi, Pakistan. Many members of the outbound crew could

only have been classified as land lubbers, but the ship’s record in these and other exercises, shows (continued on; (P-7) )

(Continued from page 6) that a lot of salt has been picked up along the way. Relaxed steaming and on-the-job training has

given each man a good chance to improve himself, and the record made on advancement-in-rate exams---80%

advancement—and---22 successful high school equivalency courses completions—shows that spare time has been put to

good use.--- Another Family Gram was written back in the hazy past of October, HAYNSWORTH has steamed many miles

and her crew has laid away at least as many memories since that time. Although it will be impossible to adequately paint a

picture and convey the atmosphere of this far flung journey, some of the harbors in our wake have to be seen to be

believed---a recount of the highlights since Bahrain might be interesting.-----As October,(1961), progressed,

HAYNSWORTH seemed to be becoming a permanent shipping lane fixture in the Persian Gulf, but early in November we

headed east at last, and two days of quite steaming found us in Karachi, former capital and main city of Pakistan. Most

geography books claim this to be on the fringes of the Orient---not bad for a Norfolk Destroyer! Several of the crew were

already acquainted with this surprising blend of East and West; the rest soon become familiar with the sight of cabs

jockeying for road space with Camel carts, the smell of upwind Bundara boats and downwind Pakistani perfume, and the

sound of the “Karachi equivalent of “Hey Joe…” HAYNSWORTH joined COMDESRON 22 in USS HENLY (DD-762) as

a guest of the Pakistani Navy and a participant in MIDLINK IV, a CENTO Alliance (Pakistan and Great Britain) exercise.

The Pakistanis proved to be as competent in close formation tactical maneuvering as they were energetic in hosting the

visitors, and the maneuvers were as unique as the liberty ashore.--26 November (1961) found HAYNSWORTH

Resuming her accustomed occupation of single ship steaming; with Capt. G.S. HESTON, COMDESRON 22, embarked, the

U.S. Navy paid its first visit to Berber since former British Somaliland became a Republic in 1960. Liberty in this town near

“the Horn” in East Africa consisted of beach parties into the early evening and one spirited soccer game with the local

team.

Since Istanbul, HAYNSWORTH has been journeying in a “different world,” a storybook land of camels, caravans, and

countless deserts---and also of strategic trade routes, petroleum, and quarreling rulers. It is an area considered delicate and

crucial in world power balance, and the ships potential for promoting understanding and friendship is continually brought

home to us. As one of the small number of ships constantly on patrol with the Middle-East Force, HAYNSWORTH patrols

areas near and visits ports in Africa, Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the Indian

sub-continent The explosive political situation in the region caused us to pass up a liberty visit to Beirut, Lebanon, (and

later it’s replacement, Rhodes, Greece). In fact we did not get ashore to stretch our legs until after passing through the Suez

Canal and the Red Sea, where we stopped at Djibouti, French Somaliland on the East African coast, on 14 and 15 October

for fuel. The native curio vendors and the fishermen in the crew had a good two days of it, while the ship hosted

an orphan’s party and buffet for local officials.----The cool breeze of the Arabian Sea was welcomed once we put to sea

again; however, a fast trip to the warm and shallow Persian Gulf found us lying off Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia on the

morning of the 20th

of October. Now, as any Navy man can verify, there are always those “Who fail to get the word;” it

turned out that the local Arabian Officials were no exception, and the ship was refused permission to enter the port because

of a communications slip-up between national and local officials. We sadly pocketed a visit schedule carefully planned by

local American Oil Company officials and turned towards Bahrain Island. This British protected oil wealthy kingdom will

be our base until 7 November, alternating patrols in the Persian Gulf with liberty in the British Navy Base and Manama,

capital city of the island.----It is hard to create the proper atmosphere in vicarious “arm-chair” travel, but it is hoped that

you will have a better conception of events aboard and around HAYNSWORTH over the past three months after reading

this letter. If the accounts of our travels stimulate you to brush up on your geography and current events, so much the

better. At any rate, remember that our thoughts are with you just as our mission here is ultimately for and because of you.

Keep the letters coming, and best wishes from all aboard.

Editors note: I had intended to scan the original and paste on the page but the original was to light and some areas were

DID YOU KNOW?

Q. Why do ships and aircraft use ‘mayday’ as their call for help?

A. ‘Mayday’ comes from the French word m’aidez meaning ‘help me’- and is pronounced approximately as ‘mayday’!

Q. Why are ‘zero’ scores in tennis called ‘love’?

A. In France, where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called ‘I’oeuf’, which is

French for ‘egg’, When tennis was introduced in the US, Americans (mis)pronounced it ‘love’. (I always wondered about that)

Now you Know! (things we always wondered about)

(Look for more important?? Trivia where space allows!

Dear Jim,----Thank you once again fot the voluminous newsletter.---A truly massive undertaking! Since I’m not online at

home (too Scottish to pay Comcast $500/year for the connection), I would appreciate continuing to get the paper newsletter.

Fear not! They are not recycled but carefully filed in my Haynsworth archive. I infer from dividing the number of dues

payors into the dues income on you financial report that $26 is about the right amount of dues? Please find enclosed a check

for dues which includes another shot at the ‘Foul Weather Jacket’ raffle. I wish you health and prosperity in the new year!

(Well, thank you Malcolm, back at you! Jim).----My Best, Malcolm Kenyon, 1969 – 1970.

(Rec’d August 17, 2012 Ray Kullnat MM2 ’50-’54 [email protected] Mullins, SC)

Dear Jim,----I would suggest the Rapid City South Dakota area. My reasoning is as follows. The ‘Badlands’ are really

something, rolling hills as far as you can see but mainly, Mt. Rushmore, the four faces (carved) on the side of the mountain

and I believe that the (mountain carving) statue of ‘Crazy Horse’ is now completed. (Ed. Note: I have visited this on-going

project and it is still a massive work in progress. Since it has no funding from federal or state entities, it is progressing

solely on private donations. It is kept up by the family of the man who started the project decades ago) That is an amazing

piece of art work on the mountain. There are also fabulous museums that go back hundreds of years. There is an area of

the mountains called the ‘Needles’ where tunnels were carved through for vehicles to pass through. (Ed. I’ve seen them and

driven through them). Rapid City is quite a large city. In the west the buildings are not on top of each other like a lot of

other cities. Also, they have the Air Force Base there. Being that we are ‘swabbies’ that may not be of interest to many,

BUT THEY ARE MILITARY ALSO. Retta and I have not been there since 1983 and there is a lot more to see now than

there was then. Also, STURGIS, SD has the ‘Motorcycle Museum which is a famous gathering place for bikers. I wouls

recommend you call 1-800-732-5682, the SD Dept. of Tourism. They will send you info. (Ed. Note: I have been in contact

with a representative of the Rapid City Convention and visitors Bureau and have been invited to come out there for a tour

of what they can offer our organization if we hold a reunion there.)----Jim, you really do a great job on all that you do.

Many thanks. I believe my dues are paid, if not let me know. (Yes Ray, they are. Thanks.)

(received 3/18/2013 from Henry S. Domeracki, Captain, USN (retired) Austin, TX.)

Dear Mr. Horn,----Enclosed are a couple pictures of my great uncle, SN Henry B. Michalak. He served onboard the

USS Haynsworth when it was first commissioned. Here is some information about him:

Born: February 3, 1926 in Depew, New York

Died: August 11, 1992 in Sanford, Florida

He was a plankholder on the ship. The family story behind the picture of him climbing up on the ship was that he

went in the water to save a downed pilot. (Ed. Note: look closely. He is holding on to the pilots leg). Please post these on

your website. As I mentioned above, you World War II veterans are my heros. You changed the world and made it a

better place. For that we should all be grateful.

Sincerely,
