Remembering 125 Years of HistoryOn Nov. 28, 1894, Newport News Shipbuilding won the contract to build the steamer Newport News (pictured).

On Dec. 1, 1917, the so-called “million dollar agreement” was made with Henry E. and Archer Huntington for the purchase of adjacent land for the shipyard.

USS Enterprise Celebrates its 50th BirthdayThe USS Enterprise (CVN 65) celebrated its 50th birthday on Friday, Nov. 25. To commemorate the special event, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) created a special website to honor the ship. The site features NNS shipbuilder quotes as well as information about the ship’s history, construction, commissioning and deployments. To view the site, go to http://www.huntingtoningalls.com/enterprise. FREE posters celebrating the USS Enterprise’s 50th birthday are also available outside the Communications Office in Bldg. 520-1 (pictured). Shipbuilders are also encouraged to view the NNS ad that ran in the Nov. 25 edition of the Daily Press.

“The USS Enterprise is a grand ship that every shipbuilder can take pride in knowing that their skills and hands turned out an excellent ship designed to be the best from the first moment the keel was laid to the final day when she will be decommissioned,” said Alan V. Varney (X31). “That alone shows that we build nothing but quality ships, and the USS Enterprise represents just that.”

USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) sailed into history on November 25, 1961, joining the U.S. Navy’s fleet as the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. For 50 years she has ruled the seas, projecting American power and diplomacy around the world. We honor USS ENTERPRISE, her sailors and her shipbuilders. After a half century, she continues to make history. Newport News Shipbuilding is proud to have built and maintained this legendary carrier.

Shipbuilders “Making a Difference”The Fall 2011 Business Letter Writing (Hourly Leadership Development Program) class donated food and gifts to the City of Newport News Department of Human Services to benefit two local families during the holiday season. On Nov. 18, several students distributed the five boxes of food and monetary donations to the families.

“This project was extremely successful,” said Nancy Hill (E49), class instructor. “The students applied their academic training in this program to real human needs. We hope to make this an annual event with the help of future Leadership Development participants.”

OFI Program Announces October Promotional WinnersThe Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) program has announced the winners of its Holiday Cash OFI promotion. Joshua Fuelling (O53) and Larry Darden Jr. (M30) each won $1000. The winners were randomly selected from the 483 valid OFIs submitted during October. Leadership Development Recognizes New EPL GraduatesNewly promoted supervisors and managers are required to attend an Enhancing Personal Leadership (EPL) five-day course once in their new position. Walk Away for a Day SuccessHealthWaves celebrated “Walk Away for a Day” on Nov. 17 by encouraging shipbuilders to give up tobacco products in exchange for gum. During the event, the team collected 30 packs of cigarettes and a variety of other tobacco products. In addition, HealthWaves representatives handed out more than 700 “Quit Now Virginia” cards for a free phone call with a quit coach.

“This event was very successful,” said Terry Holbert, HealthWaves Waterfront manager. “Current literature highlights the toxicity of second hand smoke as a health risk to everyone. HealthWaves thought this event provided encouragement and positive options to being smoke-free.”

“The OFI program is a great way for new employees to submit ideas for improvement. The shipyard has made it possible for my wife and I to give my two girls a great Christmas this year.”

22 Accidents Reported Nov. 18 - Nov. 23 Newport News shipbuilders reported 22 accidents from Friday, Nov. 18 through Wednesday, Nov. 23 with Nov. 21 being accident-free. Great job shipbuilders! Of the 22 accidents reported, 10 were delayed reports, meaning the accidents were not reported on the day they occurred. Shipbuilders are encouraged to report accidents as promptly as possible. Summer Internships AvailableNewport News Shipbuilding Talent Acquisition is now accepting applications for the summer internship pipeline program. The intern program provides meaningful summer employment to college students with a minimum 3.0 GPA enrolled in degree programs that match the company’s needs. Participants will work full-time, 40-hours per week, for 10 weeks during the summer months. Internships are available for both NNS and Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Corporate. Annual Holiday Food DriveThe 2011 Shipbuilders... Caring and Sharing Holiday Food Drive to benefit the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is underway and will run through Dec. 9. The Foodbank accepts all non-perishable items (no glass). Labeled collection boxes are placed inside designated buildings on the first floor, warehouses and at piers, docks and trailers.
